I recently bought a new little Sony Cyber~Shot digital camera with 12.1 mega pixels. ;)
It takes a pretty good shot but I want to buy myself a digital single-lens reflex camera in the very near future. :goteam:
I thought this would be a good place to talk about cameras and learn about how to use them! :ha:
Seriously though, sometimes I notice a lot of members' shots are kind of blurry or unfocused, and mine can be sometimes too, but I got this feature on my new camera called 'intelligent auto' that prevents blurred pictures. :)
Back to DSLR cameras...
I am hearing from Mitchel and others on the site, that the lens is absolutely everything, and that Nikon or Canon is the way to go. I wonder if there is a good one out there for beginners like me...
Is anyone else looking to buy a new camera...or improve how they use their existing one ???
My previous digital camera died on me...in mid-picture!!!
It was truly devastating. :(
I couldn't wait to get to the store to buy me a new one. Now I'm looking for an excuse to buy the real nice one I've always wanted. :ha:
Gotta do some more researching, but hoping other experienced members might continue to share some of their knowledge in this thread. Feel free to ramble on about what you know and give some tips too. :waving:
On that note, I'm going to snap a few shots...

I had a EOS 20D Cannon SLR, IMO the best part about it was how fast you could take consecutive photos. Closeups were great, but I could never make reds and blues turn out like they should.
When it broke, I got a Sony TX1, a super-thin point and shoot. I just love it! It's probably similar to your Cyber-Shot, has great color, closeups, and even takes photos in very dark conditions, without a flash.
My husband has taken over the SLR, I don't miss lugging that heavy thing around at all! I can fit my camera in a pocket, hang it around my neck, the only drawback is that it is so small it's easy to misplace.

Thanks 1aday!
Yes, my cyber shot takes shots in the dark without the flash. Here's an example of a pic I took tonight...

Yeah, I find my Sony is small too and I worry about dropping it. I got this crazy extra warranty on it though for 2 years and it even covers drops and falls!
Thanks for sharing about your cameras and your experience. I'm so excited about getting a DSLR camera soon...

I just purchased a Nikon D3100 and have heard nothing but good things about it. Only got it two days ago and have yet to take any pics. I went ahead and purchased the 55-200 mm lens with it along with the bag, because I was able to get both as a "bonus" buy for an extra $150. I knew I would be upgrading to a 200 mm lens, so I went ahead and bit the dust. If you get a chance, check it out...
D3100 from Nikon (http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Digital-SLR-Cameras/25472/D3100.html)
For a bit less, it is my understanding that the Canon EOS Rebel XS is also a great camera.

I just want my new little Sony for everyday use, but I want a DSLR camera for special shots and images. :08:
Wonder where I should shop first...
Do you think Best Buy would be a good place to get a camera? They even have payment plans, although I'm planning to just buy mine outright.
Wonder if they'll let me see the shots it takes before I buy it? I suppose I can return it if it's not what I want.

I bought a Nikon D90 camera body an aftermarket 70-300mm lense. THe camera takes great pictures but you will get some blur if you arent' carefull. The high end SLR cameras have many different focus "points" within the view window and when it is zoomed it will blur the background and put in focus the point that is closest unless a different focal point is selected. I would recommend if buying a nikon to get the nikon with Image stabilization as this will help with the night pictures in low light. Otherwise I love my Nikon. My wife has a bit of trouble with blurry pictures sometimes but again you have to understand the points of focus and how to move it about. You can also buy dvd's that show you how to use all the camera features. That was absolutely worth it for me and it was only about $30 on ebay..

I usually buy photo equipment from Amazon and BH Photo. Best Buy usually sells at full retail price.
You may want to look at the Sony NEX cameras if you're looking for something inbetween a DSLR and a P&S.

Am I to understand that you can buy cameras that allow you to change lenses ???
I'm really interested in taking pictures of birds in trees, most especially.

P&S stands for Point and Shoot (the type of camera you're currently using). All SLRs allow you to change lenses.
A superzoom P&S camera is probably best for you if you want to take pictures of birds. Telephoto lenses are extremely expensive for DSLRs.

P&S is a point and shoot camera.
If you are looking into a DSLR, you have several brands to choose from. All of the major brands make good products at this point. Canon and Nikon are the two big name brands that most people are familiar with, therefore they are the two largest selling brands. Both of their lens systems are very good. Image stabilization is available if you buy a stabilized lens(costs more). Canon can use most of their auto focus lenses that they have ever made. Same with Nikon, some of the Nikon cameras can use older manual focus only lenses as well.
Sony has a DSLR line that they purchased from Minolta and image stabilization is based in the camera not the lenses. Therefore all lenses are in effect stabilized, all Minolta branded lenses work with Sony DSLRs.
Olympus also has a camera based stabilization system. When they developed their DSLR they changed the lens mount so only Olympus digital lenses will work.
Pentax has camera based stabilization, and any lens Pentax has ever made, manual or auto focus will work on their DSLRs.
I mention lens compatibility so you have an idea what you can find as far as used lenses.
I personally shoot a Pentax DSLR for several reasons...
1: The cameras, lenses etc tend to cost less than other brands because they do not advertise nearly as much.
2: The cameras have for more metal in their construction providing for a non plastic feel in the camera.
3: Stabilization in the body of the camera.
4: You can use any lens that Pentax has ever made. There are a ton of old prime lenses for very cheap that you can use.
I worked in a camera store for almost 5 years so feel free to ask me question if you have them. As far as camera specs and reviews, dpreview.com is one of the best resources. One thing I always asked my customers is does the camera feel comfortable in your hand? If it doesn't, you're not as likely to use it. Keep that in mind as you are shopping, find a store if you can to feel the cameras. As far as where to purchase your camera, if an online sale sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Bhphoto.com is a great place to buy from.

