Good night Sherry LOL
The Hollyberry Lady
03-22-2011, 01:28 AM
Too funny. Ok I'm outta here...
: )
[B]Yup, and I have the purple/red variety...it's stunningly gorgeous, Cam! :08:
You realize though that castor bean is poisonous? Even the seeds...so don't eat them! :ha:
...
They grow super fast too. :)
Yup, Castor beans are the source of a poison called ricin. Pretty bad stuff. I don't know all the colors they come in, but over here Castor plants are weeds. They come in green or dark maroon. I noticed this called the insomnia thread - because of my time zone (and my work hours), I probably stay up later than any of the rest of you folks. Well, good night all.
The Hollyberry Lady
03-22-2011, 12:21 PM
Yes Yug, I was told they were weeds in other areas of the world. :ha:
Here though, they are gorgeous specimens that people grow in the middle of their front lawn...with children playing around them!
Feel free to pop in a chat anytime and thanks for the post. ;)

I sure hope garlic isn't bad for bananas. It sure is growing well in the banana container. It is now about 4 or 5 inches tall. It is growing very fast.
The Hollyberry Lady
03-22-2011, 08:23 PM
The garlic should be fine with the banana plant, especially if the container is large. I grew garlic in a pot once too...indoors!
Good luck with it, Tom. ;)

The Hollyberry Lady

It's only because I don't show shots of the brown dead ugly stuff! :ha:
I have failures too Tom...don't think I don't. ;)
I gotta go for a bit - my girlfriends popped in. Chat soon...

You are the green goddess. Is there anything you haven't grown and grown well?
... and would admit to. :lurk:
The Hollyberry Lady
03-23-2011, 02:30 AM
The truth is that when plants die on me now...I usually always know why. Like Yug says though, nothing specific I'd admit to! :ha:
It's pretty late now but the girls popped over unexpectedly...I bet everyone's sleeping now. I should be too...

Yes, I'm here Sherry!
:woohoonaner: Like I said before, only you could get a Thanksgiving cactus to bloom in March! YAY!
I saw the buds on your Hot Marble Pepper! I am so excited for you! :goteam:
~JaNan
The Hollyberry Lady
03-23-2011, 05:29 PM
I am shocked that the buds appeared so quickly! :08: I can't wait to see some fruits. Things are getting very interesting now. You're only a little bit behind me so you should have fruits soon too. ;) So exciting. :goteam:
Things are sure getting huge for you now JaNan. I've got a "fish" pepper sprouting right now also but I've taken a lot of the other sprouts out now...peppers, lettuces, and geraniums.
I think you asked me something in the thread about your pepper sprouts but I forgot to answer. I'll check now...
: )
Jananas Bananas
03-23-2011, 05:51 PM
Yes, but I took mine out of the AeroGarden, so it will be slower than yours getting used to the root environment.
It is exciting! I want you to be so happy with them. I know you LOVE your peppers and I want this one to be one of your favorites!!!!!
Well, I tell you those cherry tomatoes grew very quickly! They are already nearly the size of the starter plants I bought at Lowe's a couple of weeks ago. They will probably slow down now though because I put them in starter soil.
Is "Fish" the variegated one? Be sure and take lots of pictures for me. I love variegated plants. I have some "Jigsaw" dwarf variegated seeds started but nothing yet. I need to start a few in the AG! :) ~J
The Hollyberry Lady
03-23-2011, 06:18 PM
I really am loving the marble plant already...even without fruits! It's just such a cute little plant and I like it that it's a dwarf. I can't wait to see the first little marbles develop.
Yes, the fish pepper is the variegated kind, but I gotta check to see if in fact you did send me the 'jigsaw' type as well...it sounds so nice when I googled it. Have you actually grown it yet?
Upon checking my supplies JaNan, I see that you did in fact send me the jigsaw variety...and I already have a seed sown in the aero-garden! :ha:
Now I'm really excited! :goteam:
Do you have any 'fish' seeds JaNan?
: )
Jananas Bananas
03-23-2011, 06:40 PM
Oh good! I thought I had sent you Jigsaw, so I thought I was loosing it. Yes, those seeds are from my plants, so I hope they are "true". It is a dwarf as well and the leaves are tri-color (purple, white, and green). I may have an old picture of it around here somewhere on another computer. I'll try and find it later for you.
No, I have never tried "Fish". Is it a dwarf also or a full size?
Willow87
03-23-2011, 06:47 PM
Hi Sherry and Janan! Wow that Thanksgiving cactus is beautiful
Jananas Bananas
03-23-2011, 06:55 PM
Hi Cameron! How are your seeds doing? Anything popping? Your lotus that were swelling, and your lemon seeds, oh and any Texas Mountain Laurel? Or any thing else that you are working on? ~J
The Hollyberry Lady
03-23-2011, 06:56 PM
I can send you some 'fish' pepper seeds JaNan...it's an heirloom. It's a full size plant yes, but it tends to trail a bit in a pot and it gets more wide than it does tall. I grew one a couple years ago that was so white it was unbelievable. When the fruits turned red, against the white leaves, it was gorgeous!
Sorry about that JaNan...I didn't think you had sent me the jigsaw. So glad you did. As soon as I discovered I had some I popped one into the aero-garden! :ha: It sounds so pretty and exciting. Are the fruits good?
Yes Cam, the cactus sure is cool...blooming in spring. I can't wait for the Easter cactus to develop buds! :08:

Nothing has come up yet but the lotus is growing 3 new leaves and the first leaf is just now opening
Jananas Bananas
03-23-2011, 07:12 PM
Take pictures for us Cameron! You know we love pictures! :)
Sherry, I honestly don't know about the taste of the fruits. I had it while Greg was overseas, and he is my pepper taster. He will let me know if it is too hot or not - he has an iron stomach, I do not! :) :2126: By the time he was home all I had left was the seeds that I had saved. It did not produce abundantly for me so I only had a few saved. And it did not like the hot Texas summer, even though I kept in in the shady back yard. BUT, it has been one of my favorite peppers because of the beauty of the plant. I hope I can get it started again and it will probably stay in the house with me over summer if I can.
~J

03-23-2011, 07:19 PM
Oh Cameron, tell your Mom that East Texas is gorgeous right now. Greg and I went to Louisiana this past weekend and drove through Palestine. The dogwoods were all blooming, wisteria, and redbud. It was spectacular! And I did not take a single darned picture. I know everything will be finished by the time I get back through there, but it was sooooo pretty.
Willow87
03-23-2011, 07:29 PM
Oh wow Janan. I've always wanted to see the dogwood forests there in Palestine. I have an aunt that lives there but I always go down there at the wrong time.
The Hollyberry Lady
03-23-2011, 07:46 PM
JaNan, are you talking about the "Jigsaw" pepper...it's your favorite?
So you don't actually eat hot peppers then? A lot of people grow them for the ornamental beauty as well. I love them for their beauty and I enjoy eating them as well.
They are somewhat of an addiction really, and I've built up a tolerance to them, and can stand more and more heat. I don't like them ridiculously hot though...like bhut jolokia. They're a little overdone for my taste, but others really love them.
Long red Cayenne is one of my favorites for heat and flavor, but Aurora is my most favorite of all. I should have grown an Aurora in my aero-garden and will next time.
: )
Jananas Bananas
03-23-2011, 08:46 PM
Yes the Jigsaw is my second favorite. Marble is number one and Black Pearl is third.
I do eat peppers, yes - but they have to be on the milder side. I can eat jalapeņos if they are milder - (I love them stuffed with cheese and bacon wrapped - all the seeds taken out :ha:). I am not a super hot pepper eater though. I like pickled peppers A LOT! :)
Oh and Cameron, the azaleas! I forgot to mention them! Does your Mom miss East Texas? I do, especially in the Spring! ~J

My mom really wants to visit my aunt again. We havent seen her in several years now. I would love to see how Palestine looks in spring
The Hollyberry Lady
03-23-2011, 10:35 PM
I will let you know when the one Jigsaw seed pops, JaNan. I like your list of your favorites and can see why you love the black pearl and the marble. I'm loving the marble even without fruits present and can only imagine when there are some!
Good news!!! :woohoonaner:
I got some of the Amythest Beautyberry seeds to pop in my aero-garden!!! They're actually coming up tonight! I am too excited about it and now I can share the seeds because I know they are super viable. They took awhile in the aero-garden so they'll take even longer in soil...about a month or a little more in soil. Still though, it's so cool they're coming up.
You want some, Cam? :waving:
I'm now hopeful that the Purple Pitcher Plant seeds might sprout after all too. I will just die if one does! You think I'm excited over the beautyberry seeds? you ain't seen nothing yet! :goteam:
So I hope everyone sleeps well and has a good Thursday tomorrow.

Wow, congrats on your crown of thorns plant blooming Blake...and on your new plants! :08: They look great. Love the burro's tail...I have it too, as well as the baby type called "burrito". Good luck with your stuff.
I really like that Wisteria, Cam. Gorgoeus, and I bet it smells great! Your Nelumbo is coming along also. :D
I am so excited because I just got some Sundew seeds to sprout in my aero-garden!!! :goteam: I've always wanted to grow one and now I am!
Hope everybody's enjoying their Friday. :waving:

Thanks Sherry. I planted the wisteria for my mom for mothers day several years ago. I'm going to try and get some cuttings from it so I can grow it in other parts of the yard. I love sundew plants
The Hollyberry Lady
03-25-2011, 12:59 PM
They sprouted within 11 days of being in the aero-garden, Cam!
I have Drosera Capensis and Drosera Capensis Alba. Too cool to be growing them. Wonder If JaNan knows or saw the post. Not like anyone knows when the heck she's logged on! http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo1.gif
So how are things going anyway, people? :bananas_b
I sowed some Gaultheria Procumbens seeds in the A-G late last night...they're the Winterberry evergreen dwarf shrublet. I know they'll sprout, just like the Beautyberry seeds. :D I'm so tickled though, with how much faster things come up in the A-G. Those Sundew seeds likely would have taken 4 weeks or more outside the A-G!
: )
Willow87
03-25-2011, 01:07 PM
Wow Congratulations! I think my redbud seeds are sprouting, its too early to tell but i think I see a little green stem
The Hollyberry Lady
03-25-2011, 02:21 PM
Thanks Cam...congrats on your redbud too! ;)
I was just hovering over the aero-garden, gawking at the sundew sprouts again. :ha: I wish they were big enough to show. They're just ridiculously small and the shot I posted in the A-G thread last night was very blurry.
One of the Purple Pitcher Plant seeds looks very fat & swollen and I'm hoping to get a sprout from one very soon. How cool would that be?! :08:
I think now that these sundew seeds have popped for me, I have developed a new obsession this season...for carnivorous plants! :goteam:
I also sowed some venus flytrap seeds, so we'll see if they come up...

