I remember that feeling Zac. I Retired from David Weekly Homes, up in the North Texas area in Aug. of 2005. I sold my Acre and House up in Krum Texas and Bought down here in Central Florida, near the Grandchildren. My Peach Tree is in full Bloom, I have started easing my Bananas,( Raja Puri and Cavendish), out of Dormancy and planted twenty Thornless BlackBerry plants,( which are blooming profusely and putting on Fruit). I haven't put my Tomatoes out yet, but the Raised Bed is ready, with Soaker Hose installed, covered with a solid sheet of heavy Linoleum, to hold the moisture up in the Root zone in our Sandy Soil.
My Daughter still lives up in Krum, so I have been getting reports on your severe Weather. Order more Seed Catalog's,LOL...........Hippie

Howdy, Gang!!! :waving:
Hope you guys are keeping well. Been super busy lately but hopefully will have more time soon.
I bought an Aero-Garden grow light kit today and I might start a thread about it. It's still in the box and I have to read the instructions tonight but it looks pretty cool. No soil is used at all and the plants apparently grow twice as fast as they do in a medium. We'll see...
So Hippie...that was pretty funny, but only because I'm not from any of those places. If I was, you might have heard a thing or two from me, and in no uncertain terms either. :ha:
So ah, am I the only one around? I might post for a bit. Leaves are growing on my weeping pussy willow tree now! :goteam:
It's freezing as anything here in London these days but lots of sunshine, thankfully. :)
Chat soon...

I think it won't be any better than growing plants in soil for you. You can only give a plant so much love without killing it. The reason hydroponic kits grow plants better is that it automates a lot of stuff. But a nurturing gardener like you probably won't get bigger plants because your plants are well cared for already.
The Hollyberry Lady
02-10-2011, 10:38 PM
Maybe I'll discover I never want to grow in soil again!
Anyway, thanks Tom! ;) I'm looking forward to checking it out and getting the aero-garden planted. I'll likely be up have the night...gardening in the middle of winter! :ha:
I'll show shots soon but I still gotta read the instruction manual. It says it's easy and you don't have to know a thing about gardening. It comes with seeds and nutrients and everything to get it going right away. Too cool.
So how are things Tom? I've missed chatting with you guys.

Teasing of course, but the truth is I've been busy with many personal matters and wasn't around much to chat. Hope that will change now because I truly have missed you guys.
Yes Dean, it appears pretty quiet around here these days. Where is everyone?

Hey Sherr, good to see you back! Yes, I know what you mean, but then I am qualified. I was Born in Louisiana, raised in Mississippi and having been in Construction most of my life,( with a few years off, to Drive 18 Wheelers), I have been to every State ,( Except Alaska). That being the case, it has been my personal experience that there are a "few" of those characters in every State, but without doubt more prevalent in the ones mentioned. As for "Alaska", while the Pictures are beautiful, I am NOT going anywhere that gets colder than "Fargo North Dakota", LOL. There is nothing between there and the North Pole but a two Strand, Barbed Wire fence, and the top Strand of that is broken,LOL. IF, however,( thanks to "Global Warming"), Zone 4, becomes Zone 9, then Maybe.
BTW, I'm 71 Today!! Wooo Hooo!!!

I've been posting and reading and just kind of hanging out. Just got in a bit ago and thought I'd see who was around.
So I got the kit to be able to start seeds of my own choosing in my new Aero~Garden system. This way I won't have to grow the stuff they choose in their kits, if I don't want to.
So what are you guys up to tonight, or this weekend? Valentine's Day is soon! Anyone going on a hot date? :08:
Jack was telling me he's going out with Sallyanne and he even bought her a new dress for the occasion! :ha: Sounds like love to me. Be sure to take pictures, Jack. ;)
So ah...
I was thinking about moving out of this dump!
For real.
I won't be staying. I just don't know exactly when but I'll be leaving soon. Not to worry though because I'll be sure to move somewhere cool and garden-friendly. :D It's time to be moving on...after 11 years here. It's not the same here though now, with bad owners and bad tenants. Thievery is condoned and supported here. :(
It's still super cold outside and I just cannot wait for Spring so I can get out on my bike again and get my heart back into great shape. I do walk a lot over winter though and like to keep active.
Anyway, if any other night-hawks are up, say 'hi'...

