"The word Halloween is first attested in the 16th century and represents a Scottish variant of the fuller All-Hallows-Even ("evening"), or All-Hallows-Eve, that is, the night before All Hallows Day. Up through the early 20th century, the spelling "Hallowe'en" was frequently used, eliding the "v" and shortening the word. Although the phrase All Hallows is found in Old English (ealra hálȝena mæssedæȝ, the feast of all saints), All-Hallows-Even is itself not attested until 1556".

HAPPY ~ HALLOWEEN!!!

"Halloween, celebrated each year on October 31, is a mix of ancient Celtic practices, Catholic and Roman religious rituals and European folk traditions that blended together over time to create the holiday we know today. Straddling the line between fall and winter, plenty and paucity and life and death, Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. Halloween has long been thought of as a day when the dead can return to the earth, and ancient Celts would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off these roaming ghosts. The Celtic holiday of Samhain, the Catholic Hallowmas period of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day and the Roman festival of Feralia all influenced the modern holiday of Halloween. In the 19th century, Halloween began to lose its religious connotation, becoming a more secular community-based children's holiday. Although the superstitions and beliefs surrounding Halloween may have evolved over the years, as the days grow shorter and the nights get colder, people can still look forward to parades, costumes and sweet treats to usher in the winter season".

So, what are your plans for Halloween?

There's usually a big Halloween Bash every year here so I might attend...although last year's Halloween party was a disaster with tons of drunken fights and police calls. Hoping this year might be better...

Let us know your plans...or anything else you'd like to share about Halloween. Images too...

HALLOWEEN SUPERSTITIONS:

~ A burning a candle inside a jack-o-lantern on Halloween keeps evil spirits and demons at bay.

~ If a candle suddenly goes out by itself on Halloween, as though by breath or wind, it is believed that a ghost has come to call.

~ Always burn new candles on Halloween to ensure the best of luck. It is not a good idea to burn Halloween candles at any other time of the year. It may bring bad luck or strange things will happen to you, over which you will have no control.
Gazing into a flame of a candle on Halloween night will enable you to peer into the future.

~ Girls who carry a lamp to a spring of water on this night can see their future husband in the reflection.

~ It is believed that if a person lights a new orange colored candle at midnight on Halloween and lets it burn until sunrise, he or she will be the recipient of good luck.

~ If you hear footsteps trailing close behind you on Halloween night, do not to turn around to see who it is, for it may be Death himself! To look Death in the eye, according to ancient folklore, is a sure way to hasten your own demise.

~ The old Celtic custom was to light great bonfires on Halloween, and after these had burned out to make a circle of the ashes of each fire. Within this circle, and near the circumference, each member of the various families that had helped to make a fire would place a pebble. If, on the next day, any stone was displaced, or had been damaged, it was considered to be an indication that the one to whom the stone belonged would die within twelve months.

~ According to an old English folk belief, you will invite bad luck into your home if you allow a fire to burnout on Halloween. To remedy the situation, the fire must be rekindled by a lighted sod brought from the home of a priest.

~ If a bat flies around a house three times, it is considered to be a death omen.

~ A person born on Halloween can both see and talk to spirits.

~ Knocking on wood keeps bad luck away.

~ If you see a spider on Halloween, it could be the spirit of a dead loved one who is watching you.

~ Put your clothes on inside out and walk backwards on Halloween night to meet a witch.

~ You should walk around your home three times backwards and counterclockwise before sunset on Halloween to ward off evil spirits.

~ In Britain, people believed that the Devil was a nut-gatherer. At Halloween, nuts were used as magic charms.

Halloween is my favorite holiday! :witchnaner:

These are pictures I took when we (Greg and I) were walking around a cemetery at night. I did not "see" anything but for some reason something had made me turn my head to the right and I thought I am going to take a picture. I walked a few steps and took another one. (you can see they are the same headstones) I thought they turned out pretty good. I must say if I had seen these I would not have hung around to take more pictures! HA! HA!

<img src = "http://home.flash.net/~jeanann/P7100266.JPG">

Here are a couple that I posted here last year I think. This was the same night further into the cemetery.

Greg was antagonizing as usual! This is very large - about 7 1/2 feet I'm guessing. The EMF detector that Greg is holding in his hand started blinking very fast which triggered me taking the picture.

Witty Halloween one liners...

What do you get when you cross a vampire and a snowman?
Frostbite...

How do witches keep their hair in place while flying?
With scare spray...

Why don't skeletons ever go out on the town?
Because they don't have any body to go out with...

What do ghosts add to their morning cereal?
Booberries...

What is a vampire's favorite sport?
Casketball...

What is a vampire's favorite mode of transportation?
A blood vessel...