I'm just gonna post a couple shots of these wonderful hot pepper seedlings I've got going, in the hot pepper-a-holic thread. One type is called "Little Blue" and other is "Black Pearl". They are so pretty the Little Blue plant has buds on it already! Yippeeeeee!!! :08:

Wow Linda, I'm so sorry to hear that yours didnt make it. Now I'm worried about mine. Its been taking a long time for the leaves to open and one still hasnt developed roots. Sherry those have such beautiful leaves. i love peppers
The Hollyberry Lady
03-25-2011, 05:45 PM
In regards to Nelumbo...
It's quite normal that these plants go dormant, especially when the water temperature is too cold. Although they're perennial, they can sometimes be late getting started in the Spring until the water really heats up. Just when gardeners think their Nelumber tubers have kicked the bucket over the winter, in mid-may sprouts appear. :goteam:
I think the water is too cold Cam & Linda, and the plants don't like it so they are dying back until things warm up. Likely deciding to work on their root systems and will send up more top growth when the temperatures rise. ;)
This is my best guess as to what is going wrong, however I don't know what you guys are doing...are you adding fertilizer to the water? What kind of soil is in the container? I used a skimmer to get rid of algae until my pot went outside and then I got some minnows to keep things clean.
Cam, I can send a few types of peppers you'll like. :08:
: )
Willow87
03-25-2011, 05:51 PM
Well the water stays about 70 degrees, may be a little cooler at night and maybe a little warmer during the day. The containers are right in front of a south facing window, so both get plenty of sun. I used soil that was out in my garden and today I added a little earthworm castings to it.I still dont know why its taking them so long to open. I dont want to rush them but I want to start seeing the leaves come out of the water lol. I would love some peppers I'm still excited about the castor bean plant

It'll be awhile yet before you'll see the aerial leaves, Cam. ;) The floater leaves will actually shrivel up and die outside of the water. :(
Are the stems still growing longer, even though the leaves are not completely unfurling, Cam?
Cool, JaNan! :waving:
Glad you're around. I was wondering if you had a chance to see my lastest aero-garden success! I am so thrilled...beyond words. My very own sundew seedlings! :goteam:
Looking forward to seeing your shots JaNan...
: )
Willow87
03-25-2011, 06:15 PM
Oh wow i have one of the floater leaves coming out of the water but I added a little water to the container. I know the stems on both lotus plants are very long and since they arent in a huge container, they are curling back around. But the leaves are looking alot more promising
The Hollyberry Lady
03-25-2011, 06:40 PM
Cam, because the stems are curling around, the floaters may be inclined to pop out of the water, so be sure to poke them back down or they'll turn black and die. :(
The aerial leaves that come later are different though, and they grow upright, out of the
container. ;)
: )
Willow87
03-25-2011, 06:48 PM
Ok I pushed the floaters back down and I added more water so every leaf is at the surface or a little below the surface
The Hollyberry Lady
03-25-2011, 07:04 PM
If they're just floating on the top, it's all good Cam. They don't necessarily need to be completely submerged. ;)
Good luck with it...
: )
Willow87
03-25-2011, 07:06 PM
Thanks Sherry. I really do hope they survive, but if they dont I still have 5 more seeds lol

I got a Peach Delight ginger plant from Dean and I put it in a bigger pot and it has roots and a couple of sprouts on it. I cant wait until it flowers. When my dragon fruit start growing I may use a tomato cage for support
The Hollyberry Lady
03-25-2011, 07:28 PM
Wow, that sounds way too cool Cam! Be sure to show shots soon...
Good idea about the tomato cage. ;)
: )
Willow87
03-25-2011, 07:32 PM
I definitely will. I saw a picture of the flowers and they have peach in the center and they are suppose to smell like honeysuckle. I also found out that they are a cold hardy ginger. I saw on gardenweb someone using one and and I thought that would be a good solution for support. Dean showed me a picture of his dragon fruit support

The Hollyberry Lady
03-25-2011, 08:54 PM
Ok I tried several shots with my magnifying glass but things still looked the same. This is the best I could do because they're just too darm tiny. There's 2 on the side, to the left of the sponge, and there's actually 4 on top of it, but they're the tiniest ones. Try blowing up the shot, but I could only see them with the magnifying glass!

Hi JaNan & Cam! :waving:
I wish we had some warm weather to enjoy...I was just looking for a pair of socks because my feet are freezing! So how hot will it be in July & August there then JaNan?
How are things in your aero-garden? Did you see the shots of my sundew seedlings today? If you blow the shots up, you'll see them.

I'm reading all the New Posts now.
Could easily be between 110 to 115 in July and August. We are already in a drought from no rain. It doesn't bode well for the rest of the year since this is when we usually get our rain!
I'm getting a reply ready for the AG thread now! :)

Sherry, sorry to hear you are still getting cold temperatures. Its up to around mid 40s during the day here now and high 29s to low 30s at night. It looks like the trees are starting to bud.
I got motivated to mark the area for "dig safe." In MA it is the law that before you plant shrubs or trees, or even till a garden you have to mark the area and call a special number so all the utilities can be notified to come out and mark any of their stuff that is in the area you plan to dig. My blueberry bushes showed up Thursday or Friday, so I'm eager to get them in the ground. Hopefully I can get the utilities to come out and do their thing and get the plants in the ground in about a week. That will put it probably 3 weeks early but probably won't kill many if any of the plants. I'll just mulch around them real good.
I guess someone somewhere dug where they shouldn't so now everyone has to call. If you don't they even have a form on their website where you can report your neighbors and if your neighbors report you, you get a nice fine. Not sure how much it is, but not interested in finding out.

