I guess I should have taken a picture of her little "before" feet - they were curled up and she was trying to stand up and walk on her knuckles. It wasn't my idea Sherry, I actually researched on the internet and read suggestions from dimes to duct tape. These are tiny tiny little chicks and a dime would have been to heavy. Duct tape would have hurt when I took it off, so I thought band aids. If you can correct this before the bones harden it can be fixed permanently. So far so good. I just needed something to straighten out and separate her little toes. Some die hard chicken people would have probably culled this little one, but I am not one of those.

They all are doing well so far Cameron and Drew. Bob I'm thinking that would be an awfully lot of bandaids and they would just fall off when you wore them out into the snow! :) Zac your friend is correct. How many other pets can give you breakfast? :ha:

Wanna see my new phone I got today?...

My old one was nothing but static anymore...Bob can even attest to that! :ha:

I'm sure glad to have something functional again. The orange button on the right-hand corner of the phone is the speaker phone option. ;)

I was at the mall just as the sun was setting...

Good morning Sherry! Thats a damn fine phone you have there, love the large #'s. I hope it is not like a similar one I had, that the Speak into thing y was so light that the weight of the Cord would pull it off of the hook, every time the cord fell off the edge of the Table. That one didn't last long,( it was one of those straight from China to Wal-Mart specials), that my Wife couldn't resist. I,( on the other hand), had no trouble taking it right back to them.

Lovely Sun Set,( If I could have blocked out the foreground View),LOL. We Central Floridians don't do Snow well at all. In fact I had to go get a Sweat Shirt on to look at it,LOL

Have a great day Kiddo!!

Too funny, Bob! :ha: Not into white phones but might have bought a pink one if they had it! ;)

LoL Oldhippie! :D

I bought this phone to get away from all that...crackles, static, and outright disconnections! I've sure been enjoying this new one a lot. It's a heavy phone so no worries, and the speaker phone works fairly well on it too.

I've already got all my numbers programmed into it...it holds 65 of them in the directory, plus it has a 10 number speed-dial memory as well, & an extra emergency button for 911. It pretty much has all the features you'd want a phone to have so I'm pretty glad I replaced my old one.

Thanks, Tom! :waving: I didn't notice that about the smiley until you said it. Cool. :)

Thanks for stopping in and saying 'hi' everyone. Nice to hear from you guys. Hope you're having a great Sunday.

We are expecting more snow here. Maybe another 12 inches friday and another 6 inches next tuesday.

Temps got a little warmer today at around 30F but are expected to drop again over the next few days.

And only 25 days until pitchers and coaches show up for spring training!

The Hollyberry Lady
01-20-2011, 12:07 AM
Spring can't come soon enough for me, Tom! :goteam:

I hope it comes early this year. Tired of cold temps and snow. :(

How's your lemon tree doing?

: )

tbaleno
01-20-2011, 12:13 AM
Doing good. There is a blossom about to open. I want to repot it into a bigger pot, but I want to make sure it is growing well first. So, I'll probably do that in a few weeks.

I'm curious if when the snow melts I find some holly bushes have taken root. I doubt it but you never know. Nature always has a way of surprising you.

The Hollyberry Lady
01-20-2011, 12:40 AM
That's right Tom, you really never know when it comes to gardening, and where one person has had failure, another person may have success. ;)

Many gardening 'experts' told me I couldn't do this, and I couldn't do that, but I had nothing but total success when I tried a number of things I was discouraged from doing.

Growing melons on a trellis for instance...

I once had this know-it-all neighbor/gardener who insisted it could not be done and that I was foolish to even try it. Not only did I successfully grow the melons on the trellis, but on the day of harvest she came running over loudly saying enthusiastically..."Are those melons on that trellis"?! (as if she didn't know :ha:). I couldn't resist giving her one of the 8 I had and she never questioned my gardening after that and was in fact asking me tips on how to grow certain things. :)

I think gardeners should experiment and try things...most especially things that people tell them cannot be done. It just might work and you won't know unless you try. There's no absolutes in gardening...it's all about trial and error. Experience.

The best gardening tip I ever got to this day, was "Stop Listening To Other Gardeners"!!! :ha:

So cool about your lemon tree, Tom! :08: Bob was telling me about his little dwarf keylime tree and that it has actual little limes on it already, indoors. I saw a pic and I have cuttings from the same plant, that are now rooted.

I hope you get to eat some lemons from your tree, Tom. How cool would that be! :08:

Thanks for popping in and posting. I'm hoping you might see some holly sprouts in Spring. Small holly trees can be bought for under 10 bucks in Spring but it depends on the variety and size. I can get 'blue boy/girl' shrubs about a foot tall for around 10 bucks each but they're inferior to 'blue prince/princess' so I only want one pair, not many of them.

Alright, guess I've rambled enough. It's been awhile! :D

I want one with traditional holly leaves. Or do the leaves always start out oval and then grow to by holly leaf shapped?

The Hollyberry Lady
01-20-2011, 12:53 AM
If you like that traditional Holly leaf look, you might just love "Blue Boy/Girl", Tom. They are the first of the Blue Holly series and the originals. They are the traditional Christmas Holly and the leaves are very pointed.

"Blue Prince/Princess" are the hybrid offspring (children) of "Blue Boy/Girl" and the leaves are more oval and less toothed. Many more berries than their parents though, so this pair is my favorite.

Kind of a dark shot but here's the one you want Tom, "Blue Girl"...

I'm here! Had a couple of phone calls, and one was a marathon call from my sister! :ha: I've got to get some lunch and do a load of clothes. Had to go check on my little Texas Mountain Laurel to see how it was doing since I was bragging on it.

