I like storms too but I'm terrified of lightning and thunder lol

When I was little, this girl I knew had a bad accident in her family...her father was struck and killed by lightening, out in a field! It was terrible.

Willow87
02-28-2011, 07:54 PM
Thats terrible. That's what scares me. I was taking my dogs outside during a thunderstorm and a bolt of lightening struck so close, i could actually feel the static in the air. I'm also scared of the wind during a thunderstorm, I guess I'm a big chicken lol
The Hollyberry Lady
02-28-2011, 07:59 PM
I'm scared too but like watching it at a far & safe distance. I've felt winds so strong before that I was nearly lifted off my feet, so I understand your fear of that too!
I know big strong winds will soon be here when March and spring hit. Yippeeeeee...tomorrow is March! :goteam: Spring is coming!

Same here or i like watching storms on t.v. lol. Its getting closer to severe weather season here, especially April and May.
The Hollyberry Lady

Yup...lots of rain and thunder & lightening! :08:
So I'm entertaining thoughts of transplanting a plant of mine tonight...it's just a houseplant but I think it could use a bigger pot now. Also, I might sow one or two more seeds even though I know I shouldn't...I can't seem to help myself.
I've been real busy packing...it's a lot of work. I'm doing a little bit each day so I can get it done over time and not all at once. I have a lot of stuff I'm throwing out right now because why pack clutter I don't want anyway.
I sowed a couple more strawberry seeds in my aero-garden because the others didn't pop yet and I got worried they were too old. I sowed some fresh woodland strawberry seeds, a type of Alpine, so they should come up within the week if the others don't...let's hope.
JaNan, when you're around, please let us know how your stuff is doing in the aero-garden thread...
: )
Willow87
02-28-2011, 08:12 PM
Wow Sherry, you have been busy LOL. I would love to grow some strawberries, the ones in the store are so gross and flavorless
The Hollyberry Lady
02-28-2011, 08:19 PM
Oh I know and half of them are white! Disgusting! If you do come across a berry you like though in summer...be sure to save the seeds. ;)
I have a special everbearing type called "Temptation" that's perfect for a hanging basket. The fruits are delicious and the plant has few runners. It produces berries until frost!
Too bad I couldn't grow it in my aero-garden but it's a trailing type better meant for a hanging basket...or strawberry pot.
: )
Willow87
02-28-2011, 08:23 PM
I know. i have to check everytime to see if there is any mold at the bottom. all it takes is one moldy strawberry LOL. When i get more room I'm going to try and grow some strawberries, or any kind of berry.

I want to grow more kinds too, Cam. :goteam:
I have a type of perennial fruiting bush I'm growing called "Goji Berry"...ever heard of it? The berries are extremely healthy and tasty too. I had seeds but I ordered some plants from a nursery in Quebec as well. The guy was so nice, he even sent me two extra free shrubs! :D
I want to grow some blackberries & raspberries...blueberries too!
Hey Blake! :waving: That sucks! Are they eating everything in sight?!
Nice to "see" you! ;)

02-28-2011, 08:36 PM
Hi Blake, are they doing any damage to your garden? They look so cute
Willow87
02-28-2011, 08:39 PM
Oh I've heard of Goji berries, though I dont know much about them. I'm hoping my blackberry starts growing
Blake09
02-28-2011, 08:40 PM
Thanks, :)
No damage right now, they are just eating the grass. I have peas, carrot, basil, and a few other Herb seeds planted (they should pop between mar 2-8). The only damage that they are doing is walking in it and pushing some of the seeds deeper. See the fense posts, that was last years deer fence.
The Hollyberry Lady
02-28-2011, 08:41 PM
Good there's no damage, Blake! ;)
Good luck with your blackberries, Cam? Did you collect the seeds?

Thanks, Cam. ;)
Remember too that I'm willing to share the Easter cactus with you guys as well. I can't wait to get a peek at the flowers this spring. Spring cacti are so special and pretty.
I am in the process of getting some seeds together for JaNan and you, Cam. Don't give up on me yet. I didn't intend to be dealing with everything I am this winter and haven't been as on top of things as I normally am. Spring is approaching fast and I can soon mail plants and cuttings also.
Looking forward to seeing fruit on that prickly pear cutting. Too amazing that the 1st bud dropped and another one is now growing!
That organic water-soluble DNF formula for seedlings and cuttings really works great!

