I would say judging from the points and the position of the bloom that it is the Schlumbergera truncata Thanksgiving Cactus. I'm just going by the information in that link though. Mine is actually a Thanksgiving cactus also. ~J

It is convenient Cam...especially at dinnertime! :ha:
Well damn it Janan, they lied to me!
I suppose it doesn't matter much because I love it so, but why do they tell people things that aren't true? For four years now I've been believing and telling people it's a Christmas cactus. Shared cuttings and everything.
I sometines don't always get email notification everytime someone posts in this thread. Weird, eh? That happen to you guys? Not all the time for me, but just sometimes. Janan's post didn't come though, but Cam's did. Weird.

You know sometimes I miss many comments on threads I'm subscribed to, then I will read a recent post and think how did I miss all these. I don't know why. It's probably something on my end rejecting them or something.
Did you see the statement right under the "Thanksgiving" title?
Thanksgiving Cacti
The plants most often sold in Canada as "Christmas Cacti" (by which name they sell best) are Schlumbergera truncata cultivars.
Is your specialty nursery there or did you get it online out of country? If you do a lot of business with them and you want to, you could mention it to them. The guy that published that article is a member of the Epiphytic Plant Study Group (epiphytes.co.uk (http://epiphytes.co.uk)) in England. ~J
The Hollyberry Lady
11-02-2010, 11:51 PM
It's not really a nursery I frequent, but it's right here in London and I told them I wanted a true Christmas cactus. They assured me it was.
I really think you and Alex are right though and I'm kind of pissed about it! Not that you guys are right :ha: but that they misled me.
Boy, they'll say anything for a buck. http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo2.gif
I really just wanted a snow white one and they were the only nursery that sold them. I do love it, so I won't be too disappointed but I just like to know what I am growing.
I can even throw a couple cuttings in for you too Howard, when I send the Beautyberry cuttings later...

You're right! It's all about the money. They may truly not know the difference. If they did though, that is pretty bad.
I just went to look if my tags were still on mine, and they are - It just says Zygo Cactus Wrap Mylar. Which is pretty generic I guess. But the zygomorphic would be referring to the asymmetrical flowers of the Thanksgiving Cactus? ~J
The Hollyberry Lady
11-03-2010, 12:37 AM
Sorry about that Janan...I was just starting a new thread. ;)
I think most of them honestly and truly don't know what they are selling and I've even educated a few of them on things they didn't know about the plants they had.
One nursery didn't even know that they needed to sell female Holly shrubs with their males in order for people to get berries!
I bet there were a whole lot of disappointed people that Spring with no Hollyberries on their female shrubs!
Some of them too, don't even know what they're selling and you ask if they have something and they tell you they have none at all, but when you go, there's a whole section designated just for that plant! :ha:
It's to the point now that I don't even ask because most of them are uneducated donkey's! :ha::ha:
I gotta catch some Zzzzzz's soon....

The Hollyberry Lady
11-03-2010, 01:34 PM
Well Drew yes, I agree that there are a lot of donkeys :ha: working at nurseries that really don't know diddly squat about nothing! ;)
In all fairness though, some are quite knowledgeable. ;)
Thanks for your pm..
This summer I was told by some guy at a nursery that geraniums only bloom in Springtime!
I said "really"? and acted like I had no idea! :ha:
I was just floored at the "information" they were giving to poor unsuspecting victims. I think they should have to take a course or something but they're likely only getting minimum wage and their knowledge is just general. I just do my own research so I know what I'm getting.
So many plants are mislabelled too, which can confuse things even more.
Plus too, some of the prices at nurseries are outrageous! To spend the kind of money they ask for and to not even know what you're getting is even more outrageous! http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo2.gif
That's why I love to grow from seed...and plus there's more selection & variety with seeds, as opposed to nursery plants. :)
What do you guys think? Drew, any nursery horror stories to tell? :ha:

Hi Sherry and everyone,
I looked and 3 more loquats sprouted, so I have 9 total. I forgot I left my Thanksgiving cactus outside and it received a lot of rain so it looks better. When it dries up a little I'm going to repot my Little Prince banana because 2 of them are crowding each other and both have a couple of pups under them, but the pups arent receiving enough light.

