Not really worried if this will save the stem or not,it will grow from the corm if all fails,Ive surrounded also with sheets of plywood to direct the rain/melting snow away, kept me busy though!!!

I decided to over-winter my basjoo today. I still plan on putting a tarp over the whole thing, but so far it looks pretty safe for at least the rest of the month. It got down to 26F last night.

I think the best temp. for overwintering basjoo is about 45*F. That may be a bit on the cool side, but maybe not. I've tried to overwinter them indoors at around 60*F and they didn't do too well. They actually do better outside in the ground in zone 7. The other Musa that I tried this way did just fine, but not the basjoos. When they have had all their leaves removed you want to keep them very dormant. If you let them get too warm they will try to grow but if they don't have any light then they will perish. Of course, if you can keep them at 90*F with good lighting they will do great indoors in the winter.

After a late warm up with soil temperatures ranging in the mid 40s, my over-wintered bananas have broken through their protection and are trying to grow new leaves. I guess I tried over-wintering it way too early.

Here's how it looks like. I guess I should make sure I wait until after the last warm-up to cover them up.

I had to take a peak at one of my protected basjoos, and surprisingly the stems are still as green as they were when I covered them. I don't know if that means they'll pick off where they left off, but based on how they look, they are definitely still alive. It will be at least 2 months before they start growing, but I'm glad to see they're OK. I'm sure other people in the Ontario region understand how I feel, this being the first winter I-ve over-wintered bananas. It got down as low as -9F which is extremely cold for where I'm at, which makes it even more amazing.

How's it looking for everyone else?

overwintering with pipe heat cables worked better than expected, all 6 stems with pipe heating cable survived, didnt lose an inch, the remaining stems I had covered with the foam pipe insulaters and those got fried to the ground, but corms are all good ,I beleive the winter low was somewhere around -26 c. I will be keeping the cables on these and the encloser up in case of frost for another month or so.http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=41677&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=41677&ppuser=4074)

Both uncovered the same time, stem protection vs corm protection