Hi Tom! :waving:
That's pretty wild that you have to call the Utilities before you can dig. You do here too, but they don't seem to be as strict about it and I'm not sure if there's a fine.
Good luck planting your stuff. :goteam:

You should check your nursery too Tom, because they likely have celery seedlings...I recall seeing some at ours in previous seasons.
I'm currently trying to sprout some purple pitcher seeds in the aero-garden, but I've also got some of them cold-stratifying in my fridge on a moist sponge for one month. It's already been 10 days and when the times comes, they go into my A-G to germinate. I'm trying different methods until I have success, and only sowing a 3-4 seeds at a time....so I don't run out of chances. ;)
Here's how purple pitcher plant looks and then you'll all know why I'm so excited and why I'd crack open some champagne if one of the seeds sprouts...

You know what Tom...I think you're right. :ha:
The sponges do get a little green algae growth on them I think. Likely from the water & light combo. I notice though that even when you buy venus flytraps at the nursery, they always have a green film over the soil. It's because things are always so constantly moist I guess and mossy green stuff forms. Hopefully it won't hurt but it can be removed if necessary.
You likely thought you were going color blind...or that I was!!! :ha:

I distressed that my pepper and spearmint seeds have yet to sprout after a week. Maybe I'll start some more. I really need to get a proper set up for sprouting. I just use those cardboard pots with some starter soil. No dome to keep insects out and humidity in. Also the basement where I am sprouting is only around mid to high 60s right now.
The Hollyberry Lady
03-27-2011, 11:26 AM
This time of year Tom, covers aren't really necessary. What's more important is that you have a good sterile and well-draining medium to germinate your seeds in. ;)
March is the natural indoor seed sprouting time and they'll pop now, like no other time of year...without a cover.
A week is not really that long, especially for some pepper seeds. Keep the soil misted until you see sprouts. :D
Good luck, Tom.

I went to the store to pick up some soda. I ended up getting another pineapple. This time I'm going to root it out of soil so I can watch the roots. I also picked up some more pepper seeds just in case the current ones don't sprout.
The Hollyberry Lady
03-27-2011, 03:19 PM
Soda...too funny! :ha: Bob always makes fun of me because us Canadians call it "pop".
So you picked up some more pepper seeds Tom...which kind?
I love pepper seeds...and I've got them sprouting in every window. Just keep the pots someplace warm and they'll sprout for ya Tom. They can be slow, so just be patient and don't worry. ;)
Misting the soil with a mist bottle will help the seeds sprout quicker. Just keep the soil moist, but not soggy.
I sowed some Chamomile seeds today, so I can make tea from the dried flowers. :goteam:
I was checking through my seed collection and seeing what else to sow today! :ha: I'm actually getting more seeds soon that I ordered so I'll have more to share shortly.
Good Lord, when does the seed insanity end! :ha:
I have an abundance of Pepper Joe's Alma Paprika seeds right now and am looking forward to a seed popping soon. It should be a great variety. I understand the fruits are sweet with a hint of heat. I like trying all the different kinds.

The Hollyberry Lady
03-27-2011, 04:37 PM
Yup, and get your wife to fill you up a mist bottle with HOT water from the tap, because by the time you squirt it onto the soil, it'll be warm. ;)
This will surely help them sprout if you do it once a day. Just keep things nice and warm and don't let the soil dry out.
California Wonder...those should be nice for you Tom. Don't forget too that if you taste any peppers throughout the season that you really like, either hot or sweet...you can save the seeds and produce them yourself. Even ones from the market. :D
Take a shot of the peppers you save seed from, and you can trade them in the Seed Traders thread. :goteam:

Sherry, I will probably be hounding you with questions about my blueberry bushes. I hear they are very similar to holly as far as care and fertalizer and stuff.
I found a guy about a mile or two down the street that sells pine mulch. I put in an order for 3 cubic yards. If my math is right that should do 3 feet by 40 feet by 3 inches deep.

Dying, or not producing any fruit?
If they're dying or not bearing fruits then it's obvious their requirements are not being met. Soil testing to see what the pH they're growing in is, will tell all.
Just do lots of research and follow the best advice and see how it goes. Buying cultivars that grow well in your area and taking the advice of the nursery you buy them from, is the very best you can do.
If the right requirements are met, they really are not hard to grow. You'll see, Tom. Have faith. ;)

You have any coffee drinkers in the house? Use your coffee grounds and any coffee not drank mix it with your water. Lots of fruit trees and bushes love it. Just make sure it is unsweetened! :) If not a lot of businesses just trash it. If you ask for it they usually give it to you. Even big guys like Starbucks give their coffee grounds to gardeners.

Alright you guys, enough chatting...or I'll never get these seeds done. Also too, bad weather is blowing in and it's snowing right now!!! I cannot believe it, but it is. It's like snowy rain. Yuck.

I love the shots, so post as many as you like. He really is trying so hard...poor guy. She could at least flirt with him a little. What a bitch! :ha:
Ok, I'm still working on some stuff here and then I gotta go to the mailbox. My mom's gonna walk with me when I'm ready.
So glad to finally be sending you guys' stuff off. It's the right time of year now anyway and it's the time I get all my seed orders from companies I order from. Most I haven't got quite yet though. You guys are getting like 20 or more varieties from me, so get ready!
Ok as for the dwarf bedding mix petunias...
It's a mixture of smaller flowered, dwarf, open pollinated Grandiflora types. Blooms all season long. Mature height is 18".