I have two earth stars like the lighter one you have pictured. Not any dark ones like the other one though. I agree with Penny, that is gorgeous. I love flashy colors on plants! :)

We had a cold front come through a while ago and the temperature has dropped about 20 degrees and we are supposed to have a hard freeze tonight, so I need to cover plants up this afternoon. ~J

Hey Sher. and J-Nan., just taking a little break. While poor Sher. is in "Snow Limbo" some of us are busy starting seeds for Tomatoes, preparing Beds,( with Manure and Leaf Mulch), for 20 new "Apache" Blackberry Plants that will be going in the Ground in February,( during the second quarter of the "Waxing Moon"). My mom is all for it! :D

Don't worry...I won't disappear for a year though and I'll let you guys all know if I'm not gonna be around for awhile.

Cool about your seeds, JaNan. I'm starting to get the itch to plant many things. I wonder if these brightly colored succulents we love, can be grown from seed? It'd be cool to get a mixed packet and grow a bunch of neat varieties of assorted colors.

Good that you made some, Tom. ;)

I found these at the mall today and they were leftover from Christmas. Ten bucks but marked down to a dollar! It's Gourmet hot chocolate with marshmallows included in a cute littte glass bottle...

I bought a few of them and it's pretty good stuff, I must say.

I'm more of a tea drinker and like green tea especially. I like trying different teas and making my own too. Lemon balm tea is a personal favorite that I grow and make myself.

Sorry, I'm just cheap and it costs less to buy the baking cocoa and make it from scratch. You can also add as much sugar as you want. Technically I'm cheating too, I boil water in the kettle and use creamer, cocoa, and sugar....same thing as a mix. Boiling milk means standing by the stove to make sure it doesn't burn. Best way is with a cappucino machines steam wand......mmmmmmmm I remember the days when I had one. The frothy top is the bomb.
I guess the default time zone is london. I changed it in my profile but the posting times are still listing at 4 AM...whatever.

"How I will get these plants out the door to the garden in Spring, is beyond me..."

Not a problem Sherr, Simply Surgically remove all Foliage above the bottom two ,( Green) leaves, ( I know it sounds cruel, but the Plant will love you for it, because it will have less to support as it acclimates to it's new environment ). If you ever saw the Commercial Growers Harvesting "Pups", you would know that a Banana Plant is a tough Cookie. They cut ALL the Leaves off of them with a Machete, throw them in a Hole, come back later, stand them up and kick some Dirt around them and Water.LOL.

To get Fruit in your area though you will need to give them a good Shot of N/-/K at transplanting and every Month till Frost. I have the Formula if you need it...............Hippie

Thanks Hippie, but fertilizers are definitely not something I would ever need from anyone! :ha: I've got enough to last me for 20 years and in every formula combination you can imagine!

I was just pm-ing with Bob and he's going to give me a call aroud noon-ish...so he can persuade me into growing dozens of Palms, Ornamental Grasses and Agaves from seed! My question is...

How do you dissuade a die-hard plant fanatic who thinks that everyone else should grow what he's growing, from taking over your living room and gardens with all his stuff?! :ha:

Well.......ok then, I won't try to turn you on to Old Hamii High Rose Bamboo, as it grows to 7" Dia. and 40 to 55' high,ROTFLMAO!!!;-)

I wasn't going to send Fertilizer dear, just the recommended formula for Fruiting banana's.
every month with
2 cups of…….1 part Urea Ammonium Nitrate
3 parts Murate of Potash. If those are not available or you want to do it organically, use 5 pounds wood ash and 1 pound Cottonseed Meal.
NOTE: This is a per. Plant formula………..

You may already know this, but while I am on a Roll;
Pruning
For best fruiting it is important to limit the amount of suckers in each clump. The
life cycle of a banana sucker is to grow, fruit and die, so new suckers are needed to
continue the fruiting of the clump. The best system is 3 trunks staggered in age from
fruiting size to newly emerging suckers. The right way to achieve this is to pick a new
sucker every 3 or 4 months during the active growing season. In colder regions where the
leaves have died from winter freezes it may be necessary to remove the dead tips of the
trunks to help new growth emerge. Start at the top of the plant and cut a few inches off,
look for the green live center.
I'm-a-gone now......... Hippie

This is another Daughter of my Raja Puri that I moved to this new location, which is out of the direct North Wind, BUT in a lower location and as we all know cold air moves down hill. The blue Tarp you see behind the plant is on the North side and has 31/2 inches of Bat Insulation behind it and attached to the wire cage and sandwiched by the large Tarp that wraps around the entire enclosure. then on the inside is two 100 Watt bulbs that are lit on extra cold Nights. This one will Fruit this year as it has already thrown over twenty Leaves....

Neither me sherr, last year was the first time I had ever seen a Banana Plant Fruit and it was a real trip. The Blackberry Beds are a bit deceiving, because all you see is a little mound of Dirt, which down here is mostly sand, but it's whats underneath that is important. I tilled up four Rows 33 feet long and as deep as the Tiller would go. Then I ran a string line down the middle and pulled the Dirt back to either side, making a trench down the middle, about 10" deep and 18 to 20" wide. Then I back filled the trench with 6 to 8" of Composted Leaf Mulch and Cow Manure, then on top of that I applied five pounds of "Sea Bird Guyana", watered that down good, then pulled the Dirt back on top and soaked that down good. I did two of those, one up on the front of my Property and the other at the back,( to see which does the best). when I get the Plants,On my Birthday, Feb 11, in the second quarter of the Waxing Moon, I will make one more pass with the Tiller, right down the Middle,( just to be sure there are no air pockets in that Compost), then Plant them 3' apart..........Hippie

What do you guys think I should do. I have a meyer lemon in a 1 gal container. I think it is reasonably acclimated now and I'm thinking of transplanting it. The problem is, the pot I have seems to be a pot of death as everything I put in it tends to die.

Should I transplant it to that pot or use another smaller pot?