Here is a picture of the basjoo. I lost one pup and I dont know why it died. It was barely above the soil and it just died. Luckily it has a new leaf growing

Hey Sherry I just finished looking at this nursery website that had these different passion flowers. I'm going to try and get a few next year. I think only one maypop survived. It has a little growth on it so I'm at least happy that one survived at the moment. I ate another prickly pear and I'm saving the seeds for you. End of the growing season is a hard road to hoe when you are a tropical gardener in a temperate climate.
It took almost a week but the job is through.Everything is inside even those 4- 200+ lb. banana trees that were 12''-13'' in diameter at the base. . . They were a bit%h.
I'll be glad to get a greenhouse. Hope everybody has a great weekend.

Well, I gotta try and figure out this program for starters, haha, then some other homework, but nothing too serious. I might tear into my truck some more and try to fix a fuse box issue to fix my radio.:drum:
Plant-wise, I might piece together a cage to fill with leaves later when the trees in the front yard go dormant. I'm planning on using all my banana leaves for a huge cookout when the time comes; our first experiment with wrapped fish was THE best cooked fish I ever had.
Basically, chillin' at home, just the same. :ha:

Mmmmm, that's sounds so good Zac! I haven't tried using my banana leaves in cooking yet but likely will next year.
I have tons of plants to shower tomorrow morning...likely take me an hour or so. Gotta run a few errands tomorrow too but nothing serious.

Ahhahahahah! I've seen somethings in/on public transportation, but this takes the cake! The look on their faces is just... i don't even... :D
How does snow end your cycling, you don't have all-terrain tires?
Weather predictions should only be listened to if you're also crazy enough to visit a psychic, because they two are equally composed of non-sense. "You'll just get a drizzle tonight" can mean a tornado is on the way, and "Lite showers for the rest of the week" has meant a constant, week-long downpour of lions and bears.
We can sometimes go through all four seasons in a single day down here. :D

Yup, snow and cold weather sure puts me in the mood for cuddling with my boyfriend http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo4-1.gif...he'll be here later. http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo9.gif
You see how you're twisting my words? I wasn't talking about cuddling! :ha:
But I guess you will have to go trhough the hugging, cuddling, kissing, petting... and other forms until you get to what I meant. But, just because I care for you, I fear that you won't make it in time this winter and that cuddling phase will just be too long for any warm effect to be appreciated. :bananas_b
Btw. it's 72/55F here (day and night). A new, never broken record. From my own experience, the warmer it gets before the winter, the more drastic winter will come after that. Sheesh.
Went out, enjoyed the weather though...

Very cool, Zac! I hope you know you are welcome to pups from my banana plants anytime you want...just ask. I think you said you didn't want too many more though?
I tried some of your Loquat jam and mint-chocolate tea again recently Zac....totally delicious! :08: I even shared some with my mom and she enjoyed too. ;)

So how's everyone's weekend going? Mine's going ok, and no snow yet! Yipppeee! As a matter of fact I was out cycling this morning, in the sunshine! Took some more shots of my Beautyberry shrub today as well...

"Mutsu" apples are my most favorite! They're a pale yellow-ish green color with a blush of red on one side. To say they are sweet & delicious, is putting it mildly. They are just fantastically superb and I can't wait to get some!
Here's what a "Mutsu" apple looks like...

