Take a look and tell me what this might be. I bought it and it was marked on the pot Passiflora Pressii, but I can't find that name anywhere online. It looks more like P. coccinea to me. Whatever it is, it is not supposed to be in Hawaii.

It is actually p.edulis edulis.
Right. This is standard scientific naming convention. You give the name of the organism, in this case Passiflora edulis, followed by the name of the person who named the species, in this case Sims. Any cultivar of Passiflora edulis should technically be followed by Sims. This naming convention is now ignored in lots of scientific writing, presumably to shorten the writing.

I don't know for sure what this is, but the leaves resemble some types of passiflora I've seen you folks post photos of. It is a 'volunteer' plant that is growing in the back center of my garden plot. I would never have planted any there so I know it is not my doing. I'm still trying to locate a photo online of the leaves to compare. Unfortunately it has been hit with my weed-eater, but once I saw the leaves and recognized it as a probable passiflora type, I am now protecting it until I see just what it is. We have P. edulis and P. suberosa growing all over the place, but this is not one of those. I've been told that P. quadrangularis grows here, but I have no idea what the leaves look like. It would be just too much of a coincidence to be that one. Sunfish - I'm counting on you, but I'm still looking in the meantime. Mahalo.

I'd say that is probably what it is, although I do see some variation in the leaf shape in the pictures on-line. That appears to be due to the size of the plant; the older vines have a more rounded/ovoid shape in their leaves. Bloom seems to be small, but not as small as the P. suberosa, and about the same light green color, but with a dark circular area. I have not seen any blooms around my garden that look like it yet, but at least I know what to look for now.
Tks again. :08:

Two people have said a young P. suberosa
Passiflora suberosa (http://www.passionflow.co.uk/passiflora-suberosa.htm)
If they knew that P. suberosa grows all over this place, and therefore is present to compare and eliminate as a possibility, they would not have guessed that. The P. suberosa leaves look like bird's feet, with the center lobe being as long as, or even longer than, the side lobes. On this one, the center lobe is almost missing, and on some larger plants is completely absorbed in the rest of the leaf. I think you have it pegged already.
I would have to admit though, that due to the very small size of the bloom, and its very close resemblence to P. suberosa, I'd be willing to bet that they would be able to be crossed with each other - buy who would want to? I don't see much appeal to the blooms based on the relative lack of size and color.

I collected some fruit from it today. There were no open flower buds on the plant, but lots of both mature and immature fruit. I'm going to try germinating it. I'm thinking Passiflora caerulea. What do you think? Also, what medium should I try germinating the seeds in?

You can spread out the seed let the pulp dry out and then just rub off. No need to remove pulp for sowing. Those seed will germinate outside now no need for heat mat.

Quote "What this country needs is dirtier fingernails and cleaner minds." Whoohoo
These were growing wild by themselves, but since they are on my side of the garden plot, and they get my water and fertilizer, I consider these to be mine now. Thus far, I have three that were already growing here before I got my garden plot - Passiflora edulis var flavicarpa (in the photo), P. suberosa, and a newly discovered (for me anyway) P. coriacea. It is more expensive to live here, but I feel quite blessed by its bounty.

The pictures on this thread are amazing. I love the Passiflora blooms. Just stunning! Kudos to you all.
I've tried twice, unsuccessfully, to germinate both P. edulis and P. incarnata. 0% germination rate. On the last attempt, I tried a 2 day soak in 5% ethanol cider, as that is supposed to help leech out the germination inhibitors from the seeds. Still no joy. :(
I'm wondering if my seed is just too old? I purchased it early this year, but that's no guarantee of viability.
Can anyone point me in the direction for good, fresh seed? This thread has really inspired me. I want to try again.

I'm wondering if my seed is just too old? I purchased it early this year, but that's no guarantee of viability.
Tony would know best, but the only Passiflora seeds I bought on the internet never germinated. Probably too old. The ones I harvested from a ripe fruit basically all germinated with no special treatment.

Well the seed don't necessarily need to be fresh from the fruit. Some seed are empty and won't germinate no matter how fresh.I've germinated passiflora seed that are 3 years old.

OK, my p. incarnata has gotten completely out of hand. Not only is it moving to cover more fence at the speed of a small train, its in the yard, and worse, is now in the neighbor's yard and trees and shrubs. I was hoping she would say she liked it, but she's now moving and I don't see a passiflora infestation as a positive selling point. So if necessary, how do I kill it off? Can I be selective and allow some to stay-or will I just be postponing the inevitable? It covers over 50 feet of fence. Thanks all.

