View Full Version : Thia Giant EE growth habit

I've got a Thia Giant that's starting to get 3'+ leaves and it's just done something that seems a little odd:
Normally EE's have leaves that come out of the stem of the preceding leaf, but with the latest leaf- another "spike" came out that has a leaf (the "spike" came out the center, not the side like a pup)- so I'm getting a new leaf out of the last leaf and from the new "spike"
I've never seen it with another EE. Is that normal? Is it just because the plant's very happy?

Hmmm.....interesting! I'd let it go and see what develops! Keep us updated!

Do you think you can post a pic? It would help a lot. Thanks.

Here you go, the leaf on the right is the newest it appeared around the same time as the "spike" in the middle, but as you can see it didn't come from the leaf:

At first I thought it was a flower or something similar. I've just always had the leaf come from the stem of the previous leaf.

Now that is definitely new to me!! Thanks for the pic. Hope someone else has an answer.

Looks kinda like it might be blooming! Not sure how the bloom comes out on these as mine aren't large enough to bloom yet. I just know the flower has a spathe/spadix like a lot of other aroids. Keep us updated!

I thought it might be a bloom too, but it's definitely a leaf- that's why it's so strange- it'd be like a Banana having 2 cigar leaves at once.
So really ? No one else has ever seen this?

Why couldn't it be a bloom AND a leaf? EEs are not monocarpic like bananas, for the record.

I guess that's possible- though It would be weird to have a leaf come out independently like that with our without a bloom. It's definitely a leaf first. I guess I'll know if it's just a leaf in a couple days.

Yeah, I really don't know for sure how their blooming evolves out of normal growth. Just tossing suggestions out of what it COULD be. I had something sorta similar happen on a small stingray....sent out a leaf from the center....thought it was gonna have two growth points or something, but it just turned out that the leaf popped out the center rather than the base of the previous leaf.

That could be true too... I haven't seen the previous leaf begin to open for it's next leaf yet....though since this one came out with it's own "case" and all- I'm still hoping for 2 growth points.

Yeah, the 'case' was what lead me to believe it might be a bloom. It looks reminiscent of the spathe of the blooms. If you haven't seen one, I can try to find you a pic. They look kinda like a peace lilly/calla lilly but different colors.

Turns out there is a Bloom! BUT it's coming out of the old leaf not the new Case that shot up from the middle.
Now that I'm getting a bloom what should I do? Cut it to give more vigor to the leaves? I don't really know of any to pollinate it- to get seedlings....

I remember a friend telling me to cut it on EE's and caladiums to enhance leaf production.

Wow...definitely not what I expected it to do. So why are you considering removing the flower....why not just let it do its thing?

Read the plant spends more energy in flowering- and the leaves might not get as big.
