After 4 weeks, mine is still a brilliant lime green, with no trace of red at all. It does, however, have 2 pups.

Mine is doing well but the nights are still a bit cool for it to really take off.
I'm going to post the last set of pics over at UKOasis as the guys will be interested , I'll link the thread to. Hope that's ok.
Great to have the chance to grow this wonderful plant.

Just curious.
I have had my plant since the first batch was sent out. It is growing great, probably has put out over 6 leaves and doubled in height.
I live in S FL and for the past 2 weeks it has been in the full sun.
My question is that it is still totally lime green without a trace of red?????
Anyone else have one that hasn't gotten any red? I figured after a week in the sun, it should show some red.
Thanks - Terry

Here is a pic I just took. This is how much sun it gets each day from about 10:30 on.

If it does, you should see the green leaves turn red. Let's see what happens... maybe you got a dud. Word is that it's a finicky tissue culture.

It grows great, NOT like the damn Dwarf Nam Wa Pearl we all tried and lost.
I wrote because I wondered if it was a T/C like an Ae-Ae and that the color wasn't true in all plantlets.
BRIAN - you got any feedback on this being an issue?

Mine is growing slowly - its only put out one leaf since I got it. It seems to colour better in the sun. The new leaf spear, for instance, only turned reddish on the side that was facing the sun, so the new leaf only has faint red on one half of the underside. It is in full sun whenever possible, but has to spend nights and some days indoors due to temperature and rain.
It seems to be just hanging in there, so hopefully when it fully establishes itself and starts growing at a normal speed it will deepen in colour.
I noticed in Brian's pics that the leaves which were green when he got his plant rapidly turned to a deep red after exposure to the sun. Does this normally happen? I was expecting new leaves to emerge with red, but for already green leaves to stay green.
Brian, are you fertilizing yet? If so with what, and what is your soil setup?
Its kind of like the opposite of Zebrina which emerges with brilliant colour and markings, which fade over time.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
~Joe

Looks like it maybe a green one :o
here is mine , I cut the old leaves as they were damaged and finished. Two leaves at the moment plus a roller coming fast. Now the Temps here in Bethesda are starting to go up Siam Red is growing much faster.

Sorry to be so slow on replys its that time of the year here.
I have seen some green sports out ot TC and I will replace any of them with red forms. The one you have pictured above does look to be a green one. It seems to happen out of a few in each tray. I am not yet sure on the numbers of it happening.
I have not really fertilized the smaller plants once they grow out a bit I am putting time release fertilizer on them. All are potted up in pro mix. I have had some really nice leaves sense they have been in the sun it is not a super fast banana but it does move much like zebrina.
If you have any problems like a green form let me know. I will do my best to fix the problem. THANKS

Here's the latest pictures, at 5 1/2 wks. I decided to use this thread to document the color change, mostly because the plant arrived totally green and after seeing pictures of more mature plants, I knew it would be exciting to watch the progression. But I was surprised to see it change so rapidly! I potted it up in 1/2 potting soil, 1/2 compost, with added perlite. It has been in direct sun since day one, and for the first 3 wks. or so I gave it additional light,(compact fluorescent full spectrum), for a total of 16 hrs. day. If you look back in the thread, it was getting color in the 1st. wk.
Terry, if it was going to produce some color, I think it would have by now! I know Brian already replied so that point is moot. Good luck to all who are growing this plant, and Please... post more pictures!

Mine stayed bright lime green in the greenhouse, so I brought it home and exposed it to part sun. It has been outside for a couple of weeks now, and the new leaves are still a bright lime green like Terry's. The older leaves started looking like they were changing color...but upon closer inspection, it looks like a bit of a sunburn. The color has been a bit off on my camera on some pics recently. Something about the white balance I think. Check it out:

I will check out the photos and see if a replacement is in order. I see two or so that looks to what I feared more green than expected. I have noticed a few and have pulled them out to watch.
I usually require the plants sent back for replacements. But for a few I dont think it will be required. THANKS

Just going on my experience , full sun on little ones is too much here in Maryland. Lost a few leaves , they had that little bit red sunburn look . Now all is fine , I guess Siam Red gets Sun from noon on here at the moment. I'd wait a couple of weeks more to say plants are green for sure . The Florida ones are coming on very well and showing lovely colour , I hope mine goes the same way .Temps here have been up and down , seems stable now in the high 70's moving to 80's by the weekend , some nights are high 40's but most are high 50's to low 60's . The Siam Red has been out in the weather for three weeks I guess and seems a tough little fella, it's taken Sun ,Storms and cold and refused to give up.

Mine looks about like Gabes with only the top 3 leaves. It's only been moved to full sun for a few days so it's too early to tell if it's gonna stay green. I kind of doubt it. It seems like there is a little variation in the green on the leaves. So far no sun damage to it in sunny skies and near 90 temps.
Gabe, is yours in full sun now?