It's true Tom. I have men that try to get my attention sometimes, and some of them I wouldn't even give the time of day, let alone anything else! :ha:
Too funny though, those pictures JaNan.
Well I'm back now so stop worrying. ;)
Cam, you are now the proud owner of my entire sunflower collection!!! :08: You will be pleasantly surprised by the seeds, I'm sure.
JaNan, I included the petunias and think they'll be just great for ya. Petunias can also be pruned and shaped too, so no worries.
Things will go out first thing in the morning, so you guys could get your seeds as early as Saturday or Monday. Hope you enjoy them all. :D

That was hilarious Tom...and so true. :ha:
Well now I've got a second wind so I might stay up for a bit and browse.
You're very welcome Cam, for the seeds. I knew you'd love them, which makes sending them so much more fun. I like to share with other gardeners. It's one of my favorite things to do.
I think I promised you some seeds too, didn't I Tom? :waving:
I'm sending Dean some seeds next so I can easily send some your way as well. Why don't you browse through the Seed Trader's thread and make a list of what you want and I'll send them out to you by next week. :D
Please don't be shy though...pick at least 10 of them. I don't want to be left with a bunch of seeds at the end of the season so it's good to share them with others who can enjoy them too. Surely I've got some stuff you might like Tom, so let me know...
G'night JaNan...and Cam if you're off to bed as well. I won't stay up too late but maybe another hour or so.

I was just posting some shots in the aero-garden thread. I can't wait to see my first hot pepper in a few days! :08: It's very exciting.

I don't remember if you promised me anything. But i appriciate the offer. Here are 5 I came up with from that post. I pretty much only grow edible plants.
giant pumpkin seeds
masquerade hot pepper
blue prince/princess holly seeds
Didn't you have some kind of dark pepper that looks black?
ruby eclipse sunflower
I'll PM you my address. Maybe just by being in your presence the seeds will grow well for me. I also expect I will put more effort into growing them as I don't want your time to be wasted by sending them to me.
The Hollyberry Lady
04-04-2011, 01:04 AM
No worries Tom and no strings attached...grow them well or don't, that's your business. I don't want you to think just because I gave you the seeds, you have to do things differently than the way you normally would. I'm just glad you want some. ;)
I'll check your pm in the morning. I have Black Pearl if that's the one you mean, and Explosive Amber too. I have to wait to harvest some fruits on my explosive amber though, to replenish my supplies, but I've got a few black pearls to spare. It's the blackest of all.
Too funny you want the giant pumpkin seeds!!! Do you guys have a pumpkin weighing contest in your town? These suckers are huge Tom. Hope you've got room.

Hey Janan. I'm so glad it rained. My mom had to drive in it and she said the roads flooded really quickly and alot of the street lights went out. I just have a few pots blown around and one of my trellises fell over. I think we got an inch here and alot of it is already drying up lol
Jananas Bananas
04-04-2011, 09:31 AM
You got twice as much as we did. The weatherman said a half inch for us! It doesn't take long for the roads to flood, that's for sure!!!! I just set a few of the pots in the garage. The wind is blowing pretty hard right now out of the north.
Willow87
04-04-2011, 10:02 AM
It was a nice quick rain, though the flooding was scary. I think 10 major roads in Dallas were closed from the high water and 2 people had to be rescued. I couldnt believe how strong the wind is blowing.

Wow, sounds like you guys had some bad weather. Us too, last night. It was snowy slushy rain for us and it got real cold and windy. Tonight we're supposed to have thunderstorms but they change the predictions so much, I can't keep up. :ha: One day it's spring, and the next day it's winter. I will say it is super mild today though.
So I've been busy posting and loading a few shots. How's everyone's night going so far? I'm around on and off.
Wonder where Hippie made off to. We never hear from him anymore. Does anyone know? Hope he's ok.
Oh and Cam, last night when I was putting my seeds away, I noticed I accidently missed a sunflower variety and didn't send it to you...the fashion mix one. I didn't see it and thought I had them all. That's what happens when you've got a hundred seed packets to search through.

Hi Sherry. Yes the weather was pretty bad, but we really need the rain here. March was the second driest March on record. We only got .7 inches of rain. The last really good rain we had here was from a Tropical Storm, and it flooded here, but after that it was a period of dry weather. Its ok about the Sunflower seeds. I have to figure out were to plant them lol. The dragon fruit and the night blooming cereus that I got from Dean developed roots. The dragon fruit have alot new aerial roots that are sprouting everywhere

04-04-2011, 06:53 PM
I didnt know there were that many varieties of peppers. You could have a taste test with all of the peppers you are growing lol. I cant wait to grow the seeds, i lost quite a few things this winter because of the unusual cold spell. I've never really had much color in my yard. The soil in most of my yard is brick-like clay so it can be a challenge. There are a few areas where the soil is really good. I looked outside today and my bamboo is starting to grow more. I really want it to take over one part of my yard, because its barren in that area. I do have 3 concord grapes by them that I'll need to buy trellises for. I think its too hot for concord grapes but my sister got them for 50 cents.
The Hollyberry Lady
04-04-2011, 07:28 PM
You never know until you try, with the grapes Cam. Hoping they'll work out for you. 50 cents...you can't beat that. :08:
Yes, I plan on doing some taste testing of all my peppers and seed saving too. I need to replenish my seed supply on certain pepper varieties that I've shared with lots of people. I also enjoy growing them in my windows when it's still too cold outside to even consider.
We're not completely done with frost here until May 10th. Peppers wouldn't stand a chance outside until then and as you know I won't be doing any outdoor gardening here this year, accept at my mom's new place.
So yes Cam, you are going to have a yard full this year. Will you be starting a castor bean seed right away when you get your package? I still want to send you more pepper varieties but will wait until I harvest some fruits from my growings. I plan on saving tons of seeds galore.
Explosive Amber is one of the most popular and I have four seedlings I'm growing now so it won't be long before I'll have tons of fruits and seeds. The plants are small and dwarf. The leaves are black, but Black Pearl is blacker. I sent you Black Pearl Cam. You should google it because it's
awesome. :08:

Sherry, I messed up. I put a cup of fertalizer around each blueberry bush. What can I do to fix things other than dig up all of the plants. I thought I was supposed to put a pound around them but I'm reading online it is only supposed to be a tblsp.
Also, here is a question for the group. Should a planter feel moist about 3 inches down if the top is dry? Is it normal or does that mean my soil isn't well draining?
The Hollyberry Lady
04-04-2011, 07:47 PM
What kind of soil are you using Tom and do you have good drainage holes on the bottom of the pot?
This cup of fertilizer that you accidently applied...did you already water it into the earth?
Let me know...

I used 1/3 perlite, 1/3 cactus mix, 1/3 some generic soil that I don't know the composition of.
I didn't water it in, but it is very wet out as rained today.
I read this on the holy tone package: Package directions call for shrubs under 3 feet in diameter to be fed in spring with 1 cup of Holly-tone per foot of diameter
Is hollytone not as bad as some other fertalizers?
Willow87
04-04-2011, 07:53 PM
I wish i could come to your pepper taste testing. I love peppers. Well at least you will be doing gardening at your mom's new place, and you have your cool aero garden. I'm definitely going to start the castor bean right away. I have a couple of spots in the front of my yard that I want to plant them. I cant plant them in the backyard because I have dogs. Its the sunniest part of my yard. I know they are probably a full sun plant so i only have part of the front yard. I will be so happy to grow Black Pearl peppers, I will be happy to grow anything LOL
The Hollyberry Lady

I've never used Holly Tone Tom, but Bob uses it and I believe it's organic.
If you think there's too much and it hasn't been completely watered in, shovel the top layer off so you might be able to collect the excess. You don't want to poison your new shrubs.
Good luck and hope they'll be ok.

04-04-2011, 08:15 PM
hollytone is organic. And the packaging says one cup per foot of plant. I just freaked out when I saw all the posts talking about 1 tbsp. They must be talking about some other kind of fertalizer.

So yeah, Hollytone is good to use and I think your Blueberries are going to be great.

The Hollyberry Lady
04-04-2011, 08:22 PM
Both sites are correct Cam...it's ornamental, plus edible too. The fruits are hot as hell!

Ok thats so cool that it can be both an ornamental and edible. I'm kind of it since you said that LOL. I like hot foods, but my tolerance for it isnt like it use to be lol. I'll keep it in full sun then. How long does it live? Can it live for several years or is it mainly a temporary plant? Sorry for asking so many questions

Yes, don't over analyze things Tom. ;)
Besides that, plants don't usually just instantly die and there are signs of things going wrong long before actual death occurs, so improvements can be made. I bet your blueberry shrubs will be great. :D
Yes Cam, peppers can be perennial in some zones and definitely indoors. I like just sowing fresh pepper seeds each year though because the plants are more vigorous and production is better on new young plants.
You're gonna love that Black Pearl variety. :goteam:
I saw that you posted on my FireCracker picture Cam. I can send you seeds for that one also and I've marked it down for next time.
I was unable to supply you with any other colors of Nelumbo at this time Cam, and I'm sorry. :( I only have the pink one for sharing because the others I only have 1-2 seeds for each. I may at a later time though.
I sent you seeds for this...both you and JaNan...

It's Gaultheria Procumbens "winterberry". It's a dwarf perennial shrublet that prefers shade.

I already like the Black Pearl Variety. Its disease and pest free, that's a major plus. I cant wait to start growing it. My mom keeps telling me, where am i going to plant all of the seeds lol. I may plant some this year and then some the following years. The Firecracker looks so cool. I've never had ornamental peppers, or any type of chili peppers. I've only grown bell peppers. Its alright about the lotus Sherry. The Gaultheria Procumbens looks so cool! I like that it tolerates shade, thats what most of my garden has.
The Hollyberry Lady
04-04-2011, 09:24 PM
I wish I had've known you liked the firecracker variety, because I have lots of seeds available for it right now. It's one hot mother...... though, let me tell you!!! :ha: I mean HOT !!!!
It's an adorable shapely plant to grow because it tends to trail down the pot as you saw in my picture. The fruits start out yellow and upright above the leaves, and ripen red when mature. It's a serious chili and if you love heat, you'll enjoy this one immensely. I wrote it down on your seed list that I keep so I don't forget what to send. I did also send Masquerade your way though too for now, and you will love the colors. It turns like 6 or 7 shades before ripening red!
Will you grow the Black Pearl in a pot or the garden? If you want the leaves to be super dark and black, make sure it's in full sunlight. The fruits start out like glossy black marbles, then ripen to red when mature. Be sure to save lots more seeds from your fruits but don't let them get cross-pollinated with other hot pepper varieties if you want the seeds to be true.
: )
Willow87
04-04-2011, 09:31 PM
I never thought I would ever grow ornamental peppers. I always pass by them in the garden centers but never think about them. I think growing them from seed actually makes it more interesting. I cant wait to see the Masquerade. I really do need some color indoors and outdoors lol. I dont know if I'll be eating them though, for some reason I cant eat as much spicy food as I use too. I'm getting old LOL. I'm going to grow a couple in the garden and some for indoors. Though I have limited window space at the moment lol. I wonder how the cross pollinated varieties would look like? Where I want to put them gets plenty of afternoon sun.
The Hollyberry Lady
04-04-2011, 09:50 PM
They'd look like a blend of the two that crossed together. One of the reasons I love growing peppers indoors too is because I avoid cross pollination and my pepper seeds are always true. ;)
Oh you're going to have some color alright Cam, that's for sure! I sent those carnation and mixed morning glory seeds too. :D
Ornamental peppers are so fun and easy to grow from seed. They provide longterm ongoing color.

That is so cool. I saw a variegated Black Pearl in Lowe's before. I love carnations and I was just telling my mom that I wanted to grow Morning Glories the other day. I'm definitely going to have plenty of color. There is a tree stump that fell over in the back. I'm going to use that to let the morning glory grow on and have it cover it. I dont want to become addicted to peppers LOL

The Hollyberry Lady
04-04-2011, 10:26 PM
Never heard of it but I'll google it...calico.
Yes, those morning glories are really nice and the leaves and huge and heart shaped. There's many colors in the mix but those were two I took shots of. I grew them all together so there was a mix of colors but it looked like one vine.
I think the seeds should be soaked for 24 hours before sowing. I include instructions and descriptions for all the seeds I send so you'll know what to do.
I'm just listening to some tunes on youtube right now and thinking about getting some yogurt. I held back and didn't sow those habenaro seeds after all. I even have some Serrano pepper seeds too, but I think I have enough for now. I have a type called Christmas pepper too that's very cute and ornamental.
I did some serious pepper trading with people all over the world, from many different sites, a couple years ago, and some of the best I have came from traders in Portugal and Minnesota!!! They both set me up with some of the best types I have.
I want some white chilies and white sweet peppers next. :08:

Thanks for including instructions. I have a lot reading I need to do on the different plants lol. The Christmas peppers sound cute, i love the color that the ornamental peppers have. I'm learning more and more lol

It doesn't matter if the seeds are 3 years old Tom...they're likely still viable. I'd only need a few, if you have a couple to spare. Are they hot or sweet? Very attractive plants and thanks for sharing.
Yes Cam, I've traded with people from several different gardening sites all across the world. I've done seed exchanges with people in Japan, China, England, Turkey, Mexico, across USA, Ecuador, Portugal, Germany, and France. I know there's some I'm forgetting but this gives you an idea. ;)
It's fun trading with other gardeners in other areas of the world. :goteam:

Wow thats alot of places. I've traded with someone from another country. My pink wisteria is growing fast, I think I'll need to repot it soon because its starting to climb
The Hollyberry Lady
04-07-2011, 06:41 PM
When I grew wisteria from seed, I provided a little trellis in the pot or stake for the vine to weave around. ;) Glad it's growing well for you, Cam.
Yup, I've traded seeds with tons of people, and then some. :ha: Sometimes I've traded with people more than once. Like Penny from this site...her and I have traded likely 7-10 times!!!
We worked it out that we shared all the seeds we got in trades with others, with each other also. Just 2 or 3 even, if that's all we had. All you need is one sprout and you can then collect seeds later from the plant. :D
So, you and JaNan's seeds will be there soon! :08: I'm hoping by Saturday, but if not, I'm sure Monday. I don't know who's more excited...you guys or me! :ha:

Yup, I grew them from seed Cam. Not especially fond of red but they are so pretty who wouldn't enjoy them.
I've been changing things around again in my aero-garden! I think I've got it right this time though. I'm going to grow 6" zinnias and cornflowers in the same pod. It'll be like a bouquet of flowers.
Some of my hot peppers in pots in my windows are beginning to set buds! Soon I'll be collecting many more pepper seeds from my growings and I can surely share them with you guys. Some are turning out very pretty. You'll see, because I'll show shots later.
Do you think you might start some pepper seeds Cam, when you get my envelope? You will just die when you see that "Masquerade" variety. That is one stunningly colorful and gorgeous pepper plant.

Wow it must be so nice to have something flower that you grew from seed. I'm going definitely start the pepper seeds. I showed my mom and sister your pepper pics and they were amazed. I need something colorful for my yard and indoors

Yeah it is cool having something you grew from seed, bloom. I'm really liking that soft pink one with the white centers. That's the color geranium I was looking for this year.
It's time to re-pot both of them tomorrow morning. They need bigger pots and then they'll bloom like crazy. It really was nice to wake up to the first of the blooms this morning. Kinda cheered me up.

Yes and I sent you those carnation seeds you requested too...they make excellent and super long-lasting cutflowers Cam. :D
I think I might have sent you the white marigolds as well, and if so, they are just amazing for cutflowers too.
You'll be happy when you see. I shouldn't get your hopes up but wouldn't it be too cool if you got my seeds tomorrow?! Anything's possible and I know your mail service is faster than ours.
We'll see, but likely Saturday.

I love carnations, I definitely want some cut flowers for indoors. Wow I didnt know there were white marigolds. Those are my favorite annuals. It would be nice if I got the seeds tomorrow =)

They're called French Vanilla and they're like a very very pale yellow but the sun bleaches them nearly white after a few days. They're one of my most favorite flowers.
JaNan requested them, but I thought I sent some to you too Cam. Let me know. The seeds sprout in two days!
Back in awhile, crocodile...

It doesn't matter if the seeds are 3 years old Tom...they're likely still viable. I'd only need a few, if you have a couple to spare. Are they hot or sweet? Very attractive plants and thanks for sharing.
: )
I will go plant more of the pepper seeds to try to get another white one.

04-07-2011, 09:29 PM
Tom, are those white sweet bell peppers?
I got a mixed sweet bell pepper packet that showed one on the package. I was wondering if we bought the same thing!
tbaleno
04-07-2011, 09:58 PM
Yes, sweet bell peppers. My package was just a small zip bag with a paper label thrown in with instructions on planting them with marker on the outside saying "assorted sweet peppers"
My guess is that they just grabbed seeds from peppers that may have been cross polinated and shoved them in a bag for sale.
You can see them sitting on top of the emily's garden on my webcam

Oh I thought you meant you collected and had seeds for the white ones Tom, but you mean it's a mix and you don't know what's what...I get it now. ;)
I think I might just try to get some seeds for a white type this year so you won't have to the bother of growing tons of plants just to get white seeds for me. I sure appreciate it though. I think they're just so gorgeous and ornamental.
I'd like to find a small white hot pepper variety if I can. It would be so nice to grow a white pepper with a cherry red one. What a great contrast it would be.
Hope everyone has a great Friday.

Ok thanks for letting me know, you guys. ;)
At least we know they'll be there soon. Our mail service is slow so it just depends on how fast they got to the US, but it's possible for you guys to get it tomorrow. Wouldn't that be so nice?!
I'm having a rather boring evening at home, but I'm loading a shot for the aero-garden thread...

Wait until you guys see the envelopes!!! :D
I was a bit disappointed because a couple days after I sent your seeds I saw these great new sunflower stamps!!! I mailed you guys sunflowers so it would have been cool to have used the sunflower stamps on your envelopes, but I did use some new Easter stamps. I'll use the sunflower ones on your next mailings. They're so cute. ;)
JaNan, now don't be upset if they don't get there tomorrow. Most of the stuff you know about but there might be one or two surprises in there for ya. The second envelope will actually be more exciting because the first one was filled up with all your picks. :ha:
Plus too, I wanted to collect some more seeds to share that I didn't have enough of before. You are going to be happy. :D
So you guys are lucky to have mail service on Saturday...we don't. Our post office is open though on Sat & Sun, unlike yours. I wish we got mail on Saturday though. I'm waiting on some seeds from Dean but likely next week.

I cant wait to see the envelopes either lol. Wow that is neat that your post office is open on the weekend.
Jananas Bananas
04-08-2011, 09:48 PM
That's in the works to change though Sherry. We won't have mail delivery on Saturday and everything will be closed on the weekend. Our postal service operates in the red. Just like most of the rest of our government!!! :( I'm sure it's on the news worldwide, because it is all over ours. It is pretty fast considering everything though.
Yeah, I can't wait to see my envelope. I bought a new tub, to be my new seed bin. :ha:
The Hollyberry Lady
04-08-2011, 10:29 PM
Too funny you bought a new seedbin, JaNan! :ha: You're gonna need it! It'll be better than getting seeds from a seed company! All of mine are fresh and viable, just so you guys know. None of them are old seeds. :D
I can't wait to see what you guys will pick to grow. It'll be fun watching stuff with you. I know you're gonna have a blast. I say you try some of the foxglove hybrids I sent anyway Cam. Maybe these will thrive for you.
Oh by the way, I've got some Explosive Amber sprouts today!!! :08: That's the nearly black dwarf pepper plant with bright purple fruits. I'll have tons of seeds soon!!! It's the plant I get asked for seeds the most. Here's why...

This is my darkest purple one. It is a BIG pepper too!
Here's my black pearl when it was out in the front yard. Almost black!

Are they all Black Pearl or is the first one something different? They're just stunning
JaNan!!! :goteam:
Yes they get darker the more sun they get. That's why I like peppers in the A-G because the light will make the leaves darker.
See that Black Pearl, Cameron? I sent you seeds for it!

04-08-2011, 11:26 PM
All three are the same plant. That was my first black pearl. I hope you sent me some too, Sherry. I sent seeds off in trades and either didn't save any for myself or lost them. :(
I posted those pictures just for you Cameron, to tease you! :ha:
The Hollyberry Lady
04-08-2011, 11:46 PM
I thought you had it JaNan, so I didn't send it!
I will in the 2nd envelope though so don't worry. We all gotta save lots of seeds from our growings this year though so we'll have lots. I'm working on rebuilding my pepper seed supply again this season as I'm low again.
I'm still debating on sowing some orange mini-habanero seeds just so I can save more seeds from a few fruits, then discard the plant if it's in the way. It shouldn't get super big though because it's mini.
Those pictures teased us all JaNan, not just Cam! :ha: That is just gorgeous with those black leaves. How stunning! :goteam:

That plant grew to about 3 1/2 feet tall and about 3 feet wide too Sherry. It came back for me the following year too off the same stems. I loved it!
That's OK. I will buy a new one when they get them in. I just enjoyed it too much not to have one. It was a thirsty booger! And it would tell me every morning too, by wilting.
I wanted to plant an all black garden at one time. Because I really knew they were dark purple! :ha: I have some black hollyhock seeds, I may try a start in the AG's. It is a large plant, but those flowers are magnificent!
I need to put more seeds on the traders thread. I'll have to do it tomorrow though. I am pooping out for tonight.

So what are everyone's plans this weekend. I might be going to see a band tonight with the girls.