Hey, Gang! :waving:
Here's the post I was in the middle of this morning before we all got zapped. I copied it to my notepad so I wouldn't have to re-type it later...
Yes, I will likely just rent another apartment again, but a much nicer one...maybe on the groundfloor so I can have a couple gardens. If not, I at least want a gigantic balcony that can support my container gardening, and keep the thieves away. Hoping to move somewhere where other people garden too, and things don't get stolen...by your own neighbor!
I won't be doing any gardening here this season...I'm all done with it. Not in my apartment however, and once I move and get situated, things will be different. I may miss out on gardening this year though but there will be many more seasons ahead.
Yup, windows are important to me, Drew. This place has no balcony though so that's why there are so many terrific and huge windows. The windows here are truly a gardener's dream. If I get a place with a balcony, there won't be as many windows, but I'll still find a way to support my indoor growing regardless. That's what light systems are for. I will have a big patio door though to set plants in front of and a bedroom window too. ;)
I'm so excited about my new aero-garden and can't wait for things to sprout. Last night I took out the Thyme pod and replaced it with a blank pod that I added some of JaNan's hot marble pepper seeds to! It'll be way cool to produce some little hot peppers with the herbs. Colorful & pretty as well. :D I'm not a big fan of Thyme, so I'd rather grow peppers.
So how's everyone's Saturday so far? I woke up with a bit of a headache and took a couple tylenol. Hope they kick in soon. It's super sunny here today and I'm enjoying it.
So I have my new aero-garden system set to come on at 8:00 am daily and go off at midnight every night. Things should grow very quickly, no doubt. The basin of water is very warm and bubbly with air so I can see why roots would love it. I think it will be a success.
What are everyone's plans today? I gotta cook some chicken later that's been in my fridge for a day or two, but apart from that I might just hang out. Maybe goof around with some plants and things.
Have a good morning and good afternoon, Gang! :waving:

Hi Sherry its going to be spring-like the rest of the week. I think it made it to 72 today and there a nice breeze. I think mid week its going to be 74. Alot my plants froze back from the single digit temps. My Cherry Laurels and my fringe bush were hit the hardest. Even my sweet autumn sage froze back. I'm going to trim alot of plants tomorrow. I just love that little tree, the catkins are so pretty and unique. I heard they are incredibly easy to root. It still looks attractive, and i love the new growth. My Sunday has been pretty good. I just went to the store twice, once to get groceries and the second time to get some Epsom salt for my plants. How has yours been?
The Hollyberry Lady
02-13-2011, 05:42 PM
My day's been pretty good...mostly just hovering over my new aero-garden, waiting for sprouts! :ha:
I love the weeping willow tree too Cam...it's just so damn interesting and it's always doing something of interest. I am very excited to share it with others so we can all experiment and have fun with it.
I might try to wind a growing and rooted branch around a metal stake to train it to be a tree with a weeping top! How cool would that look?!
Good you got out today for a bit. I got out briefly too, picking up some milk. Now I'm deciding what to make for dinner...
Gonna be around tonight I think, for the most part. Might be sowing a few more pepper seeds and showering a few plants but that's about it.
Anyone ordering or sowing any seeds lately? It's that time of year, to sow your seeds and get your seedlings ready to be planted out this season. I am still growing things even though I won't be doing much outdoor gardening this year. I won't be completely without though and my new place will be great once I get there.
It's kind of mild here today and the snow's melting just a bit. I think next week might be warmer still.

I saw your aero garden on Plant swap. I have been curious about those. I think that would be so cool to see. I'm going to look for a persimmon tree this year. I'm really interested in growing one. My mom had one in her yard when she was a kid and she said the fruit tastes really good. I just love the fall color too

I'm just listening to some tunes Howard & Mitchel posted in the music thread. I have a couple windows open. This song is French but it's kinda cool...
So yeah, I have seeds for persimmons and can send them to you!!! :08: The fruit is an acquired taste and it's not really my thing but I'd be glad to give them to you, Cam. ;)
I'm really glad I bought the aero-garden. I've always wanted to get into hydroponic growing, even if just on a small scale for now. I guess people who have had them say they are excellent so we'll see...
Apparently germination is guaranteed so if the seeds don't pop, they'll replace them. I'm hoping to see some little green plants coming up very soon. Cool you saw the thread on PlantSwap...there's one here too! :ha:
So I guess it's just us Cam. Did you have dinner yet? I gotta throw something together soon.

Oh wow how interesting. Wow what seeds dont you have LOL. I would love to grow some persimmons from seed, I'm curious about the fruit. I have read that the fruit tastes better after the first frost. I'm glad to see you got the aero garden I hope you are very successful. I may ask for one on my birthday lol. I had some grilled sausage and potato salad for dinner.

02-13-2011, 06:34 PM
Mmmmm...that sounds so yummy Cam. Wish I had come to your house for dinner. I have a feeling JaNan is having something delicious tonight too.
So in the instructions the aero-garden came with, it says it's foolproof. I just hope I don't have any mold problems because someone mentioned on another site that they did. Things are very wet, so I take the lids off the pods daily for 10 minutes to make sure air circulates and discourages mold from growing. So far so good...
I hope you get one for your birthday, and JaNan too. It would be cool if we all posted shots of our growings in the aero~garden thread! What would you grow in it, Cam?
No problem about the persimmons seeds...I'm pretty sure they're viable too. ;) I gotta get your mailing address in pm real soon...