The Hollyberry Lady

plastic. It has a few holes in the bottom. It is filled with palm and cactus mix.

The Hollyberry Lady
01-23-2011, 09:49 PM
Why do you figure plants are dying in this particular pot, Tom?

You want to grow your lemon tree in the kind of soil it will like, so you might want to dump the soil in that pot before you transplant your tree into it?

: )

tbaleno
01-23-2011, 10:05 PM
Humm, well, isn't the stuff you use for palm and cactus the same as you use for citrus?

I have to look in to that. I'm wondering if it isn't a drainage problem because the soil was still moist after a month without watering.

Oh, I found a snail on the side of the bucket. I think they are starting to invade.

The Hollyberry Lady
01-23-2011, 10:14 PM
Yeah you don't want to mess with the drainage and have your roots sitting in soggy soil. This would be a reason why stuff's dying on ya in that pot. Make a few more homemade drainage holes using a drill and the pot will be improved. ;)

If that's the soil it likes than by all means...I just meant to give it the appropriate soil that it thrives best in.

Subject: MY LAST TRIP TO COSTCO

Yesterday I was at my local COSTCO buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Jake, the Wonder Dog and was in the check-out line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog.

What did she think I had an elephant? So since I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a Perfect Diet and that the way that it works is, to load your pants pockets with Purina Nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.)

Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care, because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off a curb to sniff a poodle's ass and a car hit me.

I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard.

Costco won't let me shop there anymore.
Better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the time in the world to think of crazy things to say.

On another note,
I was searching on this:

round yellow eggs in soil

I just came across this:

If you used.. or the pot contained an abundance of slow release fertilizer.. with the wrong formula for your zone... especially applied directly to the trunk/crown/roots. Apparently the yellow round things in my soil are slow release fertilizer sooo...

you could have been heavily fertilizing your plant very late in the year.. when it should have been hardening off for a long hard winter like we have in z5/6 ...

which could lead to death ...

The Hollyberry Lady

First, thanks to everyone for the kind words and was only to happy to give you guys a chuckle. We all need one of those every once in awhile.
No Drew, Zone 9, but I have a North south Street that dead ends on the North side of my Garden. I have planted some Clumping Bamboo there for a Wind break, but it hasn't had time to fill in yet.
Originally I came from Louisiana and my Momma was a "CoonAss",( Cajun French) and my Daddy was Indian,( Choctaw) so I have always told everyone that I was a "Half Ass". Speaking of the Cajun's though, reminds me of a True Story that is funny to people that fail to grasp the pure logic of the conversation.

The quickest way to Ville Platte

You gotta love dem Cajuns, chere!

Ask a Cajun a question and you will always get the correct answer.

A man approached Boudreaux when he was visiting in Mamou.

"Excuse me, sir, can you tell me the quickest way to get to Ville Platte?

Boudreaux scratched his head, "Are you walkin' or drivin' ?" he asked the stranger.

"I'm driving."

"Dat's the quickest way!"

Yes, I like to cruse the Catalogs as well, but I tend to lean toward the "Heirloom"
Verities, for the superior flavor. I got some "Brandy Wine Tomatoes" last year, but had trouble with them splitting open. I had them in 5 Gallon Buckets though. I have two 4'x 24' Raised Beds for them this year, but am going to try Rutgers. My Neighbor tells me that they grow well here and taste good. I need to start some seeds, but the Moon want be right until the third of Feb...........Hippie

seeds. :(

Hippie, are you in Florida? Curious.

Nice to hear from you. It's been awhile. :waving:

I've had enough of it too! http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo2.gif

I miss my bike terribly! :( I am dreaming of flying down bike paths again soon, and feeling the warm wind on my face.

I think you must be like me and that's why you buy tons of plants in Winter JaNan...to forget about the cold. I order and sow tons of seeds for the same reasons. I just can't deal with this snow crap much longer but we still have at least a couple months left of it.

I'm just sipping on some ice water and checking out some more seed catalogues but haven't seen much of interest yet...or things I don't already have! :ha:

So tomorrow I'm going out with my mom for awhile in the later morning. I just have to get my mom out of here for a little bit. It's been stressful, to say the least. :(

I was at the store earlier this evening and bought some new hair clips for my hair. I have to buy these really super huge ones because I have enough hair for 4-5 people, so it takes a lot to hold it up. I need these big honking ones to do the job right! :ha: Normally I can't find them but I did tonight.

Alright, sorry to bore you guys.

I guess I'll make an herb tea and check out some more posts. Still feel like gabbing, feel free...

Is it supposed to be nice for you tomorrow?

My Mom is having surgery on her knees on the 31st, so my Sister and I will be with her for that and maybe one of my brothers.

I understand, for sure. I get cabin fever if I have to be in the house for more than a couple of days. UGH! Your Mom will enjoy getting out I am sure!

I bought a Brazilian tree fern today.

It looks kind of bedrabbled, but I hope I can get it to grow for me. It is called Silver Lady. ~J

Not sure what the weather is tomorrow but I just have to take her out for awhile as she's afraid to go out alone and I won't let her anyway. I'm worried she could be attacked again. :(

Hoping the sun will be shining for us...

JaNan, that thing looks kind of cool. ;) I've never seen nor heard of one before. What can you tell us about it? It sure looks interesting. Glad you got yourself a nice new plant. I love it when I find one too.

So, I guess everyone else hit the road? Was it all the hair clip talk? :ha: Sorry Guys! :waving:

I was gonna go on to say I should wax my leather boots tonight so I don't have to do it in the morning. Bob laughed when I told him I use vaseline on my boots, but it's a great sealant that keeps the water out and it also keeps the leather soft and supple. I swear by it and recommend it to others.

I'm debating now on whether to make herb tea or hot chocolate...if I make hot chocolate I'll be up half the night. Maybe I better just stick with the tea...

