View Full Version : Can anyone identify this plant for me?

I'm sure it's not a banana plant but it looks an awful lot like one. :ha: It has two pups around the main plant and some kind of flower about to bloom...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI2887.jpg
I just bought it late last night at the 24 hour nursery near my place. When I saw how much it looked like a little banana plant I just had to get it. So curious and appealing.
Could someone please tell me what this actually is?...

is it a short canna?

I think you could be right, Abnshrek! Thank you. When I googled canna plants they look awfully similar. Let's see if others agree...
What a very cool looking plant. I love it. Can't wait to see that flower bloom. I'll show shots later...

Canna for sure. Although I think it's very young and I'm surprised to see it flower with so small leaves. The cannas I see around generally have both, much larger leaves and are quite high.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, you guys! :ha: I knew you would know.
I sure am glad to have it. What a cool looking plant. Didn't realize that Canna leaves look so much like banana ones.
Here's the bud getting ready to burst open. Looks like it will be some kind of bold red color. Here it is today...

Wow are those ever beautiful, Howard! Thanks for sharing.
Mine must be some kind of dwarf type because it's less than a foot tall. When should I remove those 2 pups from around the base? Are Canna's perennial in zone 5?

Hi Miss Hollyberry Lady! I absolutely love cannas, and the leaves on some are as beautiful as the blossoms. Here are more pictures of cannas here:

Once the buds open maybe we can figure out what it is!

Very cool - thanks JB.
It's too exciting waiting for the bud to open and show itself. Here it is today...

Yup, I know I'm obsessed! :ha:
I should likely wait for the bloom to end before trying to remove the 2 pups?

I have found that potted cannas like to be crowded, so you don't have to separate unless you just want to. I would wait until after the flower is spent. It will multiply well potted or planted - they are very easy plants. The plant will get larger if planted, even the dwarfs.
It looks like your flower may be salmon colored - you will love the flower cluster! And they are so photogenic. I take pictures of mine all the time.

I seriously doubt they are hardy in zone 5-6. I have trouble overwintering with lots of mulch in zone 7. Definitely 'bring inside' plants.

Thanks, Migael! I really love it too. Something about that yellow in the center with the pink, just drives me...bananas! Of course I've been snapping shots like crazy and this one shows the 2 pups...

Gonna share them with a pal. Beth tells me if I leave the flower stalk intact even after it's spent, the plant may send up a few more suckers yet! What a cool type this is.
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI2921.jpg
Any ideas on which exact variety it is? Someone was asking me on another site...
Also, do canna's produce seeds?

Wow, thanks for that great list, JB! So many of them look similar. I'll have to look through more thoroughly when I have time.

Thanks, Greg!
Found out some interesting information...
I called the 24-nursery where I got the Canna from and spoke directly to the lady in charge of the plants. She confirmed that it is definitely a dwarf Canna (as if we didn't know :ha:). Apparently they only had five, and I was lucky to get one of them.
She said they got them from a gentleman that grows them here in London and that he didn't know which exact kind they were, except that they were a dwarf grown from seed. Also said that it isn't a perennial to this area and will require indoor protection.
I do think it very much resembles a "tropical salmon" but who knows for sure.

I noticed today that the second pup has sent up a flower stalk...
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI2947.jpg
Over the weekend I picked up another dwarf canna at a different greenhouse. Unlike my other one though it had a label, and it's a "tropical rose". Makes me think all the more that my other one is called "tropical salmon". My new one has been transplanted into my garden and also has 2 pups. I'll show shots when it blooms in a week...

The one I just bought was labelled as a "tropical rose" but the bud is different than the 1st unlabelled one I purchased. I believe it's a 'tropical salmon', but who knows for sure because there seems to be hundreds of varieties. :ha:
Anyway, thanks for all the help and comments you guys. I sure like Canna plants a lot.

Does anyone know if these are seed pods? The flowers wilted and dropped and then these green pods began to grow...

Those are canna seed pods. They will kind of dry up when they are ripe and there will be black, round seeds in them (usually of a pretty large size). I have never gotten any canna seeds to sprout, but some cultivators sprout better than others (many dont even have viable seeds!)
