View Full Version : My negative banana purchasing experience

Hello!

I ordered a Dwarf Puerto Rican Plantain and a Dwarf Orinoco on May 19th from a company called "Green Earth Publishing" on Yahoo Shopping (greenhouse.net). The order status stated "Will Ship in 4-7 days".

Today I checked the status and it still showed the status as "Will Ship in 4-7 days", so I click on "contact us" and send an email asking what the status is since it's been 9 days.

The response was brief, saying only "allow 3 or more days for priority mail.." from Ted@greenhouse.net... but it said nothing about whether it's been shipped or not.

So, I write again and say: "Hello and thanks for responding.

I do not understand your answer. My question is for the status of the order, meaning has it been sent out yet? Or are you saying it will be sent out in 3 or more days? It is very confusing. I'm sorry."

His response surprised me: "it means just what it says... i am busy wait and see"

OUCH!

Now I need a Musa sikkimensis corm and am definitely not going to look at giving them my business (if anyone can point out a good corm dealer, not plant plug, please advise!)

Green Earth is actually a pretty decent place to buy bananas from. The plants I got there were very healthy and identified correctly. I almost guarantee that the issues you are having with shipping stem from USPS and NOT Green Earth. I know I had some issues similar to that when things didn't arrive in the time quoted. They seem to SHIP things on a reasonable time-frame, but USPS always takes its sweet a$$ time getting things to us.

Yeah, the order status on their online store said will ship in 4-7 days even 9 days after I ordered. Normally that updates to "Order Shipped" or something once it does get shipped.

All I did was ask if it has shipped and he was rude. All he needed to say was "yes, it has been shipped. give it a few more days" and that's it. Telling me "I'm busy, wait and see" is rude. Even if it takes him a month to send it, I am patient as long as he tells me "it will ship in another 3 weeks due to..." or along that line.

I'm still looking forward to receiving my plants, especially if the plants are as healthy as you say. However, I will not deal with them again.

If this happened to me, I would contact the Owner / Manager and cancel the order.

There are several members here that sell bananas and they are highly recommended. I am sure they would appreciate your business.

My first banana purchase was with Green Earth. I had the same problem,I was unable to find out if the plants had been shipped or not. I wanted to know if I should be watching out for them or ?. I found my plants had been sitting in the Post Office for 29 days. If I had known that they had been shipped I would have checked with the Post Office sooner. The USPS is supposed to leave you a notice that they tried to deliver and no one was home, well they didn't leave a notice and I doubt they even came to my door.
Green Earth is good for the plants he'll send them but when ? If I were you I'd check the Post Office.

I have ordered from GreenEarth twice with good results both times --a total of 4 banana plants--I guess I'm lucky, but I have seen other post here about rude customer service. That is so not "good business" and so avoidable.

I was going to buy Dwarf Puerto Rican from him. I've heard good things before.

Okay, an update.

I just got home and see that the package arrived. The plants are in excellent condition, and very well packaged. I went on the website and now see they've updated the banana page and also added "We are 5 days behind in shipping due to sale".

So, even though the customer service experience was bad, these are excellent quality healthy looking plants.

Dean, I don't see the Dwarf Puerto Rican on the page anymore. Although I should get rid of mine since my family now has jokes to go along with it (I'm Puerto Rican and only 5'3" tall, so the plant and I are a match made in heaven, so they say now).

Juni, if it needs a home just send it my way.:bananas_b Just kidding...they probably think your crazy about bananas. I noticed that one wasn't available anymore.

I have had nothing but pleasant experiences ordering from Ted @ GreenEarth. I called him once to find out when one order was shipping & he was all over it. :^)

If anyone ever plans on purchasing bamboo, stay away from bambooplantation. They sent me some plants on the verge of death, and likely to be done for in a couple months and they avoid any attempts to contact them.

I too had a bad experience with Ted. The bananas he sent were teeny tiny and very thin. I was told later by members here that they were probably tissue-cultured and greenhoused. So naturally, they collapsed when planted out in full sun. Here is my thread from last year: http://www.bananas.org/f2/new-bananas-keeled-over-9587.html Ted was actually really rude, saying that my soil was the problem.

I've ordered from several members here with excellent results so they are the only people I will buy from now.

Well my nanner bad experiences come from one purchase with aloha tropicals, of course I was a novice and didn't help myself in the situation, and willis orchard couldn't send the right thing if it fell off a pile and landed at their feet 9 out 10 times. :^)

Has anyone heard from the guy at Hardy Tropicals? I've bought excellent large corms and palms from him before, but this year his site still lists the bananas as available May 2010. No one responds at his end.

i ordered from several mail order nurseries with mixed results.

Ted offered appalling customer service to me, his website said in huge letters orders shipped within 24 hours, a week after ordering i emailed him and he very rudely told me there was a delay notice on the site. of course this notice was smaller and below the big Shipped within 24 hours" notice. i didnt even bother responding to him afterwords and my shipment was even later then he told me.

i can understand having a backlogged nursery, he came off extremely smug though. his siam ruby was miniscule.

i ordered from going bananas and there siam ruby was at least 6 months older, in fact it had two pups the size of the one he sent me.

dont get drawn in by his clearance prices, its not worth dealing with. im not a complainer either

Yeah, pretty sure he runs the company himself (or with limited assistance) and is probably overworked, stressed out and kinda hates his job at times because of it. Then again, that's no reason to be rude to customers....but I'm just trying to see his side of the story. I would say, overall....the plants from GreenEarth come very healthy and packed well....but shipping isn't always amazingly fast and customer service is so-so. That's my two copper Lincolns, anyway.

I agree with you on that. As I said, the plants looked great... customer service I'd rate less than so-so though...

That's exactly what he told me. it's a one man operation. As if that's an excuse

Well its not an excuse. The thing I like is my plants show up w/ some dirt which lessens the shock I believe when getting them settled in. USPS is never on time and its the only option. :^)

Yeah, like I said...being understaffed really isn't an excuse to be rude. He should really hire someone to help him out so he's more friendly and can do more business.

Wow...some of those anecdotes just made me :ha::ha::ha: because they were so terrible on his part! I can't believe he talks to his customers like that. Honestly, regardless of how angry you are, as a company spokesperson, you should always be respectful to your customers (even if they are rude to you).

Pretty sure he needs one of these guys :ha:

All of us have had good and bad experiences at a lot of places. I have ordered from Tom several times and he has even replaced plants for me and has been very easy to work with. Monday I received 10 Black Thai and 8 Siam Ruby's from Tom. Shipping was $6.50 for the entire four large USPS mailing tube boxes tapped together though the box said $44.00. My experience has always been good but "there is NO excuse for crappy customer service". I own my own business and expect great service for myself and my clients. We can discuss our experiences and then it is up to each of us to decide.

That's no excuse for being a douche. Martin is a one man operation and has six kids and a wife and was able to meet all of my shipping needs when I bought my first Ae Ae from him last month.

LOL....I do agree. Keep in mind that Ted moves a LOT more merchandise than Martin does. Again, that is really no excuse, but it's a factor tossed into the mix. IMO, he needs to hire some assistance to handle the shipping, orders, customer service or some aspect of his business. It's stupid to run yourself ragged and lose customers cause you're so stressed you can't keep your cool/composure with clientele.
