View Full Version : Basjoos look ratty

What is the deal with them when the temp turns "cooler". I've dropped to 48F so far with many nights in the 50s and now the basjoos are looking really tough. Lots of yellow/lime green... the leaves don't have that "tropical" look anymore.
I'm really thinking about dumping them for something else. Probably something that has the potential to fruit and stays smaller. My SDC's look fine, so i may hold onto those.
Also going to test what a basjoo corm can handle... No digging this year folks! If they make it, it was meant to be, if not...oh well :)

Mine are doing the same thing. Although the lowest temp weve gotten so far is 56F. The pups look the opposite, they are a nice healthy green color.

Im getting that problem a bit on my thai black but I think its a nitrogen deficency so maybe your basjoo has the same problem. 48F is certainly cold enough to slow growth down, but the color should stay a nice green until frost!

Mine just do that this time of year. I think they're going dormant. I have one in the ground, and one in a pot and they always begin their decline about the third week in August. I assume it has more to do with day length than temperature....which might help explain how hardy it is. I live near the foothills outside Denver, and have a basjoo that has made it in the ground for three winters now....

Hort-
After thinking about it i think your exactly right. Day length would make a lot of sense. My soil temps right by the basjoos as i type are 72.8F... That should be plenty warm for them. The SDCs naturally have a much deeper green leaf color. I did notice that some of the inner plants (i have a huge mat) look better...so who knows.
Its this zone denial! I need a heated greenhouse 85F/75F every day...maybe some overhead metal halides for winter :)

There's my Basjoo at the end of the garden, as of less than a week ago...

I know it's a far away shot, but it's my most recent. ;)
It's always been kind of...weathered looking, being on the end of the post and getting whipped around a lot by wind. I have noticed it's become a bit paler with the cool weather, too. I thought it just needed more fertilizer, so I gave it more this morning!
We'll see how it does next season as I'm establishing it as a perennial...

My theory is even though basjoo will survive cool and cold temps... They still don't LIKE them! I suppose I'd be looking pretty ratty myself if I was outside all the time right now without a coat. Oh wait, I am looking pretty ratty even with one...lol...