I don't know a lot about it. I bought it because I thought it looked pretty cool. Here's a little blurb I just copied from the internet:

Silver Lady Tree Fern (Blechnum brasiliense 'Silver Lady') An exotic foliage plant that brings feathery greenery to a homes interior. Simply give this easy to grow fern moderate light, even moisture and minimal fertilizer and you will have a constant green companion. Dont over pot, this will keep its roots healthy and in time a trunk will form. Give this Fiji native an east, west or north exposure so it will have either morning or afternoon sun.

I have to read up on it and find out what kind of TLC it needs, because it will need it.

I know you do have a lot of hair! Do you ever get headaches from it or your clips? I know I do and I don't have half the thickness of yours. I wear mine in a ponytail a lot, especially in the Summer, but I am NOT a short hair kind of woman! :ha:

~J

The Hollyberry Lady
01-25-2011, 11:38 PM
Yeah, I dislike short manly haircuts on women too and have had long hair most of my life...always will I think.

I disagree that women should cut their hair shorter, the older they get. I think it's a bunch of hogwash, because I've seen many older women with long hair and I think they look super great.

Yes, I do get headaches when I keep my hair up for too many hours. At night I usually wear it down but in the daytime when I'm doing things, it's up. ;)

Too funny you asked me that because only someone with long hair would know about this. If I have it supported well, this can usually help things too. That's why I like to buy good clips...

Um, maybe we should take this to the girly thread! :ha:

That plant is really cool. The leaves definitely have a feathery look to them. I bet it will be a stunning specimen one day, now that it's in your care, JaNan. :D Great you got it...and thanks for sharing the shots and info about it, with us.

Yeah, I guess we should! I think the boys have gone to bed though. Hippie can participate about long hair though, right? :ha:

I had a hot mug of some Russian tea this afternoon. Have you ever had any of that? It's a spicy tea drink. You'd better stick with the tea over the hot chocolate if it wires you up. ~J

The Hollyberry Lady
01-26-2011, 12:17 AM
Yeah Hippie...where'd ya go? How long is that hair of yours anyway? And how long ya lived in Florida? I have a friend here in London who is from Florida. Why he ever moved here though is beyond me.

No JaNan...I've never had Russian tea. I like spicy though, so it sounds good. Yup I made an herb tea...not hot chocolate. I'd be up until 4 am if I drank HC this late.

Maybe I will be anyway. :ha:

I still have some shots to take for the girly thread...possibly tomorrow. ;)

I'm gonna try to get some shots while I'm out, if I can. I like taking my camera with me mostly everywhere I go. Never wanna miss a good pic. :D

I intended to buy a new camera shortly after the new year but I have to wait because I can't focus on too much right now...no pun intended. :ha:

I just meant that I want to do some research and find one that's exactly right for me, and don't want to buy it in a rush. I am pretty happy with my new sony cyber~shot for now anyway. It's a cool little camera, that's for sure.

Well, I suppose I'm babbling again but what else is new, right? I do like to converse.

My Father in law has long gray hair and wears it in a ponytail. He rides a Harley too. :)

My Mother in Law sent me the Russian tea in our Christmas box. Here's a recipe for it.

Ingredients

1 cup instant tea powder
2 cups orange-flavored drink mix (e.g. Tang)
1 (3 ounce) package powdered lemonade mix
2 cups white sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
Directions

In a large bowl, combine instant tea powder, orange drink mix, lemonade powder, sugar, cinnamon and cloves. Mix thoroughly. Store in a sealed jar.
To use, mix 3 to 4 tablespoons of mix with 1 cup hot or cold water. Adjust to taste.

I love this tangy beverage on a cold winter's morning when I want something tasty and hot, but don't want coffee! It makes a great gift from your kitchen, too! If calories are your concern, use an artificially sweetened orange drink mix, eliminate the sugar and sweeten to taste with sugar substitute.

I've got my yogurt. Strawberry, of course. I do like other kinds but don't mess with my

I'm kinda afraid of motorcycles because once when I was 12, a jack-ass in the family gave me a ride and we skidded and wiped out. I'm terrified now but I did get up the nerve to ride my cousin's dirtbike around the yard one day but the thing was out of control and I nearly ran right into the house...while my cousin was laughing his ass off, watching the whole thing!!! I could have killed him! He still teases me to this day.

Needless to say, I want nothing more to do with motorcycles or dirtbikes, ever again! :ha:

I'm not a big fan of motorcycles really either. DH is inheriting a 59 Harley from his Dad that we are supposed to go pick up some time this summer. It is special and means a lot to Greg, so.......:0519:

My girlfriend called earlier (in case anyone's reading this) and asked if I wanted to go to the Falls (Niagra Falls) for the weekend, next week. Imagine the shots I could take?!

I told her I'd let her know if I'll go, but I'm seriously thinking about it. Anyone ever been to Niagra Falls? I've been over 20 times but just not in awhile so it would be pretty cool. I don't know though yet because my mom's not doing that great right now and I might need to stick around here. We'll see...

Is there anyone still up...or am I still talking to myself? Should I confirm a reservation at the nuthouse?! :ha:

Good Morning Ladies,( or is it Night?). I am down and out at 11:PM Eastern,( 10: JaNan's time), every night. Its that little blue pill I told you about Sherr, ( cure for insomnia). I'm a "Day person",( since I quit chasing Women and slowed down enough that they could catch me),LMAO!!

Sherr, my hair is just below my shoulder blades and very fine,( and thinning- which is depressing, but what the heck, less to wash). I wear it in a Pony tail, with a "Doo-Rag" when working to keep it out of my Eyes and Mouth, ( hair and Gum is not a good thing).
We have been here two years and I love the soil,(Sand) and climate,( mostly Warm) and being close to the Grandchildren,( who are rapidly becoming young Adults). My eldest will be graduating,( with Honors) this year from High School and has an Academic Scholarship at NE U in Boston, and the other two are one year each, behind. Two Boys and a "Princess".

