View Full Version : Separating pups earlier than I probably should

Since I transplanted a couple of my basjoos, I saw that there were already multiple pups on both of them so I took 2 of them off my larger one with a clean knife cut off the corm and these guys didn't even have their own roots yet having like 1 leaf each and at 6 inches tall.
I used juicy roots rooting gel as well as other liquid based root stimulators in a very loose home-made potting mix which seems to make everything grow well for me and I also put them in filtered sun with bamboos on the side blocking some of the sun on the hottest hours. Has anyone ever had success with this experiment?
Here's how they look now.

I just seperated one of my basjoo pups, mine are the same size and It had 1 root so I dipped the pup in water then I put the courm and one root in root-tone ( powered rooting forumlia)
So I guess that we will find out what will happen. :)
A few weeks ago I cut an Ice Cream pup with no roots. I put it in a pot with compost and put the pot in a clear plastic bag and set it in the shade. Did the same with a pup I got from Abshrek and it is already growing new leaves.

They both ended up rotting which is not really a big deal since the mother plant is doing great and has more pups which will emerge eventually since it is planted 1ft deeper than ground level.

For future reference, I would wait till pups are MUCH larger than that to separate. This ensures transplant success rates will be higher. There's no harm in leaving them on anyway....they don't slow the growth of the main plant.

i second Raver on letting the get bigger before dividing. Also, one of the best ways to divide is by comepletly removing the entire plant from the ground and washing soil off to find best point of division, seeing your in Upstate NY, best be done in late may, probably better in early june every year. But it was a basjoo so live and let learn.

If they're real small like that, pot them into a real porous mix like promix hp with biofungicide. Water them in when you plant them, then don't water them again until the top surface is dry. Put them in bright light but no direct sunlight. keep them around 80 degrees in day, minimum 60 at night. They should take off in about 2 weeks.