Thanks Sherry. I still have your seeds too that ill need to give you. Im getting some plumeria seedlings and an orchid cactus also from a friend
The Hollyberry Lady

Sounds so fun...getting cool stuff from a pal. :D
Plumerias are fun to grow! :goteam:
I was posting in a new thread about the fertilizer I use...it's organic and water-soluble. ;)
I just put Henry to bed too. He's a little late tucking in tonight but he cried to stay up later, so I let him. He had his favorite treat before bed...a peanut in the shell.
I am now drumming up ideas of more seeds to sow. :ha: Someone please stop me!

Nice pics of your blooms...and about to be blooms, Cameron! Love your room full of plants. The Amaryllis is gorgeous! Totally cheerful and beautiful.
Blake, thanks for posting and popping in. Good luck with all your banana plants. Things are looking pretty good. ;)
JaNan, looks like you had fun at the hockey game. I've been to many of them because it's no secret that Canadians love hockey. :08:
So I've been busy packing today and getting things organized. The weather is still yucky but bearable. Hope it's sunny tomorrow.
JaNan...someone commented that my prickly pear cutting could just be growing another "segment" and not a bloom at all!

G' Morning Gang!
Sherry it may be a new branch - I have never noticed them looking like an octopus before. I went out and looked at mine and none of them have any new growth yet. I have three different kinds. As soon as I get some new growth showing I will be sure and take pictures for you. I even tried to google it and didn't get a definitive answer. So, I guess it is a wait and see. :) It looks happy and healthy (mine are all outside)!
The color on that Spring Cactus is very pretty. I did not know that they had color like that. The little Texas Mountain Laurel looks so cute! Working on AeroGarden pictures now.
That is a Canadian team we were playing (and they won)!
Great pictures Blake! It looks like they did really well in their barrels! I love deer, they are such beautiful graceful animals. Though I guess not very wanted in a garden. DH would be out there trying to get dinner!
Cam your flowering pictures are beautiful. Does Jane smell like the Southern Magnolia? I love the scent that they have. ~J

those little "hair" like things will eventually be the small tufts of tiny spines that you can barely see and pull out of your skin. as this little guy grows in the picture here, they will end up about 1-2'' from each other on the new leaf segment.

drew leonard

They are quite heavy after 5-6 segments are full size with the Tunas, in a watered pot!
You could grow them in the garden and then cut them back and bring them inside for the winter!
Jananas Bananas
03-04-2011, 08:10 PM
Well mine are outside, they can get quite large. But you will be able to contain them in a pot easily. You can always eat the young pads and the fruit. The pads when cooked and with butter and salt taste like green beans, I think they are delicious. You can actually buy them here already cleaned and cooked in jars in the Mexican food isle at the grocery stores, and sometimes just the fresh pads in produce. ~J

Wow Janan, you are so lucky. I love going to estate sales and garage sales. Drew, with my magnolia i have it in a mostly sunny for most of the year until it gets hot, then I move it to partial shade. I fertilized it alot last year so I dont know why. Its also in a giant container so that may also be a reason
drew leonard
03-05-2011, 03:55 PM
Cam,
High Nitrogen Ferts? If so; could be the reason maybe! Check the P.H. also. Should be around 6
Willow87
03-05-2011, 04:29 PM
Well the fertilizer I used was high in phosphates. Then I added some of my potassium fertilizer that i used for my bananas. I think the pH neutral to slightly alkaline because the water here is slightly alkaline

I want to grow a southern magnolia when I can. I've had it in a container for 3 years. Its a slow grower so it makes a perfect container plant. But sometimes I wonder if it would grow fast and do better if I planted it?
The Hollyberry Lady
03-05-2011, 06:19 PM
I believe nearly everything grows better in the ground but I don't know much about magnolia tree growing. Make sure it's hardy to your zone of course, and then plant it out in spring. It'll just love it! :D

