My Moonflower plants arnt like many other people's, for one they are in bush form, not vine. The actual flowers themselvs are a little over 4 in wide and about 6in long. The flowers are verry sweet smelling (I wish they had perfume/clone that smells like it) The big white flowers open as soon as it starts to get dark and stays open until morning (If you have a cloudy morning they will stay open til' about mid day). The moonflower will stay blooming every night until about the first frost. After the flower is gone, cool looking spikey balls appear, this is where the seeds hide. When the seeds are ready to come out the spikey ball bursts, the seeds inside look like a damp brane. When the seeds dry they fall out. When wintertime comes they die down to their roots and then when spring comes they pop right back up (like bulbs or courms). Also in the spring you will get moonflower seedlings poping up all around the plant, so if you had a really bad winter you will still alwayse have the seedlings pop up and grow into a big bush. If you ever dig up a moonflower plant their rootsystem looks like a big carrot.

Ok now onto some pictures and videos...

They come in other colors too, Triple yellow, double purple, triple white, and then the single white like you have. I sell all of them in the spring.

Unlike what most people think of as Moonflower (the vine) this is a Datura. Those varieties (as stated above) can be white, or shades or yellow or shades of pinkish are Brugmansia, not Datura but are closely related. Brugmansia forms have large flowers that hang down and in the tropics can form 30 foot tall trees. Here in zone 7 they die to the ground but usually come back every year (this year only a few of mine came back). The purple variety I believe is a Datura and is more upright. The form you have I've seen more out west. I think it is native out there. The native form out here is more upright to about 4 feet with fewer flowers. They are poisonous but some folks tempt fate and use the seeds to make a tea that makes them hallucinate (and occasionally die). They are called Jimsonweed out here. They have seeds that can remain dormant for an extremely long time. Our neighbor had a very old barn on their property and when they tore the barn down Jimsonweed sprouted up. The seeds may have been there from before the barn was built.

Thanks RobG7 I didn't know some of that info, like mine maby coming from out west. All of my flowers are white, thats just me using different lights.

Thats one thing that I frogot to say was that they are poisonous and they are a type of Datura.

Oh and another note, I soon will be posting on the classifieds for Moonflower seeds. I wanted to make this thread for a reference of pictures/videos and info on the plant & comments make it even better, like RobG7 for example. :)

After a little looking on the internet it looks like you could have either Datura wrightii, metel, or inoxia. The ones that grow wild out here are D. stramonium. They apparently have been spread around the world for so long that their native ranges are a bit confused. The purple form you sometimes see is a form of D. metel. You can do a google images search and get an idea of what the different species look like. As a side note I've found very many posts on the internet on how about 95% of the time that people try to get high of this plant the end result is very, very bad. By that I mean people rolling in their own excrement for 11 days totally out of their minds...so...not recommended.

wow, I didn't know that!

Is it possible that mine could be a hybred of Datura inoxia and Datura wrightii? These things have ben in my family 30+ years.

To me it looks a little more like the inoxia than the wrightii.

It looks like D. metel to me (I've also seen it listed as meteloides). I grow this one as well and it is very pretty. I've grown the double purple one as well. The vine Moonflower is an Ipomaea species. We used to have the wild form of Datura (Jimsonweed as Rob mentioned) growing in our hog fields back in KY and they wouldn't touch the stuff!

They are absolutely stunning, Blake! :goteam:

I sure appreciate you sharing the seeds with me and love the plant so much. Here's a bloom that opened for me earlier this morning...

There's some that bloomed before dark too! What an incredible plant.

Here's what I want to know...

When I deadhead the spent blooms, do I remove the green pod the flower grew out of, or just the flower? Will another flower grow out of the pod, or do seeds begin to form within the pod?

Your shots and videos are gorgeous, Blake. Thanks for sharing.

Seeds will form inside the pod. If you don't want seeds, remove the pod as well.

I let the moonflower blooms drop out, it takes a day. but then after the bloom the seedpod will appear... and then when the seed pod opens, you get the seeds, and be sure to dry them... Its that easy. :)

Yeah, definitely doesn't look like the seeds/leaves of the moonflower I have grown. They are very beautiful, nonetheless, though! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the information about the seed pods. I kinda figured as much but wanted to be sure.

Is it true that this plant can be invasive? Someone warned me of it spreading it's seeds everywhere and taking over my garden! Is this true?

I have seeds for the double purple variety also.