Can't go wrong with Amazon!!!
I ended up buying mine from a local camera shop simply for personal advice/service, etc. I was able to get it for the same price as what was being offered on Amazon, but still had to pay taxes...
Amazon.com: Nikon D3100 14.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens: Camera & Photo (http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-D3100-Digital-18-55mm-3-5-5-6/dp/B003ZYF3LO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1291001675&sr=8-1)
With a budget like yours, you should be able to get the camera, lens that comes with it (18-55mm) as well as an additional lens!!! and have some change left...

The D3100 have image stabilization in lens as well as 11 point focal points... If you look at the link I provided, you will see the D3100 has pretty much covered all its bases. Only negative I have heard of it was the poor audio quality with the video, which is no biggie as I have a camcorder for videos...

Wow, I am loving what I'm reading! You guys have been most helpful and I'll let you know what I decide on and when I get it. Not in a rush but want to get one by the new year.
I am dreaming of the great pics I will take. Image stabilization will definitely be of interest to me. I want it to be as easy as can be but I am pretty good with cameras and electronic equipment so I think I'll be able to learn to use it well...let's hope.

I picked up a Nikon 75-300mm 4.5-5.6 AF on Craigs list for $150 that I use for birds and dog agility trials. I'd love a 400 or 600mm but then your talking big money, well to me anyway. My 75-300 is not a very fast lens but on my D90 I can use a pretty high ISO and shoot at 1/2000 in poor light without getting too noisy. Needles to say I'm very happy with it for the money spent!
Here are some shots using that lens.

Mitchel, your shots are just spectacular...even though you're very modest about your skill and ability. ;)
Those pics you gave links to are just absolutely gorgeous and they look totally professional to me. Please keep them coming...
Here was another one of your posts from another thread that I wanted in this thread too, so I could refer to the information repeatedly...
Yes it's all about glass and that's where you will spend most of your money, or should anyway.
When they talk about fast glass they are simply referring to the max aperture size. Smaller number = bigger opening = more light hitting the film (sensor) equals the ability to use faster shutter speeds and lower ISO to avoid grain (digital noise). It also allows for better control over the DOF (Depth Of Field) Wide open apertures like 2.8 or bigger like 1.4 will produce a very shallow area of focus or DOF. I use this with most of my dog portraits or flower pictures to blur the background making to the subject the center of attention.
In general the bigger the aperture the more money you spend, especially with wide angle or long lenses. So a lot of camera shopping comes down to your budget and what you are looking to use the gear for. You will find better deals on used Nikon/Nikkor glass than Canon. Canon bodies are also a little more pricey. Most people in the know these days say you can't tell the difference in image quality between the two brands using comparable equipment so buy what fits your budget.
Hope that helps to explain fast glass.
Randy...
Your new camera sure takes a wicked shot! WoW! :08: That Agave is stunning! :D
You are not derailing my thread at all...what good is a camera chat thread with no pictures?!

Those nature shots are excellent too. You guys all have great cameras, that's for sure! :goteam:
Do you guys think I shouldn't put out big bucks on a first camera ??? Do you think I should just get something more modest to start with ??? This is what my mom thinks and I wondered what you guys thought. I don't want to get something too complicated that I won't want to use...
Think maybe I just need to go shopping soon and see what's out there...

Definitely gotta do more research. I also like what someone else said in this thread earlier about making sure the camera feels good in my hands, so I'll want to use it. I want something fairly small if I can get it.

I could possibly have a new camera under the tree for Christmas, but here in Canada the real good deals and sales start after the holidays are over...

My DX lenses would mute the full frame advantages of a D3. Unless your doing super wide angle stuff the D7000 is an all around a better camera according to Ken, and all that for $1200. Last time I looked very used D3's were still in the $2500 range, and with the D7000's 16 MP sensor you can crop and still have D3 image quality. I'd love the D3's 9 fps but 6 is way better than my current 4.5 that I still get good action shots with. I'm pretty sure I'm sold on this camera unless it's found to have major issues that Nikon can't fix which I doubt will happen.

Hey John, just curious as to why you're using a 105mm macro for birds? How close were you and are those shots cropped? Were you using tubes?
I would think a longer lens would make life easier for bird photography, unless you're setting up a whole deal with strobes and a remote for the camera like some people do for hummingbirds.

The D7000 comes pretty close to the D3 sensor wise but it lacks build quality, viewfinder coverage, AF-Speed, built-in vertical grip, and second LCD/dials of the D3.
DxOMark - Compare sensors (http://dxomark.com/index.php/en/Camera-Sensor/Compare-sensors/(appareil1)/680|0/(appareil2)/438|0/(appareil3)/628|0/(onglet)/0/(brand)/Nikon/(brand2)/Nikon/(brand3)/Nikon)
Price for performance, the D7000 is definitely the best camera.

I took the photos while I was on a trip to Ecuador. I didn't know what to expect (wet landings, downpours all day etc.) so I only took a 35mm F2 and 105mm with me. I was debating whether or not to bring a bigger lens right before I left for the airport. I was lucky the D2Hs and 105mm are weather proof since they got drenched.
As for approaching the birds, they seem to be much more approachable there than here. All of the shots are full size (not cropped @ 105mm - DX) and hand held. I used a flash on the last shot to illuminate the bird since it was completely dark.