OK you passion flower gurus, I saw this passion flower plant at the store and at first
passed it up, thought about it a while, and had to go back and buy it. I have no
idea what it might be, but I'm pretty sure it is not what it is marked as. The tags are
confusing. The one in the pot says 'Passiflora Edulis'
<a href=http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=49388><img src=http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=49388&size=1 border=0></a>
and the sticker on the pot says 'Passiflora Purp. E. Playboy' which makes me think it may
be a hybrid, or a specific P. edulis cultivar.
<a href=http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=49383><img src=http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=49383&size=1 border=0></a>
I don't think it is a straight P. edulis since if you look at the leaves, they are quite different.
P. edulis has leaves that resemble a 3-fingered mitten, while these are rather heart shaped.
They are also larger than the P. edulis I've seen.
<a href=http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=49386><img src=http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=49386&size=1 border=0></a>

<a href=http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=49385><img src=http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=49385&size=1 border=0></a>
And the stems have these flares or wings (like the 'Winged Bean') that I don't see on my P. edulis.
<a href=http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=49384><img src=http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=49384&size=1 border=0></a>

From 2 to 4.Quadrangularis has 6.
After a carful examination of the photos, the number that pops up consistentently is 4, two pairs. The one with 3 looks like one was broken off. I even saw one photo that looked like it may have had 5; two pairs and a 5th small bump that may or may not have been on of those glands. Do any of the ones you mentioned have those 'wings' on the stem?
I wonder how someone would mistake this for P. edulis? I'm not an expert, but it was obviously different. The leaves alone were a dead giveaway.
edit - I went back home and checked it out - it typically has 4 on each petiole. Thanks for the info, now I know of something else to check for when I see passiflora.

I think this is P. alata. This is the one that had P. edulis on the tag, but also had Passiflora Purp E. Playboy on the label on the pot. I believe it it is P. alata based on the 'wings' on the stems, or maybe a hybrid because of that name 'Playboy'. Anyone know what distinguishes P. alata from P. decaisneana? Oh, another thing I noticed was that it has three open blooms, and all of them hang straight down. My P. edulis does not do that.

Vitifolia
I believe that is one of the parents, but it was marked as P. Piresii, and I'm not experienced enough to know one from another. I know they look similar, but that's about all I know. If a cross is made isn't there some variation in the progeny so that some resemble one parent while some resemble the other, and some have characteristics of both? In orchids that is how it works; some are almost identical to one parent or the other, and the majority have a mixture of both parents to varying degrees.

You are right about the coronas, the orange one has no white in the corona, but the larger plant does have white. Is it possible that it is still a hybrid, but just exhibits the traits of the P. vitifolia parent? I'm not stuck on the hybrid aspect either way, I wanted P. vitifolia at some point anyway.

Sure it could be a hybrid.

Interesting link. The plant that I thought was P. mollissima is actually called P. tarminiana. There is apparently a beautiful white one, P. subpeltata, that I want to locate. The reddish one I just got resembles P. miniata, P. incarnata x miniata, or P. vitifolia more than a P. Piresii, with the color leaning more to the P. miniata, but a few petals fold back like the P. vitifolia so I'm not sure about what it really is.
Tks for that link. Lots of banana pictures, but not much info on the varieties they were. The Koa'e (Ae Ae) and Iholena plants were pretty obvious, but the others could be anything.

OK, since the incarnata is so successful that I have to kill it off before it devours the entire house and garden, are there any other possibilities for zone 7a that are less obstreperous? Cerulea seems to go like crazy too. Otherwise I have to just put out in pots so I can easily move them inside for the winter.

This plant has been grown for many years as Passiflora alata 'Ruby Glow' but more recently been identified as a species, Passiflora phoenicea,
There is p.alata and (p.alata ,ruby glow) Phoenicea. Two different plants, both very similar, flower s are almost identical, fruit is shaped different but taste the same. Not trying to be a smart a$$ just letting you know. You can find p.alata seed but not (p.alata ruby glow) phoenicea seed.

I'm giving Passiflora caerulea another shot. This time I'm going to try germinating them outside. I put several seeds in each pot, watered them in, and then covered it with a compost-perlite mixture. Hopefully it will do the trick this time, as the seeds are fresh.

Hey Tony! Thanks for the ID. It is blooming now, although I only just bought it from a nursery so I don't know if there are techniques used to force bloom. Yes alata and phoenicea flowers are almost identical quadrangularis is close. If it has two bright yellow glands on the petiole, leaf stem,it is phoemicea. No real difference in the taste of fruit between the two. You will need to pollnate the flowers with another passiflora ,caerulea works

If there are pollinators around, it'll set fruit. I don't have many around, so if I want nice big fruit, I have to hand pollinate. Just a q-tip, works great and is quick and easy.

Given that it's still a small plant, shouldn't take him more than a couple minutes a day. Yes, they will ripen. It takes mine a few months to ripen, but your plant will get a lot more heat than mine, so will probably ripen faster. I can't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure I've harvested into January, certainly December. I've never had ones that didn't ripen because it was too cold.

