Has anyone ever seen a young musa basjoo start growing completely sideways? I bought these from ebay about a month ago and one of them is growing completely horizontally. Has anyone ever seen this before?

Also, will it eventually straighten off on its own?

Maybe it was making its way towards the (sun)light and therefore has this strange direction?
If you turn it this way, so that the new leafs are pointing away from the sun, it could back to vertical growth.

They are all in full sun already and that is the only one out of 4 that is behaving like this so I'm guessing that it has something to do with the quick bulge in size of the pseudo-stem once it started getting larger. Hopefully it straightens out on its own.

Hmmm...yeah, leaning toward the sun was the only thing I could think of. I'd turn it 180 degrees and let it do its thing. It looks healthy, otherwise, though, so I'd say it'll probably turn out fine.

Are you sure it's not a Musa Peyronie's?

Okay, bad joke...

Can't you try correcting it by training with a rod or something before it grows stronger?

I had problems with my 'Hua Moa' doing this as the leaves were trying to unfurl the past two years. The leaf might be 3-4' long, tightly rolled and laying completely sideways. Many times I would have to assist it in unfurling. I never did figure out what caused this but if the leaf didn't unroll in time, the next leaf would come along and get stuck inside of the first one.

oi had this exact problem with min . i went away for a week in Aug last year and came back and found 1 of my dc's looking the same way . we had had a bad hurrucane like storm and the winds and rain had done it. it might recover mine did but not all the way. yes turn it every few days and should straighten up in a month or so.

After about 1 week, the horizontal banana has put out another leaf and seems to be straightened out pretty well on its own although the newer leaves do appear a little light. Perhaps my potting mix doesn't work too well with bananas, but I'll likely be planting these in another 2 weeks when they get well established in their 2 gallon pots.

I hope they'll generate some pups for me this year, but I'll definitely over-winter them better than anything else because I want them to come back nice and big.
