Shortly after 5pm, we got severe thunderstorms & a few tornados. Then flash flooding...8 inches in less than 2 1/2 hours is a LOT!! Streets & freeways closed...people stuck in their cars in streets. Several started floating & some had to be rescued as the cars turned upside down.
2 ppl got struck by lightning...oh man, I never saw so much lightening! Sounded like a war zone... bombs- shaking my house. Manhole covers popped off from too much water in sewers. Few blocks away from me, a car fell into a sinkhole...about 15 ft down... about 3-4 cars wide. The driver will be OK. He just filled up w/ gas & a stop light pole fell in on top of his car. They were worried about it blowing up maybe from live wire from pole. Popular street will be closed off for a long time now fear of more caving in. Lots of power out so ppl can't pump water out of their basements. Streets & yards look like lakes & rivers. I have about 2 inches water in my backyard... not bad, but I never had this before. Thank God I have a sump pump. It empties every 20 minutes or so...18 times now since it starting filling up!! I missed the national news tonight...our local news stayed on to report. I unplugged my puter cuz of all the lightning. My, it was a wild scary day. Now it's very humid & so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Did Chicago or anyplace else get these storms? Only our local news was on for hours.

Thanks Ante, so far no one died. Red Cross gave shelter to several ppl & I heard FEMA might help. I'm soooo glad that my power didn't go out...my basement would be full of water. There are a lot of cars in middle of streets getting towed away. Ppl not realizing how deep puddle was & went thru only to get stalled engines. I heard a house is falling into a big sinkhole somewhere. We never had a storm this bad.

That's some incredible weather! Thanks for the news link, Greg. A whole house in a sinkhole?! Stay safe and away from water. Flooding causes very strong currents.

Thanks for that Greg. Did you click on the slideshow? It shows better pics of car w/ light pole on it. Too bad they didn't show the many streets that had 4 ft water & water gushing out of manholes. I think we will be declared a 'disaster' area.
Plants are OK - only one fell over. They are heavy from being waterlogged LOL. Now, they need to dry up.
I have 6 concrete steps from sidewalk to front porch & walkway to backyard. Yesterday water was flowing down those steps so fast, it looked like a waterfall - with whitecaps. I woulda needed someone pulling me up w/ a rope to get up them LOL

That sounds really intense, Patty! I'm glad you're alright! We actually had something that sounds fairly similar on Wednesday afternoon. It rained 7+ inches within a matter of an hour or two and they had to close down several main interstates/highways/streets. It was accompanied by a lot of intense thunder/lightning. I was giving an exam during part of the storm and it was kinda loud, even with windows closed. Which do you like better? One *THUNDER CRASH* or two?

I feel so sad...a 19 yr old UWM student's body was found yesterday morning. His car drifted in a creek (or something)...water 3/4 up his windows, he was yelling for help. Divers came & no one was in car. He musta climbed out window & current took him.
One of the ppl struck by lightning is still in coma. 11 houses (so far) have been condemned to be tore down. Water washed away foundations & they are full of sewage. One woman lived there for 52 years & does'nt know where to go. I still feel so lucky to not have the sewer backup. When you get sewage, everything it touches must get thrown out. I don't know why our sewers couldn't handle the rain. What does New York & Chicago & other big cities do? Storm did more damage than originally thought - now that I see it all on news.

Hi Patty,

I am glad you and your family are safe.

I lived close to a small stream when I lived near La Crosse and our house was destroyed in the big floods in the spring of 2008. I know exactly what everyone there is going through and it is no fun.

Just read today on Yahoo News that Lake Delhi, a man-made lake in Iowa somehow sprung a leak after some high waters and it broke the dam and drained completely out! The lake used to be like 9 miles long or so!

I saw that! Someone video taped that. Mother Nature is being a real bitch lately.
Oh, forgot to say that 50 manhole covers blew off last Thursday...some 40-50 ft - & they are HEAVY!.

It was raining so hard (like all get out) in Shreveport when I was driving to lower ground it looked like water was coming up out of the drains. :^)
