View Full Version : What do I do now - Will I be able to keep my Pineapple?

My variegated pineapple has ripened and I have cut it off. Will the plant continue to live, or is it going to die? I love this plant and would really like to keep it going if that is possible. I know I can top the fruit and grow it, but I am wondering about the mother plant. I think I read that a pineapple will fruit twice or something. I don't know if it has already fruited once or not. It was fairly small when I bought it last year, but it was showing the tiny little fruit about the size of my thumb. It has not made any pups maybe because it was fruiting. I know we have several pineapple growers here and hope you can give me some advice. I would prefer to keep the mother plant intact if that is possible. Thanks!

I asked that very question to Nanaman and He told me they die just like Banana's. Sorry. At least you have a top to grow. :^)

Oh, that makes me sad! Will it make any pups? What is the "ratoon"? Just something that the professionals do or get? ~J

Janan - Pineapples are like bananas. They fruit once, and then die. Asthey are dying, they put out pups, shoots, slips and suckers, from below the fruit. New plants can be grown from these, or the top from a store bought fruit. They can also be grown from seeds.
Go to Google Images, and type in Pineapple plants. Go in a couple of pages, and you will see a diagram of where all the parts are formed.

Is this it John? Thanks for the guidance! I did not realize their were so many places to start plants from on the pineapple plant. I did try to Google before I asked. I went through 15 pages and hadn't found it, so I finally just typed in "pineapple diagram". I need to carefully examine my Momma plant for these slips and such to see if I have any.

JaNan - You got it. I was going to post it, but I thought there might be some copyright problems. Right now, I would say, after you harvest your fruit, just leave the momma alone. If it produces anything, that's just fine. If it doesn't, you haven't lost anything; you still have the top (crown)

Just leave it there Janan, you'll get a ratoon crop that has more and better tasting fruits! I don't think you need to remove the stand and replant until the 4rth or 5th ratoon crop. My Smooth Cayenne is on the 4th ratoon right now. The one original plant has now grown into several plants and I have 7 fruits growing at the moment. I also have several potted tops from all the harvested fruit that are ready to plant if I can ever find the space for them.
And congrats on the fruit! Let us know how you like it.

OK I twisted the top off, cut it up and ate it today. It was soooooo juicy, sweet and delicious. I shared it with my husband. It was the perfect size, and had a very small core so there wasn't a lot wasted! Anyway, you wanted me to let you know. The top is being planted so I hope I can get another one.

Looks delicious!!!!:woohoonaner:
Don't know if this is normal but this "Sugarloaf" is about 1 1/2 years old and hasn't fruited yet but has 3 "pups" .. I wouldn't give up till the bitter end.

Guys, for those in cooler climates, do you have to bring in the pineapple for the winter?

Yes Howard! I grew a gorgeous pineapple from a grocery store top. Had it for three years and it had grown to 3 feet by 3 1/2 feet. This past winter the cold snap we had here for a few days killed it and it was on my open front porch.

Most of my pineapples took a beating with our cold winter, all of the ones in containers eventually sent up new pups--even one that I pulled up and threw on the ground in my blueberry patch. The one I had in the ground did die completly. All of them were covered--they would have done better if I had room to bring them inside.
