I just came across a nice Cardaba. Anyone have the real scoop on these guys? The facts and height information vary wildly on this variety. What about hardiness? I assume they are relatively hardy and large if they are in the Saba subgroup. Any information is welcome.

I am not an expert..but I do not think they are in the Saba/Praying Hands/Pitoga sub group..hopefully Chong can pipe in on this one.

Very tall, shorter, fat fruit. Very bright, maybe citrusy, flavor. Pups well.

My cardaba had no damage over the winter, but it never saw freezing temperatures. It has grown about 4' so far this year. It has just started getting off-shoots. It's the one on the left.

I just saw this after I read Chris' PM just now. Yes, it is part of Saba sub-group with Praying Hands. They are classified as ABB Genome, but sometimes confused with BBB. [From Banana Plantain Overview by Dr. Nelson of UH: "Saba subgroup
‘Benedetta’
‘Inabaniko’, ‘Uht Kapakap’ (Pohnpei); ‘Praying Hands’
(Florida); ‘Ripping’ (Philippines)
‘Cardaba’
A Philippine cooking banana. With ‘Saba’, it was classified
erroneously as having a BBB genome.
‘Saba’ (Philippines)
Other common names: ‘Pisang Kepok’ (Indonesia); ‘Pisang
Abu Nipah’ (Malaysia); ‘Kluai Hin’ (Thailand)
The male bud of this clone is a popular vegetable in the
Philippines.]
They are cooking bananas and not a plantain type. Once cooked and cut up, it would be difficult to distinguish them from each other by taste.
Sorry, I couldn't "chime" in earlier, but I just started working in Richland, WA a few weeks ago and my office computer is blocked from non-business related sites. And then, connection to the net from my home there is rather slow. I go back to my Seattle home (225 miles each way) on weekends where I am working on a lot of badly needed big-time maintenance projects. It sure feels good to be working again after a 14-month layoff!
