This afternoon I went out to feed my fish. I threw in the food like I normally do they are usally all jumping all over the place,I did not see them, I thought oh well maybe they did not see me. I went around the pound and looked under plants and they were no fish. There all gone. I had these fish for about five years. I donot know what happened unless one of those big birds came and found them I have a shade over the pound I donot think one of those birds could see the pond.Im very sad ,its like life went away from the pond . I feel such a emptiness now. :( I miss my fish so much

Oh I'm so sorry Greg. How disappointing. I know just how you feel, as my pond fish were killed last year by thieves that dumped it!

I have a feeling that coons may be your culprit. They are notorious for swiping fish out of ponds and last year many of my gardening pals had it happen to them too.

If you can provide a place for the fish to hide though, this can stop racoons from ever getting them.

Sorry for your loss. Sucks

Dude! That is sad! There are plenty of animals that will eat fish. You might want to consider putting a screen over the pond. Don't let it down you, though, get some more fish and try again. I had to use chicken wire to keep my fish safe from my pet racoon but I finally had to sell the racoon [way destructive]! I wish you the best!

Hollyberry Lady and I seem to have posted at the same time, lol! Hollyberry, the "safe place to hide" didn't work with my pet racoon. It just waited for the fish to finally have to come out.

So sorry Greg.... after 5 years I'd be upset too. I recently bought 10 goldfish to eat up mosquito larvae in my pond & just a few days later I only saw 3 fish. I thought they were hiding under the lily pads but next day there were none. I then trapped the raccoon.
I didn't have the fish long enough to get attached to them but I know how you feel. I will just go buy more now.

Yeah, I would bet money raccoons were the culprit of your missing fish. They like to look for easy-to-catch food sources like that. They also have the ability to grab them with their opposable thumbs. Birds may have done it, but I would bet more on raccoons. Sorry to hear about your fish, Greg.

I'd lay a trap for the culprit. Then give it swimming lessons like Patty. :^) Sorry of your fishes demise.. Hope they were only Goldfish.

Man greg that sucks. I had a pond 4 years ago and had beautiful koi, Went to bed one night and woke up the next day and there all dead. I gave up at that point and now recently have gotten back into fish.

I had two prize gold fish and the others were feeder fish that I saved there lifes. These fish were like my children I even ordered them high grade food from the net and they were perrty big. They lived a good life here and now that they crossed over they will be at peace. I saw the big white bird this morning it came back for more. I would shoot it but its protected here in California !

sorry for your fish.

since they probably wont land in the water they prefer to walk into the water you could put a small inexpensive solar powered electric fence around the pond. it wont look like it did before but it will knock the bird back. after a being popped a few times he probably wont return.

those things can eat up hundreds of dollars worth of fish in one sitting.

I maintained a pond in an area full of coons, skunks, and herons for years using an electric fence meant for dogs (less power?) on cut-down 4" plastic posts (painted pond colors). around the water...only had troubles when snow covered so much that the coons just walked over the wire...also bought cheaper fish, plus brought in some from my fishing trips...

So sd to hear the loss of your fish. I know you miss them.
I have wire over my pond and wooden poles on another to keep my dogs ou of the water. I know about fish loss. Better luck with the next ones.

We border woods & there is a family of raccoons
Plus some hawks that circle around

Thats very sad. I cant imagine how quiet your pond must be without them. But dont let a stupid wild animal discourage you from trying fish again. Before you buy them you can try to improve your pond by adding more hiding spots such as rocks and plants and maybe making it deeper if possible. Maybe you can even extend your pond if its possible. I would definitely add a wall of rocks arounf it to keep mammals from jumping into it. Some motion decetion lights might scare them off too. And if your really paranoid about it you can get a net to put over it and take it off when you have company.

Good luck. May those fish rest in peace : (

I have heard about automatic sprinklers that are set off by motion. So when an animal comes near the pond the sprinklers go off and scare the animal away. Might be worth looking into if you do decide to try the fish again.

But be sure you disable it before you go to feed your fish....or you'll end up with wet clothes :ha:

I'd put out a killing bait.. birds will be falling out of the sky.. or you'll had to take out a couple coons in the trash.. :^)

Just make your pond a bit bigger and toss in a few of these:
http://www.landbigfish.com/images/fishingspots/cat31.jpg
I doubt any bird will even TRY to take one of those down!

And if they don't have any of those at your local fish store, maybe try some of these:

I wonder if those fish eat the same brand of fish food as koi? :)

john_ny

Could be. I, once, had an aquarium fish business, and asked the people that I got my goldfish and some of the koi from, what they fed their fish. They told me, "Purina Catfish Chow."