The main issue with this magnolia and most deciduous magnolias is the heat here. Mine ends up losing all of its leaves no matter the amount of water I give it. It gets scorched in mid summer and by September its naked lol. I put it in partial shade during mid to late summer. The southern magnolia is the more common choice grown here. Though it needs alot of organic and rich soil. Henry looks so cute! He is posing for the camera lol
The Hollyberry Lady
03-05-2011, 06:35 PM
He really is a poser! :D
It sounds like that type isn't the best suited to your conditions, Cam. I'd plant it in a full-shade position, or keep it in a pot. How cool anyway, to have a magnolia tree in a container!
You've kept it alive this long and it's now blooming...so you're doing something right. :goteam: I'd leave it as is...until you get the other one you want.
Then you can sell that one on eBay. ;)
: )
Willow87
03-05-2011, 06:40 PM
My birds are kind of scared of the camera lol.
Its strange because they sell them alot around here, so I always thought magnolias liked any type of weather as long as it wasnt too cold, but I was wrong lol. I'll definitely keep it in a container because I dont know how long i will be in this house, and I dont want to have to dig it up, so I'll keep it to a manageable size. Its so big I dont know if I could sell it on ebay LOL. Its about 5 feet tall right now and bushy.
The Hollyberry Lady
03-05-2011, 07:02 PM
I can't seem to recall if you showed us the whole tree Cam, but I'd like to see it sometime when you feel like it. It's just really cool that you have one of those. I admit I'm kind of jealous. :ha:
I bet it could remain in a pot for a long time to come...but you may choose to transplant it into something bigger in spring...although I'd research first and see if they mind transplanting because some trees don't take too kindly to it.
Henry isn't shy at all now, but he once was. He's now more like me though, and has gotten over it. He now says "that's not very nice"! I've said it to him when he's tried to peck at Buttons, my mom's bunny, or if he's in a mood and he juts his beak towards me threateningly. I didn't realize he'd picked up on it though and one morning he blurted it out, much to my surprise! He says things I don't even know he's learned, or picked up on! What a bird he is.

Ill post a picture of it tomorrow morning. It has a quite a few tiny leaves on it. The container is really big. I tried to get some seeds off of it the first year but the cones never produced anything. I may even try rooting some cuttings. Most people grow it as a large shrub or small tree because it doesnt get too big which is why I also like it. I've even seen magnolia bonsai online lol.
I think magnolias dont like to be bothered once planted, though I did transplant a friends southern magnolia and its doing well now.
Thats amazing, I wish mine could talk. Mine mimics the phone LOL
The Hollyberry Lady
03-05-2011, 07:23 PM
My aunt's male budgie, Willie, mimics her dog barking! :ha: Too cute that yours mimics the phone ringing!
So cool about magnolia trees! So your friend has the kind you really want...where did they get theirs from? Maybe you could try cuttings from their tree also. Neat that they don't get too big either...I like that.
I had a late lunch and need to make something to eat for dinner now, but I'm not sure what to make. Maybe just something simple...like a grilled cheese with a salad. I'm not starved but I should eat something.
I went out last night to my girlfriend's place and we played some old arcade games on playstation...like miss pac man. It was kind of fun. :D
Tonight I'm just hanging out but my mom next door invited me over if I want to go later on.
I'm going to offer Henry a bath if he wants one in the morning. I have a conditioner for his skin & feathers too that helps when he's molting...but I have to hold onto him to apply it and then rinse him off.

Well she got hers 10 years ago, one was in the front yard and one was in the back. the one in the front after 10 years was still only a foot tall and the one in the back is about 12 feet tall LOL. So I transplanted the one in the front to the backyard. I never thought of taking cuttings and I was just over there today LOL. Im going to try and read up about rooting magnolia cuttings. The flowers are huge and have a citrus like smell. The "Little Girl" Hybrids (Ann, Jane, Susan) are usually smaller types and bloom later than the saucer magnolias. Southern magnolias can get humongous, but they are evergreen.
I love playing arcade games, but now a days i play computer games lol. I had some flatbread sandwiches for dinner.

Now my mom called and wants to go splitz on a pizza when she's finished packing around 10!
Sounds good to me because I'm not in the mood to cook or bother too much at all.
Yeah I like playing Q-bert on computer sometimes late at night...I was really good at it when I was a kid but have discovered I'm even better as an adult! :ha:
Shhhhhsh...or you'll get me craving to play a game and I'll be gone!
Video games can be very addictive but I really don't play them too often. Mostly when I'm with friends or bored.
Do you know how to play chess, Cam? I could teach you! :ha: I wish someone would have me a game online. I've played with strangers but it's not as much fun.
So I took the pod with the strawberry seeds, out of the aero~garden! I realized today they're not germinating because they don't like the overly warm atmosphere. I will put the pod back into the system once the seeds pop of course but it's in my cool bathroom until they do. ;)
I bet they'll sprout now but it could be awhile until they realize the heat is gone and it's safe to come out now. We'll see...
I think yours and your friend's trees sound great, Cam. Now I want one too.