John look at how the D7000 outperforms the D3 and Canon 5D MKII in ISO tests. Seriously, you have to see this, It's not even close.
Nikon D7000, D300, D3 (D700) and Canon 5D Mark II High ISO Comparison (http://kenrockwell.com/tech/comparisons/2010-11-08-d7000-d300-5dmarkii-d3-iso/index.htm)
As for auto focus speed,
Whatever Nikon has done under the hood has made it the best, fastest, most precise and most accurate focus system of any Nikon.
This becomes more apparent as you've shot more cameras for longer; it's a subtle thing, but something I very much notice.
It feels about the same or better than my professional Nikon D3, and worlds faster in actual use than my Nikon D300.
The D7000 has the highest linear resolution of any Nikon DSLR, and more overall resolution than any other Nikon under $7,500. The Nikon D7000 has technical performance better than every other Nikon DSLR priced under $7,500, and handles better than any Nikon DSLR, regardless of price.
pick up and shoot a D7000, and it just feels better and runs faster than every other Nikon.

As for auto focus speed,
The D3 is around twice as sensitive as the D7000 (look at the DxO link I posted above). The D7000 has stronger noise reduction used for its jpegs which destroys details. You could apply the same type of noise reduction on D3 raw files and come out with a much cleaner image.
As for Ken:
Let me google that for you (http://tinyurl.com/26ktrr4)

Even according to DxO the SNR difference is negligible in real world photos. Then add the additional 4 MP to help with cropping. You might not want to believe it's a D3 killer, but for my money it is, and without pixel peeping I seriously doubt anyone could say otherwise, especially after post processing. So much nowadays comes down to the individual's skill set with PP tools,.....and then there is that little thing called art. ;)
As for Ken, he's an outspoken and popular Nikon DSLR shooter/reviewer with a very successful website that has used all the gear. These people all have their critics and I also read DP and the other sites. Keep in mind that he only uses Nikon DSLR's for personal use. To me that's a pretty big advantage in reporting the ins and out of camera gear.
Well at the end of the day this is the camera that best fits my budget, and in many ways it compares to or betters the very expensive D3 so I'm pretty excited about it!
Oh and for the record, if I could afford it I'd wait for the next Nikon FX, but sadly that's not the case.

Wow Mitchel, I really enjoyed that article by Ken! :D
So it really is very much a personal choice when you buy a camera, and not the same for everyone.
That was very helpful to read. I guess I need to get out camera shopping soon but I've just been so busy with other things right now.
Plus too, here the prices are jacked up real high on everything over the holidays and before Christmas when they know people need it, but things go on sale after xmas like you wouldn't believe! There are even people who shop and do their gift-giving after Christmas...so they can save a lot of money.
Bob told me that the US doesn't have "Boxing Day" like we do in Canada, so you're all probably wondering what the hell I'm talking about! :ha:
The day after Christmas and the week that follows will bring lots of low prices and good deals, so if I make a camera purchase, it will be around this time for sure.
So many things to consider, but thanks so much for sharing all this great information and educating me about cameras. :waving:
Looking forward to further discussions and information sharing...

If you are buying a digital camera be sure to get one compatible with an Eye-Fi card.
How does the Eye-Fi card work? | Eye-Fi (http://www.eye.fi/how-it-works/basics)
You shoot pictures and they go directly onto your computer. No wire. rarely can you ever fill up the card with pics.

Thank you for the tips - When I first went digital, I had a couple P&S Olympus digicams, but got a Canon G9 a few years ago to get the higher bitrate. I like having a smaller camera that is always available in my purse.
With the old 35mm SLRs it was more of an conscious effort to haul a camera around - and I missed a lot of opportunities to take pictures. I have an ME-super and a bunch of lenses for that at home - telephotos and zoom lenses.
Would it be worthwhile to get a Pentax DSLR so I can get some use out of that older gear?
http://www.bananas.org/images/smilies/bananas/08.gif

You'll love your new gear!
Here is the 400 2.8 with nano technology and vibration reduction. The number 2.8 refers to the maximum opening of the aperture inside the lens. Bigger opening = more light through the lens and onto the sensor/film = the ability to use a way faster shutter speed to freeze the action even in low light conditions while using a low ISO. It also makes for amazing bokeh! It's also the fastest focusing lens of it's type with razor sharp images and zero distortion. Only $9K Every once in a while one pops up on ebay for a little less.
Remember bigger numbers like 4.5 - 5.6 is actually a smaller aperture opening = slow lens.

Ok cool. I think I'm just nervous when I handle and use it...so I shake a lot. I'll get used to it. This is a big step for me.
Guess where I might be going this weekend? To the Toronto zoo...where I can have the most incredible subjects to shoot of all!!! :goteam: I'm going to zoom right in on the animals' faces!
This is a long weekend for us with Monday being a civic holiday. Us Canadians love our long weekends and find any excuse to enjoy one. :ha: So I'll likely hit a beach this weekend as well and can get some shots of Lake Erie along with a lighthouse...where I can use my zoom lens! Might end up at storybook gardens and Springbank park too, and I'll get some bird in trees shots.
I've got a couple weeks to try it all out before fully deciding to keep it so I wanna go places where I can take some really nice pictures and see if this thing is worth the money I soaked into it! I know it is but I'm dying to take these kinds of pictures and it's why I bought it.
Sorry to ramble but I'm totally excited! :08:
You know what would be a good idea? Is if you went splits with someone who's a friend on that 400 lens...and shared it together. :) This would make it more affordable and less crazy. My mom has been going shopping with me these last few days and she has nearly fainted at the cost of the lenses I bought but I told her to wait until she sees the pictures. She would have a heart attack if I paid 9000 bucks for a lens! :ha:
Anyway, can't wait to post my weekend shots next week. They should be terrific...