The new leaves on mine are emerging red on the bottom of the leaf , the top of the leaf does not go red until it gets some Sun. I'm thankfull I have a red one , I just feel for Brian with all his good work to get us these rare Musa and then there is a bunch of problems with them , I guess in the long run he will have a stock of interesting forms to sell and recoup the money and time he has layed out. Best of Luck to all with Siam Red.
Just a side note , the small pup of my Siam Red is green so far , it's about 2 inches tall. I guess the next step is to see if they pup true to colour.

Temperatures in NJ are finally becoming summerlike. And my Siam Ruby is starting to turn red quite quickly now, even though it is still growing slowly. The newest leaf which I mentioned before came out mostly green has now turned about 50% red and is still going, after just about 2 days in 90 degrees.
It was getting full sun for weeks before without much change, it seems to me to be due to the heat, not the light.

As you all can see, I have one of the limited edition "greenies" Ruby Reds. I got this in the week of April 15 in Seattle, WA, and hand carried it to Walnut Creek, CA on the 19th. It has been set outside on a south facing balcony since the first week of May. The first 2 weeks in CA, I had to bring it in at night because the temps got to the high 40's. Now the temps here during the day are in the high 70's to low 80's and in the 50's at night.

By my (given, it's limited) observations w/my Siam, it 'appears' to like/need heat at the root/corm to help coloring up to red.
I'm basing this strictly by mine, btw. It was developing color, albeit very slowly. When noting the large amounts of sun that the Florida people were giving theirs (& getting red WAY faster) ... I started 'chasing the sun'.
Now don't laugh - bear w/me for a minute here!
No one part of my smallish garden gets the duration that those w/big spreads would get, so I started moving the Siam pot w/the sun. It would start in the AM in one part, move to another, on to the top of the washer & later, on the gas BBQ side tray. I was kinda antsy @ setting it on metal, thinking it might overheat the pot/roots/corm. So even though it was speeding up the color change, I started putting it on top of a plastic compost bin. It still was coloring up, but the red stopped deepening.
A few days ago, I 'clicked' on this & went back to placing it on metal/heat retaining materials. And it has went back (almost immediately) to the intenser(?) deepening change.
I finally have started seeing the 'cherry red' bits that the Florida people are showing in their pixs. Mixed in w/the deeper purpley/red that it started with, granted, but definitely spreading. The bright clear cherry red is what grabbed me when I first saw this plant!
I may be all wet, but maybe it's not just sun - baby needs to be a little warmer at the roots?

Just moved mine into a 15gal pot that has been staying between 78* and 85* and gets about 8hrs of direct sun. Lets see what happens now. Still all green but maybe there's something to the light/temps idea.
Even if some of these stay green, you have to admit this has been a lot of fun and we can always send them back. I've been checking several times a day for that first sign of red as the theme song from Jeopardy plays in my head.

I think we're onto something! Tomorrow I'm gonna try to find a metal tray or something to boost the heat around the pot. I may even water it with warm water, although I'm not sure if thats a good idea.

If it's a help - the black metal BBQ seemed to work better than the white washer. It gets warmed up pretty good from that, & seems to appreciate a regular drink from the hose (the soil WILL dry out more quickly - stay on that hose!). I think it might be prudent to hold off on the warm water till you try the metal surface, maybe?
And if that don't work ... threaten it w/a reaallly big stick!
(not sarcasm ... just having a really fine day & wanna play!)
If this turns out to be a heat-seeker, this winter is gonna be rough w/out greenhouses all around.

Does anyone else have one that has a yellow striping in the leaves (like the first pic)? Every leaf I get seems to have this. Could this be something I am doing?

Does that stripe go away? Is it on old leaves too?
I'm thinking it could do with the unraveling and maybe go away with time.
But maybe you have some sport that has some different genetic code.

BGreen, your looks just like mine, yellow striping included. In fact, mine is reluctant to unravel its leaves all the way now.
I don't think heat has a thing to do with whether or not mine (or yours) will change color or not. Mine has been out in the Tennessee heat and sun for several weeks now with no change at all. Mine is striped too. Still green, but in many shades of it. A new leaf is about to open so we'll see if it stripes too.
A couple of nights ago I looked at it just before sundown. About two hours later I looked at it under the full moon and saw dark green splotches. I got a flashlight, and sure enough, in two hours it developed dark green patches. The next morning they were gone. This happens every night. Two hours after sundown it shows dark green splotches and patches running through it. I've never seen this with any other bananas.
Any ideas on what this is and why it happens?

I'm going with Musa 'Siam Ruby'.
ps the thread title was changed to reflect the "proper" name about two weeks or so ago. That's why some older posts' title will say "Siam Red". When Terry started this thread on it, it was a little less known and different names were being tossed around.

Anyone else notice that Siam Ruby seems to need a huge amount of water ? I've got mine in well drained potting soil with a bunch of Perlite in it. It's always at the very least well moist , but I've noticed after a heavy rain Siam Ruby's leaves are full and not looking wimpy like they do most of the time. Perhaps the wimpy look is because it still has a small root system and does not take up water on a hot day as fast as it needs too. Any ideas ?

