I know i cant be the only one who has done this....lol. I have been pretty impressed by how much my basjoo was growing so i decided to break out the ol tape measure and really see how much it was growing in a day. Its cigar leaf grew over 8 inches in one day. What are some of your records???

some of my leaves only grow 6 -8 inches. :)

Well I have thought about it, but never measured. I am going to have to check out a few plants.

My neighbors must already think I have a mental problem, always outside giving my plant strange looks.

The fastest growth I have is on an Ensete glaucum. It puts out a new 6-7' leaf every 4 days. When a new leaf opens, the next leaf is already about 2' out, so I bet it gets 8-12" per day. The edible bananas I have probably do 4-6"/day.

Compare that to my fastest growing palms which get 1-2"/day tops!

8"/day on a basjoo is awesome!!! You're doing something right :D

I've never really measured, but I'm pretty sure I've gotten close to 12" in a day's time before. Given proper conditions, bananas grow VERY fast. That's one of the main reasons I grow them....because they are very charismatic plants (if that adjective even can apply to plants). They change so fast day to day that they are fun to grow. Rather than seeing a plant put out a new leaf every now and then, you can almost WATCH bananas grow! I put a mark on a new leaf once just to see how fast it was growing, and it was up another centimeter within an hour or two!

Abnshrek

I'd say its 12-18" in a day for a larger plant in great conditions, maybe even 2ft of leaf growth. :^)

That made me laugh.. & think of "how not to mark your banana's for dummies".. Don't mark the center if the leaf is coming up you won't be able to see your mark till the leaf is opening. :^)

Great idea for a thread! :D I'm totally new to growing banana plants and I only have one [a DC]. But I measured it last night, from the ground to the tip of the new unfurled leaf, and it was 15 1/4 inches. I'll start measuring it every night and keep a log. I have a Black Thai and Ice Cream, coming in the mail, that were shipped yesterday. I'll keep a log on those too! :D

i know exactly how you feel. i am out there lookin, touching the leaves to measure how much is grown and checking for pups. they just look at me like what the hell is that kid doing!

Took a couple of basjoos to a flea market, a couple of years ago. One had just about a half inch of the little squiggly thread, at the tip of the leaf, showing in the morning. I t was one of the last items sold and, at that time, it was up about 5 inches, so a gain of about 4½ inches in 8 hours.

Yup yup...sounds about right. They grow crazy fast if you have a way of accurately seeing how fast they actually are growing.

That's why I'm using a yardstick and measuring from the ground to the tip of the newest leaf. That's also why I've made a chart. When I posted the latest photo of it in the "share an image" thread, I measured it first [at 11 pm last night] and it was 15 1/4 inches tall [using method above]. I measured again at 2:30 pm, today, and it was 16 inches tall! :D I'll measure it again at 11 pm and put that on the chart!
Btw, I don't include the curly thread at the end, Lol!

My thai black puts out about a foot of its new leaf on warm days. At that rate a new leaf would open about every 3 days!

My neighbors must think I'm crazy too. I go out and look at my bananas several times a day. I just had surgery on my right foot (it's in a cast). Yet I still hobble outside on crutches a couple times each day to look at the nanas :D

Almost sounds like me (the same thing with my R foot, but I broke it first)... I'd push my butt out there in my wheelchair several times a day.. I know the neighbors think I'm off my rocker.. Especially trying to drag a hose in that bad boy trying to push myself at the same time... :^) :0519:

I just got my first measurement for my banana plant growth log! At 11 pm last night, my DC was 15 1/4 inches tall. Now [11 pm], it's 16 1/2 inches tall! That's 1 1/4 inches in one day!

It has been 23.5 hours since I marked 4 of my bananas. Here are the results:

Raja puri - 4"

Cardaba - 6"

Ice cream - 11"

Ensete glaucum - 15"

Abnshrek

You know there's a possible compounded growth.. If two leaves are coming out at the same time; the end of one and the start of another.. do you add the numbers together? :^)

Velutina
06-20-2010, 12:16 PM
I measured the spear relative to the leaf it was emerging from (marks on both leaves). If you measure from the ground, I definitely see what you're saying Abnshrek :)

Wow 15" on the Ensete glaucum....How tall is it and do you have any pics of it?

There is definitely a difference between total growth and total height. Total Growth will always be more than total height. :^)

The pseudo-stem is maybe 3-4' tall and the leaves are at least 6'. It puts out leaves really fast, but doesn't gain much pseudo-stem height. I planted it about a year ago when it was 6" tall.

Compare that to the Cardaba (planted August 2009) which pushes out leaves slowly compared to the Ensete, yet the peudo-stem grows rapidly.

Cardaba on left. Ensete on right.

from a cigar to burrito.

I fed my plants some 5-1-1 fish emulsion so hopefully I will see some good results.

Roflol! I hope DC's like cherry and pineapple Crush... or cherry 7up! I measured mine [from the ground to tip of new leaf again] at 11 pm last night. It was 17 1/4 inches tall. It got slower. That's only 3/4 inch in 24 hours. But the new leaf totally unfurled! Now I got a new problem. When the leaf flops over, it will be about 6 inches shorter. :(

Best method here would be to measure leaf length from where it emerges from the last leaf rather than total height. As Michael said, there is some compound growth, where several leaves are pushing out simultaneously. So I would change to measuring leaf length (straighten it out to measure) rather than total height for more accurate measurements.

natej740
06-21-2010, 02:46 PM
When I did my original measurement it was from ground to tip of the new leaf. So that would give you the total growth(p-stem and new leaf) not just the leaf growth. I know it will be hard to do if you have huge plants but that is the only way to see the true growth...

I think I'll use your method. Anything else would just get me more confused and that's just too easy to do, lol! :D

Well, total growth is a decent measurement...but it is limited in usefulness since it is a combination of several measurements of individual leaves' growth. I find the most accurate measurement is leaf measurement (plus it's easier to manage on a medium-large plant).

Abnshrek

Total growth is a much easier way to track if you banana is maintaining output. As the plant gets bigger you will see the time for new leafs to come up is minimal as the last leaf fully extends into position when it warm, hot even. This isn't so necessarily in cool conditions. :^)

CoryS
06-22-2010, 01:26 AM
I measured my DC again [ground to tip of new leaf] and it's 17 3/4 inches tall now. It's even slower now since that's only 1/2 inch new growth. But there is another new leaf starting now! :D
Btw, I was going to use the "leaf-only" method for measuring but that was getting me even more confused. For now, the new leaf is zero inches since all it has is the curly string showing. And now the plant is only 9 inches tall[?!]
