Hi Gang! :waving:
Sorry about last night Janan...I'm dying to see shots of your new cacti! I saw one today that looked like it was on the brink of purple-ish but I couldn't quite decide so I didn't get it...but now that I'm home I regret not buying! :ha:
I know I can still go back tomorrow or the next day...
Hope everyone's having a great week so far. :D

:ha: And you talk about me, and you do the same dang thing!!!!
The one on the left - the tag calls it lavender, the one on the right - the tag says magenta. So I got both. The lavender has the white throat and is shiny like your beautiful pink one. The magenta is the same color all the way through and the blossom is shaped like that very pale one I have - more of a bell shape. The leaf/stems are longer and wider on the lavender one also.

Oh my gawd, Janan!
That lavender one is just awesome! I want it, big time! :ha:
Did you see that gorgeous pale yellow one that Cam has? I love that one too!
I think the one I saw today was a really dark purple but I just couldn't decide. Now that I am home though, I am certain it was! :ha:
Think I might go back tonight and get it so I can share it with you, Janan. I can't stop thinking about it and wishing I'd just taken the chance and bought it. Gonna pick up that white one too at this other store close by, for Cam. ;)
An excuse to go out again anyway and my mom said she could use some milk, so I can pick that up for her also.
You guys are going to have my windows filled with Thanksgiving Cacti everywhere!
Too funny, but has anyone given any thought about what they'll do with all these Christmas Cacti when they stop blooming?! :ha:

Yes, I did see Cameron's, it is beautiful! That dark purple sounds WONDERFUL!!! :woohoonaner:
Sherry I actually have given it some thought. I like the looks of the leaf/stems even without their blooms. I like the shape and the way they droop. So I will just have them in hanging baskets or somewhere they can flow. Maybe like how you have your curly airplane plant. I have a couple of fountains and birdbaths - they could flow over the top like green water or something. ~J

Hi Members! (;) :ha:)
Sherry, How your jade grow so tall? Ive had my jade for a year, that started out as an 1in cutting with one leaf, and its only 7in tall. when I took the cutting it was kind that had a read rim on the outside leaf (which I think that means that it is the full sun type), but now in lower light the whole leaf is green. Do you cut off all the lower leaves except for the top set?
~alot more awates me, along with a back up of e-mails ;)
P.S. I found a new quote that I like....
"Today is the seed time, now are the hours of work, and tommrow comes the harvest and the playtime."

Hello fellow insomniacs! What has everyone been up to? :waving:
I had a huge jade - it was many years old, but it kicked the bucket last year. Never did figure out why. When I was a kid in California, we had humongous jade on each side of our doorway. They were like trees. Maybe Tony or some of the other California members can post a picture of these. (hint, hint) :) ~JaNan

I was debating on whether to have some yogurt now and think I might. I like putting pieces of bananas in my yogurt. :)
Gotta go to court tomorrow for the beggining of the process against the thief who lives here. It's just a hearing but the first stage in the process. Wish me luck!
: )
Willow87
12-02-2010, 09:19 PM
That would be great Sherry. Wow you have court tomorrow? I'm so glad you knew who stole your plant
The Hollyberry Lady
12-02-2010, 09:33 PM
Yup, court's at 9:30 am sharp.
It sure does make it easier knowing who stole my cactus, Cam...but of course the person is denying it altogether. Big surprise there. :ha:
Nothing will be decided on tomorrow though, it's just a hearing to address the charges...there's more than one charge however, involving another tenant also.
: o
So anyway I should get to bed at a half decent hour tonight but I know I'll be up half the night from worry and nervousness...it can't be helped unfortunately. :(
Hoping to get done early tomorrow so I can take off after and go shopping...and relax. ;)
I might mayonaise off the new cacti I bought today in a bit, because they are badly spotted. I bet Janan is off doing her leaves tonight too! :ha: So glad I found a solution to the problem.
: )
Jananas Bananas
12-02-2010, 09:53 PM
I haven't started yet (the mayo wipe down). I got distracted looking stuff up on the internet!
Do you have any Benedryl? If you take only one you should be able to sleep. That is the active ingredient in Tylenol PM and other PM type sleeping aids. I always have that because of my allergies. ~J
Willow87
12-02-2010, 10:00 PM
Thats terrible that he has stolen from another tenant. I dont know why people do that.
The Hollyberry Lady
12-02-2010, 10:19 PM
I might show a before & after shot of one of the cacti before I mayo it off tonight. I think Janan's new purple one is the worst of them all...just covered in white spots!
Not for long! :D
I don't have Benedryl Janan, but I do have something for motion sickness that my doctor said would help me sleep and not be addictive or cause morning grogginess....much like the Benedryl likely works. ;)
I do have some actual sleeping pills but I'm reluctant to take one out of fear of sleeping in. You can't sleep in for court!
I'll see how it goes. I won't be going to bed before 1 am...that I know.
Yes, it is pretty horrible Cam...especially having to live here and deal with the harrassment and targeting from her since the plant was robbed, too. It's become quite crazy and yesterday my mom even had a big blob of mud thrown at her window...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC00422.jpg
Of course this pic will be shown in court too. Wow, you think your know your neighbors, eh? Pretty sad when it gets really juvenile like it has. This is someone in their 50's!!!
Don't worry...after the police left, I got the mud all cleaned off my mom's window! :D
Well, I'm gonna go spend the next 10 minutes polishing Janan's new plant. ;)
Be back soon...
: )
Willow87
12-02-2010, 10:29 PM
Omg what a jerk! Thats so immature of her to do something like that. I'm glad you have evidence against her, and it was really stupid of her to do steal in the first place, but throwing mud at a window, is she 2 years old?
The Hollyberry Lady
12-02-2010, 10:36 PM
It appears that way, Cam. I am disgusted with her behavior, utterly & completely. So glad it'll be handled in court soon. :D
So ok, I'm going to go polish the plant now. Be back in 10 or 15...
: )

Yes, that would be a beautiful pot full of purples. I have them labeled.
I have one that I want to mayo, but it is so small I will have to use a Q-tip (my rhipsalis cacti - I have two different kinds of them). It will take probably a couple hours to do so I will work on them tomorrow. I am getting pretty tired tonight already. So maybe I can catch some zzzzz's!

The Hollyberry Lady
12-04-2010, 10:05 AM
It went extremely well Janan, and I will be attending again on the 21st of December....just so happens it's the defendant's birthday! :ha:
She said "your honor, the 21st is my birthday and I really don't want to have to attend court that day"!!!
Of course the judge had no sympathy and when someone is being criminally charged they could care less whether it's your birthday or not! It was funny that she thought it would matter though and of course she was glaring at me when we left the courtroom.
I had no idea until yesterday that she was only finding out about the charges right then and there and thought we were there to deal with a restraining order...which we were. Her eyes bulged out of her head when the charges were read though and she discovered that this was about far more than just a peace bond and the stealing of my plant.
This individual actually physically assaulted my mom and I and we have taken legal action as a result.
So there you have it, Janan. We'll see how it goes on the 21st...
So what's everyone's plans this weekend? We're getting more snow but here's a shot I took a little bit ago out my window...

