Planning on collecting rain for watering these plants and wanted to kick it up a notch from the standard rain barrel- I'll be putting on a gutter that feeds into this thing: 250 gallons. I know it looks gruesome but, it used to contain "Mulch Die" so I know that whatever chemicals it may have contained will be safe for plants. I plan on raising it on concrete blocks and figuring how to adapt it from 2.5" to a standard garden hose.

Nice! I was out there in the heat today wishing I had a rain collection system to drip my plants with. Following along your thread to see how the final product looks. Thanks for sharing with us.

Some places have the 350's too.. I saw some on craigslist a couple weeks back. I think there's a port on the bottom of those tanks, might even be 1". :^)

It's got a huge hole with a screw lid on top- and the faucet is 2.5"-
I'll have to drill an overflow hole and attach a pipe.

If its plastic those plastic welders from Harbor freight, work really good. I've done a couple gas tanks with them. If its metal your going to need a sealed weld unless its on top. :^)

No, it's plastic- I figure with a hole saw and a threaded pipe, and some sealant will work. I could just drill the hole- but I'm going to try to pipe the overflow to an area with EE's that I'd like to keep wet.

A few years ago, I was leasing a piece of property where I had a 17' X 96' greenhouse. There was a lousy little shallow well there where, if you pumped 5 gallons out, you'd have to wait 15 or 20 minutes before you could get another 5 gallons. Since I was only renting, I didn't want to spend thousands for a new well. I decided to collect rainwater. I dug a hole behind the ghouse, lined it with poly, and erected a section of a smaller greenhouse over it. I put gutters along the main greenhouse, and collected. For every inch of rain we got, I put 1200 gallons in the tank.

It will be collecting from half my roof but I'm sure that will still fill up the 250gal fast. Just planning on putting it on drystacked concrete blocks 2 high,
