I have a 9 foot thai black, it has been black since it was a foot high. I think maybe the seller sold you something else. Looks nice though!

Beautiful banana, but my guess is that its not a Thai Black. My thai black used to be black, but now it has much much less color.

AmberNicole,

It is not a Thai Black, I have some pups on one of my larger ones if you want one. Do you have Ha'a pups? :jalapenonaner:

a nursery by me has three "thai blacks" that are 3- 4 foot tall and all green. they look exactly like my thai black though, stout and tall upright growth. could there be a variation or a possible "green" thai black?

Hmmmmmmm...

That's interesting, I've wondered the same thing. AmberNichole's plant looks like a thai black with those short, upright leaves - but no black.

Here's a pic of one of my pups. It's not a matter of "turning black", they simply are black - or not, in her case. My plant was certainly a TC baby, but was black from the getgo, and the pups come out of the ground black too.

Man, mine isn't black either! I bought mine off of eBay. I was just waiting for it to turn black. Sad to learn that it won't be turning any time soon. I guess I've got a Thai Green...or something else entirely. Drat!

I got mine from sandy and it was about a foot tall when I got it and was already black. I got it in march now it is 7 foot tall in a pot and still black. It is one of my favorites.

My old Black Thai did not survive the winter, but I bought a new one. It wasn't all that black either, but is turning more black all the time.

I think they turn black as they get larger UNLESS they are pups, then they are black immediately. If anyone has a picture of a small, very black pseudostem on a Black Thai that is not a pup (but TC or seed grown) I'd like to see it.

Could the PH level be an issue? Maybe they like a lower PH?

Agri-Starts TC's

Maybe it has more to do with light? When I bought mine I got it at a nursery that had just had a new owner. Almost every tag in the entire nursery was missing. I suspected that maybe it was either a bank foreclosure or maybe something else that caused the original owner to go through and methodically remove almost every tag in the place. Well, a few of their 'Thai Black' had tags, but looked dead or close to it. The one I got wasn't labled but looked the healthiest and the pseudostems looked the same as the ones that were labled. They were in pint pots and I think I payed $7.50 which was cheaper than the one I got off of eBay and it wasn't so black either and never even grew to the size of the one I have now even thought I had it in the ground all summer. They had Agri-starts tags on them. Mine is doing well now and is growing in full sun. The amount of black is definitely increasing.