WOW! I would have loved to be a fly on the wall! I think court proceedings are very interesting and don't mind at all when I get called for jury duty. That's just me though, things are what you make them! :)
Hey I need you to PM me a physical address. I want to get your box mailed off next week so you can have it before Christmas. Our mail service slows down a lot this time of year and don't want to take any chances! ~J
The Hollyberry Lady
12-04-2010, 10:48 AM
I can do that a bit later on Janan...
I will likely be mailing out my stuff right after the new year...but I mail 'express post' so the plants will not be affected by cold weather. ;)
I had intended on doing things far sooner but there are too many things going on for me right now and plus trying to get ready for Christmas. We didn't even think we had to attend court on the 21st but have now found out we do. :(
I am a bit overwhelmed from everything...especially this time of year.
I enjoy listening in on court proceedings too, Janan. So interesting. We heard many cases yesterday before ours and saw a lot of bad attitudes getting told off by the judge.
I gotta call my grandparents later and let them know about what's going on. I didn't want to upset them but they know something's bothering me. It's kind of hard to hide it.
Also too, tough to get in the mood for Christmas when you're charging your "neighbor"!
Very upsetting, and even though we took it to court, it's not easy an easy process to go through. No one should put of with being assaulted though and we are not. http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo2.gif
Didn't get around to checking out those cacti yet Janan, but maybe later in the weekend. I think they're calling for more snow but I'm hoping it's a mistake! :ha:
Gotta water a dwarf canna this morning that's popping up pups everywhere! Mine seem like they're going to bloom all winter. We'll see...
I would like to make something half decent for dinner today but not sure what just yet. Feel like pasta so I might make spaghetti. Guess I'll have to post in the dinner thread later. ;)
Hope you guys have a good Saturday. I'll likely be around most of the day.

That is probably a major contributing factor in your insomnia! Stress is never a good thing for your body. No you can't hide things like that from family members that know you well. Not for long anyway.
Don't worry about when you mail mine! I am not. I just want you to have yours before Christmas! :)
I'm am in and out of the house just gathering things for my latest "project". I will do one and if it turns out decently I will photograph it and post it later. I will be around also. I can't go too long, unless I am traveling, without hitting "New Posts" to see what is going on here! HA! HA! :ha: ~J

Yeah, stress & worry definitely keep me up. :(
I like checking out the new posts too...the problem is they're usually mine! :ha:
Looking forward to seeing your pics Janan. Maybe I'll take a few later also. ;)
Sometimes I change my mind and may end up mailing stuff earlier anyway...who knows how things will turn out yet...
I still have to do my Christmas cleaning and decorating which I'll start on some of it today. It's crappy weather out anyway so it'll be a good day to get some stuff done. I want to get my xmas lights up in the window by tomorrow. I'll show them when I do.
I still gotta water that canna & fertilize it too...
Cool, you'll be around today Janan, because everyone else seems to have disappeared! :ha:
Maybe they all looked out the window, saw the snow, and went back to bed. http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo1.gif
Sometimes on Sundays when it's cold outside I like to hang out in bed, sipping green tea and reading the day away, while something good is brewing on the stove for hours. :)
I like to make a special meal on Sunday's because when I was growing up we always had a roast or a big chicken on Sunday. It was kind of nice and my mom would bake a special dessert as well.
Alright, I'll quit rambling and go tend to my canna for a bit...

Wow Janan, I love that idea...looks great. Like a nature bulb! ;)
You and I are a lot alike...I love crafts too and think they're great fun.
I was watering my canna and my mom showed up from next door and so I've been visiting the day away with her...that's why I haven't posted.
Hope you guys are having a good day. It's overcast and yucky here so I'm grateful to be home today. Henry was just saying "what"? a few minutes ago because this is what I say to him when he squawks loudly to show he disapproves of something.
What a cutie pie. He's a real kissy face today because my mom was here singing to him and kissing him. He just adores her and thinks she's really something. She loves him too and even makes up songs for him with his name in them. :ha:
I don't know if the girls will show up tonight to hang out or go out, but if they do I'll be around. My one friend is going away for Christmas and wants to spend time before she leaves with her parents for Portugal.
I usually just stay home with my mom for Christmas, but family usually comes to stay for awhile. My aunt might NOT be coming without my uncle this year...yipppeeeee! Couldn't be happier because my uncle is an old grinch who hates Christmas and people enjoying themselves. He's not my blood uncle thankfully but he comes with my aunt usually and tries to ruin the good time with his bad attitude. I can't stand it sometimes. :(
There's always an idiot in every family! :ha:
My mom and I usually bake a few loaves a week before Christmas...cinnamon, lemon, & gumdrop cake! Mmmmmm...I love Christmas for the food alone! We also like to make some real good shortbread cookies as well and put green and red maraschino cherries on top.
What'cha up to tonight Janan? Are you still doing crafts? Are you gonna make one of those succulent wreaths? That one wreath you showed with the tons of colors was just spectacular! Where the heck did they get all those vibrantly colored ones? I'd die to have some of them.

I have been outside working on one of the chicken pens. We are supposed to be having a cold front come in and I just wanted to make sure everyone is nice and secure and as warm as possilble. I just came in to get a drink and of course hit new posts. :ha: We have sunshine and about 75 here right now.
I only like to bake in the cooler weather. It gets so hot in the summer there is no way I will heat up the house even more. So I never do it then. But I will be baking more soon. Of course we had it going full blast at Thanksgiving.
It's hard to stay in a good mood when a sour puss is around isn't it? Really puts a damper on things no matter how hard you try. You just want to boot them right on out the door. Yes, there is always the Scrooge in every family!
That Henry really is something else. He sounds like such a wonderful companion! I love animals, that's why I always have so many I guess.
I will probably be messing with my plants later on this evening. I don't think I have enough of the succulents to make a full size wreath. I think I will try it with a candle ring size. That one with all the colors is my favorite too! I don't know where they got all those colors. They don't have that many colors where I have been able to buy mine. I can tell you though, the more sun a succulent gets the more color it has. My soap aloe turns purple in full sun, a reddish in dappled sun, and is green in the shade (so I like them in full sun :ha:). I have a flap jack that is green in the house, but red and pink edged when it is out on the porch. So I really think that has something to do with it. I am not an expert by any means though. Maybe one of the cactus experts can pipe in here! ~J

I think that will be my mission this coming spring...to find a few new amazingly brightly colored succulents and sedums. I just love them and want more more more!
Yes, we don't bake much in the summer either, Janan. Who wants to even eat hardly at all when it's 110 degrees outside!!!
In summer, I eat a lot of salads and fruit.
Henry really is a great little friend to have around Janan, but he is very possessive of me and often has what is referred to as "small bird jealousy". :ha: It's kind of cute though and he doesn't like my attention to be on anything else but him if he's in the room. He likes things to be done a certain way and he freaks if they're not!
For instance, at night he likes me to say g'night to all the plastic & stuffed birds in his cage...but it has to be in a certain order. If I screw up the order, he lets me know it instantly wth loud protesting squawks! :ha: It's quite funny actually but he is set in his ways, that's for sure.
Animals really are great to have around and I can't imagine life without my little Henry. Did you know that parakeets are capable of living into their 20's if they are happy and well cared for? I intend on getting the most out of my little Henry and keeping him around for many years if I can.
He loves peanuts and is due for one now. Heaven forbid if I'm late! :ha:

I am misting them - is that where I am screwing up? It is just killing me when a huge bud is laying on the table when it probably would have opened the next day. :( ~J

Good Morning, Friends! :waving:
Hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday so far. :D
Janan...
Is your plant experiencing a lot of temperature change? For example, is it near a window that gets opened sometimes, or a door? Extreme temperature change is one of the main reasons for bud-drop in Thanksgiving Cacti.
If this is not the case however, than I would say the misting may be the culprit. The buds might not like to be wet on a daily basis, although the leaves would enjoy it.
I wonder if your buds are beginning to rot from being wet and then they just drop off. Indoors too, plants take longer to dry off from showers so rot could set in if they are wet all the time and not allowed to dry off quickly and completely.
I think over or under-watering could make the buds drop too. :( You said this wasn't the case though either.
I'd stop misting and see what happens...
Might go over to the mall today for a bit and do some Christmas shopping. I have to get a real nice card for my grandparents and get it mailed because it'll likely take 3 weeks just to get to them!
Who really wants to go out though when it looks like this outside...