Yeah the "Caerulea" seeds take about three weeks to a month, to pop. If they don't germinate however, I'll be sending you some of my fresh seeds.
Wonder what's up with your "Incense" plant? Sucks it's not working out for ya. :(

The Hollyberry Lady

I think what's happening is normal, Cam. ;)
Last winter my caerulea vine was dormant but when Spring hit, it began to grow new sprouts and leaves everywhere.
Give it a shot of some fertilizer...it will likely enjoy it. Mine did.
What size pot is it in & how big of a vine is it? My Incense vine is outside in my garden, but buried deep, & in a sheltered spot. It's an experiment to see if it returns in Spring...
Yippeeeeeeeee if it does!!! :goteam:

Honey, there are several grammar mistakes in your post, but I won't go into it just yet. For the record, Slovak. ;) Not Slovakian. This is not some Asian country ending with -stan (Afghanistan, Kyrgysztan, Uzbekistan...), so we can't end on -an (Afghan...). :ha:
You know, I would actually wanna see your boyfriend try (or just see him). It's difficult to say the outcome,... but I know, where the odds are good and where they're less than satisfactory. :ha:
Sure, we don't know what big girls do with their boyfriends. Funny. In your post,... we were always taught that one refers to a girl-friend as girlfriend, when there's sexual subcontext in the relationship.
In other words, the relationship is... well, you know, what I mean. :ha:
Always great to learn something new.
Btw. just noticed my naners today, they are growing happily and some of them have put out 3 leaves since putting inside (1 leaf/5 days in some cases).

Willow87
11-06-2010, 09:24 PM
I think its in a 3 gallon pot, maybe a 2 gallon. Its not too tall but its kind of bushy. Would it be too late to give it some fertilizer? It was kind of unhealthy looking when I got it, so hopefully in spring it will come back stronger
The Hollyberry Lady
11-06-2010, 09:32 PM
If it's not well Cam, do not fertilize it. I just wondered if it could feel Autumn in the air and maybe it's just dropping some leaves like mine did too.
The pot size sounds good so no worries there...
If you are able to show a shot of it one morning, that'd be cool! :08:

It's not the apples themselves I'm allergic to, there's some compound that's also in bananas, peaches, pears, loquats, green beans, almonds, walnuts, and other untasted edibles. It makes my throat and gums itchy, but nothing that's gonna kill me. This magical unknown compound disappears when the food is cooked, and also vanishes when a banana ripens on the counter, so I can eat all sorts of baked goods luckily.
The Hollyberry Lady
11-06-2010, 09:40 PM

Cameron I think you passion vine will come back in the Spring, so even if it turns all yellow and loses it's leaves - don't throw it away. Mine always die back to nothing and come back with a vengeance then.
Oh yeah, and there is a mint (chocolate mint) that makes a wonderful chocolate mint tea - you just pick the leaves off and steep them in your hot water, and sweeten to taste. It is yummy and it smells really good too!

I don't know what's up with it. Bob suggested that I've been keeping it too wet over summer, so I let it dry out but it never made any progress. It gets a maximum of 4 leaves before they die, and the stalk always dies before the leaf itself.
It is shorter than when I first got it from Bob.
I repotted it when I sensed something was wrong, but it wasn't root bound when I took it out, and it hasn't done better since. The only thing left I can think to do is drench it to see if I haven't been giving it enough water, but I'm hesitant to do so over winter and indoors.

Tabasco peppers, salt, vinegar, and aged for 3 years in white oak barrels. Also, all of Tabasco's pepper plants are grown from seeds out of the closely-controlled pollination off the Avery Island grown tabasco peppers to make sure they don't lose that unique flavor. :)

Thanks Sherry and Cameron! Posting it here gave me the idea for a gifting thread which I just started. I need some fresh ideas from you and everyone else for some Christmas gifts. I am working on some new stuff now.
All of the stuff in the actual garden are plants I already have. I used a lot of small petaled succulents. They are hard to kill and are so cute in a mini garden. I mist them every other day and give them water MAYBE once a month. The little house was just a Dollar Store tree ornament that I embellished. It was a lot of fun to make (and actually quite easy really!) and I was very pleased with how it turned out.

