View Full Version : Too wet or too hot?

I planted a Musella Lasiocarpa roughly a week ago and it looked great the first few days.
I replaced a lot of soil (clay here in Texas) and it seemed to do fine.
However now all leaves except one is looking like they are about to whither so I am afraid I might have watered too much or the temp here that has been straight 98F for the last 5 days might have taken its toll on it.
I separated a pup from it and it is doing fine in a pot indoors. While the other pub I planted in the ground is not doing too well either.

I also stumbled upon a Margarita Banana at Lowes that had lots of pups. put one in the ground, not doing too well, two in glass indoors to grow more roots but the "Mom" is doing good out there in the heat.

How can I tell if I have over watered or if it is something else?

I planted two Musella last year who survived the winter in the same soil as the new one so location seems ok for it.

If I did over water it is there anything I can do except let it dry out?

It sounds like the leaves just got sunburned because they were growing in a much less light-intense situation before. They will look ratty for a few weeks, but the new leaves that come out will be fully acclimated to its new environment. No worries.

Yeah, I was thinking either sunburn or transplant shock (since you separated pups from it also). I'm sure the excessive heat didn't help the situation, but keep with it and I'm sure it'll be fine. I'd let it dry out a bit before watering again, just to be sure you don't overwater it.

I didn't water it today and also put a little piece over it to protect from the worst sun to see if it will recover better that way.

My Gold finger (or Calfornia Gold, don't remember what it was) is looking great, as well as my Gran Nain! It is getting more fun by the day!

Thanks for all info and support

The leaves that are burned will not recover, but the new leaves will be acclimated to whatever amount of sun they are in, so its best to leave it unprotected so that its leaves are tough enough to be out in full sun. If you protect them, once you remove that protection then they will burn again.

Good Point, will remove the cover tomorrow. Hopefully we will see some clouds on Tuesday-thursday and a break in temperature and that should help.

Yeah, I go by the 'tough love' campaign for my plants. If they are in a large pot and I cannot effectively move them in/out to slowly acclimatize them to full sun, then I just put them out in full sun and let them fend for themselves. They sometimes go through a phase of looking crappy, but they soon recover and are prepared to deal with such conditions after that.
