Dear all,

I have a small Ensete glaucum. It is only 30 cm tall. I keep it oustide and I will recover it in October. I'd like to plant it directly into the ground next spring. I live in Italy (zone 8a/8b).
Has anyone experience with this species in zone 8?
Has anyone kept it in the ground during the winter? With what protections?

best regards
Stefano

Stefano- Sorry for the delay in responding. I grow my glauca outside in the ground, but dig it up and store it bare root in my basement over the winter. No light beyond mild ambient light, and no water. This year it has grown so big that I'm considering potting it up and keeping it in my family room next to my large potted dwarf cavendish and maurelli. Good luck. Mine is 3+ years old.

I love your web site! I worked in the area of marine and reef tanks for years, and grow some of the many palms you have listed. The photography is excellent. Looking forward to learning from you here by your contributions.

You should be able to grow it outdoors in the ground without any fears for quite a few months in your zone. When it starts to get cold at night, pot it up and move it indoors (I'm not entirely sure on cold hardiness for E. glaucum, but baased on other ensetes, it will probably need to be moved inside). You could try dormant overwintering, or I prefer overwintering things alive in a south-facing window (if you have the space).