As to why your Friend left, I don't know, unless he is "Progressive Politically", ( as I am), because this area is Hard Core, radical Right Wing. Needless to say ALL of my Political conversations are done on line, because one can't have an intelligent conversation with some one who believes Science to be "VOODOO", LOL........Hippie

Seriously? :ha: I'm sure they would offer such a service, even though nobody on this planet would like such an operation... right.
If there's an operation for increasing cranial capacity, neuron effectivness... I bet it would have much less candidates, than this. ;)

Personally I try to avoid getting too deep with political & religious talk...because it causes a lot of arguments and hurt feelings too.
That depends who you discuss it with, but generaly such attitude will result in you being not up to date with ideas and philosophies roaming the ether. It discourages me, because most of the people can't actually argue, do not use factual references, can't offer examples and rely only on personal convictions, beliefs, hopes and imagination (then of course paranoia, dementia and other illnesses).
As such, any sort of discussion or argument is what moves intersocial behaviour one step ahead and if proper boundaries are kept, can't really turn in anything else, but progress.

Jack however, will take you up on this and has tried many times before, but I've discouraged him. :ha: Now he no longer chats here and is frankly bored with the non-debating type of discussion that goes on here. http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo1.gif

I too think it's superior to what any "western country" came up with, but this is Europe-wise system today (if you are looking for the best, I believe that Italians got the best of both worlds ;) ). It's been updated since 1989 several times, but it definitely has some bugs. Corruption in the insurance companies mainly. I have to admit though, that even though healthcare and health insurance make significant part of "taxes", it's obvious that the money doesn't end up in the hospitals to improve working conditions of those specialists who need precise surgical instruments or advanced technology. But all in all, I do like it.

Are you familiar with Australian Medicare? Would you be able to compare it with the Canadian Medicare? Or both of those to current European medical care systems? Such as Germany, France, Italy... definitely not British!

No, I am afraid not Jack, I have read the History of the various Health care systems, but at Seventy one,( in sixteen Days), I have to reserve what few active Brain cells I have left for more current events that hopefully I may have some control of. I do purchase some Drugs through "Northwest Pharmacies in Canada to avoid the Dreaded "Doughnut Hole" in our Prescription Drug coverage with US Medicare. Many of the "Name Brand" Drugs have Generic forms that we can't purchase here in the States, because "Big Pharma" has bought enough Politicians to get a fifteen year extension on their Patent's. Speaking of "Graph and Corruption", I am convinced that "Democracy" has been long dead in the US, replaced by an active "Plutocracy". I would love to be proven wrong on that assumption, but as yet, no such luck.......Hippie

Nonsense Jack...I'm quite astute on what's going on in the world and watch the news and discuss world events as much as the next person does, but there's a time and a place for these kinds of dicussions & debates. :) Whenever they've taken place before, threads got deleted and people got banned. It wasn't pretty and it became out of control. :(

I don't want a thread I intiated, to be banned, and known to be a place where we can insult other people and their beliefs...under the guise of so-called 'discussions'. After all, it wouldn't be the first time and it always seems to take a bad turn because people just go too far.

I don't get why folks who want to discuss these matters just don't take their own responsibility and begin a thread for the very purpose...instead of derailing someone else's that they intended for another. http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo1.gif

What's the issue with beginning a new thread and calling it "The Political & Religious Debater's Thread" ??? :08:

Then you could discuss these matters there, without any hard time from me at all. ;) If it gets banned, it won't have my name attached to it!

No doubt you're busy with the new girlfriend, Jack...and glad you are. :D I hope things are going well for you and it's nice that you popped in to say 'Hi'. I was beginning to think you were a snob! Hope school's going well too. I know what you mean about being busy...I feel overwhelmed with everything I have on my plate right now too.

So ya can't keep up to all the posts, eh Jack? Well it is a chat thread, after all! Are you referring to my mini-novels that seem to go on forever, kind of like this one? :ha:

So anyone been on any hot dates lately...with mr. or mrs. wonderful? :bananas_b

Well if you got off the damn computer you might meet someone!!! :ha:

Hope you guys have a great weekend.

Looks like a late night for me tonight. I'm having server problems on my website. But enough boring stuff. Today I picked me up a "cactus pear" at the supermarket as well as a pineapple Well, the pineapple didn't make it 2 hours before the top came off and planted in a container.

So, is that night cream like green avocado dip or something smeared over your face?

The Hollyberry Lady
01-28-2011, 11:48 PM
It's not green and it doesn't look like mud, but it's just night moisturizing cream to keep my skin nice. ;) And wrinkle-free forever!

So cool about planting your new pineapple plant, Tom! :08:

Let us know how it does for you.

I'm having a few problems on my computer tonight...something's just not quite right. Think I have to update some of my drivers...

So what are your plans this weekend? How the job going?

: )

The plans for the weekend are to research how to grow dragon fruit from seed. I'm assuming that "cactus peach" is the same as dragon fruit. At least I hope so. I bought one from the store with the pineapple and want to try to grow that as well.

The job is doing great. I've started putting in some O/T. I racked up a bit of debt the last few months. I had a lot of expenses I didn't plan on like new tires for my car as well as some plumbing issues. So I have to pay off my credit card that got used. The total in damages was about 1,600. I just paid 1/2 of it this pay check and next month I'll pay the other half. It a good feeling knowing my finances are getting back on track.

The Hollyberry Lady
01-29-2011, 01:05 AM
That's just great, Tom. :goteam:

So many people are in huge debt...at least yours is maneageable and you're getting control before it gets away on you.

I've watched documentaries about people who are in thousands worth of dollars of credit card debt...how would you like to owe 70 or 80 grand to your card?!

