Anyone else get this in email? I didn't request an email subscription to Bananas.org! I never heard of "FeedBurner" either. I did not click on the link.

But, why would I want to activate a email subscription that I never asked for? I get thread notifications & news/email from Jarred so what else would they send?

Its up to you but its really cool I think the email is just asking you if you want to activate it. I really like it myself you should try it.

I activated mine yesterday. :D From what I understand, it's some sort of newsletter but I just checked my mail and nothing yet. How often will we get them and how long does it take for the first one to arrive?

I went ahead and signed up for it. I believe it is something Jarred set up. Basically, after X number of posts on the org, you will be sent an email with all of the new posts listed. It is similar to going to the "New Posts" link, only it is sent to your inbox.

The email was sent out to all users of the site. It's just promoting a new feature of the site that Jarred has added. I'm not familiar with feedburner, but I assume it's just a new way to keep up-to-date with the things going on here at the site. As with any subscription offer, it's totally optional and up to you. I'm not subscribing, myself, because I feel like I'm here often enough to know what's happening, but for some members, it might be a really useful feature.
Oh, Patty, if you are getting those thread notifications and didn't want them, there is a way to disable them. If you wish to disable the notifications or change them in some way, here are some instructions to assist you in this process (http://www.bananas.org/f5/lilraverbois-helpful-hints-11202.html#post122904).
As for the mass emails, they only get sent out very occasionally when Jarred has some important news he wants to share with all the members and ensure they saw it (and consequently, it also stimulates inactive members to check back into the site to see how things have changed/progressed). They have your email address because you have to submit an email address initially when joining the site. I'm sure you won't be getting many more mass emails from the site...just the usual notifications as per your settings.
Hope that helps explain everything. Ask more questions if you have em!

Thanks for all the explaining gang. It just bothered me that it said I "requested email subscriptions" & I never heard of FeedBurner.

We sent out these feedburner invitations starting with sending the invitation out the most active members.
It's a lot of work because they are done one at a time, there are a couple thousand more still to invite. Not everyone was invited yet, far from it.
It's just an invitation so if you don't want it, you can ignore it, and if you did subscribe, you can unsubscribe at any time.
If you want to subscribe, you can do so from here:
FeedBurner Email Subscription (http://feedburner.google.com/fb/a/mailverify?uri=BananasDotOrg&loc=en_US)
http://feedburner.google.com/fb/a/mailverify?uri=BananasDotOrg&loc=en_US
Personally I enjoy it very much and figured why not invite others to see if they like it also.

And yea, it goes out every day between 5 and 7 pm Eastern with a synopsis of the threads.
When it arrives, I scan it and look over it and I catch a lot of great threads and conversations going on that I may have overlooked if I just relied on the New Posts or Daily Posts links.
