View Full Version : Kluai Hom Tong ( Gros Michel)
I couldn't resist ordering when I saw these available from Thailand Plant online. It took the package a month to arrive though and the corm was partially rotted but I think there's enough solid corm left that there's a chance for at least some pups to grow out of it. If it does it will be interesting to see what if any differences there are between that and the"Bluefields" from Hawaii.

How do we know it is a real gros michel? Keep us updated.
Here's what Gabe 15 had to say in another thread:
" Gros Michel cultivars are fairly distinguishable from others in most cases, they have very prominent open and spreading petiole canals with distinct red coloration, especially on the wings."
...and a closeup of my "Bluefields" ( Gros Michel) petiole showing what this looks like so if the one from Thailand comes out something like this I'll be fairly sure of it.

It's going to take some nurturing and some luck to get that little guy going!
If you're going to brag about any successes you might as well admit the failures..... it's dead as a doornail and did nothing but rot in its pot.... was worth a try though.
I always tell friends that the best gardeners are the one who've killed the most plants...... well ... guess I'm pretty good then:ha:

Whats the story behind your "Bluefields" from Hawaii?
Jarred, long story behind them and I'll PM you on it but ... long story short. After a prolonged "buying period" I got 3 from a nursery in Hilo last September and one lived over the winter. It's doing great and I've already sent a pup to Mitchel, next one goes to Brent in Texas. It's throwing out tons of pups and unlike my other bananas , I want to get as many pups to people around the country to keep this particular variety going so I'm letting them get bigger than I would on my other plants before removing them. This is from a month ago and it's in a 25 gallon pot and will go in the ground next spring.