Yikes!

I was listening to some tunes earlier and still kinda am...on headphones. ;)

Cool about your seed starting too, it should be fun. :D

It's pretty late. Is anyone still up ??? :waving:

Our Home & Garden show in April/May I believe is more about home than garden...and a big disappointment last time I went. :(

JaNan, Bob told me to tell you that he's waiting until warmer weather to send your plants and didn't want you to think he forgot. ;)

Going out for a couple hours over to the mall, even though the weather is horrible...

Hope you guys are having a good Saturday. I went to the mall to pick up a little light that clips onto your book when you're reading in bed at night. Got the candles but had to just drop off the prescription because there was a 2 hour wait to have it filled!!! I told them I'd pick it up tomorrow or Monday.

Got some of my favorite white "french vanilla" hybrid marigold seeds but not much interested me in the way of seeds. I like catalogue seeds better because there's more of a selection. ;)

So who's chatting today ??? :waving:

Hey Ja Nan! Yes, I missed that one at the Nursery. Actually all of the Trees had Fruit, ( except the Lemon), but I thought it best to pick them and place in their respective Pots which you can barely see in this shot.

Me to Tom, it's funny how quickly you can become attached to people.

No Jack, that is "Bamboo" that I divided from a Clump that I saw growing on the side of the Road and transplanted on my Northern Line, as a "Wind Break". The larger Culms are the "Mother Plants" and the smaller ones, new growth. I didn't get it in until late last year so it only had a couple Months to acclimate, before our first,( early Freeze) on the first of Dec.. Hopefully it will fill in this year and provide a Wind Break for my Citrus and one Raja Puri Banana that I have growing up in that area...........Hippie

Our power is intermittent, so I don't know how long it will stay on this time. No power at the Armory where DH is and Camp Mabry is also without power. And of course when there is no power I don't have internet. It is colder here right now than it has been in 20 years. Records are breaking. I hope everyone is OK!

I'm really tickled to have found it although it was kinda pricey, but I got it 15 bucks cheaper than I would have because they were on sale.

I loved them as a child and now even more as an adult. To have found a small variety that is weeping that will even perform well in a pot, is just too fabulous! :goteam:

I kinda figured you loved willows because of your screenname Cam, so I wanted to make sure you saw it. It will grow leaves on it too, when the catkins fall! It offers year round interest and beauty.

Wow 15 bucks cheaper? It does sound pricey lol. I would love to grow a weeping willow but the climate is too dry though I see them around here, alot dont live that long or they look horrible in the hot dry weather. The Hollyberry Lady

The Hollyberry Lady

No problem Cam...my pleasure. :D

If you checked out the site I posted that link for, it sounds like cuttings are easy to root.

I like to share things with others...especially things they really want. It's fun.

I gotta make sure I don't let the pot dry out in between waterings because willows love to be constantly moist.

I guess we're the only ones around. I'm just making some rice and then I gotta let it sit for 10 minutes after it's cooked. Then I add fresh chives!

: )

Willow87
02-02-2011, 06:35 PM
Thats good that they root easily. Thats my type of plant LOL. I wonder if it could stay in containers for a while. I had some tacos for dinner lol

The Hollyberry Lady
02-02-2011, 06:56 PM
Yeah, apparently they can grow in a container for years, which is what I might do with mine, instead of establishing it in the grounds here. I want to take it with me when I leave here.

It came in a 4" pot and it's 1 & 1/2 feet tall. I intend on repotting it in Spring, right after I prune it. It's a weeping willow that's been grafted onto a standard, so I guess I'm supposed to prune any upright branches and only let the weeping ones remain.

Tacos...yummy!!!

Willow87
02-02-2011, 07:58 PM

Not sure how hardy it is in a pot but I bet it's no wimp. I just love the look of it and I'm bursting to see the leaves.

JaNan asked me in another thread but I forgot to answer...she asked if the leaves will be small. Yes, they will be JaNan. ;)

Sometimes expensive nursery plants raised in their perfect environments can arrive in your not-so-perfect home and be dead a couple weeks later! :(

I am watching it closely to make sure it likes where it is. I can tell when a plant is happy or not, even if I've never grown it.

I think it will be kinda fun to goof around with cuttings and see how they do for you, Cam. JaNan too, I'd be more than willing to share some with you also.

What are you guys up to tonight? I'm now thinking of sowing far more than just geranium seeds. I have a flat with 20 cells in it so this could get very scary!

Hi Janan, yes i wanted the snow, but its sleet and its like a solid layer of ice, that just wont do LOL.I almost fell on my butt a couple of times and i also found a dead mourning dove, it was sad. Plus the temps have been in the teens which is a little to cold for me. My neighbor took 30 minutes getting out of the parking lot, it was bad lol. What seeds are you soaking?

Jananas Bananas
02-03-2011, 11:23 AM
Unfortunately ice and cold usually go hand and hand with snow. We are supposed to get snow here this afternoon and tonight. :coldbanana: I hate it all! Give me some warmth and sunshine!

Oh let's see if I can remember them all. Southern Magnolia, Ensete Ventricosum, Passiflora Edulis, Dwarf Pomegranate "Nana", Variegated Dwarf Pepper "Jigsaw", and white Mimosa.

How are your Texas Mountain Laurel sprouts doing? Did you see Sherry has one popping? ~J

Willow87
02-03-2011, 11:30 AM
Yes thats true. i think we may see some more snow here tomorrow but only a trace. I like when its in the 70s but anything above that is too hot LOL. Oh wow sounds like you have been busy LOL. I didnt know there were white mimosas wow. I saw some mimosas at Home Depot that had red leaves. I havent seen one sprout come up yet, but I still have 40 seeds so I'll probably plant them outside in spring. Sherry showed a picture of her little willow tree, its so cute

Yeah, here is a link to a white blossom.

