I used plain red cypress mulch last year with success...I found it at a gas station at this time of year for 1$ a bag! I scooped it up and saved it in spring and just put it back down again yesterday.

Cypress is bad. Do not use cypress - it's ground up cypress trees. That's like eating a bald eagle or a manatee. It's just wrong.
Pine needles combined with live oak leaves piled way up high make a great mulch for bananas - especially for keeping the entire root area from freezing.

Do maple leaves work or not? They don't seem to me that they'd work 'cause they tend to stay wet. Thanks.