Remember, the best camera is the one you have with you when you need one. The camera does not take the photo, the person behind it does. I could buy the most expensive camera or lens in the world and that guarantees me absolutely nothing. Photography is an art, a vision, a feeling, a desire to create, both in camera and post process.
There are some general photography rules that do help once you understand them, but at the end of the day it's still a very personal and subjective art form.
Good thing is that digital film is free. Don't be afraid to pull the trigger! :)

If you have a few extra bucks do yourself a favor and get one of these. This is the best R type strap on the market.
Carry Speed - Original Offset Design Tripod Ready Sling Strap (http://www.carryspeed.com/)
And make sure you always have a lens filter on all your lenses! I'm not talking about the lens cover, it's a clear piece of glass that protects the lens from damage while shooting.

I have the glass filter you're talking about...the guy showed me someone's lens that was cracked in the middle because they didn't have a filter on!
Should I buy a filter for each lens...or do I use the same one and just put it on the lens I'm using at the time?
Ok the canon bag I bought was really expensive and it came with thick cushioned straps just like ones in your link...plus an extra strap too. It's extremely comfortable to carry.
They also had backpacks, for hiking and cycling, but I'd be terrified to ride my bike with my camera...at least at first. It was a gorgeous bag with all these cushions inside...I nearly bought it. I thought the one I got was better suited to me for now though. It's a really good-looking bag and I love that it holds absolutely everything...including my manual!
Or do you mean a strap for my actual camera? It came with a standard canon strap but I can pick up one of those other ones today if you think it'll be better. I want to be comfortable because this camera is heavier than I'm used to.

To protect every lens you own, you put a glass filter on every one, then basically forget them. They are pretty cheap and will help keep from getting scratches on your lenses (or on the lens coatings, also a bad thing) ...

Yes one just for the camera. You will find that carrying a whole bag of gear is not always fun. There will be times when you'll want to carry minimal gear and this strap is nothing like a stock strap. This is very comfy, keeps the camera in a position that's safe in crowds, does not bounce around, and makes it very easy to grab the camera and shoot quickly due to the slider. It has a bracket that allows the use of a tri pod unlike the other straps that screw directly into the tri pod mounting hole. You'll get tired of that Canon short camera strap being around your neck with the camera bouncing off your rib cage, or other body parts very soon.

We decided we definitely are going to the zoo tomorrow! I'm gonna take some killer shots...or try to, I mean. :ha:
Ok so I'll pick up a couple more filters as well...for my other 2 lenses. They're only 30 bucks each and it sounds like they're worth it. When I saw someone's cracked lens because they didn't have a filter, I was horrified! Why would someone spend all that money on a lens and then not put out for a filter?! I guess they sure learned their lesson the hard way, but I won't be.

Velvety hills at sunset. You guessed it: 10x…
And now the best part: That camera only cost $170.-. :)
Of course, the 10x... is a bit extreme and you can have naturally everything down to wide angle and in between
available, but I just wanted to test the picture quality at max. tele.
Now, that I have a touch of experience with the 'optical steady shot' and telephoto features. I have to try out
the 'sweep panorama' and the HD movie. :)

Congrats, Olaf. Nice shots! :D
Mitchel, I am shocked!
Let's just say I'm keeping these cameras and think they're worth every red freakin penny!!! :goteam:
I was worried all the way home that the pics I took today would somehow be not that great or super blurry once I loaded them. Omg was I wrong!
Ok, here's a shot of a Giraffe that I took with the canon dslr using the 70-300 zoom lens...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/IMG_0151.jpg
I also recently picked up a canon digital "powershot" camera with a 15x zoom lens and 12.1 megapixels. This grizzly bear was shot with it...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/IMG_0155.jpg
I'm gonna start a new thread soon and show all the zoo shots I took today eventually. It's gonna take some time to load then all...and plus I'm shooting more and more each day this long weekend! We're now also entertaining thoughts of going to African Lion's Safari! I'll hit the beach one day too and get some good pics.
Chat soon...

Concerns I have...
When I was at the zoo, I pretty much walked around with my camera around my neck all day...like everyone else who had a camera like mine seemed to be doing. I was concerned though about the sun being on it, with it being black and all too. Of course I had the lens cover on in between shootings but is it wise to have the camera exposed to the sun like that for a long time?
Also...
What about when you're done using your camera and you want to put it in the trunk of the car...is it ok to put it into a hot trunk? I was too worried about it and just ended up carrying it with me.
Oh and I went back and got that fantastic hiking napsack that's totally cushioned and super comfy to carry. Way more room than the Canon bag, but I'll keep it too for short fast trips. Check out the backpack though...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/IMG_0189.jpg
They're new and they just got them in. See how thick and cushioned the shoulder strap is...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/IMG_0191.jpg
It cost a bill but it's well worth the money...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/IMG_0195.jpg
It's so thickly cushioned and there are so many different compartments to keep things well organized...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/IMG_0192-1.jpg
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/IMG_0194.jpg
The camera fits at the very top of the bag in an extremely cushioned area...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/IMG_0196.jpg
I'm going back to the zoo within the week and I'm looking forward to using the backpack instead of the other smaller bag. Gonna get that camera strap you mentioned too, Mitchel. ;)

"What about when you're done using your camera and you want to put it in the trunk of the car..