It was pretty good. I had made some sausage rigatoni the other day. I grilled the italian sausage and sauteed some garlic. Oh wow i didnt think of that. I dont know what I would grow in it, but I would love to grow something edible lol. I'll have to get your mailing address too. I'll send you mine in a pm. Its been incredibly dry here. My face and hands have been peeling alot. In need to get my plant mister and just spray myself LOL
The Hollyberry Lady
02-13-2011, 07:11 PM
Too funny, Cam! :ha:
Yeah, I really hate winter for the dryness and itchiness. I just put a whack of moisture cream on so I'm good for about an hour! That's about the truth of it too.
Ok so I threw some beef chunks in a skillet with some sweet onions...a late dinner but better than none at all. I'll make some rice and broccoli to go with it.
Growing edibles in the aero-garden is appealing to me too but I might try flowers sometime just to see how they do. If it really is as great as they say it is, I might buy a system for a friend too...or get another one for myself! ;)
There's an actual aero-garden forum and some members have more than one system with many things growing in them. It's way cool looking at some of the pictures.
There's smaller more inexpensive ones also...mine isn't the only unit. There's also another one that's twice as big as mine is and it's the most pricey but still reasonable.
Good luck...hope you get one! :D
I'll send ya my address later on but thanks for sending yours for now. I'll write it down in the morning.

Same here, i have a humidifier but my plants are blocking the path to it lol. I love sweet onions. That sounds so good. The aero gardens I always see in the sales papers are too expensive for me, thats why i look over them lol. I didnt know there were inexpensive ones. I wonder if you could grow strawberries in one. I definitely will ask my family for one, if not for my birthday then for christmas lol. Thanks again Sherry
The Hollyberry Lady
02-13-2011, 07:30 PM
You can grow strawberries in your aero-garden Cam, yes! :08:
There is a smaller inexpensive aero-garden for something like 69 or 89 bucks. I think it grows 2 or three plants in it, but I can't be certain. Worth looking into though. I'd love the small one so I could add a tiny garden to some small dark corner somewhere. These things are way cool.
Yeah sweet onions are awesome. Do you have room to grow some? If so, I have a variety called "onion candy" that's literally as sweet as candy! I could send you some of them too.
Gotta stir the beef and onions and add the sweet red pepper I decided to add to it also...

Willow87
02-13-2011, 07:41 PM
$69 is expensive to me LOL. I'll just ask for a plant on my birthday LOL. I mainly cook with sweet onions. I had some in my veggie garden at my other house, but onions dont do too well here in Texas, at least for me LOL.
The Hollyberry Lady
02-13-2011, 07:51 PM
Yes, I suppose it still is pricey, you're right. I'm just so plant obsessed that I can't help but spend so much on anything to do with gardening. My mom thinks I'm nuts but you gardeners understand, I know you do.
I plan on getting a place next that has inclusive hydro so I can run as many light systems as I want, on their dime! :ha:
Not that I really pay that much now but with air conditioning in the summer combined with grow lights, it can get a little up there. It's 5 bucks a day to run an air conditioner in Toronto!
So my dinner is coming along. I just got the peppers into the pan with beef & onions & olive oil. Might add some portabellos at the end too. Now that I'm cooking, I'm getting into it.
I enjoy cooking. :D
So tomorrow is Valentine's Day! :bananas_j What's everyone doing?

I enjoy baking more than cooking meals but i do enjoy cooking. I'm not doing anything for Valentines is just another day to me LOL

I'll be doing something but not sure what just yet. My mom has always made a big deal of Valentine's Day so I know she'll be on the phone early with a surprise or two up her sleeve.
She's doing a lot better now because she got approved for this really great apartment with a whirlpool, sauna, and outdoor pool! She's even got a dishwasher! She's moving on May 1st, but I likely won't be until more like August or September 1st...not sure just yet. It's a lot to pack up 11 years!
I'm going to try to get into the same building my mom will be in or definitely super close by. We'll be so much happier once we blow this popstand! :ha:
So I gotta go tend to the rice...things are nearly ready. I'm starved!

:waving: Evening Guys!
Dinner sounds yummy Sherry!!!
Cameron I have two persimmon trees at our place in Elkhart. I will look around for babies coming up for you if you want. I just usually don't have very good luck when I dig babies up. Even when DH does it for me we always seem to sever the tap roots on stuff - I don't know how deep the roots on persimmons run as I have never tried to dig one up though. If not I could probably find you some seeds too. I don't know how many varieties there are but your Mom might really like an Elkhart one! :ha:
Are yours from Canada Sherry? That would be an interesting grow study!
How's everyone tonight?

Hi Janan. How have you been? This weather was wonderful today. I would love to have some persimmon babies. My mom said she had one in her yard when she was a kid and she loved the taste of the fruit. I'm always bad at digging plants up. But I did have some luck digging up some viburnum saplings. The smallest one is the only one that looks ok. the other 2 didnt make it i think. She is mainly afraid of the web worms that they get but I told her I would spray the tree if i got one. I havent seen any in this area but she said there were alot in Elkhart.

