I'm back!!! I've been up since 4 this morning last minute vacuuming and dusting and such before everyone starts showing up. Just sat down to take a quick break before I can think of something I want to get done. I'm excited and can't wait! :woohoonaner: ~J

Merry Christmas, Gang...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/merry57.gif
Hope everyone's having a good day. :D
Here's what my mom got me for Christmas. It an authentic crystal heart...it sits on a base that lights up with many colors and shows crystal prisms on the wall...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC00874.jpg
You can put other crystal pieces on top of the base to showcase them with the pretty lights...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC00879.jpg
The heart is pointed at the back so it has many prisms...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC00883.jpg
If you don't want to use the base to display crystal pieces you can set it inside something and it wll continually change colors. Like this mosaic candle holder...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC00888.jpg
The base is rechargeable and will light up for 8 hours at a time on battery but you can also run it on a power cord too. I really like it and think it's way cool.
What'd you guys get for Christmas? :waving:

Installing linux on the laptop as I type. The good thing about linux is that the install disk is also a live version of the os. So you can be using linux while you are installing it.
The laptop is huge compared to my old one. For me that is negative. I like small laptops. I would have personally preferred a netbook over this powerhouse but it is nice not having missing keys and not having lines going down the screen.

The Hollyberry Lady

I'd eat it anytime too Tom, but nope Jack...lasagna isn't really a summer dish.
It's more of an Autumn/Winter dish for when it's cool outside. It's heavy and it sticks to your ribs so you wouldn't want to eat it in summer...unless you have air conditioning! ;)
Hope you guys are having a good "Boxing Day"...which is what us Canadians call the day after Christmas. No, we don't try to punch each other out, in case you're wondering. :ha:
It refers to the stores boxing everything up from Christmas and selling it all off for cheap just to get rid of it. Boxing week brings some very low prices and good deals and it's the time to shop...if you have any money left that is!
Hope you guys are enjoying the season so far...

Sherry that is a very SPECIAL present! I absolutely LOVE it!!!! I love the way it lights up and glows. And kudos to you being able to capture that with your camera I might add! Great job!
I have to catch up reading on my favorite threads and this one is always at the top of my list. I can eat lasagna any time of year too, and spaghetti....yum yum!
That Didjeridu is beautiful.

Thanks Janan...I'm just in love with it too. Apparently there's other crystal pieces you can buy to sit on the lighted base also...like a butterfly or a flower in a pot! There's even an adorable tea set.
I might get another piece for my birthday. My mom has one that she got a year ago and it's an open oyster with a pearl inside. It's all crystal and the pearl is a little crystal ball. It was limited addition though so she can't get another one. :(
I'll take a picture of the oyster the next time I'm at my mom's place. It's just gorgeous, Janan.
The crystal and lighted base to showcase the crystal pieces on was made by two Italian sisters. It's handcrafted crystal and the heart I have is very pointed at the back so it has a lot of prisms.
So glad you like it too! :D
Did you have lots of good food on Christmas day, Janan? Hope Santa was good to you.

I have a crystal ball collection and a paper weight collection that I sometimes display on a lighted base. I also used them as displays for pictures of my jewelry that I sold. If I can dig some up I will try and post a few for you to see tomorrow. I would do it tonight, but I am really tired. You will like them they are so pretty. Not as beautiful as your heart though!!!!
Yes, Santa was good to me. I had a blast this year. It was retro themed, and everyone really seemed to enjoy it.
We had Feliz Navidad and had fajitas and guacamole, seven layer Mexican dip, Rotel cheese dip with tortilla and corn chips, jalepenos, stuff like that. Since we had it on the eve of Christmas Eve, we knew everyone still had traditional Chirstmas meals still to eat and didn't want them to be sick of it by the time they got to eat it. Everyone enjoyed it. We had leftover fajitas tonight for supper when we got home and it was just as good today! I took a picture for you but it is not onto the computer yet. ~J

What a fantastic idea...having fajitas! So thoughtful too of people being sick of turkey by the time they get to it! I love mexican food so it all sounds delicious. Can't wait to see the pics tomorrow or when you're more rested.
I am amazed at how much we have in common, Janan! I too, have a crystal ball collection that hangs in my windows! I have other crystal pieces dangling too...like a star, angel, and a moon. I'll show shots sometime soon too...
You need a lighted base to display your crystal, Janan. ;)
I'm glad Santa was good to you. I'm cracking and nibbling on some Christmas nuts right now...my favorites are filberts and brazil nuts.

OK I couldn't find the pictures I was hunting for so I went and took some new ones. Here is my closest faceted one similar to your heart. It is a diamond shaped and the light filters out all over:
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=39543&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=39543)
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=39542&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=39542)
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=39540&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=39540)
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=39541&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=39541)
My faceted balls don't have hang loops on them so I just put them on a windowsill to catch the sunlight. I do have an elongated one that actually has a led light in it so it lights up. I used to have it hanging from the mirror in my vehicle, but it is not there now so I am not sure where it it! :ha:

So beautiful, Janan! :goteam:
So you have a lighted base too! :08: That's so cool that we have nearly the same thing!
I get my crystals at this place that calls them 'suncatchers' so the balls have a place to loop a string, chain, or fishing wire through them so you can hang them in the window. I'll show the others I have later...
Thinking of taking a trip over to the mall but not fully decided yet. I want to but I'm lazy today...and it's cold outside. :ha:

Too funny Janan...I didn't mean to imply that Greg never bought you any jewelery! :ha: I know what you mean though, and I'm easy to please that way too. If it's sparkly and shiny, it's good enough for me.

