View Full Version : This seems to be happening to everyone this year... more tales of bad timing!
This seems to be the year for lots of us to get blooms or a flag popping up late so I thought I'd join in...
First my Veinte Cohol threw out this start of a flag earlier in the week:
http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss149/bob_075/DSCN0612.jpg
Yesterday I was working in the new side garden and hadn't been over there in about a week since it had been raining and cool out. Sure enough...... the Velutina ( or is it Dasycrappa now? ).. threw out this bright red start of a flag:
http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss149/bob_075/DSCN0608.jpg
I guess in New Jersey I should just count my blessings and be happy with it but... NO!
I think I can dig and pot the velutina without disturbing the roots and its early enough I can keep it in my front porch that I'm starting to move plants into now...
The Veinte Cohol....
: (
Too big to bring in and ... since it only takes a few months from flowering to mature ripe fruit on this variety I may try to protect it with a plastic cover...I'll let you know
Really not sure whether to smile or pull my hair out over it... may as well enjoy the success however minor I suppose...

Bravo Bob!
BTW how are IC naners doing? Its been some time...
:nanadrink:
The Ice creams are fattening up but not getting much longer. I'll post a pic of them soon so you can see before I build the plastic tent over them to get an extra few weeks of warmth... I may have a few otherlow tech season extension tricks I'm going to try as well.

Always bragging about your bananas, eh Bob? I should have known you'd have more flags before the end of the season.
Why you! http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo2.gif

bob i dont know how you did it but you managed to still tie with me for the number of banana plants that you had bloom this year.:bananas_b
Angelstar.... yeah I have garden fleece( we call it remay here... or at least I did for the past 20 years!)and I know a lot of tricks to overwinter or extend the season for other things but the bananas are so big that its tough and it gets very cold here... we'll see. Tah.
Thanks HBL... why are you being nice to me? .... "Depends" on your mood I guess ? :ha:...oh I know..... not to worry your plants have been packed and will shortly be on the way:ha:
Patty... you're the banana queen and you stunk first but.... thanks:08:
Ron,.... luck of the draw man... these plants were over a year old and .... just got lucky I guess.

That's great news, Bob. You certainly have the magic thumb!
And 'dasycrappa....I love it!!!
Not giving up!!!!
I decided to carefully dig up the M.Dasycarpa( Velutina) really carefully and was sure I wouldnt do any damage to the roots and think I may have pulled it off.... here it is in it's 12 gallon pot right after digging... It's in my front porch for the winter now and looking like there's been no transplant shock at all... I'll post either way if it does well or not.

I'm thinking now that I may be able to do something similar with the Veinte Cohol. Something Jon ( Pitangadiego) told me and stuck with me was that even if a banana fell over while fruiting to just leave it and the bunch would likely continue to mature and ripen. It's too tall for my front porch and too late in the season to leave out but ..... if I carefully dig that up and left it at an angle so it would fit indoors.......hmmmmm?
I'll keep you posted one way or the other.. never hurts to try right?

Looking forward to see it's progress!
Regarding the Veinte Cohol,I would say that you shouldn't have any special problems planting a too tall banana at an angle save for instability which can be solved with a few well placed supports so as not to create a stress point on the pseudostem.

Good idea to just 'lean' it somewhere! You sure didn't have much notice for that flower bud...no smaller size leaves - like, flag of a flag of the flag LOL. Can't wait to see how many fingers.

Cool, Bob! You've had a lot of success up there this year. I think your velutina will be just fine. Good luck with the VC.
I just returned to Aruba and my IC put out a ton of fruit while I was gone! I'll try to post some pics in my "Oh sure! Now it decideds to bloom" thread later on.
I can't stand to give up.... the velutina is in my front porch and showing no signs of transplant shock and the bud is showing some signs of growth.
The Veinte Cohol was way to big to even lay half way down in the porch with the other plants and I was sure it was doomed ........ till I remembered a friend of mine( who I gave some pups to last month) had about a 12 ft tall sunroom.......hmmmmm? A sip of the Scotish nerve tonic for inner strength and a quick phone call and the Veinte Cohol was on its way.... even with a 6 or so ft p-stem once it was potted it barely fit but.... sometimes you try to make things work:
http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss149/bob_075/DSCN0643.jpg
It almost hit the glass ceiling but... it made it.
http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss149/bob_075/DSCN0644.jpg
Sure maybe it wont make it being transplanted in flower like many have suggested but... not for lack of trying. I'll post updates no matter what.

Nothing wrong with trying. I'd try to keep it on the dry side to keep it from growing too much over the winter. If you're lucky, you can put it back out in the spring and it'll pick up where it left off this year. It's tough to keep them inside and in a dormant state. The warmth seems to make them want to grow even if kept dry.

Bohow tall is your bananas. i seen the weather for this winter they say its going to be above average.
The Dasycarpa has been in the house for a week now and the flower has grown and is opening!:woohoonaner: Sure the best I can hope for is a stunted flower and bunch but it's still exciting for New Jersey so I'll keep posting some pics till the bitter end. Here's todays shots... the bud starts to open:

and sure enough is revealing some tiny flowers underneath !!!! :woohoonaner:

It'll be fun looking at this grow when there's snow on the ground in a few months. I have read that moving a flowering plant indoors or to a pot from the ground is useless but in this case it seems to be working and in my climate about all you can hope to do.... you never know unless you try.

Hey Hammer
Most everything I have is pretty tall, I have a couple of goldfingers that are slightly smaller than the one that flagged, maybe 12 ft. or so. My raja puri is about 5 ft. tall.
If we have a mild winter, I should have some fruit next year.

Beautiful color Bob, just planted some seeds hope they turn out to look like this next year .
I was worried that bringing a plant dug from the ground at flowering would shock it too much but it seems to be working, here's shots from the last few days as new petals opened to reveal little pink edged whitish bananas which soon turn pink. I'm sure this one's going to make it now and hope it will inspire others in climates where bananas wouldn't survive to at least try for some extra success.

A few days later ( today):
http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss149/bob_075/DSCN0655.jpg
I'm thinking that the M. dasycarpa(Velutina) is the perfect plant to grow in a pot or indoors for those climate challenged gardeners who lack the space indoors for a larger plant. This one even in a large , tallish pot would fit in even a small crowded room so literally anyone could successfully grow this one.

Great news Bob, I love that you have been able to transplant the Velutina indoors after being in the ground. That's definately on next years list. Well good luck on the VC. I guess mine is going to wait until spring if I can overwinter it in the garage ok. I hope the only flags you've seen have been Naners and not out in the woods (if you know what I mean, not to offend anyone). Once again good job.

congrats looks like it's doing great inside. How long did it take to flower? I have some seedlings and can't wait till they bloom.
The really cool thing is that this is just a first year plant.... technichally anyway. I first got it last year and when the mother plant was a little taller than the first one flowering now I accidently broke it in half walking by it in the crowded garden. The mother plant died in it's pot over the winter and this Velutina flower is on a first year pup but , with a 2 year old corm. Still it seems this is just a great variety to have for those of us in the north with limited space ...and impatient waiting for a bloom.

Looking good Bob!!! :woohoonaner:
Welll I hadn't heard from my friend with the Veinte Cohol I had dug from the garden and couldn't find room for here. She had been away for a week and when she got back exitedly calling me asking what was going on and there was a "Red thing " sticking out with what looked like bananas on it?
Needless to say I paid a visit.........
It not only lived but had been producing bananas the whole time she was away and when I got there I was about in shock!!!! I cut a leaf and some of the petals away for these photos:
http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss149/bob_075/DSCN0710.jpg
Not only was it still growing but, it had put out a bud.... with about 80 to 100 bananas on it.
http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss149/bob_075/DSCN0709.jpg
not only that but, instead of the stunted bunch I had barely hope would emerge it was producing double layered hands containing 20 or so little bananas on each of them and just thriving!
http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss149/bob_075/DSCN0708.jpg
Experts have said that this would be too much stress for the plant and couldn't be done. The fact is , is that most of those in the scientific community are rightly only concerned with commercial production and would have no reason to experiment like those of us in colder climates so... never let anyone tell you what you can't do until you've tried it and failed on your own..... at least when it comes to growing bananas out of zone:ha:

I have a Fatsia Japonica over 5 foot tall in my back yard that has been there for 3 years now. I don't feed it or give it any special treatment yet it has survived 3 winters outside now with no special protection, including last winter which was the coldest and longest winter in the UK for at least a decade...It has suddenly decided to flower, I will try and get a photo of it tomorrow and post it. It has never flowered this late and certainly not usually after it has started to get really cold and we have had at least 3 hard frosts to date this month

Thanks for the compliments NFB. Here in New Jersey we generally get down close to zeroF for a few days> Last year it "only" got down to 4F and the year before -4F some years a little colder or warmer... you never know.
Just visited my veinte cohol and now we're planning a banana party for when they ripen. I cant believe this plant is doing so well. It was dug up when the first sign of a flag showed and left on my porch for two days before I got the idea to move it to a friends house and pot it up. Supposedly this was impossible but ... you can see that it's not. I hope more people in northern climates will be inspired to go the extra mile. The worst that can happen is failure..... the best:

Thanks Annie... you're the exact gardener I'd hope to inspire showing these pics and made the thread worthwhile. Just keep trying and take the best care of your plants you can and that the climate allows and you're sure to have success!
............ and even if the bananas are a bit stunted and not what they would be grown in the tropics..... you gotta love an excuse for a mid winter party!:ha:... What better than home grown bananas?:woohoonaner:

12-04-2010, 09:48 AM
So those will ripen in mid-winter, Bob?
How much bigger will they get?
: )
They're a short cycle variety and supposedly ripen in about 2 months from fruit set so I'm figuring mid January. Not sure if they'll be somewhat stunted from transplant shock either but that wouldn't be .... a shock ...either:ha:
Since they're growing so well I'm hoping for the best and that they'll be about 4" long or so and fairly plump at maturity. Will definitly post at harvest.
