Has it been determined yet how hardy this one is? I have heard through zone 6, but I was curious if anyone has overwintered it outside yet in zone 6-or even lower. I read through some of the older posts but didn't see too much about this. I have one about 3 feet tall I just brought in and was thinking about trying to overwinter it outside next winter with protection similar to basjoo. But who knows, I still have to get through this winter! :coldbanana:

Ive heard that it is hardy to a zone 7, but I think its probably more like a zone 8. I have one thats about 5 feet tall, but Im not risking it in the ground yet. When it pups, Ill probably leave a pup or 2 in the ground and see how it does. Im surprised that no one has experimented with it yet since it is a beautiful banana!

A week of low 20's killed my mama plant to the ground last winter. Late last summer it put up 2 pups that got about 3 ft tall. The 2 pups came back in the spring and are now HUGE, and I have 2 more pups. This one really is slow to multiply, but it sure is beautiful!

It sure is! Does it hold the black through most of the stem when it gets really tall or does it tend to only be closer to the leaf axis? Also when your mother plant died and the pups that came back-were they covered at all during the winter? Thanks!

The leaf petioles and midribs are really black and so is that portion of the pstem. But the dark color does run down most of the trunk. I have no idea about the history of this banana so it would be interesting to know if all of the clones/selections are the same or if there are variations of color.

Pups had no protection and froze to the ground too. I don't know why the mother plant didn't come back unless there was maybe a flower on it's way.