My boyfriend is more than just a friend, but my girlfriend and I's relationship is strictly just platonic. Is it clear now, Slovak boy? ;)
Oh no, my bf wouldn't waste time with silly little pm's Jack...you'd just hear a knock at your
door! http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo1.gif
Then you'd hear the shot!
Honey, this is not America, this is an advanced, millenia old society living on the most (culturally) diverse continent, not some sort of militia based society created from slaves, murderers, religious castaways and optional lumberjacks and minor labor work (that's not what I say, that's actually what they teach kids in Europe ;) )... We don't have, carry or allow weapons, let alone allow some fella from another continent (say yours) carry and get a gun here...
Besides, I think it would be easier to just break up with you, than to travel to Europe only to return... well... that's the best possible case, return... :drum: :ha:

Mr. Daw...
I should have known you would get back with another drawn-out answer, and that you would further grace us with more of your deep thoughts and views...
It was a joke anyway Jack...my bf would never shoot anyone. He'd just do some rearranging of your facial features that might actually be becoming, depending on the angle! :ha: :ha: :ha:
I suppose you're not just a Salsa dancer, but trained in Karate too? http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo1.gif

I make my own beef jerky in my dehydrator and I have to cut the beef really thin before marinating it for 24 hours. I make it with inside round roast...

Nope, it's not supposed to look like anything but a damn good way to prepare inside round roast! :ha:
My moonflowers are dead now Blake but you gave me lots of seeds so it's cool. I didn't let my plant go to seed at all.
I saw your banana pics and commented on some of them in your album but yes those look awesome, Blake. You must be thrilled!!! :goteam:

Cam, thanks for the link. I have a "Sapphire Skies" Yucca Rostrata from Bob and it's in my garden. It survives our cold zone well and is a perennial. Tha red one looks awesome too.

They are not my banana plants, but I took pictures for other to see my trip. :) I was thrilled though to see that someone a couple min away got there bananas to bloom. The blooma were soft to touch, but when you squeez them they are hard, the best thing that I can compare them to is a 5 pound minie football! But it was verry cool to see his bananas, and even better to see blooms... and fruit!! :D

Thanks Sherry. I have read that yucca seeds can be similar to passiflora seeds. I have read one site that stated that they can take a couple weeks to a year to germinate. I hope its just a couple of weeks LOL. I've seen it all over around here and the flower spikes are tall.

The Hollyberry Lady
11-07-2010, 07:06 PM
I don't know much about Bamboo, Cam...but many others in this thread do! Not sure of where to get it but why don't you just try to trade with another gardener?
I hear it can be invasive.
Is this true?
: )
Willow87
11-07-2010, 07:11 PM
Thanks Sherry that's a good idea, but i dont have anything good to trade right now for bamboo. I love the black bamboo and its hardy in my zone. There are non invasive varieties but alot of bamboo is really invasive. I've seen it growing wild around here and there is a whole field of it a few miles away, but I'm afraid i might get arrested trying to collect it LOL
The Hollyberry Lady
11-07-2010, 07:23 PM

It's harder than trigonometry (that might just be because I think trig is easy), but mostly just because we were assigned to use processes we didn't write and I have no idea how they work or what they do. :/

I'm sorry I asked! And I'm seething with jealousy! http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo1.gif
I'm planning on getting the last of my gardening work done this week to prepare everything for winter. Hard to believe another season is over. :(
Hope winter passes fast and I'm out planting in my gardens again soon...