Ok yes, I know those were even worse! :ha:

Someone in another Halloween thread on another site, asked me what my best and favorite Halloween costume was and I replied...

I think my best costume was...

One year I dressed as Rapunzel because I've got long blonde hair to my waist. The gown was especially gorgeous though because I rented it and I had my hair done in long ringlets at the hairdressers...I felt like a Princess. :ha:

The top 15 complaints of the modern day vampire

* Grunge look makes it tough to tell living from the undead.
* Nutrasweet or not, fat-free blood tastes like crap.
* Hard to get a decent puncture with latex on your fangs.
* Three Words: Daylight Savings Time
* Thanks to all those Marilyn Manson fans, we just aren't taken seriously any more.
* After 45 years of Communist rule, it's impossible to find clean, uncontaminated Transylvanian soil for bottom of coffin.
* After 100 years of trying, still can't score with Elvira.
* No bat is safe with Ozzy Ozbourne around.
* With all those crucifix-wearing Madonna clones, junior highs are suddenly off-limits.
* No warm blood for miles around DC.
* Exhausted from all those Calvin Klein photo shoots.
* Sick and tired of being mistaken for Keith Richards
* Buxom wenches of old have been replaced by aerobicized "hardbodies."
* Baboon heart makes everything taste gamey.
And the number 1 complaint of Modern-day Vampires:
* No small task beating F. Lee Bailey to a warm body

Ok yes, I know those were really corny!

I actually do have a shot of me as Rapunzel but it's on a negative, as I mailed the originals to my grandmother. My dress was a shimmery pink and blue with sparkles on the bodice. It was just so feminine & beautiful.

If I get them developed again, I'll be sure to scan and post.

Pumpkin soup!

1 small cooking pumpkin
1 can sweet coconut
can evaporated milk
1 tbsp curry powder
butter
salt

Cut pumpkin in half and clean out seeds, save seeds to toast or grow more pumpkins.
Smooth butter on both halves of pumpkin and sprinkle with salt.
Roast pumpkin halves in 350 degree oven for 1 1/2 hours or till soft.
Let pumpkin cool slightly, then place in blender, add coconut milk, evaporated milk and curry powder.
Blend mixture till smooth, enjoy!

best served warm although I like it cold as well. I sprinkled toasted pumpkin seeds on top
of the soup as a crunchy garnish. This works well with butternut squash too!

Jack-o-Lantern

Jack-o-lantern, Jack-o-lantern,
You are such a funny sight.
As you sit there by the window,
Looking out into the night.
You were once a sturdy pumpkin,
growing on a curly vine.
Now you are a Jack-o-lantern,
See your night lights shine.

Five little pumpkins

Sitting on a gate.
The first one said,
"Oh, my it's getting late!"
The second one said,
"There are witches in the air!"
The third one said,
"Well, I don't care!"
The fourth one said,
"Let's run and run and run!"
The fifth one said,
"I'm ready for some fun!"
Ooooo went the wind
And out went the lights
And the five little pumpkins
Rolled out of sight.

We bought a fat orange pumpkin
The plumpest sort they sell.
We neatly scooped the inside out
And only left the shell.
We carved a funny funny-face
Of silly shape and size,
A pointy nose, a jagged mouth
And two enormous eyes.
We set it in a window
And we put a candle in,
Then lit it up for all to see
Our jack-o'lantern grin.

The jack -o'lantern chuckled
Then winked his funny eye,
"I would rather be a pumpkin-face
Than be inside a pie!"
Jolly wolly pumpkin face
You're happy tell us why.
I'd rather be a pumpkin face
And not a pumpkin pie!

Easy Pumpkin Pie Recipe

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/halloween56.jpg

The hardest part about making pumpkin pie is getting the crust right. With this easy pumpkin pie recipe, you don't have to worry about that, because it starts with a frozen pie crust. Crushed pecans and graham crackers provide a barrier to keep the pie crust from getting soggy. To make this easy pumpkin pie a tad healthier, use a whole wheat frozen pie crust. You can find them in specialty grocery stores.
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 1 hour, 5 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour, 15 minutesIngredients:
•1 9-inch frozen pie crust, thawed according to package directions
•1/2 cup crushed graham crackers
•1/2 cup finely chopped pecans
•2 large eggs
•1 15 oz. can pumpkin puree (unsweetened, not pumpkin pie mix)
•3/4 cup sugar
•1 12 oz. can evaporated milk (skim is okay)
•1 tsp. cinnamon
•1/2 tsp. kosher salt
•1/2 tsp. nutmeg
•1/2 tsp. ground cloves
•whipped cream, for garnish

Preparation:

1.Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.

2.Mix graham cracker crumbs and chopped pecans. Press into bottom and up the sides of thawed pie crust, forming a thin layer on top of the pie crust.