Sorry I missed ya this morning. :(
Loved your beautiful shots you had posted on the picture bar today. Too bad they didn't stay up long before they were shuffled off! http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo2.gif Would have been nice to see them up there longer but they sure were
gorgeous. ;)
So I'm back from the mall and I got my grandparents a card. I'm gonna mail it soon so it gets to them on time.
Gotta go back to court in the morning to make some corrections to some documents...I hear we are getting a whole whack of snow today and tomorrow.
It's snowing again now...

Afternoon gang!
I think I figured out the bud drop issue. I got some of my plant doctor books out and it says they don't like to be MOVED when they are blooming. Well, besides the move from the store to home, I have been moving it around on different tables having them as a centerpiece on the dining room table, but moving them off for meals and back on again, DUH!!! I don't water until it feels dry to my finger and only mist if it starts to droop, so I didn't think I was doing anything wrong there. It was only a couple of buds so I will see if this issue resolves itself since now I won't move it again until blooming is done. :)
Our cool front came through here, but it is sunny and pleasant with just a slight chill in the air here. I am outside with just a flannel shirt on and I am comfortable, so it isn't as bad as they were saying it was going to be. ~J

Good you figured out what's happening with your cactus Janan, but I brought mine home from the store in nearly 0 degree temps on a bike of all things, and not one bud dropped!
Talk about the ultimate move!
I think sometimes certain plants are just a bit more sensitive than others. I was terrified that every bud would surely drop off within a few days of getting it home but they didn't! :)
So I was going to snap a shot or two but Henry wants a treat first. Gotta throw some soup on the stove also, to slowly heat up. Having a late lunch today. Was gonna eat at the mall but I hate fast food and that's all they have. Yuck!
I just recently got a bunch of seed catalogues in the mail. They know I like to order early so they send them to me before Christmas. Don't think I'll be placing any orders this year though until after Christmas, with everything going on around here.
Good news...
Since court on Friday, things have suddenly got real quiet around here! :D It's nice to get some peace from the harassment and deliberate noise making. This is what I was hoping for...that the games would be over once the law really got involved. My mom got a great night's sleep last night without any disturbances at all.
I might sow some seeds today...Kale & Romaine. I like growing them over winter and harvesting the leaves. Yummy. Swiss Chard is another favorite to grow in pots over the winter.
I'm around today now for good. Too cold and nasty to be out today anyway. Gotta get Henry a treat, read an email, put the soup on the stove, and snap a shot or two. :ha:
Be right back...

I am flitting around here messing with my plants. Trying to decide what all I am going to put in your box. I want to send you everything you really, really want but I have so many plants that I have never mentioned - wondering if you would like them too. Trying to keep in mind that you have to over winter inside your apartment. Those 3 foot long banana tree leaves crack me up everytime I see one of your pictures of them! ha! ha! :ha:
You like a lot of the same things I like. so I think I am pretty safe with my selections. Knowing you are on a succulent hunt or will be in the Spring I will get you a start or cutting or leaf of all of mine depending on how much I have of something and the size of it. It's just the other plants that I am eyeballing. I figure I am pretty safe with slow growers. But if you don't want anything I do send and you don't want it - feel free to trade it to someone else. :) ~J

Thanks Janan! ;)
I sure appreciate your kindness to me. Keep in mind that with succulents, you only need a leaf or two and they'll root just as easily as a whole cutting. I can't wait to share our succulents and I intend on mailing you all of my best too.
Don't you laugh at my 3 foot leaves Janan! :ha: I love them actually and Henry is noticing them now too. A third gargantuan leaf is forming as we speak! By Spring I'll have an 10 foot tall and wide tree in here!

Too funny, but that thing is very large. It was actually smaller when it was outside in the summer! Weird but the leaves got huge when I brought it into my warm apartment!
Not to worry about me not having room Janan, because I also have plant lights too. I have a friend who likes plants too that I can share anything I don't want with, so don't worry. Just so nice of you to think of me this way. I'll surely start a thread to show all your stuff as it grows...

I am going to send you a couple that mean a whole lot to me, that I have never ever shared with anyone before - not even my sister (and I can tell you I share with her ANYTHING she wants). I don't want to tell you what they are as I want them to be surprises for your Christmas presents. I will let you know which ones they are by attaching a note to them.
I will probably have it ready to ship by morning, I am starting to gather the cutting now. I have a large international one rate box left over from sending Greg packages that I am using.
I want to warn you now though, be very careful pulling the plants out, because some of the cactus are thorny. If you have a pair of leather gloves I would take them out with those on. I will have them wrapped in newspaper so you can tell the difference. :)
I am having so much fun do this! ~J

I am a bit worried about the thorny ones because of Henry, but I can always keep those ones in the bedroom window, so send them anyway. ;)
I will be very careful when opening up your package. :D
I feel kind of bad now though, that you are mailing me a xmas present and I might not be able to get one out to you soon enough to make it for the holidays! :(
I know what you'll say, but I still feel bad anyway. :ha:
I feel very special too, getting things that you'd only share with your sister!

Wow!
I must mail you some special things too Janan, but some you may have to wait until Spring for...such as rooted cuttings from my male and female hollyberry shrubs and and if you are interested in my beautyberry shrub, you're welcome to it as well. :)
Or anything else you know I have that you are interested in, please feel very free to just come right out and ask me for it. I won't mind at all and would actually prefer it because then I'll know exactly what to send instead of guessing. ;)

Didn't sow any seeds yet but might later tonight. I enjoy sowing seeds late at night and often do. I won't be up super late tonight because I have to go down to the courthouse for 9:00 am to make those corrections, but at least until midnight or 1 am. I told you not to feel bad! Period! :0521: I want you to feel good - so just turn that frown around!!!!
Would you like some berries from that Yaupon holly? I picked it up the other day when I was out. The branches are kind of dried out and I don't know if they root that way (but they probably would for you). They are a popular landscape plant here and usually the red berries stay on through the winter. It is the holly I have in those nature ball ornament pictures.
I'm sending you an assortment of seeds too. :)
I will be up tonight I'm sure.

I'll probably be up late tonight. They say we are due for our first snow this week. I wonder if it will start tonight. I looked at the snow in the pictures and it brought happy feelings. We only end up shoveling about 5 to 10 times during the winter so it isn't too bad.
The only bad stuff is the rain/snow mix. Thats hard for the ol' snow blower.