No Sherry, the hot trunk is definitely not okay. I am quite sure, if you read through your instructions,
they warn you about that. Any outside temp is fine, but the trunk gets hotter than any desert can throw at you.
You may want to get yourself one of this small insulated bags with a cooling brick (?) inside.
Best,
Olaf
momoese

Never leave it in the trunk, it will over heat and or be stolen.
Outside temps are not a problem until wintertime when you'll need to worry about condensation building inside the lenses going from one temp to another. Google that to see what others are doing.
Strap = told ya so! ;)

I knew it wasn't a good idea to put it in the hot trunk! So glad I decided not to! :D
I also saw this girl at the zoo like me who had the same camera around her neck and she wasn't even supporting it at all! I didn't think it was too good for the camera, let alone her chest, for it to be bopping and bouncing all around. I saw that most people were holding theirs with one hand to support and protect it. I did the same with mine, and never once let it just dangle or hang. I felt protective and didn't want anything to happen to it.
In a couple hours I'm going to pick up that cushioned camera strap. Bet it will be real comfy. :) Yup Mitch, you were right!
Ok, so no hot trunks. I will for sure find out about condensation on the lens in wintertime too and find out what to do to curb it. I plan on taking lots of winter shots.
We're going back to the zoo soon, so we can see the animals we missed. It's such a huge park, you really need two days to see it all. I missed the Gorillas but plan on shooting them the 2nd visit, in a few days. I'm so pleased with the quality of the pictures and can't wait to take some more! :goteam:

Ok this is the best strap they have Mitchel, so let me know what you think...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/3rd%20album/IMG_0205.jpg
An inflated price but the sales guy claimed he owns one also and that it's super comfy with extra cushioning. It's tripod ready as well! I'm going back to the zoo tomorrow, so we'll see just how comfy it really is...
Oh and I got the other filters now too, so I have one for all three lenses. This will be more convenient for me.
I plan on taking even nicer shots this 2nd time. Last week was my first time and I was still getting used to things. Gonna catch all the animals I missed the first visit.
Ok so now I have absolutely everything I need to support my obsession...I mean hobby! :ha: Thanks so much everyone for all your help and suggestions. :goteam:

The Hollyberry Lady

Now I'm not so sure if that strap is right for me after all. :(
In the picture, the guy's camera is hooked at the top, but my camera can only be hooked from the bottom, so it would be on my hip completely upside down! Unless there's something I don't know.
I'm gonna take it back to the store and get the sales person to show me something better. Or am I supposed to hold the camera right side up? I don't get it, so I better inquire.
Didn't go to the zoo today because Toronto is rainy all weekend so we'll hit there early next week. Plus we're gonna check out Marineland in the Falls too...hoping to get some killer shots there. :goteam:
Oh and one of the filters I bought doesn't fit the lens that came with the camera so I gotta exchange it. I also had bought one of those pens to clean the lenses but I seemed to have misplaced it and can't find it anywhere!
: )

No wrong strap. Just buy the one I posted a link to even if you have to buy it online. There is no better strap.
The R strap that you bought eliminates the ability to use a tri pod. Not good.
The Hollyberry Lady
08-07-2011, 11:03 AM
Ok I'll get the other one but it says this one IS tripod ready and the hook even comes away from the strap so you can put it on your tripod.
Maybe I'm just confused. I'm taking it back today and I'll get the one you posted about, Mitchel.
I noticed after looking at my receipt last night that the filter I bought for the zoom lens was 60 bucks! The other two were 30 each. I guess it's a lot cheaper than replacing your damaged lens though.
What do you recommend for cleaning the lenses?
: )
momoese
08-07-2011, 12:38 PM
Well if it still allows the use of a tri pod maybe you should try it. Ideally the lens should hang down anyway. I know the first generation of R straps made by that company used the tri pod fastener which sucks when you want to use a tri pod.
Ask at the store for a lens cleaning kit. It should have a dusting brush that you squeeze and air comes out, and a micro fiber cloth with some special cleaning solution.

I am thrilled with my new camera. Unlike Sherry I am not after professional quality pictures, but after
practicality when travelling. This wee little thing I can easily carry around in my pant pockets and I won't even
know, that it is there and when I go out in the evening I can stick my little tripod (6" long when folded) in the
same pocket. The pictures I have posted in this thread are not aimed to pursue the highest quality, but to
test the limits of the instrument's performance while still delivering a high quality. And that it does!

This photo was taken today 24hrs and 2 min. after the one below, this time with tripod and less zoom (I wanted to get
the moon also in there). While I was very happy with the result of yesterday's hand held effort, which is important when
travelling, the tripod support clearly produced superior results.
The Hollyberry Lady

Very nice shots, Olaf!!! Love the reflection on the water and the moon in the 2nd shot.
Ok so I kept the strap I have because it's incredibly comfortable and all I had to do was buy a small little piece that screws in, to make it completely tripod ready. It's an upgrade from the older straps. I really like it, now that I know more about it.
I tried on this other strap though that actually had a holster for your camera to fit into! It was too fancy and heavy though and I felt like I was in some kind of a ridiculous Sheriff get up! :ha: It had two straps for each shoulder and a waist belt with a holster on each side. It could carry two cameras.
Oh and I found out why the one filter was 60 bucks...because it has a UV protector as well. I thought this was important so I took the other two back and got the UV protectors filters for them also. Now all three of my lenses are protected.
I was told that even though you have a filter on your lenses, particles can still get in between, so I'll have to take the filters off and clean the lenses sometimes.
Thanks for letting me know what to use for cleaning, Mitchel. ;)

Hi Mitchel,
I stared at the sky in both pictures repeatedly back and forth and could not discern any difference. - Until I
looked at the respective reflections of the sky in the water. There the difference was clearly evident. :)
Now I have to figure out what a CS5 noise reduction is and how to get/achieve it. I have taken two
more shots of the same scene as it got darker, but the pictures got progressively grainier. Maybe they
can be saved too? :)
Actually I will probably toss all these photos out, as they are just for practice and to determine the limits
of this new camera for the times. when the objects are more unique than our own back yard.
Thanks,
Olaf

