View Full Version : Planting Pineapple Crowns

I'm posting a couple pictures of pineapple crowns prepared for planting, cause a picture is worth a thousand words. First, twist the crown off of the top of the fruit. It should come off pretty clean, then peel the bottom leaves off. You can see how it exposes the little root buds.

This one has a couple bonus slips. Prepare these the same way, even these little ones will grow just fine.

After they are peeled, let them sit for a few days in a cool, dry place. This allows any wounds from peeling to heal, and helps to prevent fungal infections and rot. Then plant in good potting soil. I place them in full sun and water once a week. After about a month or so you should see some new growth.

In my yard, the squirrels will bury peanuts anywhere they can find some dirt, including my newly planted pineapple pots, so I put cages around them for a while. After they get big enough, the squirrels wont mess with em.

Thanks Brian, thats good to know that even the little ones fare well. Some might otherwise be tempted to leave them on and miss out on a new division. Great info.

I think those are really neat.. with the barbs on the leaves. :^) I just stuck my third regular in the dirt, and first two are doing alright. Why do you have the cages around them? Does something eat them down there? :^)

Squirrels, they bury peanuts in the pots and in the process, dig up the new plants!

Well I understand the cages theory now. Have you ever grown Victoria Pineapples? :^)

I do this pretty much every time I have a pineapple plant and it always works really well. I use the same method as you do but sometimes they are a little more stubborn so I have to dip it in root hormone. I would have a pretty large plant by now if I didnt keep neglecting them! Right now I have one in the ground doing so so and another that has been in a cup of water with roots for about a month (a little too long). I should probably pot it now.
Very informitive pics. They are definitely worth a 1000 words!

Victoria is a queen type pineapple. I'm growing a few different queen types, the pictures in this thread are of Natal Queen.

i tried rooting pineapples for awhile with no success other than rotting.

i found its best to get one under ripe eventhough the fruit is not as good, the top will more likely live.
i simly put them in spaghetti sauce jars filled with water in a window and watch the roots eventually touch the bottom before planting them out.

here are some i forgot about, the fruit was overripe and the top looked dead when i put them in. never even changed the murky water or added any hormone and they still root

<img src="http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e388/twoflyasianguy/brom002.jpg">

using this method i have had 100% success

here are some tissue cultures of cheese pine, rudis, antiqua black and an unnamed variety, i just put them in some miracle grow moisture control potting soil

:lurk: Those are some great photos! Thanks for sharing. :) I never tried growing a pineapple before but I know I will now. We have squirrels but I can use chicken wire to keep them out [we have lots of that]. I think I'll buy 4 pineapples and try both methods!

Update: I prepared my pineapple crown and left it to dry for 4 days [I hope 4 didn't hurt]. I put it in water [July 7th] and as soon as roots form I'll be potting it. I'll be getting another pineapple this weekend in case the first one fails. Thanks much for the inspiration.

Bump! :D An update on my pineapple project.
I left the crown out in a cool, dry place for 4 days [I forgot until it had been out 1 day too long]. I put it in water and left it from July 7th to July 16th. This morning I planted it in mostly organic Miracle Gro potting mix. This is how it looks now! The inner leaves are dark green and I think it might survive all right! I have another pineapple I'll be starting today - this time in soil not water. I want to see how well each method works.

i imagine you would get better success dipping the bottom stem in rootone. You inspired me and I need to get some pineapples growing.

Aside from varietal characteristics, the size is of the fruit is greatly affected by available nutrients, size and health of the plant prior to fruiting, and climate.

It has been 36 days since I twisted the top off my first pineapple to grow it. When I potted it, it was sort of loose in the pot [prolly due to lack of roots]. Now it is still firm and green and very tight in the soil so I'm certain it has roots! Here is a photo I took about 10 minutes ago:

This is how my pineapple looks now. I planted it 3 months ago and now it has a pup! :D Should I cut the pup off and put it in another pot?

I would leave the pup on until at least next summer. I dont like adding stress to my plants right before winter since they already are going to be under enough stress once indoors. It will also be larger once next summer comes and have a better chance for survival.
Im glad that I saw this thread again because I completely forgot about the pineapple I have in the ground! Ill post pics of how its doing tomorrow if I remember! Im going to dig it up once the nights start getting into the 40s, but even tonight will be above 50F.

Thanks! :) I brought mine in yesterday cause we're doing 40's. Good luck with yours and I'll be watching for the photos! I'm getting real excited now that I know someone's pinapple top actually made a pineapple in zone 5 after only 2 years! Pineapple is one of my totally fav fruits!

October 8th update:

I bought another Costa Rican golden pineapple last Saturday night and potted it today! I think this one will do great too!

Maybe I should start a pineapple farm! :D
