Here is my Calicarpa shrub from last summer...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI1291.jpg

You can see why it's called "Amythest Beautyberry"...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI1293.jpg

Here's how it looked in the winter. The berries stay intact until Spring when they drop...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI1851.jpg

Here's the before and after pruning shots a couple days ago. This is the before shot...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI2763.jpg

This is the after shot...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI2764.jpg

Notice the many new leaves beginning to grow?! Let the show begin...

In a few weeks I'll be taking some cuttings and rooting them into shrubs of their own, to give as gifts to friends. I'll post my method and procedure here, as well as show some more shots too.

It's best to take cuttings from the new fresh, soft growth, although older woody cuttings will root as well. Misting and covering the shoots while waiting for roots are key to success, as I will demonstrate soon...

Here is the shrub I showed earlier. Just look at it this morning, less than a week later!...

Last Monday, it looked like this...

Here is my 2nd shrub, that also got pruned last Monday and fertilized...

It will soon be time to take some cuttings and begin propagation...

Thanks Amber.

The things are just growing like a weeds. Think I'm going to take some cuttings today and begin propagation. Just in the last week it's grown unbelievably.

I'll snip some shoots a couple of hours after watering and fertilizing today, so they'll be swollen with moisture. Bet they root quicky because the shrubs are currently in the stage of vigorous vegetative growth.

I'll post shots of the cuttings and my methods soon...

Last night I mailed some cuttings to some pals so they could try to root their own shrubs. This thread will help them to know what to do...

How to root "Amythest Beautyberry" shrub cuttings:

Here's a shot of some fresh and very healthy cuttings I took yesterday from my shrubs. The cuttings are kept in a glass of water until they are planted...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI2831.jpg

Now you remove the lower leaves at the bottom of the cutting and dunk it in softwood rooting hormone so it's looks something like this...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI2832.jpg

Then you pot it up into some good well draining soil-less mix. I use a pencil to poke a hole and then stick the cutting in the hole and pack the soil around it. Make sure the soil is previously moistened so the rooting hormone powder isn't washed off the stem...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI2834.jpg

Now I gently mist the cutting with plain water and put a glass or plastic cover over the top...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI2835.jpg

Now you wait...

Each day I take the cover off and mist the cuttings again, watching for new growth, which usually takes place in 2-4 weeks. I'll keep you all posted.

Here's some more cuttings I planted in one big pot. They'll be covered with a large clear plastic bag until rooting takes place...

I was going to do some gardening but it's just raining too damn hard out there now.

: (

So great you got the cuttings Pen! I think they actually might root ok in a glass of water too, and I'm one for experimenting. I told Bob and I'll tell you also - not to worry if the cuttings don't make it. I've rooted them with success before so I know mine will take and I can send you an already rooted one later, if yours don't. Have fun experimenting.

Feel free to cut that one cutting down that looks kind of like a branch. Maybe it will root as is though - don't know. Do what you think is best. Maybe stick a cutting or two into soil however in case the ones in water don't make it. Some cuttings won't root in water, but who knows with these. They might. Let us know...

I decided to take the bag cover off my cuttings in the big pot and see what would happen, knowing I have more cuttings right outside the front door if they wilted and died. Here they are with no cover all day today...

The Hollyberry Lady

So glad to hear they're doing well for you, Pen! :03:

You'll need 2 shrubs for pollination if you want berries, so be sure to establish a pair of them fairly near each other, but they don't have to be super close if you don't want them to be either.

They can be pruned and shaped and kept very neat and tidy looking, or you can let them grow like crazy like I do, so there's berries everywhere!

Today, I will transplant the water rooted cuttings into soil, but you must watch carefully for wilt. If they wilt, cover them right away.

I have a spray called "wilt-proof" and if you spray cuttings with it, they almost never wilt. I don't always use it though because I enjoy a challenge but I think I will today. This will ensure their success.

I wish you continued luck & success with yours too, Penny. You really will love these perennial shrubs.