Gosh, thanks Mitchel! ;)
That particular shot was taken with my DSLR camera, using the 70-300 mm zoom lens. Most of last night's pics were taken with the DSLR camera although a couple were shot with my little canon digital camera.
Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is "banding"...and is it a good thing?!
: )
No banding is not a good thing. What you have is called "gradient banding" Look at the photos and you'll see horizontal banding where the colors don't melt together, they are stepped or banded. You see this in the sky where the colors change.
1. Are you post processing and if so what application are you using?
2. Are you shooting at the max file size for the camera?
3. Are you shooting in jpg or RAW?
Here is a crop taken from the photo I like from your trip. I took it into photo shop, enlarged to 2000 pixels wide and selected an area from the center. You can see the horizontal banding. There are ways to remove it but it shouldn't be there in the first place.

That's the thing Mitchel...I don't know! :ha: I've just been winging it!
When I first bought the camera, I was busy...going to the zoo and spending a week at the Falls, plus now I've been in port stanley for heading on two months! The truth of the matter is, (even though I'm ashamed to admit it :o) I haven't really read the manual from cover to cover...merely skimmed it.
I've never edited my pics in any way. I just snap them and then load them from my memory card to photobucket and then to banana org. I wouldn't know the first thing about post processing.
I think the reason for this banding business, could be just my ignorance about the proper settings to use, etc. I really need to take the time to read more thoroughly and I'm certain my pics will get better. Just been having too much fun to be bothered with studying. :D
Thanks for explaining things to me. So you think I should edit my photos? But then I think they'll be like fakes and not real. I suppose a little enhancement here and there couldn't hurt. I really don't know how to do this yet though and I can't answer your other questions either...yet.
Give me time but I will improve. I'm still an amateur just yet...don't forget. ;)

Aww ok. You must have the camera set on a lower quality. Even at a lower quality P-bucket is using their software to re size it and in the process your getting some banding. That would be my guess anyway.
About your feeling on editing/processing. All digital photos are processed by the camera if your shooting .jpg and not RAW. The white balance, saturation, contrast, sharpness etc are done by the camera in jpeg. Even real film had to be processed and there were a ton of ways to change the look of the final product.
There are many ways to post process digital, some for a more realistic look like what your eyes saw when you shot the photo, some more artistic. Just depends on what you want to do with it.

Hi there.
I'm actually a photographer so if you have any settings, editing questions please let me know.
If you're going to be taking a ton of pictures and want to be able to sort through them quickly, post easily online and auto-edit through your own specs you should get Lightroom. You can get an older version for not too much on Amazon or elsewhere.

But I would be happy to help you with identifying good lenses for different things and more.

I'll post a couple tips.
1. Learn to use the camera in Aperature priority first and then go towards shooting in manual.
2. Cloudy days are your friend, it creates even lighting for subjects and options (like your plants and flowers).
3. Make sure to use your over and under exposure buttons.
4. If you are shooting closeups of flowers and such try to get a macro/micro lens. I have had a 60mm and currently have a 105mm 2.8 lens and they are fantastic when shooting closeups.
5. Starting point for outdoors should be iso 200-400 and indoors 600-800.
6. Also, don't use your on-camera flash as it is flat and too close to the camera body (red eye). Purchase and learn to use an on-camera flash. It does wonders although a little intimidating at first.
7. Learn about bouncing flash, angling the flash, and diffusing, lowering and adding power.
8. If you can afford big memory cards always shoot in RAW. All Photoshops come with a built in Raw editor. They are very basic, but will give you tons more options on editing Camera style mistakes/edits. Like exposure, light tones, dark tones, chromatic aberration etc. So if you can't afford lightroom you can do a lot more editing shooting in Raw. Just rememeber the files are larger. Best thing is that the original files will never be touched when you do edit them. It actually creates a copy of it until you save it.
I'm not a pro, but I have done tons of research and learned a lot from experience.
So if anyone has a question please message me on here and I'd be happy to help.
I shoot Nikon and use two cameras and do weddings and potraits as well as nature/random stuff.
Hope I can help!

Lol I didn't realize how old the thread was, but congrats on your purchase. Although I use Nikon, Canon is a great product and I'm sure the more you learn about it, the more you'll be able to do with it and the more you'll want to do with it.
It can quickly become addictive to take pictures especially if you have important subjects.

As for processing Adobe Photoshop is king, but the learning curve is huge! They also make Light Room which is very useful. Some of my friends are almost exclusively using LR now. There are several free processing softwares out there. GIMP is a knockoff of PS (sort of) and it works great.

It might have something to do with your machine or connection. It is a very large piece of software but not 80 hours large. Idk, I'm no IT guy. Maybe someone else can chime in.
Or you could just buy it! It's worth every penny if this is what makes you happy.

There are some free editors out there as well if you're looking for something basic.
But, your pictures are looking very good without editing.

These cameras work great for me. But, of course if I start making some good money with weddings I'd be happy to look at a nice Full Sensor camera, but those are so expensive. A couple of Nikons are coming out before the summer time so I'd be curious to see what they're like. A D700 would be great. Very expensive hobby, side business if you really get into it.

