I dont think they are as strong in general. I wonder if they are variegated because of some type of genetic virus (like cannas with viruses are). If it didnt have irregular variegation than I would probably say that it is as strong as any other Musa Basjoo, but the fact that it doesnt makes me think that if it dies to the ground, it wont come back from the main plant (and maybe not variegated. Im not really sure though!

Mine doesnt seem to be any different in hardiness terms compared to a normal basjoo. That said i have only had it one season. I have been growing many basjoo for several years trying to get a varigated one.

There are several potential causes for variegation, Chimeral, Reflective, Pigmentary and Pathological. Which one is dominent in any given plant is anyones guess

Hi Ivan,

Like Alan (muse monkey) has said it does depend on what type of variegation your plant has?
I’ve had a few variegated Basjoos, the first (the mother plant) was very beautifully variegated but the leaves would burn easily in full sun.
It produced several pups, one white, two with variegation, and three normal green.
The white pup died slowly after separation from the mother plant.
I gave one of the var… pups to Mark Hall and kept the other, that was planted out after a year old and it spent three winters in the garden without any protection, I would say it was just as hardy as normal basjoo, but the more light colour you get in the leaf the less it can produce photosynthesis and that will slow down or weaken the plant.