Thanks , well at least it's not just me , it could be the colour of the plant too , being very dark leafed it must aborb more heat , this may increase the need for water as the speed the moisture evaporates from the leaf pores would increase with the heat . :camelnaner:

Hang in there, Miss Anna! My daughter, who is house sitting for me in Seattle (I'm still in Walnut Creek until the weekend), just called and said that the postman just delivered a box today from Mr. Brian. She hasn't opened it yet to confirm the color of the leaves, but I'm surely confident that they would be red. So yours should be coming anytime now!
Mr. Brian, thank you very much. You came through as usual!!!!

Aroidgrower/Brian - Thought you might not have received this:
Your website's mystery fern ...
In case you haven't found the variety name yet, I believe you might have a Nephrolepis pendula - Long John Pendulant Fern. I had one (till it got caught in an unexpected frost while I was out of town) that had to be hung from a tree limb, looonnnng fronds!
I plan on making a visit to try to grab one of yours soon, before they are all gone!

Joe: What size pot is it in?
Brian: Infreakincredible!
A new leaf just opened up on mine and has a strange gold tint to it. The 2 before it were almost pure white. They are starting to burn in the sun. The green and yellow striped leaves that opened before them still look pretty good. It's just now starting to grow fast and put out a new leaf every 5-6 days.
It's in full sun from about 7am until 5pm & the roots are staying between 80*-90*f.
I'm waiting to see what happens with this new "gold" leaf.

It's baseball season and I have a 10 year old boy who plays select ball, so I have not had much time to post pics. Nanaman has a great looking plant and that also keeps me from posting mine. I think you need to BAN nanaman from posting any more pics of the Siam.
I'm still sitting here looking at my pathetic replacement for the first green I got. It is still less than a foot tall. I truly think there will be various color combinations and he got a real good one. Unless my replacement reddens up a LOT as it gets bigger, I think mine will be Siam Ruby var. "Blush"

Terry, Post a picture of it, please... I think this plant is just awesome to look at no mater what stage it is at. When I first got mine, it didn't appear to have any red, then a little, then a little more etc... If it truly is a variant, that would make it even cooler!!! I thought about trying to get my hands on the Siam Green ( cool lime green color), but I just don't have any more room. BTW, Jarred's is probably bigger than mine, the last pics he posted looked great! I refuse to give this thing any special treatment, same as any other potted naner I have ( full sun, water, soil mix, fert, etc..). That means anyones Siam should look great, given a little time and TLC!

I just got Siam Ruby from Plant Delights nursery today. I believe they will be in the Fall catalog. After seeing a largeish one in person, it is a spectacular banana, and they have it planted so its the first thing you see when you drive in their driveway. Diana, I use about 50% Jungle Growth potting mix, 40% composted cow manure, and about 10% added vermiculite, plus a few handfuls of Pre Plant Plus 7-5-7 organic fert. I fertilize about once a month with whatever I have on hand at the time, some times palm fert., some times 10-10-10, miracle grow, etc... I water them every day, sometimes twice a day if its really hot, which it usually is. In colder climates this mix may hold too much water and cause rot, so be careful and adjust accordingly. Here in S.Fl. my potted plants show signs of water stress after 2/3 hours in direct sun. I realize this may seem like special treatment to some, but it is how I start all my potted naners. I would assume that most banana enthusiasts do something similar to this routine, and that should be sufficient! Potting a banana induces some stress on the plant, ( reduced root zone size) , so IMVHO, I believe it is imperative to start out with the best potting mix that you can! I hope this helps, BTW, I also would like to see an all green pup pop out, or even something in between!

Here are some pics of what I have seen out of Siam Ruby. I have put the name Siam peridot on the lime yellow to green form. This is named after a lime green gem stone. Mine lost several leaves to spider mites recently, happened very quickly before I caught it. It is still only about 6-8" tall, but seems to finally be picking up speed and size only now. Any time the nights drop into the 50's (which happened as recently as last week) it seems to stop growing and take a while to start again. It is far more sensitive than anything else I have.
On a side note, the pup it came with is now almost the same size as the mother, and my bet is it will overtake it and be the larger plant very soon.

A photo of your plant will help determine what may be the problem. In a lot of cases people over fertilize small plants or keep them overly watered. Not to mention bugs and other pest that are often over looked.
Pithy_Cherub
07-10-2007, 06:56 PM
The young Siams do seem to be very vulnerable to overwatering - I had to 'watch it' when watering when it first arrived. After it had a chance to develop/grow, this eased up considerably.

When I first recieved my plant I paid a lot of attention to it and it did grow slowly. I was one of the first to recieve one at least according to who posted that they recieved theirs. Now at this time of the year I have treated it like any other banana I have and it seems to be doing very well. I water it every other day and fertilize it every other week. I've still not planted it in the ground because I plan to grow it inside for at least one winter until I have more than the two I have now. I wish everyone the best of luck with theirs and even though I'm jealous of Bananamans pics I love to see what mine will look like in a couple of weeks. He seems to have a good head start on me.

I have given it water only when the soil seems to be dry and like I said at first it did fine but as the new leaves came out they were all green with no red and then it just stopped growing all together. I am sure it is not a watering issue because I have been very careful about this. I got an Ae Ae about the same time and it is doing very well with the same treatment. I don't know what the problem may be.