I saw some of those chocolate ones at Home Depot. I would like to get one of those too, but they wanted around $70 or $80 bucks for them here, so I passed. You know I am a tightwad when it comes to buying plants! :ha: That is too rich for my blood.

Sounds like you need to live in a tropical environment. That's where I want to live. 80 degrees year round would be perfect for me. I lived in Hawaii when I was a kid when my Dad was stationed there. That was pretty close to perfect - It is so expensive there though. ~J

Yes I had some sprouts last year, but they died =( Wow thats so beautiful! I love mimosas . Wow $70! Thats definitely too rich for my blood too. I couldnt pay a fraction of that LOL. There is nothing wrong with being a tightwad lol. Most of my plants are clearance plants and they have done great for me lol.I would love to live in a tropical rainy environment. Thats wonderful that you lived in Hawaii, I would love to live there one day, but I would be scared of the volcanoes LOL.

Yeah everyplace has it's drawbacks, I guess.

Oh I forgot, a couple of papershell pecans too. I am hoping all of them sprout for me. I know if I hand green hands (more than green thumbs) like Sherry, they would!:ha:

Sorry about your little laurel seedlings! Did they get to hot or what, do you know? Seedlings are so tender. I always have trouble hardening off my seedlings. That's usually when I kill them. I just can't keep EVERYTHING in the bay window forever, you know!???! ~J

I love pecans, but my mom doesnt want me to grow any because of the webworms lol. I had one growing in a pot with my sedums but I pulled it, i thought it was some weedy tree but it had a little pecan at the end. A green hand, that would be so nice to have. Sherry has some beautiful plants. Next year I need to invest in some plant lights. I lost a few. The seedlings did well for a while but once spring arrived last year, the leaves started turning brown, and then the whole plant just died. I dont know what I did wrong, I kept them outside in a container and covered them with leaves during winter they did well through winter but after that they just died

You do really well with what you have. I would say you have at least green thumbs! :) I have miscellaneous lights that I use. Just those blue grow light bulbs that will screw into a regular socket - they are good for African violets, and just cheapo fluorescents work well for me too. (think office buildings - they have a lot of nice inside plants and the only light they see are from fluorescents). ~J

I replanted my passion vines and they seem to be doing well. I dont have any sticks that are tall enough for them to climb on so I dont know what I'm going to do. I have most of my plants around lamps and I have some around the only two south facing windows. I think the plants will be happy to go outside once it gets warm enough. Some are looking pretty pitiful right now LOL

You can make a tee-pee frame with three sticks from your yard. Just tie them together at the top with some string or a twisty tie. You can train them if you want to help them or just let them go on their own. ~J

Would that work for smaller pots. The pots are 4 inches

Jananas Bananas

I don't see why it wouldn't. Just make tinier tee-pee frames! :ha: ~J

Good idea, JaNan! :08:

You can also use string, Cam. Tie it from one place to another, near the plants, so the vines can climb along the strings. ;)

Good day and Good evening, Chatters!!! :waving:

Nice to be able to sign on and have some conversation to read other than my own! :ha:

Cam, your Amaryllis is beautiful! I bet you're happy. Keep the bloom cool and out of the sun and it will last longer for you. Enjoy! :D

So it's a pretty sunny day here in London today...

:waving: Hi Sherry! That is a beautiful shot! I may have a snow picture to post in your Winter thread tomorrow. We are forecast snow this afternoon and evening! UGH! But the pictures will be pretty. It is so cold right now, I am holed up in the house. At least there are a few of you guys around to talk to! :)

I started a few seeds yesterday that I had soaking to try and help the winter blues, but it hasn't helped much!

What have you been up to? What seeds have you started?

Oh, I have some pictures to post to the succulent thread. I got a couple of inside the bloom shots you wanted to see. ~J

Thanks about my picture, JaNan! ;) I love sunny shots the best.

I've been busy with my mom mostly and getting things straightened around over here so we can live peacefully. There's been a lot of stress but I'd rather talk about happy things and...

Spring! :goteam:

So cool that you're sowing lots of seeds. I'm not sowing as many as I normally would because I have some decisions to make about where I'm going to be living. I'm considering moving and am in the middle of things, so gardening and seed sowing is not as much of a priority as it would be otherwise.

I have sown some geranium seeds though. Kale & Romaine too. Some pepper seeds as well but only a couple. Your 'marble' variety is one of them JaNan. :)

Gotta grab a quick small bite to eat and put an angus primerib roastbeef in the oven for dinner tonight. Having company. The roast will take a couple hours at least, so I have time, but I just have to get it going. I cook it with my fresh homegrown bay leaves with onions & worchestershire sauce. Maybe I can take a shot before it goes in the oven...

Sounds yummy! I think we may be having BLT's for supper tonight. That is what I am craving at the moment, but that is subject to change.

Oh, I hope the marble does well for you. They are such darling little peppers! I am not sowing a lot - only about 10 or so of each kind just to give me a chance for one or two to sprout (I hope). I like the variety I guess.

I have some geraniums that are getting ready to bloom again. My hot pink ones.

Nice JaNan! :waving:

When that bloom dies, you should cut your geranium plant back drastically, and remove the old spindly growth and allow new shoots to develop and grow. The plant will look new and be once again covered with leaves.

After a geranium plant is a year old it appreciates getting pruned so it will look full and vibrant once again. If you see new shoots growing at the base of the plant already, cut off all the old woody leafless branches...right down to the new growth.

February is the month to sow and grow geraniums, most especially. ;)

Yeah, I'm totally excited about the marble seeds popping. I know that'll be one pretty plant. :D

I sent pictures I had developed of my plants, all my best ones, to my grandparents and I think they got them today, if not tomorrow. They love to see my stuff and my grandmother tells people I'm a professional gardener, even though I scold her and tell I her I am not! :ha: She loves to rave on about it though. LoL.