The stuff you have called Wilt Proof, where did you find that Sherr?

The Hollyberry Lady
06-22-2010, 02:23 PM
Yeah Penny, it's actually called "Wilt Pruf" and I got it at Van Luuks greenhouse on Hamilton Rd at Gore Rd, in London. Maybe you can pick some up next time you're here. This is what it looks like...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI2961.jpg

It's a waxy type spray that keeps the plant or cuttings from losing moisture, thereby preventing any wilting. Really great stuff but be prepared to spend 20 bucks for it. You don't use it a lot though so it's not like you have to buy it all the time. It's an excellent product and does what it claims.

Works well on Rhododendrons, Evergreens, Boxwoods, Azaleas, Hollies, Laurel and other ornamentals. Excellent for drought and windburn protection. For cuttings and christmas trees too.

Hope this helps.

One gardener in the States told me Beautyberry shrubs are 60 bucks to buy at his local nursery! I ordered my original shrubs from P.E.I. and paid 40 bucks for the pair.

I'll show shots of my bushes soon. They're both just huge now. Biggest they've ever been. I water and fertilize them each week (Sunday) without fail. I'll show shortly...

They're absolutely huge and getting bigger. The show of berries this season should be spectacular!

I'll show shots soon of more of my growing cuttings. Some of them are thriving and the roots are sending up new shoots everywhere. Way too cool, how fun and easy Beautyberry cuttings are to root.

Definitely a success story on this one. I keep pruning it back to make it dense and full. I will prune the tops off of these new shoots today. I was making this particular shrub along with another for a close friend who is going to be very happy indeed.

I can't make any promises but I do have tons of rooted cuttings currently and after I send them to all the people I promised shortly, if I have a couple extras I'll send them your way for sure.

Remember you need two shrubs for pollination and berry production. I'll see what I can do and let you know. I really want you to have this gorgeous bush.

My shrubs outdoors are already producing fruit so this is not the proper time to take cuttings but I will as a last resort if I have to because they'd likely root anyway but they just might take a little longer. One way or the other, you'll have this variety, Penny.

Here's two beautiful rooted cuttings this morning, just before I send them to New Jersey!

Something interesting, I discovered...

Here are some of my last cuttings to go into soil and I hand-pollinated some of the blossoms by just tapping the pollen onto many different flowers and mixing things around...

Looks liks I had success because berries are growing on the cuttings that haven't even come out of water yet! Don't be surprised, you guys expecting shrubs from me, if you get some with berries already on them...

That is truly amazing, Sherry,

I would never think of hand-pollinating any cuttings, still growing in the water jars indoors if I'm correct.

How creative and how encouraging......

Thanks, Soundofthemusic1!!! :03:

I've had success with hand-pollination before and thought what the heck. I knew the flowers wouldn't get pollinated by insects so I was their only chance. Although some of the flowers dried up and fell off with no berries, it worked on a few and I've got several cuttings with clusters of berries...

The roots on these very last cuttings to go into soil (promise :ha:) are incredible! Check them out in water...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSCI3279.jpg

On this close~up, you can see these tiny green shoots down near the roots that were actually growing in the water! They are the many new shoots and branches that the roots send up underground...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSCI3277.jpg

Howard, I haven't decided which exact pair I'll be sending you yet, but you can bet your @!%, they'll be beauties. :ha:

It takes time to root cuttings and establish them as little shrubs and I want them to be perfect and strong before I send them. I intend on spraying them with wilt-pruf to lock the moisture inside during travelling.

Establishing the roots in your garden this season will be the most important thing and there's still plenty of time left for that before freeze, so don't worry. I'm busy pruning the shoots each day and turning them all into bushy little things. You can continue the pruning when you receive them and they will be full and gorgeous. Pruning truly makes the difference between a spindly shrub or a dense one. The same applies to vines.

In total, it looks like I will have 6 pairs of Beautyberry shrubs (12 plants total), so after I mail to Bob, Howard, and ShearMe, you may get yours after all, Pen!