I hope you won't be offended Janan...
Bob had sent me a dragon fruit cutting that's now growing but I'm not really interested in growing a whole bunch of different kinds...maybe one more though, of your choosing. Would you mind?
I would enjoy some of the holly seeds Janan...I love plants with berries on them and have a total thing for them.
I've only ever shared my Holly with Bob...infact I bought him two of his very own shrubs from the nursery this year...one of which was a hybrid!
I saw some recently at this one place but I think they were "blue girl" (my least favorite kind) and of course no male was provided to ensure pollination and berries for next year! They weren't even labelled but I just knew what they were from growing them myself.
Of course too they don't tell people they'll never see more berries unless they have a male shrub...and people just think they're cute and put out the 30 bucks! I thought they were inferior anyway to the ones I got at the nursery in the summertime. :(
Cool you'll send seeds also...I sure love them. I'll be sending you some too. Is there anything of mine you want Janan? Don't be shy. :)
Wish this snow would blow off somewhere, far away from here. http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo2.gif
I am glad you guys are not dealing with it but sorry we are! :ha:
Now you've got me all excited Janan...I love preparing a box for someone too and giving them things to make them happy. :D
So nice that you'll label everything for me. I will for you as well. Do you want any Nelumbo (pink Lotus) seeds, Janan? You can even grow them in a container filled with water...half barrels. You might not be interested though so feel free to let me know...
I'll definitely send you the 'sticks on fire' and other succulents we discussed too...plus lots more.
Nope, that birdhouse is built for tiny chickadees but Henry does land on it sometimes. It's covered with a plant too.

I like them, Janan! They're kinda cool looking.
Could you keep bringing the ends back up into the pot and burying them until they root, then snip? Would this make the pot more full looking?
I think it's a naturally kind of spindly plant isn't it? I'd like to experiment with it a bit. I want mine to be full looking like my thanksgiving cactus.
Do you fertilize yours?
My cutting from Bob is really doing well here and growing another...leaf? Is that what they're called? I don't even know...arm or branch? I just know it's growing! :ha:
Have you ever harvested some fruits or know people that have? Can't remember if Patty did on hers yet...
That's where my plant originally came from was Patty. :) Bob then shared it with me too.
Are the fruits really tasty? Is there meat to them or just many juicy seeds?

Jananas Bananas
12-05-2010, 08:21 PM
I think you can cut the segments up into several pieces to make several plants. I don't know what they are called, they look like octopus arms so I just call them arms (I'm so technical).
The one I ate was a brilliant pink on the outside and white on the inside. They are filled with tiny black seeds but you just eat it seed and all. I saved a few seeds and they sprouted for me very easily, but they withered and died really quick. It was about the size of a good size grapefruit but oval in shape. Kinda tasted like a melon to me and about that texture.
All the wider ones coming right out of the pot are the original pieces. The ends calloused over and they all seemed to branch out from the sides.
Some are larger than others and some grow faster than others. Those root thingys are the grabbers, which I think are roots also.
I think even the growers trim them, so I'm going to say yes you can cut them back and maintain the size. I have just let mine go wild, which is probably not the best way to do it. ~J

I just wondered if pruning them would make them more full...
Do they ever grow more than one octopus arm from one end? :ha:
Like two at a time?
Or do they just grow one single arm right after the other? I mean do they branch out? It sounds like they might by what you described. ;)
I think the fruit sounds delicious, Janan...
When do these plants produce fruit and is there usually a lot of them at one time?

Sherry,
Thanks for pointing out I never gave my name. It is Tom. I updated my profile. You can call me anything you want though.
All this talk of Dragon fruit makes me jealous. There is a place online that I was tempted to order some plants from but they have a minimum charge of $25.00 and my order I wanted to place was $24.99. So I have yet to order from them.
I'm sorry I don't post a lot. You are right. I surf a lot and just don't get back to the thread too often. Plus I tend not to say much unless I feel I have something to contribute.
Jananas Bananas
12-05-2010, 09:29 PM
I just took four segments off for you and you can't even tell I did it. The one kind is slimmer and more gangly than the others, but it has 5 separate arms coming of the original stump and those each have two or three segments to them.
Gosh Sherry, I really don't know. I think Richard and Tony both grow them and they would be better to ask than I (I'm sure a lot of others as well). I know Tony has posted pictures of his fruit several times and I think they are in the harvest thread if you want to check them out. If I recall Patty's only had one fruit on it after several years - but by golly she did it! I just like growing things that are edible, or I can cook with them, or steep them for tea. I have eaten poke salit and drank dandelion tea - and those are weeds! :ha: Not that that's all I have by any means.
I am in the process of wrapping your plants now. :) I wish I could see your face when you open it. hee hee hee

Thanks again Tom, for replying. :waving:
Gosh Janan, you're really getting me excited about this little package of yours. :goteam:
I'll be like a kid in a candy store. I'll be sure to show shots of all of it when I get it potted up after it arrives. ;)
The dragon fruit sounds too nice and now I'm kinda looking forward to having a few different kinds. You're welcome to mine too Janan...it's a Roger Meyer cutting. :D
Yes, I thought Patty's fruit was way cool, now that I remember. She has one huge plant and warned me about letting mine grow wild! :ha:

Tom I know you weren't really talking to me, but I got one of mine from SuperMario here on the org. You might see if he has any right now. He was very very reasonable!
Sherry, you will be getting a piece of that one too. It is American beauty. You can google it and see what the fruit looks like.
I will take a picture of it all spread out on the floor before I pack it in the package. You won't be able to tell what it is of course! :ha:
Yes, I remember seeing Patty moving a banana of hers with a fork lift. I laughed so hard! You guys just don't know the pleasure I get out of reading on this forum and looking at everyone's pictures. :) ~J

Oh I'm so excited Janan! :08:
That one sounds kinda cool. I think I need to water my little dragon fruit cutting. It's kind of dry and looks like it could use some moisture...
Do these plants like a lot of water or no? Are they a cactus? I really don't know much about them...maybe that's why I wasn't so interested in growing them.
Thanks so much for thinking of me Janan, and for being so generous with your stuff. You can expect me to be the same. ;)
Looking forward to seeing your shot later...
I do like the look of the cutting Bob sent. It's so thick and strong looking. :D
It was only one piece he sent so obviously that's all that's needed to grow into another plant. I gotta transplant mine soon.
Be right back. Gonna water and shower my dry little dragon fruit plant...

Sherry, here's a question for you. With holly bushes, how tall do they get? Do you need to trim them all the time to keep them say under 4 feet? Also, they are evergreens right?
The Hollyberry Lady
12-05-2010, 10:48 PM
Oh gawd...don't get me talking about Hollies! :ha:
Yes Tom, Hollies are evergreens. You need a male and female shrub to get berries on the female shrubs only. One male shrub however is capable of pollinating up to 8 females! :D
My favorite hybrid variety called "blue princess" is capable of reaching 15 feet high!!!
They can be kept pruned and shaped to however tall you would like them and I wouldn't say they have to be pruned anymore than any other shrub but Hollies are slow growing so during the growing season you could likely prune once every few weeks to once a month. ;)
Here's the one I sent Bob in New Jersey...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/329.jpg
They are a shrub that will never disappoint and they're well worth the investment.