3.Whisk the eggs in a large bowl. Add the remaining ingredients. Pour into prepared crust.

4.Bake 15 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350 degrees F. Bake another 35-50 minutes, until a knife inserted one inch from the edge comes out mostly clean. The center of the pie will still look wet and be jiggly.

5.Cool completely (2-3 hours) before serving. Top with whipped cream, if desired.

Caramel Apples...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/halloween61.jpg

12 apples (plus 12 popsicle sticks)
4 14-ounce packages of caramels
8 tablespoons heavy cream
crushed nuts

Rinse apples, pat dry, and remove apple stems and insert a popsicle stick into stem of each apple. Combine the cream and caramels in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly until caramel is melted and smooth. Dip the apples into the caramel until completely covered. Let the extra caramel drip back into the saucepan. Roll in crushed nuts.
Line a baking sheet with waxed paper. Place apples upside down on waxed paper and refrigerate.

MY HALLOWEEN DECORATIONS:

Here's a cool Jack-o-Lantern I bought a couple years back, that's made of spongey styrofoam material, and it has a light in it that plugs into the wall. Here is was last night lit up, so you can see it...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSCI3922.jpg

I love it that I never have to bother with messy candles or worry about fire. I keep it lit in my window all throughout October. Here it is in the daytime so you can see how real it kinda looks...

Yes, Great decorations! I really like that lit jack o'lantern, Sherry. It does look real even in daylight.

Here are my front porch decorations in three different camera lighting situations:

This was taken with a flash - the bat has purple lights with flashing green eyes though it didn't photograph that way.
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=37697&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=37697)

This one is without flash, my camera doesn't take very good pictures at night.
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=37699&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=37699)

This is some other setting on my camera, I don't remember which one but I thought it looked pretty neat.
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=37698&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=37698)

I don't like having to fret with candles either but I love the lights!

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=37886&size=1

Day Before Halloween

Twas the day before Halloween and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring except some witch in a hat.
Her stockings were hung by the chimney... NO! WRONG!
So I grabbed the fire extinguisher and hid her bong!
Well, everyone else was Nestle Kwik'd or bombed outa their heads
while these weird wind-up spiders danced over their beds.
And mom in a stupor and dad in a rant
called Animal Control, screaming something about bats!
When out in the yard there was such a weird clatter
I sprang from the sofa to see who got hammered!
Over toys and a downed bar stool I flew like a shot [Huh!?]
and opened the patio doors while dad called the cops.
And yeah, the moon made sparkles all over the snow...
Snow!? I must be bombed! We dont get snow in October!
Anyway, what to my "wtf!?" eyes should appear!?
[well, it def wasn't a Lamborghini or Brooklyn Decker!]
Brief Intermission

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=37884&size=1

A truck full of zombies & weapons, 2 guyz & 2 girlz!

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=37885&size=1

Well, that guy Tallahassee was so lively and kwik
Everyone dressed as a zombie was screaming "holy s**t!"
[a moment of silence for Bill Murray]
More rapid than snails, zombies swarmed all over the house
and Columbus actually shot one that was biting a mouse!
But while I tried to explain about discharging firearms in city limits
An animal activist grabbed a sack with a trophy in it.
And with each new explosion the house was filling up with ghosts
harassing the zombies and spraying everyone with cokes!
But then in a twinkling [a what!?], I heard on the roof
the prancing & pawing of each heavy boot!
While dad googled "roofers" and Krista grabbed another round,
down the chimney came the swat team with a major bound!
They were dressed up in body armor from their heads to their toes
and looked like a pack of really nasty Iron Man clones!
Well, their eyes didn't twinkle and their dimples weren't exactly merry
and their cheeks [lol!] weren't like roses... did someone say "cherry"? lmao!
Well, their drooling little mouths were def drawn up like bows
when Brooklyn Decker stepped in outa the snow!
Well, we wont go into what was clenched tightly in their teeth [def not pipes, lol!]
But those ghosts were def circling their heads like wreaths!
When onto the roof flew the weirdest new sight,
Harry Potter on the hypogriff holding a large bag really tight!
He dropped down the chimney and opened his sack
and grinned while the house filled up with vampire bats!
While mom googled "exterminators" up the chimney he went
zapping zombies with a magical pipe wrench
[Hey! It worked, lol! :o]
Well, he sprang to the hypogriff and gave a loud whistle
and away he flew with the bats, ghosts, and Krista!
[Columbus is def not happy, lol!]
But I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight,
"Happy Halloween!" and "I'll be back when you guyz learn to write."

Oooooooh. :o Well, an "E" for Effort? :o LOL!

The Hollyberry Lady
10-28-2010, 01:16 AM
