I've never tasted any type of passion fruit before, only in fruit juice. The one I have is called Granadilla, that's probably the general name for Edulis? I dont know the variety, so maybe I will have to wait until it flowers

Last year you dug some plants. I think one was Incarnata and maybe Incense ?

Oh, you had to remind me LOL. Both perished during winter. The maypops produced new growth and then died shortly after. When I pulled them up they didnt have roots, so I dont know how there was new growth. The Incense kept losing leaves even in front of a sunny window and my dog kept tearing it, so I moved it outside in my shed during winter and it died. I was so upset about it, but at least I have the Blue Crown and the Edulis that are doing well

OK, you passion flower 'experts', here are some photos of an unknown vine growing near my garden plot. The size is quite small with the blooms hardly the size of a dime, and the fruit smaller than a large pea. I've got another one behind my house that is roughly double the size of this one in the blooms and fruit. That one also has more color, but it is not currently blooming yet.
This is one of the vines

Or Passiflora lutea - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passiflora_lutea)
I looked up the P. lutea, and P. suberosa. It looks just like the P. suberosa, however it doesn't say anything about it being in Hawaii. It seems to be an American species so maybe it hitchhiked to Hawaii? I've never noticed the fruit long enough to know if they turn dark as they ripen, but now I'll pay attention and see what happens.
Much thanks!
Now that I've taken some time to look up a few of the many passiflora types, I've noticed some that are particularly interesting. I've got to make sure I don't introduce another 'invasive' species to the island, though. One I'm particularly interested in is already here though so it shouldn't be a problem. Of the types I'm going to attempt to locate/obtain are: P. arborea, P. macrophylla, P. discophora, P. quadrangularis, and P. vitifolia. One cultivar that was noteworthy was named 'Incense', but I don't know if it is a hybrid or species. P. macrophylla may be an issue since I think we may be too warm here for it to grow well. P. quadrangularis is particularly beautiful, especially the dark ones.

Can anyone tell me how much time does it normally take from sprouting seedlings to flowering for Passiflora incarnata? I sprouted some seedlings 3 months ago and they are now about a foot long now with many extraterrestrial-looking green buds (http://twitpic.com/5lk8kp/full) that look like they're about to bloom open. I didn't think it was going to be this fast or even with the plant being still so short. I don't want them to spend all that energy blooming prematurely and kill them.

That's fast.I have had Edulis Sims fruit the firrst year from seed. The plant was only about 3'.You can pinch off all but a few flowers if you like.Go ahead and let it flower it won't kill it.

My passion buds are pretty swollen... but I now noticed something else: there are small clear sap "beads" at the base of each leaf and flower bud. I don't know what it is since it's my first time growing these, but the insects fly on, drink, and leave. If it's nectar, I thought it would be inside the blooms. I touch it and it sort of clings and stretches kind of like astroglide (sorry, I had no other comparison to use!). Does anyone know for sure what it is? Overwatering? Do I worry too much?

I don't know of anything special I'm doing... soil is the same banana potting mix I used on my potted bananas (1/3 each of peat, compost, and pearlite) and I use a weak dose of miracle grow on them. I did watch youtube demonstrations on pollinating, but feels to me like I'd be molesting them. I bought a brush from the women's beauty section at WalMart to try brushing them. Hey Howard - that looks like a "Lady Margaret" to me. I bought one last year, and it looked like two small plants. I guess I got overly ambitious and greedy and separated them in the heat of summer and then lost them both. I tried serching for this a couple of weeks ago. Every site had a different answer.I know it's not a matter of having male and female flowers on the same plant, there all complete flowers. What matters is if it's self fertile. Some Passion Vines need an other unrelated vine for cross pollination.

If a vine shares a common root, but grows as an individual vine, will the vines be related? The Incarnata that I have along our back fence, seems to mostly share a common root and it produces viable fruit.

I just serched again to find out if Incarnata is self fertile. It looks like it isn't. If you have other plants in your area they may be getting cross pollinated by bees.I have some passion vines that I have to pollinate with a different variety to get fruit.

It is a really good possibility, then, that bees are probably visiting other vines and then stopping by mine. They're doing a good job.

No bloom photos today, but these are my neighbor's Passiflora edulis vines. She planted them about 7 months ago, and they have been growing like weeds. I've seen 3 blooms so I know it is the P. edulis which seems very common around here. The fruit is still bright green, but I think it will be the yellow (var flavicarpa?) when mature. I had no idea these grew so fast.
The fence they are on is 20', and they are reaching for more room.

10 months from seed is doing well.
This is a very aggressive variety of passion vine so it roots easy. The weather here has been just right for sprouting seed and rooting cuttings.

It doesn't have to be another incarnata, if I use another I might not get the same plant. At this time we have 8 plants, all incarnata, but only one with buds. The others should take off shortly. Where I dug these there were no other than incarnata and haven't seen any ones closer than 2 miles. Patience pays.

Tony, your photos aren't too shabby. I've been told that most of the time it is the user and not the camera. With me that is very often a fact. I shake a little so I am now using a monopod to help keep things a little more steady. If that doesn't work out comes the tripod. Todays cameras sure make photography easy and great.

There is no real trick to starting Passiflora seed.I use to think there was. Soak in warm water for 24hr.Sow in fast draining mix, only bury seed a 1/4 or so.Keep soil moist ,not wet. Place in warm spot 70f to 75f is fine.

Good info Tony, do you think that one has to wait? That is the only thing I don't like about sprouting seeds is the wait. All of the info we have gained from you has shown up in the seedlings. It did take awhile though. Thanks

Some seed have a hard seed coat and they will take longer to sprout.Soaking the seed for two or more days, higher temps, or nicking may speed up the process.I've had seed of different varieties sprout in 4 days other varieties 4 months. Also if you are buying or getting seed from someone check to see if they float or sink in water. If their floaters their probably no good.

Tony- I'll have a good harvest of my incarnata fruit. Only thing is, I don't know when to pick. I either do it when they're not ripe, or dried out. Any help?

Tony, nice purple fruits. I've only got a few off my Fredericks so far, but there's another hundred or so green ones on the plant. The nice thing about this variety is they fall off when they're ripe, so you don't have Howard's problem!
Tony, what is the orange fruit in the photo?

I believe Incarnata should be picked when there is start to change color, and come loose from the vine with little effort.Even then you may let them ripen for a couple more days off the vine.
The fruits will grow larger than a hen's egg to near tennis ball size, and when they are ripe, they turn a dull yellow-green color. When mature, the passionfruit will develop the characteristic fragrance, and the skin may become puckered or puffy.

A two hour trip takes a lot out of me. However, in the past month I have been catching up. The temps will drop soon and then I will be able to do more. If I could get off of some of the meds then things would be much happier for me but the quacks say that they are needed. Time will tell. We have traveled Florida from east to west and north to south. It is beautiful with what it offers and the rest of the states also have their beautiful features.
A visit to your place would be fantastic for me. You have so much beauty around you. Might happen, who knows.
Thanks

I've never harvested Incarnata so that info is from the net. If you ever want to trade seed let me know.Incarnata is very interesting so I'm always looking for seed. They will cross pollinate with other varieties.