That's a chunk with roots on it and a bud. I know the bud will fall off, but you should be able to get several starts on that if you take the segments apart! :) Or not, whatever you want to do with it.
You really have to ASK???? You bought it! I am just tickled that you thought of me when you did that. :)
Had a phone call.
I think dragon fruit are cactus family, though not the desert kind. They like more water like the holiday cactus and the night blooming cereus which looks all the world like a white dragon fruit blossom to me. That's another hanging down one. Check that one out!
Have to go get another batch of plants! :) ~J
The Hollyberry Lady
12-05-2010, 11:21 PM
Just to be clear Tom...
The male Holly shrubs will never have fruits on them...only the females will. The female shrubs will never have berries however, if there is no male to pollinate them. :(
That's why holiday hollies that are sold under false pretenses are so lame, because the card tells you that you can plant it out in spring...which is true enough...but they fail to tell you that because you have no male shrub to go with your female, you'll never see even one berry the following season!
Furthemore, they don't even tell you which kind you have so that you may bother to find the matching male next season on your own! It's ridiculous, really.
I only buy the best quality shrubs from a nursery that's been around for over 40 years! They even come with a one year warranty and they'll replace it within one year if it doesn't thrive!!!
: o
Of course they do thrive though and they are the best shrubs you could ever have. :D
Don't buy blue girl if you can get the hybrid blue princess. You can see by this next shot of Bob's shrub I sent him that it is ladened with ripe berries...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/539.jpg
Janan...
I'm nearly bursting for joy about your plants you're sharing with me. They all sound so great and fantastic. How did I get so lucky?! :08:
I don't know how Blue Girl or Blue Princess Holly would fair in Texas because these ones like a frosty cold and snowy winter, but they may well adapt. I plan on rooting more cuttings next year but they are slow rooting and growing...
I have one blue princess cutting that rooted for me but hasn't grown much up top. It sits in my window though looking exactly as it looked the day I cut it...6 months ago!
I expect it to grow a bit in Spring but it has developed roots which is an excellent sign. They are tough cuttings to root and they take awhile too. My two kinds of Hollies grow more in the late summer early fall I find, so maybe the cutting won't take off until next late summer. We'll see...
"Blue Princess" is the most expensive to buy but well worth the money. You won't be disappointed Tom, and they are so cheerful in the wintertime. It's one of the few varieties that has berries on it all year round.
Janan...would you like some of my holly seeds to experiment with in the package I'll do up for you?

I have some beautiful bushes, and I know you love shrubbery. Would you like some cuttings of any of them? This is one of my favorites it is Loropetalum, it has glorious colors. This is it right now in the fall.
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=39169&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=39169)

Janan that is a stunningly beautiful bush!
Of course I want cuttings, and come hell or high water, I'll get at least one to root! :ha:
Thanks for having faith in me. ;)
If your shrub is like my Hollies though, it shouldn't be pruned until Spring, because it promotes winter damage. Just a thought.
Those pictures are gorgeous and I wouldn't want you to ruin or damage your shrub, taking cuttings at possibly the wrong time of year, for me. :( Maybe we should wait on that one...
So I might hit the hay soon but not sure. It's no big deal what I have to do tomorrow...although I will have to appear briefly before a justice of the peace, just to make some corrections to some documents.
Things have suddenly become totally quiet here...all day and night long! The wonders never cease! It took going to court though and laying charges, to get respect and peace.
Anyway, I'll be up for at least another hour and maybe hour and 1/2...

You may be right about the bushes. The only thing I wonder about is how hardy they will be for you. I just want to make sure your box is nice and full. :) I am about halfway done and the box is probably 3/4 full.
I am glad you finally have some peace and quiet. It must be awful to try and put up with that kind of nonsense going on all the time.
I am running out of steam. I will probably knock off the plant gathering and pick it back up in the morning. I guess I'd better shut it down and shut up! Maybe we can both get wound down enough to get a few hours sleep tonight!

I could always keep the shrub potbound but buried in the garden, and bring it inside each year for winter protection. We'll see in spring but good you'll wait to cut them. ;)
Yeah the peace and quiet has amazingly come since court on Friday...her first appearance. I knew it would take something drastic to make her stop and that my mom & I shouldn't let it go. Bullying is very frowned upon these days, and so is harassment as well.
Yes, I should get some sleep and I will, but the truth is I'm wound. I have to get up at 6:30 am!

Sherry,
I wonder if your cutting is like my pear cutting. I hear for some pears and roses (which I guess pears are related to) can take up to 6 months to root.
I'm still new to this gardening thing, but could it be that you need some sort of nitrogen to get some new leaf growth?
When I finally see roots on mine I plan on using some hydroponic fertilizer a very low concentration to encourage leaf growth.
BTW, mine has little white dots on the cutting under water. Are those the beginnings of root? My cutting looks kind of like a salted pretzel stick. This is the first cutting I've ever done.
The Hollyberry Lady
12-06-2010, 12:57 AM
Well Tom, I think it's more to do with temperature and time of year...the cuttings will normally actively grow at the same time the mother plant is in active vegetative growth also...that's why cuttings are best taken during this time. ;)
No fertilizer at all is needed for cuttings until there are actual roots growing because if there are no roots, the cutting will be unable to uptake the nutrients, so they will be useless to apply. :(
You are right though Tom, and Hollies love a fertilizer rich in nitrogen. My cutting is well fed and although the leaf bud is swelled and partially split open on one side, it is not quite ready for active growth yet. It knows when the time is right so I just wait patiently...
I may try to trick it though and put it under my light system. It may not be able to resist growing for me once it gets regular strong & steady light. Then again...why not leave well enough alone. I have faith it'll grow because it looks so well after all this time, and it now has roots too! :D
Yes Tom, the white dots are the beginnings of roots and where they will grow out of. Just watch and enjoy...

As you might have noticed, I'm not a patient guy. How long until these dots turn into actual roots ;)
I agree with you about giving the plant food when it doesn't have roots. Mine is still in regular water. I haven't given it anything. I'm still waiting for roots for that. Is it bad I don't have any leaves on my cutting? I do have some bud nodes.
The Hollyberry Lady
12-06-2010, 01:09 AM
Is this a Holly cutting you're referring to, Tom? If so, no it's not bad that it has no leaves...in fact it's recommended!
Keep in mind too that even when a cutting gets some roots on it, the fertilizer solution should be weak and very mild or it is easy to kill a newly rooted cutting quickly. :(
As for how long roots will take since you now have the dots...hard to say. Let me know what it is for sure...

All links seem to point to planting the cutting in soil to root....
The Hollyberry Lady
12-06-2010, 01:30 AM
Yeah of course they'll tell you this and that but I'd say if you have white dots then you're in business Tom. These nodes are where the roots will grow from.
The truth is though, I've never actually rooted pear cuttings...but have sprouted pear seeds. ;)
I would experiment using several methods, and discover for yourself which works best...
I have had many cuttings that supposedly couldn't root in anything but soil, root just fine in a glass of water. I bet your cuttings will sprout roots soon for you, Tom. :08:

My watermelon died :( Now I need to start a new one. It seems they only get so big and then they just keel over. My zucchini has two plants that sprouted in the same container so I might move one to the bucket that I had my banana pup that died.
Oh, one of the tomatoes looked like it was starting to ripen but it had BER pretty bad so I pulled it.

Sucks about the blossom end rot problem you're having, Tom! :( I'd be so upset if they were mine.
I don't know...
Try some epsom salts and even 'Tums' anti-acid tablets which have been known to help with the problem.
With watermelon, you need a huge pot so this could be why it dies on you after it reaches a certain size. They're tough to grow indoors.
I have some new tomato seedlings currently growing for me and my pepper plants are all still producing indoors too. ;)
Good luck with your basement garden.

