Yesterday I had to make a Home Depot run because I was out of Perlite and I need to separate some pups. Well I can't just go and get the Perlite, I have to look around. The had a nice banana tagged as a High Color Mini that I put in my buggy (was marked $19.98 but I bought for ten bucks). I went inside to the "tropicals" and found these poor pathetic bananas. There were three of them. An exuberant employee asked if I needed some help and I told him I was looking for some Perlite...yada, yada, yada, I asked him what he could about these little bananas. I told him they had mealy bugs and showed them to him and told him they were dying. He shrugged and said he just threw away $2000 worth of plants because they were wilted. He said if I wanted to buy one he would give me all of them. I said I would do that, they were marked $8.98. He went to the register with me and told the clerk to give me the little ones because they were dying and he would just throw them away. The register wouldn't let them zero out so they let me have them for a penny each. All three have one cute little healthy looking pup, so they came home with me. I immediately put them in my "ICU" isolation unit and started the process. We'll see what happens.

I'm sure you can resurrect them with a little careful attention. Plus the price was right, huh? :ha:

When I was down at charleston I went to lows (looking for tropical plants) and I found A banana plant in worse condition than yours, it said m basjoo (but it wasent ;)) I offered them one dollar for it. The person at the regester said that he would give it to me for free :woohoonaner:, but he had to talk to his manager. The lowest they would go is 50% off and I was like no way!! I was like look at that thing (all the leaves were dead but one) That thing was $20!! and I wasent going to pay $10 for it...

And Ime sure that they threw the poor banana it in the trash... I wanted to go dumpster diving that night there. :bananas_b

Thats a great find! I wish the people at my home depot were that nice (maybe they are and I just havent found a dead enough plant yet!!). It definitely looks like it will make it, but it shouldnt amount to anything really special until next summer.

Isolate the infected plants if you can. You can use a Q-Tip or cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol if you only have a few. If you have them badly, make a spray of the alcohol, dish soap and water and liberally spray the plants making sure to get down into the cigar leaf and on the underside of your leaves. You'll have to do this every week until they are gone.

I had a Lowe's employee tell me that I wouldn't believe what they throw away. Dumpster diving at these stores would be very interesting, for sure!!!!

use rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball and wipe off those mealy bugs. It will take a few times because you always miss some and some hatch out after you wipe, but you'll get them. Keep them away from anything you want to keep healthy though, just in case.
