Hi There, after I bought a Gros Michel from Thailand plants I asked him if he has for sale the Viente Cohol cultivar too that in Thai language is " Kluai Hom Thong Son" and that's his reply:

Hi Rick,

I will have "Kluai Hom Thong Son" for sale in the next week. Please let me know amount that you need.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you.

Best regards,
Surachart

With Dalmatiansoap we were discussing about the right thai name since its very similar to the Gros Michel name so I made it clear to Surachart that I was interested in the Veinte Cohol (since I've already bought the Gros Michel from him).

I'm sure that many of european members will be pleased to know that now we have a way to get the Veinte cohol....

Bye

Hi Rick,

I would definitly want one, if we could verify that it is the same cultivar. "Same, same but different" is something I often heard in Thailand :08:

We could order togehter and one of us just needs to resend them to the others. This might safe shipping costs. If this is no option for you guys or too expensive, because resending them could be also more expensive, we could at least ask for a discount, even they're shipped seperately to each of us.

Hi, I asked him to verify that is exactly the Veinte Cohol (I sent him a couple of links about it) .... I think he is a serious seller .

I think that a compined shipping of a number of plants to reduce shipping costs would be effective only for people living in the same country....
For example , to ship a plant to Germany from Italy it would costs between 18€ and 26€ by express courier .

If there is a number of members willing to buy one Veinte Cohol it would be a great idea to ask for a discount....
We could place a "bananas.org" group order.

Count on me for the collective order.

Is that an invitation? :ha:

Sure it would be nice. But this order would come to a very hostile, winter like temps in a week or so. That's what bothers me actually.

I've set up a greenhouse to overwinter the Gros Michel and possibly the Veinte Cohol....... in my office :2738::woohoonaner:

I've managed to let my boss believe that the red and blu lights help me to see better contrasts on the monitor......:ha:

Hi Rick,

great idea with the greenhouse! I'm also thinking of getting something similar for the balcony for the winter.
Back then, when I was living in Germany, I had also big palm tree in pot which didn't fit any more in my appartment and I also moved it to my office. In winter it was standing in front of my desk and it was like working in jungle. In summer the palm was on the balcony of the office. My boss had no problems at all. We then moved the palm (Trachycarpus) to Greece with the moving truck and planted it to the ground, but it wasn't watered properly, so it died soon after...

But coming back to the Veinte Cohol from Thailand. I checked their homepage and the good thing is, that the price includes a phytosanitary certificate, so customs shouldn't be problem. Did you ask for the price, because it's not yet listed on the homepage? Shipping is also not very expensive, but I'm a bit affraid of the long delievery. I wonder how much express shipping would be?

I also found a good document, which provides translation of cultivar names from the S/E-Asian languages to the international names: http://kukr.lib.ku.ac.th/Fulltext_kukr/KU0222075c.pdf

We, younger cultures (<1500 years), don't really go for that kind of stuff. But it's a matter of another 1000+ years that we learn the proper way of the masters. :ha:

Do you have any news from Thailand? I checked yesterday on the website and it wasn't there. Are they listing this variety on the site or are just getting some pups and sell them on request only?

Hi, no news yet but I think that they got a small quantity of pups just because I asked for them.... if they sell them all I'm sure they'll put the Veinte Cohol in catalogue....

Today or tomorrow they should contact me about the Gros Miche shipping and I'll aske them news about the V.C and then I'll lett you know ASAP.

Too much for me..... I'll take my chance with the regular postal service...:2722:

Anyway, I wonder how it's possible that in 2010 , does it takes 3 weeks to deliver a package from anywhere in the world.... does Thai postal service use water buffalos as carriers ?????:2118:

Dalmatiansoap

No need for paying extra money on EMS. It will be dormant and cut to corm anyway.

does Thai postal service use water buffalos as carriers ?????:2118:

If parcels travel by air and not with high priority they spend a lot of days waiting for a cheap spot in an airplane which is not fully loaded. That's why prices and delievery times are so different. But if it travels by sea...., but that may be the cheapeast option, but not for nanners.

I have the impression that the Greek Postal Service is carrying parcels with mules - in 2010! It takes ages to get something delivered and the prices are 2 - 3 times higher for sending a parcel from Greece than sending one to Greece. (compared with german prices).

Anyway, I like to spend 30 US$ more, than loose 60 on the whole plant. And I don't have any experience with Thai Postal Service.

My Gros Michel took about 20 days to get its Phytosanitary certificate, so I expect the Veinte Cohol to be shipped the next week....

Actually I've lost tracks of the G.M's shipping... last update on Thai Postal Service's website is on October the 21st.... I hope that the water buffalo carrier didn't eat the corm!:2118:

I'm seriously re-thinking about upgrading to EMS....:2722:

Mine is also stuck at customs. Usually Greek Postal Service (same in Germany) is doing all the work and you pay any duties & taxes at the delievery guy. Unless there's something special...
But in my case I didn't need to show up at customs or send anything. According to the tracking system my VC just spend one week in customs, but I see some progress and it might be out of customs now. I'll let you know as soon as I got news.

Maybe all packages are inspected more intensive due to the recent events.