I've grown hydroponic watermelon indoor before. I used a drip system then, right now I'm using a passive system. With the tomatoes I put in a teaspoon or so of epsom salt with every gallon of water for the tomatos. I'm thinking it is the fluctuations in the water level...
Have you tried hydroponics? Your container gardening skills are superb, I love seeing pictures of your stuff.

Oh I didn't realize you were growing hydroponically, Tom! Very cool. I've never done it personally but have seen it done up close and personal. Neat that you're involved in that. ;)
Thanks, about my container gardening skills. I nearly called myself 'container gardener' instead of hollyberry lady. :ha:
So did you actually harvest a watermelon inside before, Tom? What was it like? How big?

Hi ALL!
Just got back from a quick out of state trip! I'm a pooped pup! Wish your Mom a happy birthday from all of us! :birthdaynana:
Sorry, didn't mean to make you feel abandoned, Sherry.
Stopped at a couple of Lowe's on my trip and they both had the "Christmas" Thanksgiving cactus marked down. Neither had any of the yellow, one had a solid red which was pretty. Most of the blossoms were droopy looking and the buds were falling off. I didn't buy any more, but may have to check out few of my locals and see if they have theirs marked down.
Have a great day tomorrow!

Hey, you guys! :03:
I was beginning to wonder if your internet was down, Janan. So glad you got away for a nice little trip. I like daytrips and weekends getaways.
I was going through Janan withdrawal! :ha: I guess I was just bored and wanted to chat and nobody was around but Jack!
I have enjoyed talking with Tom though, and would like to find out more about his hydroponic growing set-up. What are you using for the basin Tom, and how big is it? How long have you been growing this way and what do you like best about it?
Well today was my mom's birthday and we had a very nice time out. Went shopping after lunch and didn't take in a movie because we have court again tomorrow and my mom said she was too nervous to sit through a movie right now.
The truth is, this is really doing a number on my mom...the 'neighbor' assaulting us and going to court. It is a truly difficult and gruelling process. :( I'm young and I'm finding it tough so I know it's taking a toll on her more than me.
We have to attend court again in the morning, to finish up the last of the corrections to our documents...
What happened was we had her name wrong because we only heard the last name a few times...but it was incorrect. We now have the right name but have had to repeat the whole entire process again because of the mistake!
Tomorrow we will have to give testimony in front of the judge again about what happened but the 'neighbor' won't be there thankfully. We did this already but have to do it again as a court formality. By the end of tomorrow though we'll be back where we need to be and moving forward. :D
Gonna start a new thread and show some adorable birds I saw at the petstore today. Look for it a bit later...
Here's some pics of our snow today, just outside my place...

He's an African Grey and he really took to me. I talked to him for 15 minutes and he let me scratch his head twice. The petstore guy was totally jealous and said he's been trying to scratch his head for days but he wouldn't let him! :ha: This bird just loved me and was captivated by my bright pink sony camera. I let him bite it because he was so curious. Here he was playing...

I fell in love with him, but of course I had to be loyal to my little Henry so I couldn't get him. Plus he was 2000 bucks!
There were other cuties too, but I'll show them in the new thread...
Anyway, Janan I hope you saw my Christmas lights I posted for you? Scroll back in this thread because I posted them here too I'm pretty sure.

Yes, Grandma used to tell us, "don't eat yellow snow!!!" :ha:
Ingredients
1 gallon snow
1 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
2 cups milk
Directions
When it starts to snow, place a large, clean bowl outside to collect the flakes. When full, stir in sugar and vanilla to taste, then stir in just enough milk for the desired consistency. Serve at once. (Grandma would just go outside and scoop up CLEAN snow)
Variations:
use chocolate milk
use your favorite soda
sprinkle in some kool-aid mix and have the snow ice cream flavored
substituted Rum for the vanilla and sprinkled in some coconut...yumm

I know...I should be in bed too, but I just can't seem to shut down either and stop feeling anxious and worrying. It's horrid to go through this, especially at this time of year when we should be feeling joy and happiness. Far from it. :(
I'll look forward to seeing your shots tomorrow Janan. I might take some after court tomorrow of the main part of the Thames River downtown. It should be gorgoeus with all this snow. If my mom feels like it, that is.
Don't think we'll be too long tomorrow because they know we've already done this and they sympathize with us having to repeat it again for the sake of formality. It must be done though so we gotta do what we gotta do.
Good thing the defendant lives on a different floor than us. She lives in the basement below us, and we are on the mainfloor...where the assault took place.
You're likely gone to bed Janan and I am rambling on anyway, but you'll read it in the morning. Hope you sleep well though, if you are still up. You mentioned how tired you are.

Midnight snack, eh?
We are going to start getting into a crazy mode here. We have the Christmas dinner at the armory on Saturday as well as the Welcome back for the rest of the Company A troops from Iraq. The following weekend will be a Yellow Ribbon program all weekend in San Antonio, then the following weekend is Christmas and the one after is New Years.
I still have to finish up my Christmas shopping. I am dreading it and have been putting it off. I am usually done by September or no later than October! Hi Guys! :waving:
I got home at noon-ish and everything went well in court this morning, but it was real tough. It was closed court but they didn't separate my mom and I this time, although we both took the stand and gave our separate account of what happened.
It was tough and we were thoroughly questioned even more so this second time, but our case was approved again and charges will once again be laid with the correct name this time. :D
Now on the 21st we will go back so she can be issued new charges with her proper name and serve her to appear on the new date they will set.
In the meantime, I'm just relaxing and trying to feel better after such a tough day. It's been crazy but we did get home by lunchtime so this was a good thing.
Hope you guys are having a great day and night. Just hanging out relaxing tonight, and not doing anything too special. Might make something to eat in a bit because I haven't had dinner yet. Too upset earlier to want to eat.

Janan, guess what?!!!
I just checked my mailbox a few minutes ago and there was a card in there saying something was at the post office...a parcel!
I guess it came this morning while I was at the courthouse. I could have picked it up this afternoon but I only checked my mail a few minutes ago.
However...
Although we have no mail delivery on weekends the post office is still open, even on Sundays, and I'm going to go get your box tomorrow Janan! ;)
Don't worry...it was on a warm heated truck and then dropped off to a warm heated post office. I bet things will be fine but I'll let you know.
You must have sent the box via "Express Post" for it to get here so fast. I didn't realize it before but you did mention something about three days. The only way it could make it that fast is if you sent it the more expensive way...which I intend to do with your box also. :D
I'm getting excited about what you sent and can't wait to get it. My mom and I might go visit the cemetery tomorrow but we're not sure yet. If we do, I'll pick up the box on the way home. If not, I'll still go get it anyway.;)

I'll be up until past midnight est. I have some stuff to buy but I have to wait until the beginning of my credit cards next billing cycle begins which is at midnight tonight. Some of the stuff I need to buy I need shipped tomorrow and I have to leave the cc to my wife to order stuff so I can't do my ordering at work. It stinks my finances are this tight, but it could be MUCH worse.
The good thing about all my problems right now is that it makes me look at them in relation to others who are in much worse shape. So in some ways, this is one of my best Christmases because every day I'm thinking of those that are worse off than me.