Good Morning Gang! Still sipping coffee and trying to shake the cobwebs out of my head! I sure did not want to wake up yet this morning, but the cats said that we has slept in long enough and were walking and purring all over us! That's hard to ignore, but I tried!
Got a few things at the estate sale yesterday, but not too much. It was a lot of fun. I will go take a few pictures in a little bit.
What is everyone going to do today? It is supposed to be beautiful today so I will get outside and probably work in my flower beds again. :)

Hi Gang! :waving:
Hope you're all having a great Sunday so far. I'm just tinkering around doing a few things and making green tea.
JaNan, did you see my mom's new Easter egg...and Buttons? He was so adorable last night and very affectionate. I just had to take a couple shots of him for the pet thread.
I'm glad you had fun at the auction...looking forward to seeing your shots.
Cam that's amazing that you only paid $17 bucks for it. That thing is so nice and worth way more. You're lucky to have such a special tree like that. I can tell you love it though, so no doubt it's well cared for. ;)
Wondering what might pop in my earo-garden today...perhaps those tomato seeds I sowed a few days ago. :D
I had fun at my mom's place last night...we were watching this comedy called "The Associate" with Whoopi Goldberg. It was actually really funny and I kind of ejoyed it...even though I'm not the biggest Whoopi fan.
So what are your plans today, everyone?

Cool Cam! :waving:
Yup, just file a Nelumbo seed and drop it in a shallow dish filled with about 2 inches of water. You'll add more later. If they're fresh seeds, they'll start germinating in a few days.
The warmer the water is kept, the faster germination will be. I kept my dish on a heat mat. Light is needed however as soon as the seed pops.
Good luck!

Hi Sherry if I'm successful with these, I think I'm going to take up a new hobby LOL. Janan lotus seeds remain viable for several years. There was even one that scientists grew that was 1,300 years old and it still sprouted. The seed coat is what helps it remain viable for a long time

Janan, one practice is putting the lotus seeds in a mud ball and throwing them in the pond. I dont know what that does specifically but people do it. The water needs to be at least 70 degrees i think for them to start sprouting. Though I may be wrong LOL
The Hollyberry Lady
03-07-2011, 09:45 PM
I tried the mudball trick in a cemetery pond but it didn't work for me. I never saw it again. :(
I think it's better if you can germinate the seeds indoors in a dish and then transplant it to a pond or container later.
Once sprouted and growing a bit, I buried my seed about an inch deep in the soil at the bottom of my container pond.
Yes, I strongly believe now and am convinced that the thieves were connected to my wonderful neighbor that assaulted my mom and I. She's pretty much proven to me that it's been her doing the stealing right straight along. Pathetic and sad, but some people have no conscience and think it's their right and their due to take what belongs to others.
Anyway, that's in the past but it's good to know that she won't be getting even one more plant from me. All my tulips are coming up out of the ground this spring before they ever bloom. I'll be spending time digging stuff up and giving it away. Just so happy that when I leave, the place will have nothing of mine growing or blooming. :woohoonaner:

Willow87
03-07-2011, 10:04 PM

Cameron if you have any feed stores close by sometimes they sell 25 to 50 gallon tubs. I buy mine for $6 each. They are liquid minerals for cows I think (nothing toxic), anyway they make great little ponds or very large pots for big plants if you drill some holes in the bottom of them! Cam, good soil smelly; somethings does not sound right!
Willow87

Well its a mix of compost, greensand, and lava sand. I wonder if its because the water is stagnant and the compost is making it smell bad

Hi Gang! :waving: Cameron that is great that you are already getting activity with your new lotus seeds! How are your lemon seeds doing? I agree with Drew, stinky doesn't sound good. I think there are ways to de-stinky things - I think they use lime on septic fields and stuff like that, but don't know if that would work or be safe on your soil.
Sherry has your little mystery seedling opened up any more today? My first thought was passiflora, but right now it looks like a clover! I'm so nosy, I would be taking one stone out at a time to see what was down in there and see if it is attached to your holly. But that's just me.........patience and me just don't jell! :ha: ~J

