View Full Version : California Gold in Europe
Hi everybody,
about a month ago I received a nice corm of a Musa California Gold which cam from Jeff Earl.
I planted it right away and didn't mind the journey of about two weeks and rooted well and started growing after three weeks.
Here it is on July 6th:

Now - ten days later - the first leaf has unfolded and the second is coming up. It's now 20 cm/8 inches at the p-stem:

The funny thing is, that this leaf is not consistently green. It shows darker and lighter areas, almost like a "soft variegation". Did anybody see this before on a CalGol? Will it maybe go away with new leaves coming?
Here's a close-up of the leaf:

(The units on the stick are in centimeters)

Thanks for sharing Tony,
so in the beginning there is/might be a little variation in the leaf color, but this will be gone soon...

I don't know if it's normal or what caused it.
Is this a pup coming up soon? (If yes: Ante it might be yours :-))
I checked my California Gold today and decided to put it in a bigger pot, because the corm grew and the pot seemed to small (the pot on the pic is not the pot I used before! I just put it in there for taking the picture).
After removing a bit of the soil I discovered this:

Closer:

This might be a pup? If yes, it'll be my first one since starting to grow bananas!!!!:woohoonaner:
And the Cali. Gold will go in the ground after my holiday at the end of August!

Yeah, I'd call that a future pup. Some of those never emerge unless something sends them a signal to grow, it seems. A guy from Israel visited last year and wanted a Praying Hands. Since my mother plant's growth got stuck, I dug up that corm and just kept its pups in the ground. The corm was large and had about six eyes like what yours shows. He decided it was too big to take back home in his luggage so I chopped it in half. he later reported he got 3 pups from that half and I gave the other half to a neighbor. I don't think all of those pups would have emerged on their own if it was just left in the ground but the stress encouraged them to grow.