Sherry,

The roots on your Amythest Beautyberry cuttings look amazingly beautiful. I've been reading this blog to learn how to propagate Amythest Beautyberry by cuttings in the future because it is a very pretty shrub when properly pruned.

Is there anything else you put in the water, such as liquid rooting hormones or any type of fertilizer? I don't really know what plants need at different stages of their plant lives. Don't plants need some sort of fertilizer to help them grow roots?

And how often do you change the water in the container? Some plants are fussier than others. I never know the rule of thumb of how often I need to change the water when rooting cuttings in water. Can you educate me on this?

Thanks!!!

Rae from Georgia
:nanadrink:

The Hollyberry Lady

Thank you again, Soundofthemusic1!

No, cuttings do not need any fertilizer to be able to root, because if there are no roots than the cutting can't uptake any nutrients. It's only after roots begin to develop that a mild fertilizer or starter formula may be added.

However...

"Amythest Beautyberry" cuttings are exceptionally easy to root and the ones you see in my latest pics were in that jar of water for many weeks in an east window with strappled sunlight on them. I changed the water every couple of days and always made sure it was topped up. I think I used a softwood rooting hormone powder on the ones rooting in soil but I do not believe it was really necessary.

I was also worried that the leaves would be yellowish or not very green, due to weeks in water with no nutrients, but as you can see they are as green and healthy as can be. This is one of the absolute easiest shrubs I've ever tried to propagate. Low maintenance and not at all fussy or needy. It's so easy going and a complete joy to work with. To me, they look like they could go on indefinitely, growing in plain water!

: o

Of course all of them have been sprayed with wilt-pruf and planted in soil, as of late this afternoon. The wilt-pruf will help prevent moisture loss while they are making the transition from water, to soil. Some fussy cuttings can die during this transition period, even if they have a full set of roots. Figs are a good example and should be covered or sprayed when they come out of water and go in soil.

Depends on the cutting type, as to how often to change the water. Some cuttings will die if you change the water even one time. Beautyberry is not one of them though and it can handle daily or weekly changes - whichever you prefer.

Hey Sherry- Do the deer bother your beautyberry at all? I was thinking of putting them in my front yard as they're so pretty, but the deer practically live there. I might have to go into the back behind the fence, but that means finding a sunny spot, and those all seem to have bananas in them for some strange reason. BTW, I'll be pulling your toad lilies soon, so don't fret.

Also, Penny, try putting human hair clumps around plants to save them from the rabbits. Didn't work for me for deer, but was successful for rabbits. I get mine from Mom's beauty parlor. One word of caution- they do attract flies, but I'd rather have the flies and my plants than neither.

No worries about the toad lilies, Howard. The truth is I'm overwhelmed with what I have now. Just when you get around to it, is cool with me, even if it's not until October.

Hi, Howard,

When I googled last time, I found Amythest Beautyberry belong to category B plants, SELDOM severely damaged plants. Here is the link to the web site:

Lawn & Garden: Landscape Plants Rated by Deer Resistance (http://njaes.rutgers.edu/deerresistance/)

Just about every one of my category B plants has suffered FREQUENTLY SEVERE damages; some are dying and some never come back from last year's attacks. I personally adore the purple berries of the beautyberry shrubs because purple is one of my favorite colors; those shrubs are gorgeous if kept pruned.

I wouldn't suggest growing them in your front yard if you worry about deer problem as much as I do. In fact, I may try, in the future, growing them indoors - a wishful thinking. ;)

Best of luck on growing Amythest Beautyberry to all of you!!!

I thought it would be cool to see if the leaves will drop indoors like they do outdoors in late Autumn. The leaves also turn purple-ish colored in early Fall, outside.

Your bush is ripening beautifully and I think it may be ready by Sunday, I'm hoping. ;)

Now, back to Beautyberry...

I'm thinking that if these cuttings with fruits do root, I'll save them until Spring and then plant them out or give them away. I've got more little Callicarpa shrubs then I know what to do with at this point!

