I've got a pre-flag leaf.
I know "pre-flag?" But it's doing the same thing it did last year. It throws out a leaf that's about half the size, then another smaller one, then a flag, then a bloom. So maybe I'll have a bloom shortly!
This is on the same ice cream in the same pot that bloomed last year.

Sorry for the bad picture, but the sun was shining in my camera, and I was standing on a bench, and the leaf is about 5 feet over my head even standing on the bench. Hopefully you can see that the new leaf is rounded, blunt on the end, and only about 2 feet long.

Congrats Sandy!!:02: I think you mean that it's a pup of the one that bloomed LOL. What's up with all these northern IC's blooming?
Ahh yes...the flag of the flag of the flag LOL. Keep us posted with pics please:)

Yep, it's a pup of the one that bloomed last year, in the same big pot. I didn't divide it or anything, it's a mini-mat of five large stalks in a large pot. It does look like next year I'll have to divide it though because it hasn't put out any new pups this year. I think basically it's a big root in a big pot. I'm sure I won't get many bananas because the plant is so overcrowded.

Great info here that having the larger mother corm allowed such fast growth and possibly flowering to the young pup. Please keep us posted , if that's the case it might be another important piece of the puzzle for us gardeners in the north to achieve some success.

Congrats Sandy!:woohoonaner:

This must be the year for Ice Creams LOL. Congrats Stumpy!
1aday, Sandy did get about 24 nanas but the heater went out in greenhouse & they sadly froze:(. I got a flower in June but had all male blossoms & no nanas. Then, couple weeks later, my other IC bloomed & now I have 18 nanas growing:) (in a pot outside)

Congrats!! Its blooming in a pot? Thats really impressive! Im putting my Ice cream banana in the ground next year because I want it to get some good height. Im hoping for blooms in 2 years from it. Yours looks like it will be starting to bloom in 2 weeks!! What do you do when winter comes? Do the fruit mind the change of environment when they go inside? Thanks for sharing. I love to see bananas fruiting up north because it gives me hope that my banana plants will fruit too one day!!

Do you find this to be an easy one to get fruit off of up here? I need to get a banana to fruit.. I would prefer one of the small bananas like 1000 fingers ...?

Good job on the fruit..

3 of us have had this variety flower in zone 5 and 6 this year so it's a good choice if you can overwinter a tall plant or get lucky with the timing if you have to cut it back each fall like I do.

Hammer, I dig mine up and place them under my porch, its about 40 degrees there and pitch black dark. I pull it out in spring and replant it. It took 2 years to flower. Hope this helps.

One year I bare rooted them (2 IC) & layed them on floor in cool sunroom & covered them. Last winter I kept it potted & in sunroom where it was semi dormant. The other was under grow lights during winter & carted outside in spring where it suffered shock.
They were 2 tiny tc's when I got them in 06.
Sandy, aren't you gonna lift the 3rd petal & peek like I did? :):)

The IC was overwintered the past two seasons actively growing albeit slowly on my front porch. I have too many large plants now and will be dormant bare rooting more and more each winter. It seems to work pretty well and the plants start growing quick enough when they're planted inground in spring.

I think there's 22 fingers on it. But I bet that's all there's going to be. I had 21 on it last year.

I dn't know, but I"m going to go have a pep talk to mine first things in the morning! I don't want Bob to beat me with a pup off my own plant!

There are two more little fingers on it that will probably not make anything, but if you count them, then there's 24. So there Bob!LOL....
