Hello fellow banana growers,
I am looking for a variety of bananas that is somewhat tolerant to drought conditions that we could grow in the southern Bahamian islands. I have not been able to find any literature that compares varieties based on this factor and wonder if anyone out there has some input on this subject. We get plenty of rain in the summer but the winter/spring can be quite dry and the aquifer is limitted so I would like to find a variety that is as hardy as possible for these conditions.

Thanks,
Tim

'Orinoco' or 'Namwah' are probably your best commonly available more drought resistant types. Although they can withstand it better, any banana will do better with more water, so keep that in mind if they don't keep on growing the same during the dry season, though they may be better off than some other varieties.

This is my problem in some positions too.

If you aren't concerned with growing types with edible fruits, Ensetes are supposed to be very tolerant of hot/dry conditions.