MMM carrot muffins. Sure would like some... I'll just pretend to eat them. It is better for my diet that way anyway.
I refuse to use a real credit card. The one I use is my American express so I am forced to get it paid off every month. I haven't used a real credit card in 2 years or so. The problem is that right now is that I'm transitioning from one job to another and the new job has a really good cafeteria so thats $40/mo I shouldn't be spending. I have to stop being tempted to eat there. My last job had a food truck that would come by and the food wasn't great so the temptation was much less. I think my current problems are because I won't use a credit card to put off my debts. So in the short term it is painful, but like you said, the alternative would likely cause long term pain. I should be out of this mess in the spring when I don't have to pay so much to heat the house. I just have to push through this rough patch and make modifications to my life style until then. This is why I didn't want to spend more than $20 for some dragon fruit plants the other day.
That reminds me. I don't know if I responded to your earlier post about my hydroponics. I grow year round, I grow only things I can eat. My hydroponics system is the one thing I don't cut back on. I could probably save $30/mo on the electric bill if I stopped my hydroponics. As for pictures, I've posted links to my webcam occasionally. You could find it by going to the link in my signature if you are really interested.
The Hollyberry Lady

I'm not surprised to hear about how much you spend in the cafeteria...I read that most people don't add up how much they spend on coffees and donuts, ect. and that it adds up to a huge amount of money from week to week! :(
A bag lunch is better for you and easier on the pocket book too. Good that you're at least aware that you gotta cut back, because a lot of people don't even care and just keep shelling out money everyday on take-out food. It adds up quickly, that's for sure.
Not to mention the damage to the heart and arteries!
Sounds like a good idea Tom...making some lifestyle changes until you get control of things
again. ;)

What kinds of vegetables have you experimented and had success with using your hydroponic system? Do you find the plants are extra large and vigorous?
Do you still have problems with mites, even though you're growing in water?
Muffins are awesome! ;)

The most successfull I think was cucumbers. I have grown lots of things. Of all the stuff I've tried to grow, I've only been able to actually get the following to the point where I could harvest:
beans
cucumbers
Peppers
Tomatoes
watermelon
zucchini
I'm really a very bad gardener, I lack the nurturing nature of most gardeners. I generally let the plants fight for their lives. I don't have a heck of a lot of experience with gardening, so I can't really tell if they are extra large and vigorous. Though my roma tomato plant is about 4 feet tall right now with over 70 tomatoes on it (almost all with BER ;P)
Edit: I was just down there. The tomato plant is now 5 feet tall, and it appears that adding epsom seems to have stopped a lot of the ber as only about 50 percent of the fruit have it. It seems limited to the first fruits and isn't happening much on the newer ones.
BTW, if you see a tomato in the left hand corner in a glass punch bowl, that is one I started from a seed I saved. It's the first time I've tried to grow a fruit from a saved seed. The plant is doing well, but I won't call it a success until I get a fully ripe fruit.

I generally let the plants fight for their lives.
:ha: I like to do that sometimes too.
When I was still attempting hydroponics, I noticed that the mint I was working with was tiny, but powerful. It rooted very quickly as compared to dirt grown mint. My basil did pretty good, grew better than it did outside. Both had an extreme flavor, unmatched by anything I've tried before.
I know it varies by plant, and by which nutrients you use, but anything is possible with hydroponics!

I don't feel tired either, but I do need to wake up early to finish off my new mailbox post and mailbox planter. :08:
I'm rebuilding the whole thing because 1) it fell apart 2) the post was rotting 3) a nearby sprinkler head was a few inches underground, and watering nothing even if it was above ground, and 4) the mailbox was tilting into the street.
I got a bag of concrete to make a good base for the planter. I'm gonna do it the right way this time. :ha:

One time I was skating on a lake with a friend and she went on this one area and we heard a loud cracking noise and then saw the ice split!
Needless to say, we got the hell out of there in one quick hurry! :ha: It was actually really scary and I was terrified we might fall in!
It's actually happened to some people before so you gotta be careful. There's an outdoor rink downtown in Victoria Park that's free to skate on and not over a lake, so it's a bit safer. ;)

I'm starting to get tired, but I have to buy a few more things on-line before I sleep. I just spent about 2 hours looking over past credit card invoices to find out what the last day of the billing period is, and if they put charges on it that were purchased that day.
Apparently my billing period ends on the 13th if there are 31 days in the month, or the 12th if there are 30. Not sure about when it would be in February. I also looked and saw they don't put charges on that were purchased on the closing date.
The Hollyberry Lady
12-13-2010, 01:48 AM
Never make purchases when you're tired...kinda like never go grocery shopping when you're hungry! :ha:
Make sure you're clear Tom about how the billing cycle works for that card. You don't need any surprises this time of year.
I won't be nosey and ask what you're ordering online because it's none of my business but I'm so paranoid because of all the horror stories I've heard about using your credit card to make purchases online, that I've never been able to bring myself to actually do it.
I have used paypal twice though...once to buy some Oriental Lily bulbs and the other to buy a computer program for two years...driver detective. ;)
Well it looks like I'll be staying up the latest tonight so I hope you sleep well too, Tom. Quit spending money and go to bed! :ha:

Nope, I'm still up. I don't mind saying what I'm buying. I'm buying new roters and pads for my car. I pretty much do all my shopping on-line. Usually you can get the best deals. I'm buying genuine parts from the manufacturer so I should have any problem with quality.
I need the parts by this weekend so I have to order now. If I went to my local honda dealer the parts would be about $50 or so more.

Yes, I saw your goody package from Beth!!! It all sounds yummy and beautiful packaging. Maybe you will get mine today or tomorrow. I hope so, I don't want to fret about it anymore.
Did you get some of that clean snow yesterday for snow ice cream?
Looks like the northeast U.S. is getting that dump of snow that you guys had last week. A football stadium's ceiling collapsed onto it's field this weekend from the weight of the snow.

Good morning and Good afternoon, People! :ha:
Nope Janan, we are not snowed in, thankfully. It even looks like the sun might shine! Not sure of my exact plans yet today but it will likely involve plants, somehow some way. I gotta make some business calls this morning but other than that, nothing's pressing.
Don't worry about your package Janan...it will be just fine and I will get it no problem. It just takes time, that's all. It might not show up until Wednesday even, but this is perfectly normal and especially with this time of year. ;)
Haven't indulged in your snow ice cream recipe just yet, but likely after Christmas I will. It does sound so cool and I must try it.
I think I'll be around today, on and off...unless I decide to go out later, which I might. Wouldn't mind going over to the mall for a bit and picking up a few odds and ends but I'll see. It's pretty cold out so I'm in no rush to get out there.

I am a natural worrier, sorry! I think I am more worried about it getting held up in customs or something than anything else. I just put Christmas gifts of garden decorations on the customs forms. And they wanted me to list a quantity and value. Sooooo......... that was wrong because I just guessed. :( I know I had to list every single item when I was mailing packages to Iraq and always brought a list. I didn't think about that with yours, DUH on my part. I just keep thinking about the one you sent to Howard. ~J

Happy Tuesday, Gang! :waving:
Janan, aren't you even going to join my new thread that I started about the gifts you sent me? I feel like I'm all alone there. :ha:
I'll post later there too and let you know what looks like it will make it and what won't. Obviously waiting until Spring is the best way to insure things won't be frostbitten. :(
Seeds are ok to still be mailed throughout winter though, so I can still send you and Cam some of them in the meantime. I would have been devastated if the plants and cuttings I'm going to send for Cam and you were damaged by frost! Especially when they assured me they'd be warm and ok!
I'm going to call the post office this morning and explain to them that we were both assured the package would be ok but that it wasn't and in fact some things were dead! I'm going to request that they reimburse the money for shipping and then I can send it right back to you Janan. Why not let them pay for their mistake? ;)
It's another frosty morning here in London, at -21°C...-0°F with the windchill!!! The sun is going to shine though, it looks like this morning, so that's a good thing. :)
Hope you guys have a great day.