Here's a couple different varieties of Passiflora edulis: Fredericks and one I grew from seed of fruit from a plant in Moorea, French Polynesia. The flowers are very similar but distinguishable. In general, the Moorea one has more purple pigment on various parts, including the stems of the plant. Haven't been able to get the Moorea one to set fruit, despite being out there playing bee, with my q-tip.

Haven't been able to get the Moorea one to set fruit, despite being out there playing bee, with my q-tip.

Hi all, I need some help with id of my passiflora. It was sold as P. quadrangularis, but I realised straight away it wasn't the case as the leaves had 2 petiole glands, so my conclusion was P. phoenicea (according to: Passiflora alata Key (http://www.passionflow.co.uk/passiflora-alata-key.htm)). Before the flower buds opened I started to suspect that as the bracts were very small, hardly noticeable on many of them. Also the sepals seamed the same length as the petals, so I again checked the petiole glends and found some leaves (very few) with four of them. Today the first flowers opened and I'm even more confused. sepals do look shorter than petals, but not so much, the color is not as red as with P. alata, but not as purple as with P. phoenicea. Now I believe that it is either a cross between P. alata and P. phoenicea, or a variety of alata. Could it be that P. 'Ruby glow' is a cross between this two, or a form of P. alata? I've read that what used to be considered P. alata var. 'Ruby Glow" is now a separate species P. phoenicea. Again, maybe P. phoenicea and P. 'Ruby Glow' are not two of the same taxa... BTW, mine has purplish-lilac petals outside and the corona filaments seam much longer than those of P. phoenicea. To conclude, the plants has traits from both species. I was going to upload the pic, but can't do it straight from my camera, is there a way I;m not aware of? Many thanks.

Could be a hybrid of the two. I have fruit with this cross.

thank you Sunfish, that's my guess too, but I haven't had any experience with them before, only the info available on the internet (so much incorrect info there). btw, the color of the petals and sepals is actually a lot darker, richer purple than the camera captured, more blue hues than the red. i pollinated one flower with it's own pollen, and the other with P. caerulea, although doubt the fruit will manage to develop as it is only a matter of days when the min. (night) temps are going to drop below 15 centigrade. i'd appreciate if you'd tell me what's the min temp the flowers/fruit can stand, for P. quadrangularis too? I am expecting P. quadrangularis flowers to open any day. Also, is there a registered hybrid of P. phoenicea and P. alata? If yes, what would be the name? Sorry to bother, but searched the web and haven't managed to find any info on this. Many thanks!!!!

Phoenicea is fine at that temp.Even night time temp. of 50f is fine.Phoenicea will hold fruit all winter here with lows in the 40's.I have never got fruit on phoenicea with it's own pollen but caerulea works every time.I don't know of any registered hybrid but there must be one.Quadrangularis I don't know about other than what I've read ,no personal experience.
P.phoenicea glands,I have never seen more than 2

thank you very much for all the info + beautiful pics!! still, will have to bring it in soon as the winter is approaching and cut the longest stems + try to root the cuttings although haven't had much success so far. my mystery passy is definitely not pure P. phoenicea, so we'll see... i'll try and pollinate flowers with it's own pollen, that of P. caerulea and P. quadrangularis. If there is no registered hybrid of P. phoenicea and P. alata (any direction, which is REALLY strange) you could do it!!!

You're right Tony, apparently P. quadrangularis is very difficult to grow in conditions different from those in it's natural habitat, especially in our extremely hot and dry summer conditions. Have done the pollination in all possible combinations, so now am hoping it was successful and the fruits will manage to develop, even though I doubt that...

Yup. I hope next season will be better. After I tasted home grown Feijoa fruits I definite need more home grown tropicals:ha:

Do you find that a heat mat is needed for germination?

Just plain rockwool for germination and then pot into 50/50 coco coir and perlite or peat and perlite. Yes I have 100's of crosses/hybrid fruit

Cool. Do the leaves resemble alata or edulis, or somewhere in between?

More alat but with some serration on the leaves. This may be the only hybrid of these two in the U.S.

Mine gave up on that about a month ago, maybe a bit longer. Must be nice and toasty in your yard. Mine are still growing leaves, and it's a good thing because the fritillary caterpillars are going nuts on them. Strangely, so far they're only eating the Moorea P. edulis and not the Frederick.

Had to take them out and spray them, but since they got enormous I cut them down to about 1.5m. :((((( Along went the only fruit on P. x decaisneana. Now, I wonder how yellow/orange does it have to be for the seeds to be ripe and able to germinate? Below is the pic of the fruit. To me it seams still green, so can it ripe when cut down from the plant?
