Just send me your address ( PM) and I'll send when ripe. Any seed prep I should do before sending?
Howard
You can send wet, with fruit still on,in sealed baggie. Or scoop out flesh and seed and let dry, out of direct sun , for a few days .Either way is fine with me.

Pretty flowers. We have gotten some of the seed to germinate and hope many more will also. Bug, that got in through a tear in a window screen, got several of the seedlings. Oh well, they need to eat too.

Indeed, I've heard (here?) that there is a hypnotic in the flower that causes them to sleep or doze. I frequently find them asleep in my incarnatas. Both honeybees (the few that are left) and bumble bees love 'em.

Passiflora phoenicia. Ruby Glow most likely. This one is not self fertile.I have been hand pollinating them with another Passion Vine. The honey bees are not large enough to do a good job of pollinating, takes a Carpenter bee to do it.

It seems that this is a year for the critters. Caterpillars, squirrels, rats, ants, you think of it and it is here. Been busy trying to get ahead and may have done so. Even got two cats to help out. The passi vines are getting eaten by butterfly caterpillars. Not only the passis but they completely destroyed a moon flower vine. With the daily rains neem oil is out and most other deterents so I just hand pick them when I can find them. Any suggestions for the control of the caterillars

Thanks Tony, It may be something that I can do to control my pests. It will require may applications since it is the rainy season and like a few minutes ago we got a "gulley washer". We hope that the grass seed stayed in place but whatever we need the rain. If I don't then I can forget getting any fruit. I can grow in an inclosed area but that would mean hand pollinating and not sure if I have that much time to spare. Maybe?

I mixed according too the label instructions . It;s pretty stick stuff so if you can get a few hours without rain I think you'll be good to go.

Tiki, Tony is very generous and has a lot of varities. We were most pleased and surprised with what he sent us. We are looking around here for plants that have ripe fruit but it seems that they might not be real popular since we have a bad caterpillar problem. Going to see if my new friend has any ripe fruit and then I can repay Tony and if you want some let us know. The fruit is p. incarnata which I believe Tony uses for cross pollinating.

Something I didn't know when you first asked about the thin leaves.Cauerlea is not self fertile so something else pollinated the plant. It could have been another caerulea or a different variety. The seed are hybrid you'll have to wait for flowers to know what you have. You can give it the same fert. as you do your bananas. If you get flowers make sure you post picks.Ante got flowers on seedlings from last year so next year maybe you'll get blossoms.

I pollinated my alata with it's own pollen and caerulea.Something worked .I know alata works on phoenicea 'Ruby Glow' but ruby glow does not work on alata. The problem with both these plants is you need to hand pollinate the bees are not large enough to do the job.

Last winter 7 days with frost, even had the water in the garden hose frozen.Messed up a few banana plants but did not hurt the passiflora.I pollinated all alata and ruby glow by hand.Only the large carpenter bees are large enough to pollinate these large flowers and they like caerlea better. One ruby glow I have ,last year only 4 fruit, this year I handpollinated and have more than 60 fruit.

Most Passiflora enthusiast live in the UK. You can do it just need to leave potted and bring indoors for winter

I live in a small house so I have limited room and windows. My dragon fruit plants are going to take up most of the window space. I had brought my Incense indoors last winter and it died on me, though the caerulea seedlings did well by my bedroom lamp.

Are you sure the incarnata died ? They do die to the ground but re-sprout in spring,Incarnata is cold hardy and can take your winter

Both my Incense and my Incarnata died. The incarnata did a strange thing. It died and then sprouted new growth and then died again lol. I pulled it up and it didn't have much of a root system. I tried waiting for both but I gave up on them and threw them both out. The Incense was definitely dead and I had both growing in a container indoors through the winter.

Yes. The Incarnata was given to me from a local person. It grows wild on the side of some highway in Dallas. When he dug it up, it didn't have much of a root system. When I first saw the plants I kind of knew they wouldn't make it but I tried anyways. I wish I could find it around my area. But next year I may look for some plants since it seems so hardy. I wouldn't mind it taking over because I lost so many plants from the drought

The caerulea is pretty cold hardy but you might want to pile some mulch/leaves around it this winter. It may die back but should come back in spring

JaNan,
is true, the Passiflora holosericea, is one, of the subgenus Decaloba, most beautiful and elegant, for the foliage and flowers.
The diameter of the flower is about 4-5 cm.

Tony - I have a couple of questions for you:
Why are you getting rid of Dwf. Cavendish? Is it because of small size of fruit, or taste.
My first bananas (when I didn't know anyting about them) were some Gros Micheles, in about 1972. I kept them in a finished basement, in front of glass sliding doors, When the started pushing the tiles out of
the drop ceiling, I decided we had to get rid of them, We gave them to my wife's boss, who had an indoor pool. When they were in there, they actually fruited
I have limited space here, in New York, so I would like something that I could probably fruit at a reasonable size.
Have you ever seen/ or grown P. quadralangularis, which is supposed to be a couple of pounds.

I am only get rid of some banana varieties because I need the space.I have some bananas that have been in 5gal.pots for 2 years because I do not have anywhere to plant them.I am getting rid of the more common varieties so I can grow the others.I am also going to get rid of my Dragon Fruit plants. I believe I have a Quadrangularis seedling growing now.I wont know till it flowers.Quadrangularis has a beautiful flower, huge fruit but the taste is nothing special. My p.alata has the best fruit of any I've tasted so far,and I can grow it without protection.Quad. is more tropical.