I'll stay logged on while I'm gone. Feel like getting something special since I'm ashamed to say my mom and I didn't even have a turkey on Christmas Day!

Now I'm just listening to some carols and about to turn on my new crystal heart and my christmas lights.
Unbelievably, my neighbor that I am charging with assault got on the same bus as me!!!
Luckily I had my camera with me and was able to snap several shots of her for court...she's supposed to stay away from me. It was kind of unnerving but her and her bullybuddy that she's recruited are trying to intimidate my mom and I. :(
Hope everyone's having a good night so far. I'm having an orange pekoe tea right now and gonna post a bit maybe...
Janan, your crystal is beautiful and thanks so much for sharing pics of it. You've got a lot of nice stuff. ;)
Tom...
You around? :03:
How's your lemon tree? Is it in full sun...where are you keeping it? You must be so thrilled to have it, eh? How's your laptop doing?
Cam, where ya been? More family Christmas parties? :waving:

How's this for a good deal...
Quality Street is one of my favorite Christmas chocolates and this can is normally 20 bucks to buy before Christmas...

Today I picked one up for less than 5 bucks!

It sure pays to wait until after Christmas to get things you'd normally pay a fortune for.
I'm sharing them with my mom though, because I don't want my bike tires to buckle, come Spring!!! :ha:
I also picked up some of this amazing cinnamon carmel popcorn that's got tons of pecans & almonds stuck to it too. It's 15 bucks for a cannister of it but I got one for 3 bucks today!
Got some lights and LED stars for super cheap also. ;)

Batteries were the only thing I saw on sale at target today, but they overstocked on Reese's so those were on clearance.
I think they've wised up to our schemes, and wait a week or so after Christmas 'round here.

I'm finding a lot of sales. When I stopped by Lowe's they had two of their huge tables where everything was 10 cents, yep! I bought a couple of large palms for 50 cents each!!! I spent $11 and filled up the entire back end of my SUV! Wally World has Christmas stuff 50% off and more (most stores have this going on). I want to pick up some of those energy efficient outside lights so I can put up even MORE! :woohoonaner:

Now's the time to buy the LED lights for outside, because you'll get them way cheaper. They last forever...5-7 years!
This is the fourth year I've been burning my snowflakes!
Here's another suncatcher crystal I have, that's disk-shaped. :D
It's coated with something to make it extra shiny and sparkly! When the sun shines through it...it's spectacular and it makes many rainbow prisms on the wall and carpet. Just took these shots of it today...

I've been known to do that too Janan...buy xmas presents throughout the year instead of all at once, but not faithfully. Some years I leave it until last minute...like this year!
Thanks about my suncatcher crystals Janan. I'll take some shots of some of my other ones too, later this afternoon. I have a small crystal star as well.
Not sure what to do with myself today. I'll try to get a shot of my LED indoor reindeer later too. I didn't put up a tree this season...just put up a reindeer! :ha: Henry loves it though, because it's shiny with lots of little mirrors and lights on it. You'll see...
What are your plans today Janan? I might just relax and hang out. Sometimes I spontaneously go out off the cuff, just to pick up a thing or two, but for the most part I'm around. :D

Well it seems like we have been running for a LOOONG time, so I will be staying at home today for sure and probably for the next few days.
We will be having turkey and dressing for new Years since we didn't have it for Christmas as well as ham, black eyed peas, and cabbage. So another spread coming up! Wheew, all this FOOD! Everyone has gotten used to me taking pictures of the food for your thread. :ha:
I will be popping on and off here today. I do have some cleaning to do today. I was potting up those succulents in the bedroom on the carpet and even though I had newspaper down, I still made quite a mess. I really felt a need to mess with plants yesterday though. ~J

I'm kinda busy on and off too, so no worries. It's a lot to get everything ready, I know. My mom's sister didn't come so we didn't have to put up with my uncle...which was a good thing. :D

It does seem to be just us doesn't it? The boy's must be at work or, I started to say school, but I think they are all out for winter break right now.
I am cooking lunch right now. Making my version of goulash. I'm sure it doen't compare to Ante's but it is very very good. I already took a picture of the sauce simmering for you! :)
I love those Sherry! I have some in that icicle shape. They actually came off an antique crystal chandelier (I love those too - go figure!) that was falling apart, so I bought it for the crystals. I decorated a smaller Christmas tree with them one year. That LED one that I am looking for is that shape also.
Sherry do you work from home? I know you are the complex's gardener, but do you do something else for them in the winter time as well? Lucky for me I do. Selling on eBay let's me work all sorts of hours and in my PJ's if I want to. :) ~J

Nope I don't work from home. I'm fortunate enough to live off of an inheritance and have my financial needs looked after. ;)
The gardening that I do here...I do completely for free, by the way!
I do study Abnormal Psychology from home though...or at least I should be. :ha: It's a heavy subject with a lot of disturbing material and you have to be in the right frame of mind to deal with it. I've studied Psychology and Human Relations as well.
I noticed that Cam was around! :waving: Drop in and say 'hi' if you see this...
Glad you like my crystals, Janan. Too weird when you mentioned that lamp because when my mom sold her house I made her take the chandelier so I could steal all the crystals from it! :ha:
Oh I love goulash! Sounds yummy. My friend gave me a recipe for hungarian goulash with paprika and stewing beef and it's totally delicious. :goteam:
Bon Appetit, Janan! I made a garlic cheese bun in my toaster oven with a salad on the side for lunch.

