Hello everyone. It's my first time posting. I'm in Southern California and currently have 16 varieties of banana growing in my yard (most of them small) as well as several varieties of palms, ginger and other tropical plants. Hopefully I'll see some fruit this year.
I'm looking to add a variegated banana to my collection. Any suggestions?

Welcome, plundccre, to the org. from the beautiful state of Maryland. There are a number of variegated bananas for you to consider, ranging from the reasonable to the terribly expensive. I'd start with Musa zebrina, which has beautiful red/maroon splotches on the leaves. Siam Ruby is another suggestion. If money is no object, go for Ae Ae, which is green and white. It needs to be out of the burning sun, however. With 16 varieties already, your garden must be beautiful. Why don't you take some pics and post them in your gallery?

Thanks for the replies. We I mentioned variegated varieties, I guess I wasn't thinking. I already have Siam Ruby, Musa Zebrina and a red splotched dwarf Cavendish. I would like to add something with the white/yellow on the leaves like one of the Thai varieties or an Ae Ae.

Hello Peter & Welcome to the Org. from the Sportsman's Paradise. :^) Good Luck with fruit. I can't help you on the AeAe or Variegated front but many that can. :^)

Welcome to the site! Look in "Main Banana Discussions" for a thread by Clare CA. She was giving a lot of information about variegated Thai banana plants!

Welcome to the org! I hope you learn and share lots of information on banana plants and all the many others we talk about here! As for a variegated banana I say ae ae banana all the way! But its a little expensive so siam ruby might be a good starter since they are also variegated (not white variegation, but red and yellow) and cheaper. I think Siam ruby is also a better potted plant and a little easier to care for.