For rotting bulbs the best are preparations which contain grapefruit seeds extract (In Poland this substance is registered as "Grevit 200SL")or just check which preparations damage
Botrytis cinerea
Erwinia
Alternaria
Sclerotinia scleratiorum
You can also use fungicide with has /copper (II) oxychloride/

After cutting anything off the bulb, it is good to sprinkle the wound with powdered charcoal.

but ..... my nuclear collegues (yes those that have four arms and a green halo around their body) told me that they have seen some of the most beautiful girls in Europe, so, I think I'll put aside my ethical and ecological principles very very soon and ask to join the nuclear branch of Enel and go to Slovakia!!!! :woohoonaner:

Yeah.... It's not that close to me. 120 clicks. And the other one's another 100 clicks in the other direction. That was a good investment, ay? Thanks to our government's corruption Enel got it for mere 1/50th of the real price. About the girls... yeah. They are beautiful, but I'm being told they were much more beautiful 20 years ago, when they were spending more time outside and less time eating/in front of the computer. But 'cause I've lived here since I was born, I take it as standard. :ha:

Italian girls are beautiful too. Those beach-bound I mean (of course the most beautiful pack I saw in Italy was actually a group of Russian women). Dunno about the continental ladies, never saw one. :ha::ha::ha:
But those faces are sooooo different. ;)

I would write a complaint...

Nah, in Italy, only those beach-bound, brown skinned, nicely tanned girls.

Once, when an Employment agency annoyed me I wrote 3 complaints about them - the last one I sent to our province Voivode.:ha:

It doesn't help me but just gave a sign that something is going wrong.

Funny video, Swedish girls are beautiful indeed, I sow it with my own eyes. ;)
(There is 170 km between Poland and Sweden)
And next year I think I would go to Sweden by ferry (there are nice parties on them)

Leaving apart the economic part that I don't know....
I'm against nuclear plants, but the worst thing about your situation, to me, is that it's unacceptable to have such a dangerous asset like a nuclear plant in your country owned by a foreign corporation that will advantage another country retaining in Slovakia only the associated risks...
In my humble opinion , the only ones who should own and/or decide about a strategic and potentially dangerous asset in a country should be their own citizens only.

If I'll get a phone call from my boss in the next ten minutes I'll deny everthing I wrote ....:2738::08:

Yeah, the worse part actually is, that in order to cover the rising prices of energy in Italy, Enel distributes these higher prices among other nations exempting Italian pockets from price rising in Italy. That's an excellent move by the Italian government and somebody from our government will likely in the future pay a high price for this sort of betrayal. (needless to say that average Italian salary is like 25x bigger than what most people earn here)

Anyways. What do you have agains nuclear energy? I believe it's much more advanced, acceptable... than any other energy generation known today. I would even go as far as say that it's the most effective green energy out there. ;)

-It's dangerous.... and in italian hands it's even more dangerous because usually the contract to build the plant will be won by the company who will bribe and corrupt the most , not the best... with a possible crumble as it has happened for many public buildings in Abruzzo during the earthquake.

-Italy is almost completely an eartquake prone country except from Sardinia... and not lightly but many places (where our genius would build a nuclear plant) are marked purple (purple is the most dangerous in the instability colour chart)

-It's not worth the billions of Euros compared to the power our plants will produce after (at least) 20 years... The 7 planned nuclear plants will produce 6% of Italian electricity demand after 20 years of costruction ... is it wort to spend untold billions to get that misery after 20 years ?

-Where do we put nuclear waste ? Non here would accept to have them stocked near his home for obvious reasons and it would be a crime to corrupt a 3rd world country to stock them for us.

-the fissile raw material is property of 4-5 countries that are not exactly stable and democratics... we are fighting to break our dependency from fossile energy justo to fall into dependency from uranium....

-The Uranium stock would last approx. 50-60 years at the current rate of extraction, but China and India are growing very fast and will ask for more energy (from nuclear too) very very soon at high rate, so the uranium's stock will be depleted faster and what after ?

I could go on about my contrariety against nuclear and the many reasons I would heavily switch to renewable powers (solar, aeolic, hydro, geotheric and biomass) but it would take me a lot of time to explain.....

That's why I changed my work here in Enel and I applied for renewable powers... I strongly believe in them especially after a read many enel's documents that people outside will hardly if ever know.

Linda, from what I've read on this forum, Namwah Pearl has a very low chance of surviving in general, it gets worse if it is in unsuitable climate.
I agree with Rick that some other variegated naners would be maybe better in your case.

I know. I think the best variegated musa for me would be Ta Nee variegated. It`s said to be the "hardiest" of all variegated musas. I know a German guy who owns one. So I need something else for a future swap. Do you get the point? :ha:

The saddest thing is that they are taking too much advantage over European or North americans buyers, because almost every kind of nana in S.E.Asia is so common that is almost infesting and they make it pay you as if it's the last nana on the Earth....
I saw with my own eyes in Indonesia , Malesia and Philippines that there are more banans than inhabitants and especially the cultivar we in Europe consider uncommon, there, is so common like weed.

I hate to pay 40 $ for a nana I can buy loccally for 1$ but there's no solution except to sacrifice myself and go there in person.....

The worst thing is that now will be more difficult to have another corm from Thailand due to restrictions to Phytosanitary certificate.