Thank you for the compliment about my pictures, Tommyg. :) I strive for them to be better though.
Yeah, my ex-boyfriend used to make a small fortune filming people's weddings and special events. He wasn't even a professional but he just had a good video camera and practiced lots....next thing you know, people were hiring him.
I'm not interested in taking shots for other people though...just myself. :ha: Well and for you guys too. ;)
Yeah, I surely might buy that program, Mitchel. I have a feeling I'll love it and Photobucket's options are limited and kinda boring now. I need something more.
Weird but last night I had a dream that I lost my camera bag! I'm always paranoid when I'm out, that someone could try to steal it on me, so maybe this is why. It seemed so real and when I woke up I thought my camera was really gone! Took a few seconds to realize it was a dream.

Ok so I'm finally buckling down and reading this manual for my canon rebel xs camera and learning lots already. No wonder I've been putting it off though...it's nearly 200 pages!!! :ha:
Wow, there's so much to learn but I'm gonna keep reading more and more each day until I learn how to use my camera to it's full potential. I'm ashamed to say that all my shots to date have been taken without learning how to properly use it yet. I was on vacation and didn't feel like reading an intense 200 page manual. I want to now though.
Too funny...
I was noticing the area on the display window where it tells how many shots are remaining on your memory card. I noticed it read 7063!!!
Do you think I should carry a back-up card in case I run out of room?! :ha:
I bought a huge card for this camera because I didn't want to have to worry about running out of picture room and always having to switch and use 8 different cards. It was too funny though, seeing such a giant number when the picture in the manual shows the number 393!!! :ha:

You are probably shooting at a very low size or resolution. It doesn't matter unless you try to get them printed large. So i'd say you're well on your way. There are lots of good videos on youtube as well as most of learning is by doing. I'd start by playing with Aperature priority mode and later work towards manual mode. Right down what settings you use or just remember them and find a "starting point" setting that works for you and keep practicing from there. Soon enough you'll know the settings for different environments. When you shoot in manual mode you'll be able to adjust a lot and get nice effects as well.
Good starting setting for outdoors is 250 ISO, Aperature 5, shutter speed 120 percent of your lens. So if your lens is a 50mm lens don't go lower than 1/70th.
For indoors with good lighting you can be at 600 or 800 ISO, aperature 5 or smaller if possible, same rule applies for shutter speed.
But you'll get the hang of it. You are taking great pics so far. The big A is the aperature priority setting. Play around with it and you'll see it gets better.
But its a crazy hobby as you learn more you'll want to learn even more and do more with it.

That's the spirit! If you were to close down the aperture (bigger number) a little then more of the flowers would be in focus. Either that or move further away from them, same effect but then you'd have to crop the photo. Research Depth Of Field.
Try turning off the auto focus so you can select the area of the photo you want in perfect focus. There are other ways to achieve the same result but it's it's great to know how to manually focus your lens.

I HAVE actually used the manual focus, but it was an accident!
I didn't realize that I had slid the AF button over to MF. Furthermore I didn't even realize what the letters stood for until I read some of the manual. :ha:
I liked the manual focus too because you can really make sure it's clear. I don't use my tripod too often because it's just not convenient sometimes.
I think I get what you're saying Mitchel, and I'll just goof around with the settings and then take a shot to see if it's what I want. I liked what Tommy said about writing things down that work out. Being new, I would forget what settings I used for different things. There's also a booklet that came with my lenses that tells you what settings to use for different types of shots.
I gotta keep reading...

It's a great camera but there is no extra lens, just the 55-200mm. The lens is ok but not very fast (not great for low light situations where flash is wanted) and not wide angle. If you can find a package with the other kit lens 18-105mm I'd opt for that. It's nice having the ability to shoot wide angle. If you need a long lens you can add one later.

The 18-55 is a very versatile lens, as is the 55-300. The two together cover pretty much every thing but macro. The major difference in the two bodies is the swivel lcd, a little larger sensor and a full frame per second faster burst mode on the D5100. Also if you plan on bargain hunting for older Nikon glass in the future then you want the D5100 because the D3100 won't be able to auto focus the old glass.

For the price the 18-55mm lens is fantastic.
But, depends what you're shooting. If you are doing street photography and short to medium shots a prime lens might be a better option. A 50mm lens would run you about $120. It would be faster, gather more light, and be sharper as well.
But if you are buying a camera + lens package the 18-55mm is a fantastic lens. Personally I like the 55-200mm lens. It is overall a better lens than the 55-300mm. The 300 is a little softer on both ends. Get the VR version. Also remember that these are crop sensor cameras so the 200mm is "actually" getting you a 300mm view.
KenRockwell.com: Photography, Cameras and Taking Better Pictures (http://www.kenrockwell.com) has reviews on most lenses and he can be critical, and also very pro-to some lenses.
If you haven't bought anything at all yet I'd suggest getting a used or new D90 BODY and a 50mm or 18-55mm, and later the 55-200mm. Depends on your purposes as well.
Once you do weddings, macros and scenery you'll know what kind of lens you'd want to meet your needs. So the 18-55 ($160) or the 50mm ($120) could be a good start and then go from there.
Just my two cents. Hope it helped and didn't confuse you.

I also have a D90 and love it, but if you want to make cool videos using your nice glass the newer models are better. D90 is 720p while the new D5100 is 1080p auto focus and has a stereo input for a real mic. Although if someone was really into making cinema quality movies the Canon DSLR's are far superior. A lot of independent film makers are using Canon and GoPro HD cameras.
If video is of no concern then a used D90 with an extended warranty would be a sweet deal. Look around and you can find package deals that includes some nice glass, filters, speedlight, tripod, bag, extra battery, etc etc. Craigslist is a great resource for that.