Hi JaNan! :waving:
Yes, a change of scene is just what the doctor ordered, Cam. It will be so much better once we're out of here. I know everyone will be really disappointed and shocked not to see my gardens this season. I will be packing instead of gardening.
Looking so forward though, to where I might end up. I know it will be nice, and no doubt suitable for my needs. I'd love to get a groundfloor apartment so I can plant a Holly shrub outside my patio. ;)
Cool, you've got some persimmons for Cam, JaNan. :D
Dinner was scrumptious or as Zac would say...'scrump-didly-icious'!!! :ha:
On a sad note...
I found out today that my dad's cousin has cancer again...lung. She had cancer twice before but beat it. She doesn't want kemo this time because she said it makes you totally sick and nauseous all the time. Her hair and nails fell out too. She's taking the cancer pills but she doesn't want anymore operations and just wants her last years to have quality...
I suppose it's a personal decision but I feel so bad for her. I guess she's really depressed and is taking anti-depressants too. :( The doctors give her 3-5 years! I am kinda in shock and sad about it. My mom is too.
: (
Sorry to bum everyone out and we can still carry on...I just wanted to mention it. ;)
I'm going to sow a pot of mixed peppers, but with the taller ones in the back and the shorter types in the front. One of my most favorite pots to grow in summer is one filled with many different colorful and ornamental hot peppers. I can grow them inside easily and take them to my new patio or balcony in the late summer or early fall. :)
Sounds like a plan to me.
What will you guys be sowing next?

Sherry what can you tell me about starting Kiwi seeds. I just ate one and pulled some seeds aside. Do you need to plant them fresh or let them dry out? I haven't looked anything up on them yet. I figured I should go to the source! :ha: Maybe you should write a book! I would buy one! ~J
The Hollyberry Lady
02-13-2011, 10:42 PM
You might have to cold stratify them for 3 months in a moist medium but I believe you have to have a male and female plant to get fruits.
You might be better off just working with cuttings. My knowledge of kiwi is general, but I'd sure like to learn more about it. It's such a cool fruit to grow, so good luck JaNan. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. :(
Maybe I better hold off on that book! :ha:

That's A OK, we can't expect you to know everything about everything! :ha: I have seen people in the area that have grown them with success and they sell them at the nurseries which is a good sign too. I thought I would give it a shot, what the hay! I did know I have to have a male and female for fruit. Tasty little boogers, though I peel mine - the hairs tickley scratch my throat and I don't like that feeling.
Our weather was beautiful here too Cameron! It was sunny and warm though very windy. I am doing much better since it has warmed up. :)

All of my kiwi sprouts died =( but i let them dry out and then put them on a moist paper towel and put them in the fridge, but then I was worried it would be too cold so i put them in a sunny area, and within a couple of days they developed roots. so then i transplanted the root seeds and they grew a few leaves and then died LOL.

Hi Sherry, JaNan, and Drew
I think i left them in the fridge for 2-3 days. I took them from the fruit and rinsed them off and dried them for a day. I guess i got impatient too lol. After I kept them in the fridge those few days i just thought maybe the warmth from the sun would help them sprout and it did. I dont know where I went wrong after that lol they just started dying off one by one. Drew that may have been what went wrong. But i let them dry out before i watered again, they shriveled up into nothingness =(

Nothing wrong with buying your own cake, is there? It's an ice cream one from Dairy Queen and I even got them to write on it. :D
It's in my freezer but I'll get a shot of it soon. It's not a huge one but kind of a smaller one, shaped like a heart.

Yes, I'm pretty excited about my aero-garden and last night I implemented a few last minute ideas. That aero-garden site is totally amazing and the pictures of some of the stuff people are growing, are totally amazing. One lady had a crop of tomatoes that was enormous!
I also like it that there's people there that are using the systems and that know all the problems I might encounter and what to do about them. It's a great support and I'm learning tons. :D

Hi Janan! How are you? I'm sorry to hear about your husband not feeling well. I hope he gets better soon. I was worried about the passion vines because the leaves were pale green and the veins were dark green. So I took a chance and added a little fertilizer and the leaves became dark green again. I'm also putting epsom salt in the water and I think that has also helped a little. I hope you have a great night Janan =)

I think the mint sprouts are adorable too, JaNan! I can't wait to smell the mint when it's growing...
Have you been following in the aero-garden thread? I feel bad for that guy who says his is in his storage trailer! I know if he joined the aero-garden site he could learn how to use it better and find out what happened because so many people have done really well with them.
I hope my Alpine Strawberries look as nice as this one guy's did, who grew and harvested them. It was truly amazing to see the pictures. Many others also had tomatoes and peppers everywhere!
Good luck with greening up your caerulea vine, Cameron. I just add a bit more nitrogen to my plants when they're not so green, but not too much if it's a flowering plant, or you'll have all leaves and no flowers!
Your vine looks nice though, Cam. I like those chairs too! ;)

Well please make an exception Cam, so I can look back on my b-day thread and see you there too. ;)
I am going to spend some time today sorting through some old stuff I don't want anymore and throwing stuff out I don't want to pack and take with me. I have tons to do before I can move and want to get an early start.
Sorry to hear about your banana corms, JaNan. That's so disappointing. :( I hope you will be able to save your corms in future and know that they'll be safe until the following spring.
I was making some tea and posting and now the phone is ringing but whoever it is, they can leave a voicemail and I'll get back to them later.
Too funny about the cake, JaNan. I've been eating it everyday. Had a big slice last night even, right after I came back from a big walk. I don't like winter to make me lazy and inactive. I can feel spring in the air and it's turned kinda mild here. I can't wait to get on the bike and will be again soon. :D
So I was up half the night reading that farmer's almanac and figuring out calculations. A bit tired today but I'll be ok. That book is so cool though and very useful to me. The weather has always been a big interest since I took up gardening especially, but even before that.
Anyway, enough babbling. Wonder where Hippie is...