I noticed too that some of my berries outside are beginning to ripen and turn purple!!! :goteam:

When you guys get them, plant them out in the garden and fertilize them right into late Fall. If they don't come back next Spring I'll set you up with more next season.

The truth is, it takes awhile to establish shrubs from cuttings and it can't be rushed. For those who have the room and the light, feel free to keep the shrubs indoors over winter and prune them over and over...they'll be bushy things by next Spring and you can plant them out then.

Whatever way you guys choose, I will replace anything that doesn't survive, so don't worry. I'll let you know the very day I mail them but I forgot about Labour Day Monday being a holiday which slows mail considerably. Best to wait until after the holiday before releasing plants into the mail.

Very soon though. I fertilized all the cuttings today and they are all thriving!

Sherry- what fertilizer and regimen are you using, so we can replicate it?

The Hollyberry Lady
09-01-2010, 04:45 PM
Howard...

I use an organic water-soluble formula called DNF (Dutch Nutrient Formula) for cuttings and seedlings. Bob tells me he can't get it in Jersey though, so I'm not sure if you can either.

I also use a bit of blood and bonemeal in the soil. I would feed with something high in nitrogen, to promote a lot of vigorous vegetative growth to get them going.

A crappy shot I took five minutes ago of some of the shrubs in my bedroom window. They are all doing great though...

I'm sending off the cutting shrubs this week for sure...just had a lot going on last week.

I'm thinking that if it's possible for you guys, keep them indoors for the Winter and put them out at the first of next Spring. I think on second thought when shrubs are raised from cuttings, they should spend the first Winter inside. However, if you guys want to chance it and they don't survive, remember I promise to replace them next season, so no worries. ;)

They can successfully be kept in a partially sunny windowsill and be pruned all Winter long....they will be so full and bushy by Spring! I'm doing the same with a couple of mine.

Yeah yeah Bob, you're one to talk aren't ya? Mister "I'm mailing them this week"....uh huh sure! I'll believe it when I see it!

I'm kinda glad that I'm sending my stuff late in the season because I'd prefer people to nurse the cutting shrubs inside for first Winter and think you guys might have better success this way. I've sent Howard enough to experiment with and will with you other guys too.

This plant is so easy to please that I have sneaking suspicions the roots will survive regardless, so feel free to experiment if you want.

Sorry I didn't post for a day or so. We had a rain storm Friday that caused a tree branch to fall on the power wires across the street. Took out power for about 4 hours to the whole neighborhood. Then I found out my phone and internet (both Verizon FIOS) were down too. Discovered it wasn't my box, so they had to send someone today. Had to redo the setup on the pole across the street; everything had been fried. No surprise, as the accident happened around Friday midnight and was a large boom, followed by the brightest light I've ever seen. I opened my front door expecting to see a house or two engulfed in flames (like the natural gas explosion recently in California). The power lines were all flaming up on the pole where the wire had been pulled away from it. Guess we're all pretty lucky.

Bottom line- nothing yet- still. grrr.

Wow Howard! Gosh, I'm glad you're ok! Pretty wild that happened.

I could really boot my own arse for sending your box the way I did!

Remember I told you I didn't have your last name? It just says "Mr Howard" on it, and I think this is definitely the reason for the overly long delay. I shouldn't have done that and I knew better but figured since the box was well wrapped and everything else was clear, I'd get away with it...but it's made them suspicious and I know it.

Howard, if things are dead or in bad shape when you get them, don't worry. I can replace things for you immediately and the seeds will still be ok. Let's just see how this plays out...

Bob & Zac, I think I will mail your stuff priority post so this doesn't happen to yours and I have your last names so it should be ok.

Now.....i put the beautyberry cuttings in a pot:08:, and thought to keep them inside, or do you think i should plant them outside , i figured i would "baby" them through the winter, especially after losing the last ones that you sent.....whatcha think ;):)

:goteam: FABULOUS NEWS, PEN!!! :goteam:

I'm so glad you got them alright! Happy you like the Plumeria too...it's from Bob. Remember that gorgeous huge cutting he sent me last year and I told you I'd share it with you someday?
Well that's it!