I think it may have been the soil I was using. It was peat/humus but it was mostly peat. I guess I let it dry out too much and the roots couldn't grow in it. I bought some compost/greensand/ lava sand and added a lot of perlite to it. I was wondering if Edulis will grow well in containers? I'm soaking the seeds in some peroxide and warm water and most are very plump already

My experience has been much the same. Got them to germinate and then they died. Was using coco coir and perlite but forgot that there is no nourishment in it. Now I am feeding the sprouts with MG and it seems they are doing somewhat better. Good luck.

Thanks Noah. I'm going to plant them today. Its strange because the first edulis seeds I got to sprout only took a week to germinate but the caerulea took almost 2 months to germinate. I want to look for incarnata next year
We we looking for incarnata for seed also. When it is found Tony will get all he wants and you can have some also. There are 4 plants inside the house now and they will get alot of tlc until they can go back outside under protection from the butterflies. We also have some problems sprotuing but keep plugging away and will get it right. Good luck.

Self fertile, self compatible or self fertilizing ?
I have heard this also.I am not sure will find out next year. These fruit are P.phoenicea which is not self compatible. Okay this is were it gets weird.Phenicea works on alata, alata works on phoeniea, alata is self compatable, phoeniea is not. I was also reading that all the phoenicea in the U.S. are probably hybrids and not pure,

Well, that sounds nearly as complicated as banana cultivar identification. So, what you're saying is that the fruits with "Alata" written on them in the photo are actually P. phoenicea, which is not self whatever. The true alata may or may not be self whatever and may or may not actually exist in the trade in the US. Yes?

The fruit with alata written on it is a phoenicea fruit that was pollenated with alata.I heard that the phoeniceas in the United States are most likely all hybrids and will not self.Alata I am not sure about, next year I will isolated some alata flowers and see if they will self.If it does not that does not mean much either because it may be a hybrid and not true alata. So true alata and true phoenicea should self but finding the true form may be difficult :woohoonaner:

I ordered seed for p. vitifolia, p. amethystina, and p. decaisneana from 'ButterflyWorld' with no problems. If I had ordered a plant, I would have needed an import permit. In the case of seed, since there is no soil involved, it is treated differently.
I have also ordered seed from other Seed Companies on-line, and it also came in with no problems, no permit, and was clearly marked as seeds.

Ebay seller (Please note: No shipping of plants to destinations outside of the U.S., and no shipping of Passiflora plants or seeds to Hawaii.)
Well, I ordered it, it was sent, and there was no problem. Perhaps it is permitted under certain conditions. The seed had no parts of the plant with it, and they looked quite dry. I already know not to attempt to order any P. mollissima since it is considered a pest here. We already have P. suberosa, P. mollissima, P. quadrangularis, P. edulis (yellow and purple) growing here. If you don't wish to, I understand; I'm just saying I've ordered from legitimate companies, and gotten seeds. One company just last week sent me a seed catalogue for another order. (heirloomseeds.com)
Oh, regarding ebay, some folks just don't want to bother sending to Hawaii. Also, I don't buy stuff of ebay anyway. If I wish to order something, I check to see if they say no shipping to Hawaii, or only ship to the continental US, or just to the contiguous states (which excludes Hawaii and Alaska). Some places just don't wish to bother with it since it is easier for them not to do so, not necessarily because it would have been illegal.
I'm not trying to get anyone in hot water, and I don't work for the 'Ag' dept., I'm just trying to grow something besides all the p. suberosa, and p. edulis that is all around my garden.

Thanks to Sunfish, I was able to try a fruit from P. phoenicea. I had lots of P. edulis "Frederick" around from my plant, so I did a side by side comparison. I was surprised at how different they were, in many ways. The flavor was not remotely similar. Frederick basically tastes like anything sold as having passionfruit flavor (e.g., juices). P. phoenicea's taste I really don't even know how to describe, maybe melon-like. Definitely a nice flavor, but hard to describe. It was also sweeter, which isn't saying that much, because my Frederick fruit are almost always pretty sour, but phoenicea was not sour at all. Despite the somewhat larger fruit of P. phoenicea, the actual edible, flavorful part, was less than that of Frederick because of the thick rind of the phoenicea and the large seeds with less pulp.
It's always nice to try something new, especially something like P. phoenicea, which really was nothing like anything I've had before. Thanks Tony.

Agreed. But if all you'd ever eaten was Satsuma mandarins and you didn't realize how different citrus can be and then you had a grapefruit, you'd be surprised! Being clueless about Passiflora fruits, I assumed they'd all have some variation on the flavor you get in commercial passionfruit juice. Boy was I wrong. Same sort of thing as comparing babaco to papayas. They aren't similar at all.

That plant will spread 60'. You can start hanging wire on the ceiling or trim the plant. People who over winter passion vines trim them back every year and let them grow out in spring.
Re-potting is no problem just pull the root-ball out and stick it in a bigger pot.

I think it depends on size more than age. Probably two years. I've read that keeping it root bound will force them to flower

Tony,
Which passion fruit is sweet? I planted mine for shade, and they've surely done their job, growing so fast, beautiful foliage, flowers, and fruits. They're sour eaten out of hand, but tastes awesome when made as juice (some water, sugar). I forgot the name of mine, but the fruits turn dark purple/black and fall to the ground, that's when I eat them (picked off the ground).
Thanks,
sunfish

Wait a week or two longer to eat them, until they are really dark and a bit wrinkled. They will be sweeter.
