View Full Version : My wrapped bananas got soaked!

We had a storm here the other night. As I left for work in the morning, I noticed the plastic I used to wrap the bananas in hay had blown to kingdom come, leaving the hay exposed. Simply drenched in rain.

Will this cause the bananas to rot? How far in would the frost penetrate? We rarely get below -6 degrees C here. I don't suppose this would dry up?

How the weather right now, Erlend? If above freezing for a day or two, and dry, maybe just let the area dry out some and cover again. I'm pretty sure the frost wouldn't even penetrate to ground level, with all the hay you have for protection. Don't sweat it though, man. I'm going to bet that your plants will make it through just fine!

Thanks Bigdog. I'll drop the plan of standing outside with a hair-dryer! :07:

How the weather right now, Erlend?

It's above freezing, maybe dropping to 30-32 degrees F in the early morning. Days are not so bad, 40-50 degrees F. Not too much rain now, but windy.
But unbelievably dark this time of year. Depressing!
I am hoping to take a trip to Thailand or the Canaries in January or February.

I spent six months in Sweden from January to June. The first few weeks I didn't even see the sun. That was really hard for me to take.

Thanks Kylie;

As far as I know, everything is fine. It's raining, but we have still had just one minor freeze of -1 degrees C.
Someone at the UK-oasis told me they never cover their naners in other stuff than hay, so I am taking my chances, and will not redo the whole thing. :2729:

Started the nagensiums (maybe nagensiumX, probably a hybrid) in the same way as I start all my musas, on a heat-pad set on for 10 hrs and off 14 hrs. They are extremely fast growing and looking very healthy under the growlight! I planted about 200 seeds, and so far I have about 100 seedlings. Most are inside under growlights, and some are in a cool frostfree greenhouse. I am worried, cause they grow a little too well. In under 2 months they are getting adult traits, and soon they will be too big for the room they are in. I can get them outside earliest in May, so it will be a long winter!
My seed grown musa-basjoo var "formasana" grows nothing like nagensium, and are easier to contain. Musa sikkimensis is fast, along with musa balbisiana. Musa velutina is kind of slow for me.

Yunnan has never sprouted for me, probably bad seed. Lasiocarpa I've never tried.

My plan is to contain the ones I have in very small pots for the winter.

:gif_rojo: Mrbungalow, if you go to thailand you may be ableto bring back one of those red thai bananas! Of course, I don't know what your country's import law is.

Nucci, I'd sure want one, but I wouldn't know where to look...

When I went there last year, I saw many zebrina-looking bananas in the wild. Generally, I saw alot of bananas. Don't remember seeing any all red ones.

Maybe you need to go to a garden-centre or similar... Didn't see to many of them either in Thailand..
