View Full Version : Has Anyone Tried This? If so, What were your Results?

I have a very large corm which has several "eyes" on it. I have read about stressing the corms to stimulate pupping. I thought and thought about this and wanted to try this. I haven't really seen anything on this, this way - but maybe I just haven't queried the words properly in the search mode. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has tried this and what their results were.
The corm has not flowered and currently in a growing stage. I took a decent size chunk out of the corm centering around a prominent eye. About the size of a generous piece of cake. The corm is planted in the ground and I have planted the eye as well. Comments and suggestions appreciated! Thanks!

Yes, this works just fine, although its sometimes better they go into containers first so you can make sure they stay moist since they can dry out very easily in this stage. There are methods in which you can go even further and get many more plants from one corm than simply looking at the number of "eyes" (larger apical buds) it has. The techniques in general are called macropropagation and you may find some information on some of the methods if you search with that term. Even very small corm pieces can sprout new shoots so long as there is a bud. I am currently working on a small, illustrated guide to show the different macropropagation methods.

Thanks GABE! That is what I wanted to hear. This is how I planted the eye - the pot is 1 gallon placed inside a 2 1/2 gallon container that has water in it. I thought watering from the bottom would be best. I will search again using macropropagation!

This has probably 75 to 80 percent Perlite with the balance is organic compost. Should I decrease the Perlite ratio, since it pulls moisture away? There is good condensation on the lid.

You can easily propegate from a large plant by just chopping it off at the base. It will put all its energy into producing pups (and often makes quite a few). You can also chop it off, dig it up and just hack the corm into pieces and toss them somewhere shady. If they get watered and don't dry out too badly, they'll usually grow into new plants. You don't really have to do anything special with them....toss them in a compost pile and forget about them LOL.
Thanks for this story....let us know how it turns out!

Not exactly what I want to do with a corm that I've put this much money into Doc! HA! HA! Cut it up and throw it in the shade and wishful think. NAH! Basically I want my cake and want to eat it too. I want to keep my corm intact and let it grow AND make numerous pups at a more rapid rate than if letting nature take it's course. This macropropagation seems like a good way to go. We'll see what happens, I'll let you know! :) ~J

No, Doc - even if it does work well I don't think I want to try that!!!! I'm a tad bit more cautious than that, though maybe not much. This thing cost more than my California Gold and Ae combined! I figured you all would think I was crazy doing this much! :ha: ~J

Ya that is an ok one, but it really is actually weak on explaining what to do and there are some improved methods involved too to get the most out of each corm. I just need to finish the photo sets and then I'll be done, should be a in the next few months. I'd rather post it once and just be able to refer to it than keep writing the same thing over and over again, and plus without the proper photos its somewhat hard to conceptualize exactly what to do.

I just recently cut a 24 inch pup off of my Dwarf Ladyfinger. It was the only pup the plant ever had, and I got the plant in August of last year. This was 1.5 weeks ago. It has now sent up 5 pups since then. I only cut the pup because the mother plant was slowing down very much, and I was hoping to get faster growth in the summer this year.

Hi Jon! How many of these actually grew into pups for you? Do you have any pictures of them? I know in the link for this thread you said 5 out of the 9 were good enough to make pups.
I just cut one out of the corm leaving the original corm intact and re-planted the big corm - I did not cut it up. I was curious if any one had done this (replanting the original corm) and if it affected the mother corm and if the removed eye made a pup or pups. ~J

About a month and a half ago I did this with two large Manzano corms. So far 12 have started to grow. Once they break the surface they grow very fast.

I know I probably shouldn't be doing this, but patience is not one of my virtues. I took the corm out of my starter soil to see if I could tell if I killed it or had any kind of results AND here are some pictures showing what I found this morning - 7/29/10. (It is wet and shiny because I rinsed it off for examination and photos.) I have some growth on my corm chunk, I also have leaf growth on the mother corm. So, I don't think I have caused any damage to mother and I am really excited about seeing growth on the chunk. What doesn't show in the pictures are several new little eye bumps that I am hoping will make roots too. I guess this is what I am wanting, right? I may cut them off this larger chunk and plant them separately.
This only had one root on it when I planted it

Yay Migael!!! Did you plant the mother corm back in the ground, or did you cut it up to get the eyes? Did you plant the eyes just in the ground or is that in a big pot? Any special treatment? How are you maintaining moisture?

Well when I went to Steves the corm in question here growing may have another eye as well? But that piece of corm was attached to 2 pups and the other I planted I found on the sack with all the dirt. One is in a pot, this on is in the ground. :^) This came about since I knew the corm was attached to the pups and felt it was soft so I decide they needed to be on their own. I trimmed the corm to get rid of the soft stuff and stuck it in an empty hole. :^)

I did the same thing with a DC I wintered indoors. My dog got excited one day and jumped on the pot. She broke the main pstem. I ended up cutting the pstem down. In the process, I decided to separate the 3 pups. I cut off the 3 pups and had a nice chunk of corm where the main pstem used to be. I stuck that chunk in a pot.
That same chunk grew into a beautiful plant and has 2 pups of its own now :)

Here are a couple of pictures of the corm chunk. Not much happening, but there is a touch of green there on the bump. It's still alive anyway. The root is getting a bunch of little hairy roots on it. That's about it.

So, I have developed tendonitis in my knee and my plans to plant the new farm are a little more difficult due to the pain. I've thought about maybe doing this macropropagation thing but I'm not entirely sure how to proceed. It seems like the easiest method would be to put the corm in a pot or bag and let it sucker. I do like the idea of using corm bits though. With the corm in a pot method would I transfer the suckers to like a 1 or 2 gallon pot before planting in the field? With the bit method, should I hot water treat the bits?