Thanks everyone. I'll try to find some charcoal. I think its just the rotting materials in it and since the water is stagnant, that probably doesnt help any. I wonder if it will effect the plants? So far my lemon seed havent come up yet. I hope they do soon because I would love to have a lemon tree
The Hollyberry Lady
03-10-2011, 12:09 AM
I'd still sprinkle some of the charcoal on top of the soil anyway though Cam, like Drew mentioned. If it were me, I'd no doubt have the whole bag of charcoal mixed through the entire pot! :ha:
I did read long ago however that if you add a thick layer of charcoal to the bottom of your pots when you're planting things in them, it sweetens the soil and helps to absorb excessive salts and also aids in over-fertilizing. When I first started gardening, I did it all the time.
Lemon seeds are easy to sprout, Cam. They take time so just have patience...
: )
drew leonard
03-10-2011, 07:09 AM
Cam, that stagnant water in the soil could possibly kill what you are tring to grow. The only things that I know that love stagnant soil are cattails and algae. What do you have growing in this pot; (think I missed that) can you show us a picture? If you can get to a pet store, just buy some of the aquarium charcoal that is in the small 1/8" chunks and mix in to the soil. I'd say maybe 10-15%...
But hey; if it is growing and healthy...

I just used clean garden soil in my container pond for my lotus Cam...and made sure I had some minnows in there to take care of the mesquito larvae and algae, and my water stayed clear and beautiful all summer long.
I even woke up some mornings to find the water in the container looking like fizzy soda pop, there were so many air bubbles from the fish and these little suckers I had at the bottom. I never had a single problem once I added the minnows.
Lotus isn't fussy about the soil it grows in either, even mucky is ok. When growing them in a container, the width is more important than the depth. Half barrels are an ideal size.
We were talking about Lotus, weren't we? :ha:
Gotta go for a bit but have a great day, gang! :03:

Good morning Janan! Sherry I guess I need to buy some clean garden soil. I used soil from one of my plant pots where plant died. I'll have to add that to my list of things to get for the lotus. I have gallon plastic ice cream containers that I want to transfer them to. I put the soil in and added water and when I let it set for a few days i stirred in a little more soil to make it bog-like and the smell was horrendous. I was afraid that the rotting smell would effect the plants growth.
The Hollyberry Lady
03-10-2011, 04:45 PM

Something very scary happened last night here and I found out about it this morning when I woke up to see a forensic's police vehicle in our parking lot...
Apparently last night, sometime between 7 and 10, my new neighbors directly beside me, were robbed!
I guess their deadbold was sticking and they didn't have it locked...only the handle was locked so the thief apparently shimmied their way in. Who would know their deadbolt wasn't working properly? Someone in the building, that's who...and as if we need to wonder who!
I just can't believe this was done while my mom and I were both home! The unit is directly across from my mom's place and if she'd looked through her peek hole she would have seen the robbery in progress! She didn't hear a sound and neither did I.
The person was obviously in socks with no shoes because there's no way you can be on our stairs with shoes and not be heard. The whole thing is highly suspicious to me, and in 11 years I've been here, no one's apartment has ever been broken into.
I am more than freaked out by it and tonight when I went out earlier I had my mom watch and listen for things. I have apartment insurance but even still. I would just die if someone broke in here...and took my little Henry! :(
Ayway, I'm just devastated for my neighbor's and I felt horrible to have to tell them I didn't see or hear a thing. They said their children's wallets were stolen and a whole bunch of electronic and computer equipment! I'm just stunned that someone could do this while we were home!
I know this though...only someone who lives here would know how to be quiet enough to do something like this and get away with it. Gosh, I can't wait to get out of here.
Hope everyone has a good night. :waving:

Very Creepy! I'll be glad when you get out of there too! They would take Henry just to get at you, if it is that hateful thief neighbor you have. And take Buttons too just to get at your Mom. You guys need to be VERY careful. If they are that bold to do that when everyone is home and right there. SHUDDER!!!! I'm sorry I'm not trying to scare you any further, but that is so worrisome. Maybe the cops will be more diligent now, that would be a good thing.
There are some little alarms they sell here that you can put on windows and doors that emit a shrill sound if you have them set and they are opened. They don't call the cops or anything but the sound usually will make an intruder run off. Maybe you could get a set of those. I think you can get them at WalMart or maybe your Canadian Tire would have them. Just a thought.

