OK my Banana Braniac friends, I got one for you! I received a new Ae pup on Monday. It appears that it has several plantlets coming out of the same pseudostem. I thought it looked pretty awful when I took it out of the box. I didn't do anything with it. Day two I put it in a larger pot and still thought it was not looking too promising. Today I went to take pictures of my date palm seedlings and noticed it has several what appear to be plantlets coming out of one p-stem. I tried to take really close shots for you to see. I felt the pstem which feels nice and firm but it is not round. It feels lobed if that makes any sense. I feel at least three and maybe four sections of valleys under the layers of outer p-stem.
Here are pictures of all three days.
Day One

Day Three today 6/17/10 With one new leaf showing:

With possible three other new leaves showing?

Trying to show one of the indented valleys:

I would like comments on this if anyone has any ideas, if this is not really unusual or what?

I am not complaining that's for sure! I did feel each one of the little plant "arms' and each one was firm and did not seem to be hollow. I did manage to accidentally break off one of the little curly que tips on one of them and had noticed that another one had fallen off. I always watch for the little curly ques when watching for new leaves. ~J

What is likely happening (which happens a lot when plants are separated and shipped) is that its started and stopped growing a few times, and kinda form a new pseudostem each which must grow thru and then out of the old one, but using the same meristem. You can tell this has happened if only one of those points is actively growing. If more than one is actively growing then you have an issue with non-normal suckering. As long as something is growing, it should be fine either way.

Well, they all appear to be growing right now because none of them were showing at all yesterday. You can see that rather large looking pink bulge where the three are coming out of wasn't showing there yesterday either.
So it became stressed in shipping and it is stress pupping, sort of? Do I need to do anything special care wise? It is so young to be stressed. It is supposed to be a sword pup - it does have good roots and a good chunk of corm. I checked when I potted it yesterday. ~J

Whatever is happening, there is nothing you can or should do special. Just let it grow and it will be fine. Getting this plant to even start growing can be difficult sometimes, so you're doing great. My 'Aeae' sat for 8 months before showing any growth, 3 days is not bad at all.

Thanks Gabe for the encouragement!
Thanks Dean! Dean has seen first hand how my other Ae's are doing!!! HA! HA! :ha:
Well here are a couple of shots from this morning. One is clearly growing faster than the other three. There appears to be a new curly que (sorry for being so NON technical - :ha:) coming out on one since yesterday. :lurk:

Oh and I have not watered, that is just the water droplets that are coming out of the plant I guess.

I lost one ae ae this spring the trunk was weak and broke off and never sprouted again. My other one has a weak trunk too what if it never gets thicker. I have no idea what to do it is in a pot.

After being out of state for a few days I took new pictures this morning:
The one with the most vigorous growth has a beautiful new leaf:
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=33160&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=33160)
This twins leaf is not opening and looks like it may be turning brown:
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=33161&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=33161)
Of other two points one has completely shriveled up and the other tip has curled and is turning brown. I feel lucky though at least it is growing!!!!! :woohoonaner:

Here's a few more shots from this morning 6/25/10. The twin has come out of the leaf sheath and I touched it and broke the little curly que off. It is hard and i think you can see it is from a separate lobe or section from the base. So, it is growing though much, much slower that the fat one. :)

Well, just as Gabe said, the biggest stalk has taken off and left the others behind. There is one that is still growing, but much, much slower than the biggest one, as you can see.

Thanks for all the encouragement everyone!!! I have really been pleased with the rapid growth of this little baby. The twin growth has stopped completely and is turning brown so it is done. I expect the new leaf to start opening today.