Sherry I have a question related to the AeroGarden. Do you want me to ask over in that thread? ~J

Thanks Janan, it is the thornless variety. it also it an upright type so it doesnt need support for the most part. I think the berries are medium sized and very sweet so I'll have to be the judge of that lol. I have a few of the wild variety in my backyard but the birds always eat the berries before i can pick them. Its a 2 year old plant so it should produce this year

OK I have been looking at the link you posted for the AeroGarden growers. My question is this - the liquid nutrients - can you use a regular liquid fertilizer? I did see a post over there that someone had used a small amount of Miracle Grow with good results, but could not find anything else mentioned about this and I have gone several pages deep. Also, they use a lot of unfamiliar acronyms in the postings. I don't know what they mean.
I told my sister that I thought I would finally be getting one (I told her about yours) and she will be getting one soon too, I am certain. :) I told her to look on Craigslist and the classifieds so she is watching those. She found one (a three holer) for $25 and corresponded with the seller and they said they would accept her offer of $20 for it. Anyway, she went to the public place (with her husband) and the lady never showed up. She wants to go with a small one to see if she likes it before investing in the larger unit. So, the deal is most of the "used" units have already used the seed and nutrients that came with them new. I know you can buy the baskets and seed sponges very reasonably and can sow your own seeds. But the official "AeroGarden" nutrients seem very expensive.
Your thoughts on this please. Thanks! ~J

I haven't unpacked a lot of things because until Greg retires from the military we may get transferred again. My logic is just leave them packed so I won't have to do it again. Especially the fragile breakable stuff. It's a pain with the bubble wrap and newspaper. I know that sounds lazy, but like you we were in our last home in East Texas for over 11 years. It was overwhelming to say the least.

no worries...I answered in the other thread...
I'm overwhelmed about packing too...it's a lot. I just do a few things each day though so it's not so much at once. I hope to mostly be packed before summer even gets here.
Not sure where I'm going just yet, but it'll be nice, I know that. I won't settle for just anywhere.
Hoping to grab a late lunch here shortly and some ice cream cake! :ha: It seems like I'll never get through it all. Just wait until their birthdays, when I buy them a 20 person cake too!
The sun's out today which is kind of nice.

Ours was a fast move too. Greg was under a deadline to be in a certain place at a certain time. I think it was less than 30 days.
Cameron I agree with Sherry - your Mother has every reason to be proud of you. You are a great young man.
I have a tendency to skip read for some reason. I have to go an re-read the postings in the threads several times and have noticed that I miss stuff. I don't intentionally not answer questions - I have accidentally skipped them because one thing is blaring in my mind to get stated. Tunnel reading I guess!!! :ha: Yeah that's it! ~J

Not much planned today either but the sun is shining so I'll likely take a walk somewhere, just to get some air and sunshine. Likely be good for me, after how much I had to drink last night.
So much for a couple drinks...try four! That's a real lot for me, and I'm in bad shape today from it. :ha:

So how's everyone's Monday going?
I just started a birthday thread to wish CoolRobby a happy b-day. He just got an aero-garden too and had pictures posted this morning on the picture bar. Hope you guys will chime in...
After all, nobody wants a birthday thread with only one post! :(
So my aero-garden seeds are popping like crazy! Everything is up but the strawberry seeds. Those were planted later though and take longer...but it will still be interesting to see how long they take in this unit. Here's some of my peppers. Bolivian Rainbow...

I won't blab JaNan's good news...even though I'm dying to! I just can't wait to see your pictures though JaNan, and...well I guess I better leave it at that until she announces her own exciting news. I think tomorrow is the big day, isn't JaNan? ;)
So anyway, I got some more packing done today...I could be moving sooner than later. Once you get at it, things get packed pretty fast. I'm getting more boxes tomorrow.
Thought I'd pop in and say 'hi' and see if anyone's around...

I'm well...how are you Cam?
The sun is shining brightly here today and I was just watering and fertilizing some of my plants...showering some too.
Hope you guys have a great Tuesday. Yesterday was a civic holiday for Canada...Family Day. It was President's Day in the US.
The greenhouse called today to tell me they will not be getting in the 1 gallon pots of Gaultheria Procumbens after all, but rather smaller ones in 4" containers that will be much cheaper in price.
I initially ordered 2 in the 1 gallon pots but now I'm getting 4 because they're not so big. I'm also sending one pot to a spoiled garden friend...and I think you guys know just who! :ha:
So anyway, the sun is making me want to do things and maybe even go out for a bit. I gotta get some more boxes for packing too.