It put on a bit of growth this season and that small piece I gave you is one of the new branches that grew! :D

The Plumeria cutting should be calloused over now, which is recommended before rooting, so just stick the end into some moist but well draining soil and put it in a window and wait...

It will root in no time flat for you and you will have a lovely little Plumeria tree. ;)

I shared a little piece with Zac also.

Ok, so about the Beautyberry cuttings...

Take the two crappiest cuttings Penny, and place them directly in the ground but try to bury them a little deeper so the roots have a chance to survive. It's the roots that send up the new shoots so don't worry if the tops die down.

Keep the nicest cuttings inside in a bright window and fertilize the roots all winter since they should still be active indoors. My cuttings are used to being fed regularily with a mild solution so if you all continue to do this you will see excellent results.

Be sure to keep pruning the new shoots and do not be afraid or reluctant to do so....the shrubs love it and they will get really bushy and full for you as a result.

Feel free to experiment because I can of course replace any of them later, so no worries.

Enjoy your shrubs, everyone. :08:

Zac, yours could be there today! It's Express Post and they guarantee it in three business days but the first day begins the day after you drop the box to the post office, so we'll see...

Penny's made it in good time, so I'm happy. :)

As I told you in pm, due to the fact that you have not received my box yet, Bob has offered to mail you a couple of the extras I sent for him within a couple weeks time. He's just waiting for them to get over their shock of the last trip first before he sends them out a 2nd time.

SHERRY- GUESS WHAT ARRIVED IN TODAY'S POST!!!! A wonderful package adorned with many whimsical stickers. :woohoonaner: Seriously, there is no postmark, the stamps are hand canceled so I can't tell the mailing date, but it arrived! Now for the great part. Some of the contents are still alive! The kumquat is nice and green, and looks like you packed it yesterday. While most of the Polka Dot Plant is brown and dry, there is one green stem with 2 yellowing leaves that I think I can nurture to health. There are a few small green stems of ?succulents, so any idea on potting them? Unfortunately, the Callicarpa is toast,as is the Lycium barbarum. And what a wonderful selection of seeds, including lotus (do you know the color or name? I want to put one in the pond when it's grown!), Callicarpa, Sherry's beautiful Masquerade ornamental hot pepper, Blue Ensign dwarf morning glory, and the white marigold that she was praising. From the package I see why!

OK, now I can say it! "WOW, Sherry, you shouldn't have. I can't believe you sent me all this great stuff. As soon as I get a camera I'll post shots of all these wonderful plants. You're such a sweetheart, even if you wouldn't post a pic of your ying yang." :ha::ha::ha:

Oh my gawd, Howard....I cannot believe you got the box after all this time...but what's more astonishing is that there was even one thing living in it!:eek::eek:

The Kumquat looks perfect!!! WOW!!! I am so glad you finally got it! :D The seeds will all be perfect for you too...just wait til you try those white marigolds! I'm told the Lotus will be pink!

Wonder what the heck took it so long to get to ya. Don't worry about the Goji berry shrub....I'll send ya another in Spring.

Are the Beautyberry roots toast too, Howard? If the roots still look like they're ok this is what matters, as they send up new shoots later. Let me know...

I really am very relieved that you finally got it and was very upset about it. Glad it worked out and thanks so much for your post...although we could have done without that last shot showing a dead twig! :ha: Now no one will ever want anything from me again! :ha::ha::ha:

Ok well that's very cool and kinda cheers me up so I hope you enjoy the seeds and plants. The succulent cutting will root in soil in a half sunny sill. Are they all ok? Just stick the ends into the soil. I even gave you that pink flowering one that Zac sent me!

Thanks again, Howard. Enjoy! :bananas_b

Ok, for clarification's sake....

I though I had a yin, and you had a yang?! If I had a yin yang....wouldn't that make me a...