Well sorry for the circumstances of an inheritance, but good that you were taken care of.
I did not realize that you do it for free! They need to compensate you somehow! That's a lot of work, effort and cost that you are shouldering to do that.
So you are in college right now. Are you studying to be a Psychologist or it is just an interest of yours? A very good friend of mine (a nurse) finished up her degree with a Masters she got online from University of Phoenix. She is a hospital administrator right now.

I do have a college diploma but right now I'm studying at the university level...but they allow students with special circumstances to do their studies from home. However you go to the campus for exams.
I suppose I will become some sort of counsellor...grief counsellor.
The truth is I've lived here for 11 years and have seen 4 different owners in the time I've been here. The ones we have now are completely neglectful and irresponsible...and this is putting it mildly unfortunately. :(
I am using their grounds to gain gardening experiences and frankly for the shear sake of my own pleasure and enjoyment. They are getting free landscaping and increasing the value of their building and property by thousands of dollars!
I have free reign to do whatever I want here in terms of gardening...and it's no wonder why, when it's free! :ha:
One day when I leave here, I'll take the things most important to me. When my mom moved here we brought all her gorgeous shrubs with her and transplanted them to the grounds here.
I've never even so much as hinted at wanting any money for what I do here because that's not why I do it. I just love & enjoy it. I doubt they'd pay me even if I asked anyway but they at least don't raise my rent.

Are you going to buy a home eventually, or do you like the condo style life? I know a lot of people do because they don't want the maintenance and stuff of a home. Especially young people like yourself! I can just imagine your gardens though! Wowza!
We like living in the country, so I can have my animals and plants. I won't live in a neighborhood, for one I can't have my horses, and for another I don't want a home owners Association tell me what I can and can't do on my own property! Subdivisions do that here which I think is ridiculous! You have to "ask" their permission to put a swing set up for your kids or a hot tub in your back yard. Geez!
I have a degree too, and a variety of certs - some I use some I don't.

You can safely do that. You could also cut it in half. In fact you can do that with those I sent you too, cut them in to pieces that are three or four inches long and you will have a pot full by summer. Just try and keep the tops and bottoms marked. Let the raw cuts callous over a bit then stick them in your growing medium. I have found these are super easy to propagate! :D

Those roots are the arms that they climb and hang onto stuff with. I get them tangled in my hair all the time. It is like a circus act around here sometimes! HA! HA! :ha: Mine are all wild hanging down in a hanging basket and when I am grooming and misting the plants underneath......well!

Tom, between Janan & I, you'll have more dragon fruit plants than you know what to do with!
Funny the post office tells you that stuff will be warm in the mail but come to find out it's a bunch of hogwash, so I'm sorry for promising plants or cuttings to people for right now. We found out the hard way from Janan's package that things are not kept warm at all and only the strongest survived the trip.
Two of Janan's dragon fruit cuttings died though, or I would have had more.
Sorry Cam about your white cactus but I promise to care for it over the winter and send it to you at the first of Spring. It's just if I sent it now, it would die. All of Janan's thanksgiving cactus cuttings were dead from the cold. :(
Anyway Tom, is there a dragon fruit variety in particular you are interested in or just any kind?

Tom have you tried seeds yet? They are easy to start, but are very tender. You can buy a fruit at an Asian Market grocery store and save some of the seeds (there will be a million). I did that and started them in a wet paper towel in a zip lock baggy then transferred them to some moss. Sherry can probably advise you the best way but here are some pictures of mine:

Check out this little fella I met yesterday...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC01051.jpg
He's a Gecko. :D
Tom...
propagating Holly cuttings can be difficult. I rooted a cutting recently in a way that is not recommended but that worked. I removed all but one set of leaves and stuck the 6 inch piece half way down into some extremely well-draining soil-less mix and sprayed the cutting with Wilt-Pruf.
It sat dormant for over six months but grew slightly in length. The leaf bud is now swelled and I expect it to burst into growth in the Spring or Summer.
I'll show you a shot of it later...
Normally you take a bundle of Holly cuttings (4-6" long) and remove all the leaves. Bury the bundle tied together (about 10 sticks) and lay it down on it's side under the soil in the garden (1-2" deep) in Summer/Fall and look for tiny Holly sprouts in the Spring emerging. The plants grow up from the nodes where you remove the leaves from. :D
I would experiment though because you can have success using several methods.
Janan, check out this cool little LED light set I bought on sale for 5 bucks from 20...

Here's that Holly cutting that's over 6 months old...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC01093.jpg
The cutting is in a soil-less mix but those are just decorative stones on top. Notice the swollen leaf buds? Roots are present because the cutting won't budge when I tug it. :D
How's everyone's New Year's Day going? We'll be eating turkey soon! Mmmmmmm!

There's nothing worse than bad pizza, Tom! Sorry it sucked! :(
Our turkey was fabulous!!! I've been at my mom's since late this afternoon and only got home a little while ago. I brought the cooked bird over to her place...luckily she lives right next door. :D
Janan, I hope you'll see these pics at some point whenever you log on. Here's that crystal oyster I was telling you my mom has to display on her LED lighted base. It's a limited addition collector's piece...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC01097.jpg
Here's the back so you can see the square cuts in the crystal...

I like it so much. :08:
Also too Janan, I thought you'd like to see my mom's real crystal lamp...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC01111.jpg
I took some other shots, of some things I think you'll enjoy seeing as well. I'm busy loading them as we speak. Let me know if you're around Janan...
If anyone else is around though, feel free to pop in and chat too. Janan and I just like to gab, but we also like talking with other people too so please don't anyone feel left out. :(
I for one would like to know where Bob is?!
It seems he's become a stuck up snob, now that he's been named "Banana King"! Too good now for us little people who haven't seen any fruit yet! :ha:
Wonder where he could be...
Here's that shot you requested Bob...if you ever see it! It's the flood in Kiwanis park across the street from where I live. Sorry it's a bad shot though but I took it through a foggy window. It's been raining for days and all our snow is melting from the mild weather. The Thames River is flooding...

Hope everyone's having a good weekend. :waving:
: )
Snob indeed!!! .... and this coming from one who's been showing off all of her crystal and double glazed Royal Daulton china with hand painted periwinkles!:ha:
For the record I've been enjoying my other hobby which must remain nameless here so no one gets upset like last winter. ( successfully I might add:ha:) That's why I havent been on so much.
Are there any trout in that stream you posted? I'd be out there with a pole and some worms..........and a frying pan since I know I'm going to get something!

How dare you call my white slimline telephone Bob, with last number redial, and mistake me for the Chinese take-away!!! :ha:
Sorry everyone...silly inside joke between Bob & I. ;)
Too funny that you mentioned Royal Doulton, Bob!
Although these do not have the hand-painted periwinkles, they are Royal Doulton figurines that belong to my mom and I thought Janan would especially love to see them...

Not the clearest shots but I took them kinda in a rush. :(
Couldn't you just see Hyacinth displaying one of those, Bob?! :ha:
I think it's ridiculous that your other hobby must go unnamed. Men have been hunting since the beginning of time...and thank goodness they do, or I'd be staved! :ha:
You couldn't pay me to eat anything out the Thames River and I think most people around here feel the same way, Bob. It's been contaminated several times, although many years ago now.
I believe there are fish in there, but I doubt trout. I can ask around and find out for you though. ;)
Oh and Janan...
My mom & I used to work at The Bradford Exchange for years, so we have lots of decorative collector's plates, figurines, and dolls. Here's a beauiful doll that we both have, called "Cinderella"...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC01151.jpg
See her holding a glass slipper?!
I have "Rapunzel" as well but she's kept in perfect condition in the original box and will be worth thousands someday. I'll take her out soon though just to snap a shot for you, Janan.
Hope you get to see all the pics I took for you when you log on.
Bob, I'll get a better shot of the flood in the park later.
So is everyone enjoying their weekend and new year, so far? I kinda am. :D

Enjoying it so far. I have tomorrow off and since I'm contracting I don't get paid :( But I'm going to enjoy it as the following week I start as regular employee with paid holidays and vacations.
Today I took the two sprigs I procured and just shoved the stems into the ground. I figure nothing will come of it but I had to do something with them.

You never know though, about the sprigs...they could surprise you in Spring! ;)
I like expermenting and always try to encourage others to also. There's no authority on gardening and you may have success where others have had failure.
So I gotta shower some plants today and fertilize a couple as well. Everything is growing well with no pest problems. :)
Having leftover turkey tonight for dinner, with all the fixings. The gravy turned out fantastic! :D
Our weather had been so mild here lately with tons of rain. If the streets weren't so wet, I'd go for a bikeride!
Went to my mom's today for ham & eggs and played with her bunny rabbit Buttons. He was leaping over things and it was too funny. He can even clear the couch! :ha:

Blake I love the same shots black and white and in color. Very artistic! Those are print worthy and should be mounted and framed. :)
Sherry I love all the pictures you are posting! Those Royal Doulton Victorian ladies are so beautiful - as is Cinderella! And I am loving all your Boxing Days bargain lights and Christmas stuff you have been finding. You can use those little stars all year round as far as I am concerned - I would! :ha:
That crystal oyster is to DIE for! That is a beauty and now I am jealous! :ha: And that lamp is exquisite!
I have a lot of collectible figurines and such. Two china cabinets full in fact! And a tad few porceline dolls :ha: What can we say - we are girlie girls right! :woohoonaner:

So glad you had a chance to see my mom & I's stuff! ;)
Your things are beautiful too Janan and I love that doll with the red curly hair and gorgeous stunning gown. What a beauty.
Yup, we are girly girls, but there's nothing wrong with that. A lot of women today are trying to be men so it's nice to see there are still women with some femininity left. :D
Bob and I watch this British comedy where there's this stuck up snob of a woman named Hyacinth who thinks her Royal Doulton with hand-painted periwinkles are the be all end all...along with her white slimline telephone, with last number redial. :ha: That's why we were chuckling earlier, if you read it.
Nice to see you've joined us again Janan. Missed ya. ;)
Be sure to check out the "christmas images" thread and you'll see more shots I took yesterday.
Yes, I bought those star lights to use all year round. I light my big trellis all year so I thought the stars would look nice around it and they're LED so they'll last for a real long time. Glad you like them too, Janan. I might go back and get another set, if there's any left, that is.
I know what you mean Janan about the holidays being a lot of work. Even though we kept it low key this year, I've had other years where I've slaved throughout the whole entire season. It's nice when it's over and you can relax.
Do you think you'll be up late, anyone?

Some Very Sad News...
Something very awful has happened and Blake has given me permission to share it. I'm going to post a new thread about it and I hope you'll all help me support Blake at this difficult time...
Poor Blake's Guinea Fowl were killed a very short time ago. I'm sure you all remember his cute pics of them. Apparently the dogs harmed them...we all know it can happen sometimes.
I feel very sad for him and I know you all will too when you read this. Blake has joined this thread so he will read posts here as well.
I know he'll be getting some new Guinea Fowl soon but anyone would be devastated by what happened. I'm so sorry, Blake.

Blake showed me a shot privately of what he found when he discovered them but I won't post it of course. Poor things. :(
So anyway, just thought I'd let the members know what took place, so we could all support and encourage him, after such a terrible mishap.

Blake if you need to talk we are all here for you, buddy! Feel so bad for you. :(
Sherry the sweet bay is so cute.
Funny, because it barely grew in the garden all summer and just dwindled along. It really is growing some great big leaves. They are fresh leaves that haven't turned leathery yet though.
Apparently older leaves taste the best and I've experienced this to be true. Cuttings root fairly easily but it takes awhile.
Sorry to hear about your gnat problem, Cam. You gotta get control of them before they get control of you! :ha: Those buggers multiply fast so you should really try to get rid of them and be persistent.
They screw with plant roots as well...especially seedlings!
Good luck in ridding them and hope you win the battle. ;)

Hopefully it will continue to grow well for you Sherry. It looks healthy. I have tried to control them the best i can. I sprayed some flying insect killer and that seemed to control them for the moment. I hate resorting to chemicals but I'm desperate lol. I really hate them LOL. I guess next year I need to spray my plants before bringing them indoors
The Hollyberry Lady
01-03-2011, 10:30 PM
I just want you to be rid of the darn things and not have them flying in your face...tells me the problem is severe.
A good old-fashioned can of Raid can sometimes be useful too in killing off the airborne ones, Cam...along with dishsoapy water. Keep the soil tops dry and water from the bottom for a couple months until all the eggs in the soil have dried up and no more will hatch on you.
Keep bowls of water around the badly infested pots and a lot will drown overnight. Try sticky tape and cinnamon sprinkled on top of the soil. Using Many different methods simultaneously and on-going will eventually rid them.
Just remember if you slack off though...that while you are slacking off, the gnats are multiplying by the day!
People can sometimes think that one or two treatments should be enough, but it's an on-going process to get rid of pests, not a single event.
: )
Willow87
01-03-2011, 10:54 PM
I put some soapy water in a spray bottle and that killed a few of them but I need to try the Cinnamon thing. I have also set bowls of water before so I guess i need to try that again. I just wish they would go away. I will keep vigilant with them because i really want them to go away.
The Hollyberry Lady
01-03-2011, 11:07 PM

Cam,
Get a vacuum cleaner and put that small lengthed diameter section on the end of the hose and(don't get too close) place it near the top edge of the pot. Tap the edge of the pt quickly a few times and those suckers will light and you will suck up most of the problem on the first couple of tries.
Be sure and do this for about 5-6 days straight (to get the guys that hatch from eggs); no chemicals to breathe, no spraying and I have found that it works really well for me!
Regards,
Drew

I always check to see who's online...several times. :ha:
I wish I had the energy today to go to this one big mall further away, to check for xmas clearance items. I think I've got enough for this year though. I never did show you my reindeer. Maybe I still can later...
It's cold and snowy here again. Here we go with our freeze/thaw winter cycle. A few days ago it was spring, now it's winter again! :ha:

I think they are ghost bananas. That's what I thought they were anyway.
I am anxiously awaiting your Rapunzel pictures. Don't take her out of the box though, maybe it will show up through the window!
That must have been an interesting job working for the Bradford Exchange. What did you do there? Did you get a heads up on the collectibles? I think I have bought a couple of things from them years ago. I can't recall exactly what it was though. I thought it was my porcelain Marily Monroe, but she is from Franklin Mint. (I think maybe this was what I wanted to reply about) :) ~J

My feed sacks are 50 pounds, and I may have twisted wrong or something when I was emptying into the cans. But I really think I did it playing. I got a Kinect for Christmas and I was on the rapid river ride. You have to jump and sqwat and bend and such. :( Don't tell anyone though! :ha: Actually it has been like this for several days and I just have to force myself to get anything done. UGH! I hate when I feel like this. ~J

At The Bradford Exchange I was a Client Representative and took calls from people placing orders, complaining about where their order was, etc. It was an office job.
It paid well but it was a demanding and gruelling job. We sold Franklin Mint and Thomas Kinkade...among others too. We also got an employee discount of half price!
They treated us well and at the end of the year we would get a big fat profit share cheque and they'd hold a big employee party where all the leftover stock for the year was practically given to us for free. I'm talking dirt cheap!
Yes we did get a head's up on the up and coming collectibles and could order them before the public could! ;)
I will definitely show you my Rapunzel doll but I'll have to take her out of the box because there's no window on it. I would like to have a shot of her though, so I can see when I want to. Maybe I'll do it later...
Yes, I figured it out after Janan, that they were invisible bananas! Too funny. :ha:
Gosh I'm so sorry you're hurt Janan! :( Mabe you should just rest and not do much. Soaking in Epsom salts in the bath can draw out pain...a cup full.
Sure hope you feel better soon. :)