We have decent weather here. Fall is my favorite time of year, I just love it! But our summers are horribly hot. I found a couple of pictures I will post to your winter thread tomorrow (because I have to find them again), but they are from last year and not a very common site around here. ~J

That is very weird, Janan. It still waves for me.
I was beginning to think nobody wanted to chat with me! :(
Wish it didn't get dark so early now...it's depressing and reminds me that winter is coming. And so is snow....ssshhhhhhh
SNOW FTW!!!!!! :D
Just saying, lol! Btw, that's For The World, not the other, double lol!
Strange. The bananas in Janan's posts are waving at me too.
Sherr! :) I always like chatting with u! You can chat with me here, on Yahoo IM, on the school bus, on the deck, well, anywhere you wanna chat!! :D
K. The "beautiful"s are still here, i'm just too lazy to type them.
Well, we had bacon cheeseburgers and homemade curly fries! :D Oh, and pumpkin pie for desert! Couldn't get photos though cause nobody gets in the kitchen while it's cooking and when we get to the table, everybody's ****ing around so no way to take any photos. :(
Oh, weather! :D Brrrrrrrrrrrrr! I want snow i want snow i want snow i want snow... 50's but getting up to 70'sF tomorrow but dropping back to 60's and too cold if we dont get any snow!

You're so lucky to have such nice weather, Janan!
Cool Cory. I like chatting with you too. :D I'll try to take more shots of my dinners, now that I've started that new thread...
Hope you will participate in it too Janan, because it sounds like you eat pretty well also and I'd be nosey to know what you're makin' sometimes. ;)
Cory, your dinner sounds good. I used to love curly fries...with chili and cheese on them. Mmmmmm!
You can have all our snow when it lands. I'd gladly send it your way in one quick hurry if I could. ;)
Janan, looking forward to your shots tomorrow in the winter thread. Just not looking forward to winter. :(
I had my apple, by the way. :D

Eating well! A little TOO well! HA! HA! :ha: I don't usually take pictures of dinner unless it's really pretty or a holiday, but I do love taking pictures! It's a hobby that I really love. Sherry I think you, I, Ante, Mitchel, and Tony, are the picture taken est group! HA! HA! Blake and Cory are slipping in there. We know Bob doesn't take to many! And Howard is playing catch up because he broke his. ~J :woohoonaner:

LoL, Janan!!! That's too funny, the way you described the picture takers. :ha:
I must say I love Ante's shots...and Mitchel's are superb too. I love taking shots as well and want to get a super fancy camera. Might soon...
Yes, pics aren't required in the dinner thread...just if members want to, they can.

Just got a message from my broadband internet provider - they are going to be replacing a router tomorrow saying we will be down for a couple of hours, which probably means a couple of DAYS! I hate it when that happens. Soooo, if you don't hear anything from me for a couple of days you will know why. :(
I love seeing everyones pictures!!!! I love looking as much as I love taking! ~J

That sucks, Janan. Hope it won't be down too long for you.
I feel the same about pictures as you do Janan but wish more people would take them. Wish too, that some members wouldn't hog the picture bar so much, and maybe allow other members who hardly ever post shots, to display their peeks way longer. ;) I always enjoy commenting on the pics and rating them.
Sometimes those can be the best kind, Cam...plants on clearance! I bet you're glad you got it at such a good deal.

Oh, I guess I am a picture bar hogger! Sorry! I try to load them in groups for the thread I want to post them too or I forget. I have a swiss cheese memory sometimes. I have a private picture storage which is where I have my jewelry pictures stored, but I just use it for my sales shots. ~J

It's ok to take the whole bar sometimes and I didn't mean that. Just if you are a very regular picture poster it might be cool to take a day or two off and allow others a chance to display their shots. ;)
You take many days off Janan so you're cool. :)
I look at them all and always notice the best ones. I like that you can comment on the shots too.

Hey Cam! :03:
Very cool about your passiflora seeds popping! :D What'd I tell ya? :) They're not difficult to germinate especially if the seeds are fresh.
The vines too, practically grow themselves...so you have no worries. ;)
I brought my Caerulea passiflora vine indoors now because it's just getting too cold at night for it to survive in a pot much longer. I think I'll put it in the ground next season.
Anyway...just wanted to say "hi" to everyone. Cool shot, Blake! :08: Hope you had fun 'muddin'!!! :ha:
