Here's an update on some of the plants. I didnt show all the plants, but I tried to take pics of the majority of them.

This was my bougainvillea a month ago. I used this pic because it hasnt changed too much other than having a few more blooms.
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1845.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1845.jpg" border="0" alt="Bougainvillea finally flowering!"></a>

Oleander also a pic taken about a month ago. Its in the ground for the first time ever and will definitely receive protection!
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1862.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1862.jpg" border="0" alt="Oleander"></a>

All the other pics are as of today....

Elephant ears blooming like crazy!
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1944.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1944.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Plumeria pretty princess is going to be blooming in just a few weeks!
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1945.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1945.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

This is my largest plumeria. I hope to get it to bloom indoors but we shall see. Heres a pic of an inflo. forming on it.
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1946.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1946.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1971.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1971.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

There are 3 parlor palms in this pot and one of the 3 was eaten by an animal. It ate the entire growing point would have probably eaten all 3 plants if it wasnt for a nice clump of cacti right below it! Its a little hard to see the new growth it has in this picture so I made a circle to make it a little easier
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1947.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1947.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1949.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1949.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

My plumeria "Divine" continues to make blooms. I will probably be getting flowers from it for at least another month!!
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1950.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1950.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

My newest plumeria flower just opened today. It made a pretty huge flower!!! The only thing I didnt like about it was the lack of fragrance and color, but its still a really beautiful plumeria with more pointed petals than my other plumerias.
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1951.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1951.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
I used tape as a scale to give you an idea of the size of the flower.
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1952.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1952.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1953.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1953.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I thought that my Alocasia lauterbachiana died this spring after it withered to the ground and the bulb was all mushy, but it managed to make new plants and is recovering really well. It might get to a noticeable size by this time next year!
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1954.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1954.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1955.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1955.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1956.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1956.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

My pindo palm is pushing another frond up making it 2 or 3 for the year. It hasnt gained much height though and looks pretty much the same as it did in the spring.
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1957.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1957.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

My coconut palm is in a sunnier spot now so it can soak up all the warmth it can get. Its quickly pushing a new frond off even after an animal ripped off the lower 2 fronds!!! Im also noticing that the coconut that its growing out of is starting to break a little which means that maybe by this time next year it wont even be growing out of a coconut anymore!
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1958.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1958.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The coconut palm I bought from Hawaii is making its 1st leaf since I bought it and its 3rd leaf total. It didnt have any roots when I got it, but I think its starting to form some now. Im going to have to keep the pot warm during the winter indoors to keep it happy!
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1959.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1959.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Emerging leaf on my largest coconut palm
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1960.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1960.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Double peach hibiscus bloom
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1962.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1962.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I got a little bit of the pygmy palm trunk in this pic of the hibiscus. Today the hibiscus had about 5 or 6 flowers on it, so its blooming almost as well as it has all summer.
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1963.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1963.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Under the tree. One shrub was replaced after the shrub was damaged by an animal, so now cannas are there!
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1964.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1964.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1966.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1966.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The pot with the queen palm in it used to have plants before an animal ate them all, and the majesty palm used to have fronds before it was also eaten (sad)
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1967.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1967.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

My new fig is almost as tall as my cannas. The fig will be in a different spot next year and overwintered in my garage since its a little late to plant it in the ground.
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1976.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1976.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

My Musa Velutina has put made 2 leaves for the month I have had it. I hope that it stays healthy throughout the winter inside and does well when its planted in the ground this coming spring!
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/?action=view&current=DSCN1979.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/DSCN1979.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Hibsicus and oleander still blooming well.

The ginger are growing pretty fast

My sabal minor has replaced most of its fronds from last winter. You cant really tell from this pic, but the fronds are starting to get pretty wide and big now! Im hoping for some blooms from it next spring.

Thanks! The coconut palm is probably my fastest growing palm. Its going to be 2 years old (its been through 2 summers). I cant wait until it starts growing really mature fronds. They are without a doubt my favorite palms!

Your definitely right. I need some loquats! They are on my list for next year. I love the leaves on them and the fact that they stay green all year and survive the winter! I dont even care if I never see a single fruit or flower!

ShearMe

There's nothing special about the flowers, but if you ever taste a loquat fruit (or even some jelly), you will begin to care about both!

I must admit Ive never had a loquat, but they look like they taste really good!!! I would be really happy if it did manage to fruit here, but I hear that they usually dont in a zone 7. Maybe with some protection it will fruit for me! How do they do in your zone 8?

They're great here, and I've heard of some fruiting in zone 7. What major city do you live closest to?

OK, now I dont have any other choice but to get one ;)!
Any tips for overwintering?

Zac, I live right by New York City. Many times the winters here dont get below 5F and sometimes we dont go below 10F or even 15F on really mild winters, but cold winters can take us down to the lower single digits. Subzero temperatures havent been recorded in over 10 years at least (I think more like 15 years or maybe 20).
Ante, I kept my coconut palm in a very bright warm room, but it was also dry in that roo which the coconut palm hated. It was in poor condition in the spring, but we had so much heat this spring and summer (and humidity to match), that the coconut palm recovered fine. This winter Im putting it by a sunny south facing window and making sure to keep it pretty dry (Ill probably soak it once every 1 weeks). Some people say that they are really difficult to keep indoors, but your winters are probably a little shorter than mine so they should do even better since the less time they spend indoors, the better!

Well, you could always prune 'em small and bring them inside over winter. You might have to pollinate the flowers yourself with this method, but it'd be worth it.

Thanks! I think Im going to risk them in the ground and see how they do. One of my windmill palms had no damage after last winter with no protection, and a common camellia has survived with no protection for almost 15 years now, so I guess its worth a try to grow some loquats. I will probably give it the same protection as my pindo palm even though Loquats are definitely a little more cold tolerant than pindo palms. Maybe Ill buy 2 and keep one in the ground and another in a pot in the ground to go in the garage during the winter. Im really looking forward to spring so I can grow them, and lots of other new plants!!!

Very nice! I was tempted to buy a coconut, but I don't know what I would do with it for the winter. How do you overwinter yours? Does it need high light and high temps year-round?

Thanks kevin!
I overwinter my coconut palm indoors by a bright south facing window and reduce watering. I also watch out for pests since that can be a problem from time to time. Mine goes in in Late october and back out in Mid April. They dont like anything lower than 40F, and they LOVE the heat and humidity. They are very tropical palms but seem to at least hang on during the winter months indoors. If you get too cold for a coconut palm, a majesty palm might give you a similar effect, but those are nothing like a coconut palm! Cocos are my favorite palms!

Very impressive Alex!!! I will have to post pics of my palms someday. I have a 7-8ft (from soil) Canary Island date palm, a large fan palm & some small -pygmy date, cabbage (or sable), & a small sago....all in pots.
I also hve a loquat tree in a pot. I grew it from seed in 06 & it is now about 7 -8 ft. I grafted Big Jim variety on it 1 1/2 yrs ago & it is starting to flower... at least, it has a clump of small furry balls that Iassume will be blossoms, so I'm very excited. I keep them all in pots & they come in my sunroom for winter. They go semi dormant & don't need xtra lighting.

Thanks! What temps and humidity do you have in your house? It sounds like you don't have it in a grow room. If 40F (4C) is the minimum, I should be fine. Maybe I'll give one a try.

Patty, Any tropical themed yard outside of the tropics/subtropics, is pretty nice to me! Im sure you have some beautiful plants since the pics I see of your plants are always nice!!
Zac, I do have a dog, but she wouldn't harm anyone! There arent really too many animal problems here so hopefully they wont be back!
Kevin, I live in New York City. I dont have a grow room for any of my plants yet, but Im working on it! The summers here are warm and humid for long periods of time and the coconut palm loves it, but the winters are far from a coconut palms comfort zone! They dont seem to give too many problems for me indoors. How are your summers??

Kevin
09-29-2010, 09:53 PM
Our summers are hot and humid (usually), but not as bad as out east (like you). I'm not really concerned about it outside, it's just inside for the winter. I didn't think they could handle cold, but maybe now I will give it a try. My low temps in my grow room get down to 10C (50F), and I thought that might be too cold for it. I also need to find a place to put it!

I think you should wait until early June to buy it because then you can take it outside in a full sun spot and not worry about all the problems it can get indoors. I got mine of ebay from a seller in Miami Beach, Florida, but Im not sure if they sell to canada. Where ever you buy it, try to get one that is already rooted because it usually takes about 2 months of 80s for roots to get strong. I think it should do okay in your summers and as long as you keep it warm during the winter, it should be really happy. Give it as much light as you can though! They are slow growers during cooler weather, but are fast when temps are about 80F. They are just really cool palms to try, especially out of the tropics!
Good luck!