Happy Friday, Gang! :waving:
Hope you guys are having a good evening. ;)
Yes JaNan, frankly I'm terrified of what is going on here and am working on getting out quickly. There is something going on around here that isn't good and I have very bad suspicions. My mom and I have worked it out that when either one of us goes out, the other person watches and listens to make sure things are ok. I will not have my home robbed and invaded like that. How awful though for my neighbors. I feel horrible for them. :(
Not too much planned for tonight. It's a total winter wonderland here in London again...we just got hit with over 10 inches of snow!!!
I am staying in where it's warm and safe. Besides that, I'm terrified to go anywhere for too long at night because I could meet the same fate as my neighbors did! I even bring Henry to my mom's place when I go out...just in case. All the stuff can be replaced, but he can't be. No one will ever steal him from me, but I know they'd like to.
I really do know that someone that lives here, did this. It's too unbelievable and impossible any other way. There is a criminal ring here that involves at least 3 units, but I suspect 4. The owner is also friends that went to school with the one that assaulted my mom and I!!! Things are corrupt here now and the sooner I leave, the better. I admit I'm afraid.
So what are your plans this weekend, gang? I'm in the process of taking some aero-garden shots...

It took a year for the arum to sprout and I think they enjoy cooler temps so this is why it loved my cool bathroom window sill. I did sow some seeds awhile back and had some sprouts but I couldn't remember which pot I had them in. I guess this one waited longer than the others to come up, so this makes it extra special. The berries are very ornamental on jack-in-the-pulpit and they emerge on stalks from the center of the plant.

There's another plant that's not an Arum that someone actually sent me seeds for and told me it was pretty with white flowers but that it reeked in the most revolting way! I googled it at the time and saw pics. Who would want to grow something like that?! Not me. Of course I did not sow the seeds! :ha:
Mine is in the same family but won't be stinky like that at all, JaNan. The berries will be really pretty and they last awhile I'm told.
Keep in mind that there's all kinds of varieties and just because one smells like something dead & rotten, :ha: doesn't mean they all do! ;)

G'night Drew! :waving:
No I didn't see the picture JaNan, but that is just frigging hilarious! :ha:
I think that's why the flowers are so ridiculously huge...because it's meant to be grown way far away where you don't smell the stench!
Too funny! :08:
Here's some info about Arum, JaNan...
Arum is a genus of about 25 species of flowering plants in the family Araceae, native to Europe, northern Africa, and western Asia, with the highest species diversity in the Mediterranean region.
They are rhizomatous, herbaceous perennial plants growing to 20-60 cm tall, with sagittate (arrowhead-shaped) leaves 10-55 cm long. The flowers are produced in a spadix, surrounded by a 10-40 cm long, coloured spathe, which may be white, yellow, brown or purple; some species are scented, others not. The fruit is a cluster of bright orange or red berries.
All parts of the plants are poisonous, [1]containing significant amounts of calcium oxalate as raphides.

Jananas Bananas

There were a few that bloomed this past year here in the U.S. They are in botanical gardens and one of them had it encased in glass because they said the smell would permiate the entire place and be offensive to the guests. :ha:
Very interesting! Do you know what color your flower will be? Or is it a random thing?
The Hollyberry Lady
03-12-2011, 12:04 AM
That really is funny JaNan, but they are very beautiful plants. Why they're are so stinky, no one knows.
Really though, mine won't be the smelly kind, and I don't think it will have any flowers, or at least very insignificant ones. It's the berries that come later that ripen from green to red, that make the plant so attractive & appealing I'm told.
I wish I could remember what those seeds were that someone sent me of the stinky flowers. They said the flowers smelled putrid and might make me sick. Yeah like I'm gonna plant something like that! I threw the seeds away immediately.
If those stinky ones are perennial to my zone, I'd love to plant many of them around the grounds and leave them here for everyone to enjoy when I'm gone! :ha:

JaNan, I'm really sorry about last night...I was in the middle of posting back to you in the aero-garden thread when something really scary happened and I had to drop off abruptly.
It was midnight...I'd just turned my clocks ahead and was in the middle of posting when I heard the loudest kerbooming knock on my door you ever heard in your life. It scared the living hell out of me...and Henry. Whoever it was, they boomed on my door 4 times. I thought it was the police but there were no cruisers in our parking lot so I knew it wasn't. I was totally terrified, to say the least.
I found out from my mom this morning that it was one of the neighbors who was drunk and was at the wrong door...mine!
I am totally angry and upset over it because Henry and I nearly had a heart attack. Who hammers 4 times on someone's door at 1:00 in the morning?! Wait until they hear from me today! http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo2.gif
Needless to say, I was up half the night, worrying and feeling totally afraid...after everything that's gone on here recently. :(
So that's why I signed off in the middle of things, JaNan. Sorry about that. ;)
Hope everyone's having a good Sunday so far. I'm tired and slow-moving today but I took some shots I'll post shortly. I'm kind of excited because last night, (before someone tried to break my door down), I sowed some carnivorous seeds in my aero-garden!!! :goteam:

Gosh thanks, JaNan! :waving:
I really don't feel safe here at all anymore.
The thing is, my mom and I can't really stay with each other on-going because we have to protect our belongings and our apartments. If they know I'm at my mom's place, they'll try to break in here and take my things. None of them have anything at all, so they'd just love to get in here! My mom too, she has things that cost a fortune!
I am just going to keep packing and get the hell out of here as fast as I can. I'm so glad my mom is leaving here soon, but also worried that things will be a nightmare for me when she does. It's impossible though for me to move at the exact time she does...I need an extra couple of months. I really am afraid here though and fear what could be to come. :(
Don't worry though JaNan...I'll be ok. I can call the police, don't forget. ;)

Oh and Tom, I guess I missed your question before about the blueberry shrubs...if they'd fill in. Fertilize them well and they should fill in rather nicely for you, even the 1st season. Depends on the type you're growing though, that'll determine the spacing. Alkaline soil is best so use an acidic fertilizer...like one for rhododendrons. ;)

Thanks Janan! Dean is very friendly. He even gave me alot of different seeds too. So now I just have to wait for these to root. I dont know if I should put them outside or leave them indoors.

Definitely wait until it's warmer and all danger of frost has passed before you put your gorgeous dragon fruit cuttings out, Cam. So nice of Dean to share with you. :D
It'll soon be warm enough to mail plants! I do have some seeds I've been adding to an envelope for both you and JaNan...which you'll see very soon. Glad I waited though because I have many new seeds to add, which you'll see soon in a new thread I might start.
I want to show the new seeds I got yesterday. I showed a few but not all of them...

:woohoonaner: We need to see ALL of them, Sherry!
I don't know about your Dallas area Cameron, but I am sure we are past frost danger here in the central region. Dean had those in his greenhouse all winter, so they have had a good growing environment. I already have mine outside in the backyard though. They are tough boogers!

Thanks Sherry and Janan. Its going to be in the 60s as lows this week and in the 70s as highs. But I know here we can even have frosts and freezes in April. He gave me 2 types, American Beauty and Natural Mystic. I'm soaking some pink hibiscus, lavender datura and some palm seeds. One is a sugar palm and the other is a fishtail palm. I'm going to be busy this spring LOL. I still have your seeds Sherry and now I can probably add a few more since Dean gave me me plenty. He is really kind. Wow Janan you are lucky that the freeze threat has passed. I'm still afraid of planting my passion vines and bananas. I have them on the porch now

I know when we lived in East Texas we would have a frost or freeze almost every year right before Easter. Sounds like your going to have a beautiful day Cameron!
We have been in the 80's for the last several days. All the outside plants are really loving it! In fact some of the inside plants have been moved outside so they can enjoy it too!
Only Sherry can get a Thanksgiving cactus to bloom in March! :woohoonaner: ~J

A friend told me the safest time to plant is after Easter around here, though she planted some flowering plants in her garden lol. It has been in the 80s a couple of times this week but next week its going to be in the upper 70s. I just wish we had some rain. I saw a field of bluebonnets nearby too.

I walked over the yard to check my bluebonnets the other day. They are coming up, but nothing blooming yet. I love their little star shaped leaves, so cute! They aren't near as thick as they were last year because of the dry fall and winter we have had. I wish we could get some rain too!

There are 2 fields across the Collin County Community College that has several types of wildflowers, bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, firewheel, and some other types. Its always beautiful. There are also albino bluebonnets that grow in that field. One of my college professors and some students discovered it. I was surprised that they came up so early. I saw several in Lowes. I love the leaves too, maybe next year I'll grow some. I've only seen a few large concentrations of them around here.

Here are some of mine from last year Cameron. My entire front yard was covered in them. I am looking for that picture right now. The middle picture is a light blue and the last one is an albino. I also had the Indian paintbrushes, verbena, sleepydaisies and sunflowers!