Did all the succulents die (other than the dragon fruit)? Most of my succulents are fairly hardy and stay out all year round, but the Thanksgiving cactus :( are houseplants and raised in ideal conditions, so I can see how they would struggle in undesirable circumstances!

So is everyone ready for Christmas or what?
I still have some things to do yet but will get them done soon. It's going to be a pretty low key Christmas for us this year...a turkey, some candles, and midnight mass will have to suffice.
I might make some cookies this weekend...shortbreads with green & red maraschino cherries on top. I don't want to get fat over winter though so my bike tires pop and deflate from the pressure come Spring! :ha: I like to eat stuff in moderation so I can eat whatever I want to and not gain weight.

So how was your weekend? I gotta get up early so I don't know if I'll be up past midnight tonight. ;)
I sure am enjoying all the stuff you sent Janan. The succulents are all awesome.
Hope to chat more if you guys are still around.
No need to drool Tom...I see that dragon fruit wants to spread all over the place and it roots constantly so it will be easy to share a piece with you in Spring. No big deal. ;)
So what are you guys up to tonight? I've been googling some information about how to care for an Agave and found out they don't like to be overwatered, or they can rot!
I guess they take 15 years to flower and are often referred to as 'century plant'.
Looking so forward to watching mine grow...

Beautiful plant peeks! The melody is very relaxing too! Those are some of my favorite pictures of yours that you have included in it!
I really need to get to sleep early tonight too. I didn't get much sleep at all this weekend in a strange bed. It hard enough to fall asleep on my own.
I'm glad you are enjoying the succulents and cacti. I tried to send the most colorful and unusual that I own. ~J

I love everything you sent Janan, and think you are incredibly kind. ;)
I have a huge thing for colorful and unique succulents so you couldn't have set me up with better cuttings than you did. :D
Yes, I totally know what you mean about having a hard enough time getting to sleep in your own bed...let alone someone else's! :ha:
I can lay awake the whole night in a hotel room or at a friend's place even. No fun.
Glad you liked my video Janan. I might make another one soon. I want to make the text bigger next time though.
Hope you get a good night's rest tonight. I'm feeling tired a bit and will likely fall right asleep fast...hopefully.

Hi everyone.
Zac I stayed up and looked at the eclipse for a few minutes. It was so cool because I have never seen one before. I got an amaryllis bulb today from Lowe's they are all 60% off so it was only $3.99. I wish I could have gotten more LOL. The one I got was 'Apple Blossom' I also have one called 'Minerva' hopefully i'll get flowers but if i dont, there is always next year

So Zac, did you take any shots of that eclipse? It'd sure be cool to see some...
Hi Tom :waving:
I have a terrible headache and trying to get rid of it. :( Tried taking something for it earlier but it didn't help much because it's back. I'm overtired and exhausted though so I might go to bed early tonight.
So, did you get those car parts you ordered Tom?
Janan, how are you doing girl? I've been thinking about you with so many of your cuttings around me. They're all doing just great, by the way.
Cam, so cool about your new "apple blossom" amaryllis bulb! ;) Hope it does well for you. Have you got it potted up yet? I have an amaryllis called "charisma" and it's tri-colored. It develops baby bulblets after a couple years that grow off the main bulb.

Parts came in today. I have to schedule an apointment to have them installed. Maybe I'll go for next friday. The earliest the guy I called could do it would be tuesday or wed.

Yeah Tom, they're probably real busy on account of Christmas, like everywhere else. Good you got the parts though. ;)
Unfortunately, I'm too tired to stay on much longer and may be hitting the hay even earlier than I planned. I still have a headache too. :(
I'll be back tomorrow in the later morning. Have a great night everyone. Chat soon...

Too funny, all this talk about air conditioners and being hot! I wish.
Gotta run a few errands later on but thought I'd drop in and say hello and see how everyone's doing...

I'm hoping my brother can come over again. We usually buy streamers and stuff for new years.
I''l proably be around tonight. I have my work christmas party for a few hours and then probably a few hours drive home in the snow....

Hi All! :waving: Been busy trying to get this last minute stuff together. We are actually celebrating our Christmas here tomorrow then at my Mom and Dad's on Saturday. So it's been crazy!
Hope everyone is staying warm, or cool as the case may be. We had record high's in the 80's here the last two days but a cool front came through so we are in the 60's right now. It's supposed to be a little bit colder by Saturday - so we'll see - no white Christmas here! (not that I was expecting one) :)

So nice to hear from you Janan! :)
Great that you're beginning your Christmas celebration tomorrow! That should be fun...I bet you'll be munching on lots of Christmas goodies too. I've been gobbling shortbread cookies for the last hour it seems...with more of Beth's hot chocolate. Only had a sandwich for dinner so I was kinda hungry.
Hope you enjoy tomorrow Janan. I'm sure enjoying your cuttings and everything is doing well. Thanks again for all the great stuff you sent. I think I'll list your seeds in the thread tonight as well...
So I wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year if I'm not around much and neither are you guys. I'll try to log on when I can.

I try to pop in to when I can. This time of year there is so much going on with the Guard and family stuff.
What have you been doing Sherry? Still going back and forth to court? I know you have an other one coming up next week right, then will that be the end or only the beginning?

Unfortunately it's just the beginning Janan. :(
I had court yesterday and I have to go back to yet another hearing to testify again on all days, but Christmas eve day! Oh joy oh bliss!
This is where I'll be spending my Christmas...

On January 7th, it all begins again!
Someday it will all be over, but who knows when. If you want anymore particulars, pm me...otherwise this is all I should say publically on the matter. I've been advised not to talk about it too much until after it's all over.
I totally understand about you being busy Janan...me too. It's a busy time of year so we'll chat when we can...no worries. :)
Going to turn in before 11:30 tonight so I can get a good night's rest. Not feeling super hot these days.
Hope you get a good night's rest too Janan, and everyone. :waving:

You've got that right Janan, it's real tough to stay happy when things are the way they are right now...but as Jack once pointed out, there are always people worse off than us. ;)
At least I have a home and food to eat...some people don't even have that at Christmas time. :(
We'll make the best of Christmas regardless of having to go to court, so not to worry. ;) It'll all work out ok but it's just a difficult time right now...especially for my mom.
Sleep well Janan if you decide not to post anymore tonight. I might be around for another half hour or so...
Thanks for your support Janan. Hope you have fun tomorrow. :D
Gotta get a drink...

Yes, Jack is so right about that! Give your Mom a hug from me!
Tomorrow I will be taking many pictures, maybe I can throw some on the Christmas thread. I'm not sure I want to show the mess though! :ha: There will be paper and trash everywhere!
Yes, this better be my last post for tonight, to try to wind down and get some sleep so I can get up and go ninety miles an hour in the morning to finish up.