It wouldn't pay me to work for them. I would spend all my salary buying stuff!
Thomas Kinkade, painter of light. I love his works.
Yes, I haven't been doing much. Laying on a heating pad and alternately ice packs - doesn't get much accomplished. Oh well. I have some epsom salt for my plants. I will give that a try too. ~J

Morning Gang! :waving:
Those little buggers reproduce very quickly! Today is supposed to be a really nice sunny day at about 70 degrees. I know it would be a ton of work, but maybe you can take them all outside and shoot them with the hose. You'll have to get on the undersides of the leaves too, but I have eliminated white flies this way. Then you will just have the gnats to worry about anyway. ~J

Hey Gang! :waving:
I hope everyone is well. I've been very busy lately. :(
Cam that plant is gorgeous and thanks for showing us shots. ;)
Janan, here is my "Rapunzel" doll. She's over 20 years old now, as my mom got her for me long before I started working at The Bradford Exchange too. I've been called "Rapunzel" all my life by people because of my long blonde hair, so my mom wanted me to have her.
She's been in a box for two decades though and taking her out for awhile was a real treat...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC01230.jpg
Her dress was a little wrinkly but...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC01224.jpg
One day she'll be worth a small fortune...

In this shot you can see her hairbrush...

Kind of blurry but I wanted you to see the barette in her hair...

She is very beautiful Sherry, and she looks just like you! The detail on even the teeny little brush is very impressive. I knew I would love her and I do! The open mouth porcelain dolls are always valued more than the closed mouth too! All they ever do is increase in value.
I have a porcelain fairy doll collection. :2745: I will try to get some shots for you later, maybe tomorrow. (I'm sure the guys absolutely LOVE this line of the conversation!!!!!!:ha:) ~J

01-05-2011, 09:02 PM
Gosh thanks Janan...what a nice compliment.
I think she's so pretty, so who would mind being told they look like her! My mom of course raved on when she got me the doll that I just had to have her because of the resemblance and my hair...and how I'd been called "Rapunzel" so often.
Personally, I've always loved the story of Rapunzel and was fascinated by the length of her hair when I was a child...
Now I wonder if she hated washing it like I do, and if it made her hotter than hell in the summertime!!! :ha:
I think it's time for us to start a new thread, Janan!
I don't want our doll pics to get lost in the many pages and I'd really like to take a look at my dolls from time to time without having to open the boxes. I think a thread for this sort of thing would be appropriate and we could re-post our doll shots and other girl stuff. What do you think? I was considering calling it "Girly Girl Things" or "Girly Girl's Thread" ....not sure yet.
I also have a lot of other girly things to show over time, as no doubt you do also. This would give us a spot to talk about it and post shots but not bore the men! ;)
I like looking at guy stuff though too and wish guys would take more pics...hint hint. Blake started a cool thread once about his tractor and some other people posted there's as well...Janan, I believe you were one of them! That was a good thread but I wished I had a tractor to post a shot of. :(
Here's my Cinderella doll too. Although you saw my mom's doll, it was a dark shot and showed no detail. Mine has been in the box for nearly as long as "Rapunzel" has...20 years! She's the biggest doll The Bradford Exchange ever sold...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC01252.jpg
She's more of a child Cinderella but of course my mom insisted I looked like her too when I was little. :ha: I think my mom would think any doll with blonde hair and blue eyes looks like me! Too funny!
Well maybe I better save the other shots for the new thread? Will you join if I start it, Janan? I think you and I might be the only girly girls on this site who are enthusiatic enough to take pictures of our dolls! :goteam:
Men still play with dinky cars and women still play with dolls! :D
Hey don't laugh...my ex-boyfriend had a beautiful wooden rack made to display his 200 Hot Wheels dinky cars still in their original boxes! He was 10 years older than me!
So you men are no different! http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo1.gif
I am about to post a shot of what I had for dinner in the dinner thread. My girlfriend stopped by unexpectedly with something very fattening and delicious to tempt me and so I shared my chili with her.
She's gone now to her new man's house for the night, to play naked twister! LoL! :08:

MOM's! Mine did the same thing! We will always be their little darling dolls - no matter how old we get. :)
Yes, of course I will participate! Your right - it probably will be just me and you. But maybe we can convince a couple of the other girls to join us.
Yes, I did post in the tractor thread. I'm kind of like the girl in the song "She thinks my tractors sexy!" HA HA! :ha: (country song by Kenny Chesney)
YouTube - Kenny Chesney - She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWu4aynBK7E)
I like seeing the boys toys too! :p DH has a knife collection and a spittoon collection and of course a GUN collection. What is the saying the bigger the boys the more expensive the toys? Or something like that. :) We are some collecting sons of guns! :ha: In fact sometimes I think we are on the borderline of being called "Hoarders"!!!!! ~J

Cool Janan that you'll join the thread when I start it, which might be in a few minutes, if I can finish getting these pics loaded of Cinderella. I even got a close-up of her glass slipper in her hand!
Yeah, boy's toys are cool too and the men should interject in this thread more so you and I will shut up! :ha: Especially me! :03:
We need more male input...:2738:
So I hope you had a chance to see my delicious chili & chicken wing dinner. It was pretty good even though I expected to be eating a crustini with my chili, not a chicken wing. :lurk:
So my girlfriend didn't stay too long...and now you all know why! She wouldn't mind if you all knew why either! :ha: LoL.
So for those of us that aren't playing naked twister...what's up tonight gang?