Thanks Sherry and Cameron - those are my very own from my yard! :)
And Bob, not sure if you are still around reading threads, but you may have some Albino bluebonnet seeds in your batch. I marked the plants to be sure and save the seeds - then when the pods ripened I gathered everything up together! DUH! Anyway, the albinos are really rare! ~J
Now I'm even more excited to try them JaNan!:woohoonaner: I'll be saving my own for sure..... with proper labeling!:ha:

If it wasn't for me JaNan, his best friend gardener, he wouldn't know a thing about labelling...nor fertilizing! :ha:

I think the albino gene is sort of a defect. I read a really detailed article on it somewhere. It comes up every year in the same place, but once the flower goes away the pods look like all the others! It has spread a bit now which is exciting. The first year we lived in this house it was only one plant and last year it was three!
I just hope I stored them properly and they are viable for you.
Sherry did your Bluebonnet seeds come from me also? If so, you have the same chances as Bob of getting an Albino. I believe it was three pods that I was able to get from them and there are probably 3 to 6 seeds per pod. ~J

You have a lot of nerve insulting my banana plants like that, oh mister hasn't fertilized his Fig tree in 3 years! :ha:
Keep in mind I haven't mailed your matching male prince holly shrub that goes with your female princess. You kind of need him if you ever want to see berries on your girl!
Be nice, Robert. ;)

Hi Sherry and everyone. I planted my lavender and purple datura seeds today. I'm soaking my pink wisteria seed also and some redbud seeds. I also and soaking 4 types of palms I got from Dean. I have ALOT of seeds for each one. One is Fishtail palm, the other 2 are dwarf sugar palms, and the last is a pretty palm that is native to the solomon Islands

Good luck with everything. ;)
I'm just hanging out tonight, making a late chicken dinner. It won't be ready for a bit though. I only got home a little while ago and I'm starved.
I posted some shots of more seeds I have available in the seed trader's thread. Be sure to check it out Cam, and anything you want...just let me know. :)
I'm mailing to you anyway, so I may as well send you the things you enjoy. I've got a lot of seeds right now and I don't mind sharing.

Yes Dean was incredibly nice. I have so many palm seeds that i dont know what to do with them lol. I hope they germinate. I ate a flatbread sandwich for dinner with some pringles lol. I will definitely check out your seed thread Sherry, though I have so many seeds from Dean right now. I'm wanting the datura to take over parts of my yard.

Take it from me Cam...you can never have too many seeds! :ha:
They can be stored in your fridge for a later time. No pressure though, just if you want something, let me know. Better to share them than keep them to waste. :D
I think it's great you got so many cool seeds from Dean! Share the extra seedlings or sell them. Remember JaNan was saying some lady made a killing selling her extra plants on eBay!!!

Good evening everyone! Did I mention the garlic I planted in containers in the basement has sprouted. It only took about 3 days. They are about 4 inches tall right now. It appears that so far the fungus gnats are staying clear. Though I did see them near the seeds I started for planting outdoors so they may have just moved.
The Hollyberry Lady
03-21-2011, 09:38 PM
I'll include some for you in your envelope, Cameron...thanks for letting me know. ;)
Hi Tom. :03:
Fungus gnats really suck. :(
I use a bottle of dishsoapy water to spray them and the soil. Fortunately I don't have any right now and I'd like to keep it that way. :D

Hi Tom and Sherry. Good evening to you both. Thanks so much Sherry, I just love those plants. I set the dragon fruit outdoors since its been in the 80s lately. Congratulations Tom. I'm growing alot of things from seed this year. I have to plant my 4 types of palm seeds tomorrow. Luckily after spraying with an alcohol solution and then spraying with dishsoap i havent seen many gnats or even white flies. I turned my humidifier on and it seemed to run alot of them off lol

Don't worry too much about sending me seeds...I have more than enough of what I need. I just want to share some with you to build up your seed collection. I have too many and there's no point in them wasting.
Keep in mind that these seeds are all new and fresh and if stored properly in a cool spot they can retain their viability for many years to come. ;)

Thanks so much Sherry. I didnt know that the castor bean was hardy in my area, but I would love to grow that. I have a nice sunny area that doesnt have anything growing on it

Yup, and I have the purple/red variety...it's stunningly gorgeous, Cam! :08:
You realize though that castor bean is poisonous? Even the seeds...so don't eat them! :ha:
The seedlings are adorable when they emerge and look like little pink flamingos! Here were mine...

Those are cute. I remember my mom saying that they are poisonous I'll plant them on the side of my yard which gets partial sun. I like plants that grow super fast. I read that if it gets to 32 degrees then they die so I guess it isnt hardy lol. I hope i could get seeds off of it before it dies. But I would love some Sherry