I'm doing ok Cam...just trying to get 11 years packed up. I wanna get it done early so I can be available to take the place of my choice as soon as the warm months arrive.
I picked up more boxes and some glade candles...one's called "creamy custard and blushing apple" and the other is "fresh berries & wild raspberries". They smell up the whole room when you burn one. I enjoy them and have a "french vanilla" one also. ;)
Tonight I'm making a nice dinner for my mom & I, but you'll have to check out the dinner thread to find out what.
So Cam, how come you don't post in other threads...being a gardener and all? You should. You do sometimes post in the "what'cha got sprouting" thread though, so that's cool.

It is the Rajapuri.
Sounds really neet with the variegated lemon-lime and green colors.
It only gets a 7-9' pseudostem according to the seller.

Well Sherry, I hope they aren't gloating! You'll take them next time.
Cameron, citrus are really easy to grow from seed. You can always get them started and prune them or just plant seeds from dwarf trees maybe - I don't know but Sherry can tell you how. I saw an old post of hers on another website and have been able to sprout citrus ever since. It's fun too! Everyone is always so impressed that you can grow a citrus from a seed. I now have Kumquats, tangerines, Mexican limes, red and white grapefruit, any that have seeds. Start all you can and sell them on Craigslist up there to get you some extra money for your AeroGarden! :)

I think I will try growing lemons from seed again. I had some sprout but after a month they just died. Thats a good idea though. I think i have a few lemons left over
Jananas Bananas
02-24-2011, 09:39 PM
Here's my Kumquats sprouting. I think I have started 7 so far and 5 are showing signs of bursting! :) They are thorny little boogers though! I think they are a small tree - at least the ones I got these from are. These are Meiwa. I don't know how true they are to the parent, any citrus, but just the accomplishment is a reward I think.

Wow Janan! Those are so cute. I got 2 seeds from a lemon and I'm soaking them now
Jananas Bananas
02-24-2011, 09:51 PM
Did you just now get them out of the lemon? All I do is rinse them off real good and stick them in the medium right away. Sherry says that is the trick with citrus - it has to be fresh. Every one I have done following her advice has popped for me 100 percent! Ask her when she comes back on, so I don't screw up her words. But I haven't gone wrong following her advice yet! :)
That is one reason I never order seeds off eBay anymore (citrus). Once they dry out they are dead. ~J

Hey JaNan and Gang, All of my Citrus has been Grafted onto a "Sour Orange",( Trifolate) Root stock. I confess my ignorance as to why, but could explain your previous failure Cameron. sounds like something I should check into.
Sherr, as an old man who has had a "Butt Kickin" or two in my time, I have found each experience a learning one,LOL. Giv- em hell kiddo!!

Jananas Bananas
02-24-2011, 10:03 PM
Hi Hippie!!! Have you been planting more citrus and blueberries? :waving:
Probably grafted because it is a sturdy proven stock - usually the stock is not very good fruit so they graft the tastier fruit to it and get the best of both worlds that way. There are many professional nursery men on here that could answer all your questions about that stuff. I have never tried grafting though so that is just a tidbit from reading. ~J

I read about planting them fresh. I just took them out of the lemon and set them in some warm water. I'll definitely plant them in the morning. Hi Hippie, I got the seeds to develop 3 leaves and then the leaves started turning brown and then the whole plant wilted and died. I had them in a south facing window and kept the soil moist. This was several years ago. When i took them from the lemon all were actually rooting inside the lemon. I planted them and they came up but when they died i just didnt want to grow citrus anymore lol. I didnt see any bugs or fungus. So I dont know what caused all of them to die. I had 4 sprouts in one pot

Thanks JaNan, I will have to check them out, once I have time to find my way around the Site. Yes, I put in ten more Thornless Blackberries. I also Gave a Neighbor a Raja Puri "Pup" and Pruned out one other, to transfer that energy to the primary Plant. My Bamboo is starting to throw lots of new Shoots and I went today and bought some bulk Fertilizer, now I have to do the Math to get the relative amounts of each to end up with the strength's I need for various applications...........Hippie

Cameron, there is a lady down here that sprouts her seeds from all her grocery store fruit and then sells them on Craigslist. She usually has sold out of everything by the start of Summer. Avocado, mango, pomegranate, oranges, lemon, kiwi, I know there are others, but I can't think of all of them. When I see her post I will copy it. I want to say at least a dozen different fruit. She charges $12 to $20 each for them. ~J

Too bad you aren't a little closer Hippie. I always give away horse and chicken poop (I never run out - they always make more :ha:). It makes wonderful fertilizer and it is free! There are a lot of guys on here in Florida. I am sure you can find some that are close to you that would give you wonderful guidance. They usually post in the more technical threads. Maybe you can look on the map and see where they are in relation to where you are. Click on the map tab above and see what you find. ~J

Cameron, you have a green thumb. You wouldn't be able to get them started if you didn't. Sherry told me to always use sterile soil for the babies - that it will make or break them. See my babies die on me too, so she is guiding me and hopefully I can get them to adulthood! :p

The girls would have stayed later but it's a weeknight so we had to put off my arse-kicking until the weekend. :ha:
Yeah, citrus seeds, or at least certain ones, are better sown when fresh, for sure. ;) Some people say that some citrus plants grown from seed might not produce fruits! That in fact cuttings or nursery trees are the better way to go to ensure fruit. Not sure if I believe it though, so we'll see.
I guess there are several types of Kumquats because my seedlings were definitely not prickly, JaNan. I wonder what kind you've got. I heard when Kumquats are grown from seed, they produce fruit within 2-3 years! I sprouted a bunch of them last season and Key Lime too.
Bob sent me cuttings for a dwarf key lime fruit tree and they've now taken off for me. His tree even has little limes on it right now! Wish mine did, but soon enough it will.
Hi Hippie! :waving:
You disappeared for a bit after your birthday...and you missed mine! It was a good one but too much ice cream cake! :ha: 29 again, of course!
So I'm feeling kind of ticked that I got the shaft in chess tonight. :( I'm usually the one to kick butt, but I was off tonight...and I think my one girlfriend was moving the pieces when I wasn't looking! :ha: Cheating...that's the only way they can beat me. ;)
So I hope you guys are having a good night. I was going to post some stuff in my old farmer's almanac thread but the facts I wanted to post won't be relevant until midnight when it's officially the 25th of February. I had to delete my post until then. :(

Thanks Janan and Sherry. I have a little bit of seed starting soil left so I guess I'll use that. Would it be alright if i added epsom salt to the water for the seeds?
The Hollyberry Lady

Seedlings and seeds can be sensitive and you don't want to kill them with too much of anything, Cam. ;) I might hold off on the epsom salts for a bit...at least until things sprout and get growing a little.

Sherry my Kumquat seeds are Meiwa - or at least that's what the tags all said. The trees that they came from had thorns. I was reading about them the other night and they say they are easy to grow from fruit and they will fruit and be true to the parent. From seed to fruit in 3 years, which is petty quick considering. It listed about five or six kinds at that website. My limes are thorny too. They are spread out and not hard to avoid. My roses are much thornier.

Yeah, we sure do know the signs of a crash. I wonder why there's so many problems now. :(
I found it exciting when I saw your picture JaNan, of that banana seed. It's sure looks hopeful to me. I'd be bursting if I was you. If it pops, which I think it will, maybe you should grow the little guy on for awhile in the system, to give him a good start ??? I bet banana plants would love to grow in there!
Let us know the very day that cutie sprouts for you. How are your other seeds doing...any look like they might pop soon...like the basil?
I'm so pleased with how my little plants are coming along, after only a short 2 weeks! It's too cool. I thinned some of the pepper seedlings so there's only one per pod now. Stuff will grow better when there's only one plant in each hole.
Funny, because my soil-sown pepper seeds are still not up yet and it's been over 10 days...but they popped in my aero-garden in 5!!!
Good luck with that Musa seed, JaNan! :goteam:

What did you do with the ones you thinned out? Did you pot them up or just chunk them? I'm not a good thinner outer either! :ha: Like my pruning skills! :ha: I think your little babies are beauties, and I have been so impressed with how fast they shot up.
I think the basil is swollen and possibly the passi, but I am not positive and I don't see any change in the mint at all. Right now I am so tickled with the banana seed I don't care if anything else happens as long as that one does! :goteam: Yeah, I am going to keep it there as long as I can. I will have to tell you the story about them. :) ~J

I just chucked the extras but did pot up all of the extra hot marble ones since they're new. I want to grow a lot of them this year, even indoors! ;)
I don't allow myself to be controlled by my plants...I control them. I sowed the seeds and raised them so I make sure they grow the way I want them to, or unfortunately it they can't keep up...I yank them!
Sounds cold, but it's why I have such nice plants, because I don't let the ugly ones that are barely making it, stick around.
Mind you, I will try to revive a plant, but if I see it's weak and too tempermental...out it goes!
Quite honestly I can't stand it when people let their gardens become over-run with crappy dwindling plants because they have this unhealthy notion that they are hurting them to throw them away. As you watch them pathetically dwindle from year to year however, you know it's a shame not to throw them away and put them out of their misery!
Don't be afraid to prune your plants and vines. They enjoy it. In nature they get pruned naturally by munching animals, and weather. Pruning will make the plant more dense and full...as opposed to tall & spindly. :(
I like to prune the tops off my geranium seedlings too, so they'll be fuller in the long run, with more blooms. I "top" a lot of my seedlings in fact, for the same reasons. ;)
We must discuss things in the aero-garden thread so others can learn and share our experience, JaNan. That is way too friggin' cool about that banana seed. You may have found the best banana-seed-sprouting system yet!!! :08:
I think you should post that shot where it can be seen by everyone. Post it in the "what'cha got sprouting" thread too. It's just too cool. I bet a lot of members will be out rushing to buy an aero-garden very soon! :ha:
I'm sorry I took so long to reply...I was posting on the aero-garden site too. I really enjoy that site a lot. So inspiring.
Yes, I am amazed with how fast things have sprouted and are now growing. Hydroponic gardening really is faster and better...I can tell. I added more nutrients to my water basin tonight. I'm big on feedings and may adjust things where that's concerned, depending on the performance of the plants.
Ok, I'll quit now before I write a novel...

:ha: My plants get tough love here. Just ask them! :ha: I give things three tries (if I want to grow it very badly). But three strikes and your out. I won't try it again. I often try things that aren't supposed to grow here, so it is my fault really, but I am hard headed. :o And I lose interest in different things too, so if that happens they tend to get neglected and I usually kill them. Or I go in cycles or phases.
This AeroGarden is a whole new adventure for me, so I am just in your shadow. I will be asking you a lot of questions I'm sure of that.
I have never really had to thin out seedlings before. For one I have always planted them far enough apart and they have always thinned themselves out by dying!
I have had decent luck sprouting banana seeds though, just not good luck keeping them alive till they were grown up. Here's two links I was telling you about that I started last year.

I like thinning JaNan, because it allows you to keep only the strongest & most vigorous plants. You don't necessarily have to throw the thinnings away but don't let yourself become over-run either.
Keep in mind JaNan, this is my 1st time using the aero-garden too, and I really don't know how it will all turn out for me. The strawberry seeds are still not up. :(
Gonna take the bus over to the mall in a couple hours, to grab a few things at the grocery store...like milk.

Totally gorgeous, Cam!!! :goteam:
I was logged on but I've been away for hours. I had to go pick up some stuff for my mom and I. There were some really good food deals today that I cashed in on.
It's wet and slushy outside though....yuck! http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo2.gif
I think your flower is so pretty, Cam! You must be real tickled. It's so cheerful to have flowers in wintertime. I love them.
So how's everyone's Sunday going? Who's around? I'm munching on a couple of Mike & Ike jellybeans and checking out my aero-garden. Still no strawberry sprouts and I'm getting a bit worried...but that's just me.
Henry is saying "mommy loves you, little bird" right now! He's too funny. He also has learned to "quack" like a duck...3 times in a row! :ha: It's absolutely adorable. I can tell he's ready to learn another big phrase...
He's very intelligent and he needs me to teach him new sounds and words on a regular basis. He's an expert mimic and I haven't stumped him yet. My aunt's budgie, "Willie" mimics her dog's bark!!! I've been on the phone with her and heard the bird doing it.
Henry loves to "talk" on the phone also! Really though, when my mom calls he comes and sits on my shoulder and talks or chirps into the mouthpiece. My mom of course sings to him while I hold the phone to his ear. He totally loves it. He just adores her and is captivated by her...even on the phone. He knows it's her by her voice and he gets very excited and chirps and flies around looking at me to let me know how excited he is.
What a cutie. ;)
Gonna sow a few more seeds shortly, I think.

Star gazer lilies will be gorgeous, Cam! :08:
Yeah, birds are way too cool...so lovable & affectionate as well. I can't imagine life without my little Henry. He dove into a bowl of salad today and had a carrot string hanging out of his beak! I tried to get a shot but no such luck. :( It was cute though.
So, I'm just hanging out sowing more pepper seeds tonight. I know how great they grow indoors and they can be something for me to enjoy growing this summer while I'm packing. I'll be eating tons of spicy food, I can see that!

I can't wait too, Cam. Bet they'll be great! ;)
I just sowed more pepper seeds tonight...black pearl, fluorescent purple, black scorpion tongue, numex centennial, and turkish cayenne.
They're sown in soil though, not my aero-garden. Did you see JaNan's fat & swollen banana seed in her A-G?! It's way cool. :08:
Seems pretty quiet here lately, eh? Wonder where everyone is...
So I thinned the pepper seedlings in my A-G, and now it's just one plant per pod...the way it should be. Things are growing along nicely. I've even got my mom considering buying one for herself! :ha: She loves the idea of harvesting fresh herbs from it, with no messy soil to contend with. Me too. It sure is a joy to use it and fun to anticipate the results.

I wish I could too, but I'll be moving this season, not gardening! :(
I will be gardening inside though...always. Once I move, I'll be gardening outdoors again too, so no worries. It's kind of why I wanted to buy the aero-garden...to make up for me not gardening in the grounds this year. You honestly couldn't pay me to do anymore gardening here...I'm all done.
So I am amazed at how fast things grow in that thing...like summertime! It seems to be all that it's cracked up to be, which is very good. Wonder if JaNan had any sprouts in hers yet....like maybe the basil.

It was nice to finally get a correct name for it. It was driving me crazy, because there are so many hybrids and alot of them look the same lol. I went outside today and my peach tree has blooms on it and my daylilies and cannas are coming up too. There maybe a light freeze tonight, so I'm going to have to cover up the magnolia at least.