Hope everyone's having a good night. I've got the cinderella pics loaded Janan but thought I'd wait for you to post and then I''ll show them later...so I don't look like I'm the only one there. :ha:

I am busy loading some new shots for the girls just wanna have fun thread, Janan. Give me a bit but I'm working on getting them ready to share. Loved your shots, by the way! ;)
Janan, I am curious about something...
Is your name really spelled JaNan? Why is there a capital 'N'? Is it pronounced "Jah-nan"? I thought before that the capital N was a spelling error but now I think it really is the way you spell it and I was confused. Is Janan short for something? I like it and have never heard it before.
Ok, working on loading pics and will post soon. Hope you're around still.
So how are others doing, too? Doesn't anyone want to chat with us anymore? What's up with that?
: )
Jananas Bananas
01-06-2011, 01:27 PM
Afternoon Y'all! :waving:
You are correct it is prounounced Jah-nan. A capital "N" is used to show the syllable break and it isn't pronounced like Shannan. When you do it in the old Banana Nana Fo Fanna song is where I got the Jananas Bananas for my name here. I think website nick names should be different and private especially with identity theft problem that is so prevelent here in the U.S. :)
I think we girled them out Sherry! ~J

Hi all.
Hope all went well today in court hbl
Topic for today: Snails on your lemon tree leaves bad or good?
Jananas Bananas
01-07-2011, 10:33 PM
I would guess not good, but would have to research to make sure. But I think gardeners always hate slugs and snails. Just those gross slime trails on the plants would be bad enough. yuk!
OK I just found this comment referring to citrus:
The common brown garden snail is very destructive and is considered a pest. It eats large ragged holes in leaves and may totally consume seedlings. Low growing plants generally suffer the most damage, but this snail climbs trees to feed and has been reported as a pest in citrus orchards. It has a fondness for hostas. Peak activity period is February to October. Each snail lays an average of 430 eggs. If you have these and need control procedures, refer to the link cited below. Good luck.

Good thing I got rid of the pesky things. I'm just hoping this meyer lemon tree survives. The last one I got (last year or the year before) died. I over fertalized, after i had tortured it by putting it under a hot lamp in a low humidity environment after it had traveled across the country in a truck in sub freezing temperatures.
This one does look better. I kept it in the basement shaded from my lights and seems to be doing okay except for the snails.

Good Morning & Good Afternoon, Everyone! :waving:
Well Tom, court went extremely well yesterday, I am happy to report. :D Don't have to go again until early February. :08:
So glad to hear that your lemon tree will make it, Tom. There's no better teachers in gardening than trial & error, so you've learned from your mistakes and will do better with this one, no doubt.
I'm a bit tired today and might just take it easy. I do have some plants to water and the sun is shining brightly here today so it might be a good day to take some shots. I did take one though that I'll post somewhere soon...
So I hope everybody's having a good weekend so far. What are your plans?
Hi Janan! :03:
I really loved your shots the other day and I will get some more pics this weekend of other things for the girl thread. In the end, you'll have seen it all so no worries. It's turning out to be a great thread. I hope you like my fridge magnets...
I'm trying to talk Bob into posting a really cool magnet I sent him for his birthday and it's an Irish Blessing poem and there's a clover on it. He refuses to post in the girly thread though. :ha: Too funny. I'll talk him into yet.
Cam, maybe if you post a shot of your mom's doll, Bob will post a shot of the magnet for us. No pressure though but I did say in the 1st post that it's ok for guys to join too. ;)
Alright, so what shall we discuss today. How about the fact that I am living in a jungle!!! Zac's Orinoco banana plant is now approaching 4 feet tall and like 6 feet wide! I am wondering how I will get it through the door and outside in Spring! :ha:
I just cannot believe the growth it has put forth...WOW! It's got two large pups attached to it also!
Alright, I'll quit babbling before I write a book! Chat soon...

Morning! :waving:
Sherry I hope you are still around. I need your help, so you have to guide me through it. I will try to take pictures along the way. It just takes a bit to take the pictures do it get them loaded and posted. So bear with me.
I got out of the house yesterday - had some cabin fever going on with this back incident. Anyway, something I didn't need to do I went Lowe's and Home Depot hopping. (I have a lot of them within 30 miles in any direction from my house) At my favorite one on the "berry isle" it looked like someone went through there with a chainsaw. I asked if I could have some to try and root and they said go ahead. So I have been trying to "prepare to root" them and see what happens. SO I need you assistance PLEASE!!!! Gosh, I hope you are still online. OK I am back to the cuttings! Out.