Hey Olafhenny nice shots!
Which camera you used to take those pics.
Just a cheap little 'point 'n shoot' Sony Cybershot DSC-H55 ($170.-), which has some, for me, nice
features though, because I travel a lot. It is small, 6 1/2 oz, fits easily into any pocket, 10x optical with
great image stabilizer, great video capability and a whole slew of other "intelligent" features, which
allow me to take quality pictures in difficult situations, where I don't have time to 'set up'.
And when in a couple of years they have a model, which hops out of my pocket all by itself when there
is a good shot out there, I will be able to upgrade to that as well without suffering greatly financially :)
I had in my early days of 35mm films a Zeiss Contaflex Super and never took any pictures, because the
bleeping thing was too much of an effort to lug around.

I have just ordered a 32 GB card for less that $60.-. That should give me the equivalent of more than 6 hrs

There is no replacement of a DSLR with a point and shoot. Maybe at the optimum settings on a secific style of shooting the pics will come out really well, but the DSLR has a lot more manual settings, does bette with white balance, light intake and is much faster.
Regarding to the 3100 vs a d90.. Hands down D90. Buy one used on amazon from a business not from a person selling it or find one locally on craigslist. You will find that ligher also means more camera movement. You will appreciate a little weight to the camera also when you start getting bigger lenses. but its all inhow it feels in yourhands. Heavier is usually a good thing. If you look at all the pro level cameras they have metal or magnesium alloy bodies which makes them heavier but also sturdier.
A used d90 would probably be around 500-650 depending on where you look and who you buy it from. I needed some extra cash to help buy a d7000 and i sold mine for about 480 in mint condition.
Ifyou plan on takin gtons of pics and really getting to know your camera buy as much a you can afford. I was hesitant and later fell in love with taking pics that I bought a d3000, then a d5000 and then a d90. Then I got the d7000 which I want a second of as well now. In the end a great lens will make all the difference, just be realistic about your camera expectations. If you know your cameras limits and are perfect within those limits then awesome. I know some people who have a D200 and still love to use it daily. This is an expensive hobby if you like to upgrade, but if you are just shooting street pics and lots of candids and not many in low light, you would do perfectly fine with a d90 for years! The best peice of advise I can give is to practice practice practice and learn to use as many of your settings in manual as possible. Shooting in auto is fun, but there are tons of pics you will NEVER get if you only shoot in auto. Plus you get a huge sense of acheivement walking up to take a pic somewhere and KNOWING your settings will work well even before you pick up the camera.

If I had had my new (point ‘n shoot w. image stabilizer) camera, these porkers’ portrait, shot through the
windshield of a moving taxi, would have come out much better.

Same piggies through the side window.
If I had not had had my point ‘n shoot in my pocket, but one of these more sophisticated cameras in a
tote bag, I would probably have missed most, if not all of these shots and thousands more like them.
I have made over the years quite some respectable photos of flowers and sceneries, but I would not
even trade the miserable shots of the pig transport for the best of these.

That may be so, but it depends very much, what you want from your camera.
I've always said the "best" camera is the one you have on you when it's needed. :)

I've always said the "best" camera is the one you have on you when it's needed. :)
Just three point 'n shoot pictures of today's (last Sunday's) visitor. Unfortunately he was uncooperative and
posed so, that I had to shoot straight into the light. Therefore the photos are not perfect, but I "had" the
camera, when I "needed it :)

I kinda like this picture. If I hadn’t been able to whip my little point ‘n shoot out of my pocket at a moment’s
notice, I would have missed that lady paddling by. And I would have had a bunch of bamboo set in concrete.
:)

Therefore, while a high quality camera is great for refined and art photography, for my purpose of “catching
the moment”, whenever it occurs, something I have in my pocket all the time is more helpful.
And my new point n' shoot, with 10x magnification and image stabilizer will open brand new possibilities.

I agree, and think that's a fantastic shot Olaf. ;)
It's not like I walk around everyday carrying my dslr camera, three lenses, and all my gear. Most of the time I only have my little pocket digital camera with me, so I'm lucky to even get a shot at all! :ha:

I noticed some prettyt good advice given to someone who was having trouble getting pix onto the .org. I have a slightly different problem, and I didn't want to hijack her thread, so I'm asking it here.
I have no problem with uploading the pictres here. I just can't get the pictures from my camera into my computer. I have a little Nikon Cool Pix point and shoot. It came with a cable to transfer pictures from the camera to the 'puter. When you plug the cable into the camera, a screen comes up, with a listing of the pictures to be transferred. In the lower right hand corner is a button that says, "Start Transfer". You click on that and the pictures go into the computer. It worked fine for some time but, the last time when I clicked on the start transfer button, the whole screen just disappeared, and nothing happened.

After trying all the updates and and wasting hours of your time searching endless posts about this problem.
I would just remove the memory card from the camera and plug it in to one of the memory slots on your computer . If you dont have a memory slot then you can pick up a usb connectable model cheaply
Just be sure your memory card fits

When your camera is plugged into your computer, if you open the "my computer" can you see the camera listed as some type of removable drive? If you do then you should be able to keep opining folders under that drive until you end up with a folder with all the pictures on the card. Then you can copy/paste them to where you want them.

Trebor - I had purchased one of those card reader USB things, but I can't get it to work. My card is an SD, and the gadget says USB on it. I hope I got it in right. Even though I had already put the card in it, it keeps saying that I have to insert a disk in the drive. There is a little blue light on it that came on once, but it still says that I have to insert a disc.
Dangermouse - That worked. I found the picture, and moved it to My Pictures, where I could crop it as I wanted. One more question, though. It seems that every picture I took is on there, even ones that I deleted on the camera. It also says something like 207 pictures taken. 362 remaining. What does that mean?
