These are pictures from last year of my ensete ventricousm that is going to bloom this year will try to post pictures of its progress as the flower gets to the bloom here are a few pics of it .yesterday Banana Gallery - ENSETE VENTRICOSUM FLOWER (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=34058&cat=500&ppuser=5713http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=34059&cat=500&ppuser=5713)
This the first banana plant that I have grown and of course now I am hooked on them. It is hard to grow them this large in Canada with all the winter headaches of where to put it. It has been an amazing plant. I hope the flower is over before frost I am not sure how long that takes to happen.

http://http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=27463&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=27463&ppuser=5713)I have kept in a greenhouse the last 2 years , but last year I had to move it at Christmas because the greenhouse went bankrupt so I moved it to another greenhouse which it was to big for and it stayed in the potting area with only lights no sun it didn't like that to much and I think that shocked it into blooming this year. If you go through Burford stop in.Banana Gallery - FINALLY IN NEW SPOT FOR WINTER (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=24430&cat=500&ppuser=5713)

What size pot do you have it in? ~J
zoloff
07-15-2010, 05:12 PM
Janana the pot is about 3 1/2 ft high by 4 1/2 ft wide. It makes you feel like Mr. Wilson waiting for this plant to bloom.

I'm just blown away looking at this plant...... IN A POT!! At first I thought it was going to be a photo shop joke...I kept scrolling down.... no joke!! I cracked up about your comment relating to Mr Wilson waiting for the bloom. I saw that movie!:ha:
Looking forward to watching this bloom progress! I have a small Ensete Ventricosum that I can see has great potential in a pot if it's big enough.
What a green thumb you have! Congrats!!! :woohoonaner:

moving it last fallhttp://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=23847&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=23847&ppuser=5713)I give it lots of fertilizer about 8 to 10 pails a week of miracle gro 24 8 16 and fish emulsion 5 1 1 it seemed to love it and all my other banana plants seem to respond very good to that mix. I HAVE ABOUT 30 MORE ENSETES ON THE GO RIGHT NOW SO HOPEFULLY I HAVE A FEW BIG ONES again next year. My largest one this year is a about ten ft and it is a maurelii and we have about 12 weeks of growing time outside left so it could get fairly big before then, I am going to repot that one this week into a bigger pot .

HERE IS A PICTURE OF THE WHOLE PLANT THIS YEAR . NO BIG LEAVES LIKE LAST YEAR AFTER IT'S HARD WINTER, IT SEEMS THE PLANT'S WHOLE EFFORT IS TO PRODUCE THE FLOWER, AND THEN IT IS GONE BUT IF I AM LUCKY MAYBE I WILL GET SOME SEEDS. IT WAS AN AWESOME PLANT MAYBE IT WILL GIVE ME A FEW MORE.http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=34928&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=34928&ppuser=5713)[img]http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=34899&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=34899&ppuser=5713)

That's a really huge one for the pot, good job. Do you remember where you bought the seeds? The seeds I've grown from bananatree.com have had red p-stems, and I wouldn't mind growing some with green p-stems like yours. Thanks.

The Seeds For The Green Rib Are From Thompson And Morgan I Have Also Grown Banana Tree Ones They Are All Red Ribbed, It Seems That The Green Ribbed Ones, Grow Taller And The Leaf Is Slightly Different In Shape. They Seem Harder To Germinate Than The Ones From Banana Tree For Some Reason And The Seeds Are About Twice The Size. If You Have A Hard Time Finding Some I Have Some Seeds From T&m And Hopefully I Will Have Some From My Plant Which I Could Send You Later If You Would Like.