You post a shot of yours first Howard, and I'll post mine right after you're banned! http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/emo1.gif

Sherry, look what I found today! They are in the landscaping at the Lowe's I went to today. Lowe's does not sell it! HA! HA! :ha: Anyway, I had to take some shots for you. Are the brown berries the "ripe" ones? There were some that were already on the ground so I picked some up. They probably ripen here way sooner since it is so hot here, but I thought you would like to see some in Texas! I need to go back over this thread and see what I can do with the seeds and stuff! WooHoo! :woohoonaner:

Amazing shots, Janan. Thanks for posting! :waving:

WoW, so that's a nursery bush...how much were they selling them for? That one you're showing...was that in a container or in the ground?

The berries are ripe and the seeds within are ready, when they turn bright purple as shown in your shots. Sow some seeds moist & fresh and dry some on a plate for a week and then sow some dry as well. I have a feeling both will germinate.

Good for you that you found one and showed it to us, Janan. Thank you. It's a real beauty! :08:

These are in the parking lot landscaping and they are in FULL Texas sun! They are all planted in the ground. This summer hasn't been as hot as it usually is here, but they look like this in October and surrounded by parking lot!!!!! I would say they are some tough plants. Sorry, I didn't get any of the whole bushes - I will try to get some the next time I go. There are probably 20 or so of them in this parking lot.

There is another taller shrub with red berries on it I will try to get some shots of that one for you too. It is not a Holly, it has a small leaf - it almost looks like a small tree. Anyway, I am glad you liked the shots. I took them just for you! :) ~J

I know Penny! I hope I can get it to grow for me. I have really good luck with seeds - getting them started, but I have a devil of a time keeping them alive after about a month or two. So keep your fingers crossed for me. I will follow Sherry's instructions right down to the letter so we will see. I am encouraged that it is such a tough plant. I think I might try and get a couple of cuttings off it and try that too. I was surprised too that the leaves are so large - that and the color contrast. It is a beautiful plant! ~J

Janan...

Do you know how much that nursery was selling their shrubs for? I know one gardening friend in the US who says his nursery sells them for 60 bucks a shrub...and you need two!

I only paid 50-60 bucks for my pair, through mail-order, but interested to know how much they are selling for in other areas as well...

I hope you have success with your seeds, Janan. I bet you will. Good luck and let us know...

That's the funny thing - they didn't have any for sale, nor did they know where I could buy any. I guess whoever designed the landscaping for the place bought them when they were developing the site. Maybe I just didn't talk to the right person. I will ask again when I go back. I am usually there about once a week when I hit the sale tables! :) ~J

Thanks for your efforts, Sherry. I look forward to them. I just did a google search and found out some amazing thing. They are edible, make a tasty jam as Caloosamusa mentioned, great for birds in the wintertime, can use the leaves as mosquito repellent, you can even make wine from the berries. This makes this plant even more desirable to me and it was high on my list thanks to Sherry's positive press as it is! Very cool! There are a couple of negative comments but WOW who knew! :goteam:

:ha: I have to have quite a few bushes full of berries before I can make jam though Sherry! :waving:

We did have our first frost last night so I will be cutting rose hips today! You never have as much as you thought you would have by the time your fruit cooks down.

My sister and I gathered what we thought was a TON of wild muscadine grapes a couple of years ago to make some jelly. And the amount of sugar you have to have - WOW! But it was the best grape jelly I have ever eaten, and the most beautiful brilliant purple color I have ever seen. The kitchen smelled heavenly. I think we each got maybe 8 of the small jars of jelly out of it.

Anyway, knowing how many grapes we had then I can imagine how many beautyberries it would take!

Yes, I think if I have lots of extra gardening space someday, I might like to grow a half dozen shrubs, so I can make some Beautyberry jam.

In the meantime though, I've been gobbling a few berries here and there...a couple more today. Even got my mom to try a few. She joked and said she better not be on the toilet all night!!! :ha:
