A bud started emerging from my oldest Sweetheart plant today. The timing is right, but although the trunk is 6+ inches wide at the base the pseudostem height is only about 32 inches.

My understanding was 7' to 9' at maturity.

Tony and Richard, my Sweetheart banana bloomed over the winter, but it didn't produce any bananas because it was so short and not mature enough. Gabe said it was flowering due to stress. He was right that it didn't produce any bananas, but two new pups came up. http://www.bananas.org/f2/my-sweetheart-has-flower-11067.html It was only about four feet tall.

It seems Richards is doing the same.

I give to the neighbors but still end up feeding a lot to the red worms.I think I'm going to start thinning and see if I'll get larger fruit.

Richard,

Regarding sweetheart, the mature ones they have at Quail gardens (I'm sure you've been there) are just like Tony said -- 10-12' and incredibly stout -- the thickest variety they have, and they have many. I'd estimate close to 2' diameter.

EDIT: Ok, just went back to Quail Gardens today -- I'll be realistic, they are more than 1' diameter but not 2'. But they do have the thickest p-stems of any of the varieties they have.