About your Holly cuttings, JaNan...
Propagation of woody cuttings requires a very good potting soil or even sand so that air can circulate through the medium. Drainage is absolutely critical. Cuttings should not be longer than 4" with most of the leaves removed from the bottom. Hardwood rooting hormone is helpful. Cuttings should be kept in a low light, high humidity environment.
Hope this helps, JaNan. ;)

The longest ones are about 12 inches. I can cut smaller pieces out of those if I need to. But I thought those long ones would make a decent start to a bush. And these things are EXPENSIVE to buy already bush size - between $30 and $40 dollars!!! ~J
Jananas Bananas
01-08-2011, 12:46 PM
OK so a foot long start is not good.
I've got the pots filled with 1/3 potting soil (with a lot of sand), 1/3 perlite, 1/3 horse poo compost. I can change this formula though. Rooting hormone is there. Not sure if these would be green wood cuttings or not there is a lot of green with some brown.
Internet advice said to cut them diagonally. Good advice? ~J
The Hollyberry Lady
01-08-2011, 12:46 PM
The danger is though JaNan, is if the cuttings are too long, they'll dry out before rooting can take place. :(
Hope you saw my last post where I explained a procedure, but you can feel free to experiment
also. :D

What I think is the boy cutting has smaller leaves and no berries. Am I right? (I know nothing about berries - what I have learned I have learned from reading your posts Sherry) ~J
The Hollyberry Lady
01-08-2011, 12:52 PM
Yes, excellent advise to cut them diagonally. I cut mostly all my cuttings this way.
Nice shots, JaNan. ;) They all look very healthy and ready to grow. Just cut 4" pieces and and remove the lower leaves. Looks like you've got a lot of branches so you'll have lots of chances for success. :D
That's right...male hollies never have berries but are needed to pollinate the females and ensure berries on the girls only. ;)
I would suggest removing the berries on the cuttings because it will help them root better.
Good luck! :goteam:

Sherry what about my soil blend? Is that ok or should I add more perlite or anything else? And I need to poke holes with a pencil so I don't knock off the root hormone. Do I wet the soil first so the holes I poke stay as holes or do I wet it after I get the cuttings in?
Yes, no you didn't need to ask! :ha: OK I'm off to cut up my cuttings ~J

Your soil sounds excellent JaNan. As long as it's well draining you've got no worries. Wet the soil prior to adding the cuttings so you don't wash off the rooting hormone.

Hi Zac! Did you get any snow there? We have had a quite the temperature plunge but no snow here.
You betcha!!! Yesterday (Sunday), I drove to DFW int'l airport to pick up my friend who flew from India, and visibility was down to about half a mile while I was on the interstate.
The snow was over with at the airport when he arrived, but luckily is was still snowing on campus where I dropped him off. He was astonished and grateful that he was able to see it snowing (he'd never seen snow falling from the sky before).
It snowed a bit more last night, and the temperature plummeted, causing many accidents. Another friend said Dallas 911 was called more than 50 times for accident reporting just before 8am this morning! A few bowls and cups in my backyard were frozen solid at 11 am before I left for school, which rarely happens overnight.
I would have taken pictures, but there wasn't much to see but a thin coating on the grass and dreary wet streets.

I signed off abruptly last night because I was at my mom's and spent the night. She is being constantly harassed with terrifying noises in the night so I'm staying with her for a bit so she can feel safe and not be afraid.
Last night was astonishingly quiet though so no police needed to be called. I am hoping that it will stop now that I'm here. I will not have my mother being terrified in her own home. :(
I need to go buy a new telephone because the one I have is not functioning properly and it's getting on my nerves to even use it anymore. Gonna buy an office phone with a speaker phone option also. Might go out later...

Thanks so much, you guys. ;)
JaNan, this person is going to be kicked out of here right shortly, and likely arrested in the meantime, but moving to another unit is not an option right now because the only one available is the one beside the defendant!!! In the end, she will be moving, not us.
Cam, it really is only a matter of time before she will be arrested, especially now that she has been charged. The police really try to give a person a chance to change thier ways, with warning and fines, etc. Once they see this is not curbing the disturbances and harassment however, they will make an arrest eventually. In the meantime though, it's been absolute hell for my mother.
How would you like to be in your bed at 3 am sleeping, and all of a sudden you are jolted out of sleep by the loudest slam you ever heard. She lives below my mom so she slams something on the ceiling to wake and terrify her! This person is in their 50's and this is what they do with their time!
Anyhow, it is really doing a number on my mother and she has really been in a state of terror. Now that I'm here though, she feels a lot better. This needs to stop immediately.

Thats so sad Janan, I hope the chick is alright, I put some salt on my steps and I couldnt believe how cold it is. Its still below freezing here. Despite the weather, hope everybody's having a great night. ;)
Here's a half-ass shot I took at the busstop today but I just thought the sky looked kinda nice...

Sipping on some hot Russian tea right now. YUM!
Sherry, I really don't know how the baby got too cold, but I think it was trying to die on me. It went straight from the incubator to the brooder box - both have thermometers and both were 100 degrees. I was checking on them every few minutes so lucky for me that I noticed the little one when I did.
I had one that was taking too long to hatch, which can lead to problems. I had to make her some little house shoes out of bandaids so she could walk. :)

Hi Sherry and everyone.
Janan your little chicks are so cute! I want one now LOL. My amaryllis has another flower stalk forming. I guess the bulb is very mature to produce 2 flower stalks

Janan, my friend here wants me to tell you chickens are the best pets ever, but you probably already knew that. :)