So, I might be up late tonight...sowing more seeds! I recently bought some fresh 'french vanilla' marigold seeds. There's a reason why they're one of my favorite flowers. Here's a pic of one of mine from last year...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/092.jpg

Gonna sow some seeds tonight. They pop in just a little over 30 hours...that's how fresh, viable, & fast sprouting they are. What a fantastic hybrid variety that is ideal for pots but excellent in the garden too. The flowers are many, and they keep coming all season log until frost.

:ha: It does look kinda bad doesn't it! Sorry! I'm sitting here laughing out loud as I am typing. Greg thinks I have lost it. I am not a very good pruner! I don't like pinching off new little leaves either. Ha! Ha! Ha! :ha: Those little ugly geraniums are about 3 years old - poor little things. I have tears running down my face! :ha: I can just about see the horror on your face! I have to wipe my face! I have always just thought that geraniums hated me!!! :ha: Oh lordy, lordy!

The Hollyberry Lady

Too funny, JaNan!!! :ha::ha::ha:

I wasn't looking horrified though...just trying to let you know how you can enjoy your geranium better. I've been growing them for so many years and learned the hard way like you...keeping old spindly practically leafless branches on my plant.

Like you, I thought they just didn't like me and this was their way of telling me so!

When the blooms die, cut down those 2 feet long brown woody branches once and for all! :08:

That is just too funny though and I totally see the humor.

On a serious note...

You and many other gardeners have got to get over this pruning complex you've developed somewhere along the way. Most plants love and benefit from regular pruning. It often makes the difference between dense & spindly...

as JaNan has so kindly demonstrated! :ha:

Three years old and never pruned?! Good Lord, I've got to teach you some things, girl! :goteam:

Get the scissors immediately! :doggyandnaner:

OK, ok! I shall give it a try. What if it kills them? Do I stick the sticks back in dirt? Will they grow too? I don't think there are new leaves at the base. I really do have a complex about it. How did you know? I don't have a problem hacking a pup off something though. Go figure??? :ha:

The Hollyberry Lady
02-04-2011, 12:22 AM
Can I see a picture of the base? It won't kill it to prune it, but please let me see it first...

Have you ever given your geranium any fertilizer, JaNan?

Let's figure out why you have an aversion to pruning. What are you worried will happen if you do it...that the plant will die? The truth is, they can die or at least not do as well when you don't prune them...not the other way around. ;)

Pruning is good and it stimulates new growth. You'll love your geranium a few weeks after you prune it.

Those brown branches are somewhat dead already and that's why no leaves form on them, or barely any.

Have you ever collected seeds from your geranium, JaNan? It's real easy. :D

: )

Jananas Bananas
02-04-2011, 12:30 AM
Yeah. I will try to get a picture of it for you in the morning. Scissors are not going to work on those tough old stalks, I'll have to get the pruners out. I really have them in several sizes, believe it or not! But they are all like brand new! :ha:

Yes, I have collected seed from them, but I never planted them. They look like a needle, kind of.

The Hollyberry Lady
02-04-2011, 12:47 AM
That's right JaNan...they do look like needles. If you sowed new seeds, you'd have a vigorous young plant again, loaded with many blooms.

Time for a late night yogurt snack...

I think I need a snack too. I think I will get an apple, then I think I will hit the hay after that though. I need to try and sleep while the urge hits and the eyelids are getting heavy. It must have been all that tearful laughing - it just wore me out! :ha:

Enjoy your apple! :03:

Y'all gotta love the South

Alabama

A group of Alabama friends went deer hunting and paired off in twos for the day. That night, one of the hunters returned alone, staggering under the weight of an eight-point buck.

"Where's Henry?" the others asked.

"Henry had a stroke of some kind. He's a couple of miles back up the trail," the successful hunter replied.

"You left Henry laying out there and carried the deer back?" they inquired.

"A tough call," nodded the hunter. "But I figured no one is going to steal Henry!"

Georgia

The owner of a golf course in Georgia was confused about paying an invoice, so he decided to ask his secretary for some mathematical help.

He called her into his office and said, "You graduated from the University of Georgia and I need some help. If I were to give you $20,000, minus 14%, how much would you take off?"

The secretary thought a moment, and then replied, "Everything but my earrings."

Louisiana

A senior citizen in Louisiana was overheard saying ... "When the end of the world comes, I hope to be in Louisiana ."

When asked why, he replied, "I'd rather be in Louisiana because everything happens in Louisiana 20 years later than in the rest of the civilized world."

Mississippi

The young man from Mississippi came running into the store and said to his buddy, "Bubba, somebody just stole your pickup truck from the parking lot!"

Bubba replied, "Did you see who it was?"

The young man answered, "I couldn't tell, but I got the license number."

North Carolina

A man in North Carolina had a flat tire, pulled off on the side of the road, and proceeded to put a bouquet of flowers in front of the car and one behind it. Then he got back in the car to wait.

A passerby studied the scene as he drove by and was so curious he turned around and went back. He asked the fellow what the problem was.

The man replied, "I have a flat tire."

The passerby asked, "But what's with the flowers?"

The man responded, "When you break down they tell you to put flares in the front and flares in the back. I never did understand it neither."

Tennessee

A Tennessee State trooper pulled over a pickup on I-65. The trooper asked, "Got any ID?"

The driver replied, "Bout whut?"

Texas

The Sheriff pulled up next to the guy unloading garbage out of his pick-up into the ditch.

The Sheriff asked, "Why are you dumping garbage in the ditch? Don't you see that sign right over your head."

"Yep", he replied. "That's why I'm dumpin' it here, cause it says:

'Fine For Dumping Garbage'."

***

You can say what you want about the South, but you never hear of anyone retiring and moving North.
